TIMBER: A NEW METHODOLOGY IN DESIGN + CONSTRUCTION
Mass timber is an engineered wood product made from layers of wood bonded together to create strong, lightweight, and sustainable building materials. Unlike traditional timber, mass timber offers the strength to support large-scale buildings, allowing architects and engineers to design taller and more complex structures using wood. Its use is revolutionizing the construction industry by offering a low-carbon alternative to steel and concrete, enhancing sustainability, reducing construction times, and fostering innovative design possibilities in both urban and rural environments.
Mass timber is an advanced building material made from layers of wood engineered for strength, sustainability, and versatility. Two common forms are cross-Laminated timber (CLT), which consists of layers of lumber stacked crosswise and bonded together for exceptional strength and stability, and glued-laminated timber (glulam), created by gluing together multiple layers of timber in the same direction to form strong, durable beams and columns. These products offer a sustainable alternative to traditional construction materials like steel and concrete.
BUILD FASTER
One of the leading benefits of opting for mass timber is the enhanced speed of construction, especially for mid-rise and high-rise applications.
CREATE HEALTHIER SPACES
Research has shown that occupying a mass timber building can lead to measurable improvements in well-being, productivity, and stress.
CLEANER JOBSITES
As pre-fabricated material, much of the “construction” process takes place offsite in controlled environments. This allows material to be shipped and installed upon arrival. The result is a more efficient process with less waste.
LESS CARBON EMISSIONS
Since mass timber is comprised of a renewable materials, the impact on the environment is substantially reduced — especially if the forest of origin is sustainabily managed. Many studies have shown that mass timber can reduce a project’s carbon impact by up to 30 percent when compared to concrete and steel.
