i alguien me hubiera dicho de pequeña que un día podríamos pedir un servicio compartido para volar en helicóptero, y que lo podríamos hacer desde nuestro teléfono celular, probablemente le hubiera creído; no en balde caricaturas futuristas como los Supersónicos, que yo amaba, nos presentaban escenas con todos esos inventos sofisticados que hacían la vida de los personajes mucho más fácil. Sin embargo si alguien me hubiera dicho que en mi país en pleno siglo XXI la violencia contra las mujeres sería un tema diario y que México sería uno de los países con más feminicidios en el mundo, quizá me hubiera costado más trabajo creerlo. A mi me dijeron que las mujeres iban a tener las mismas oportunidades que los hombres, que el mundo estaba listo para reconocer su capacidad y que el futuro lucía mejor que nunca. A veces felices coincidencias nos regalan historias como la de la fotógrafa Paola Ismene, que empezó a explorar el autoretrato como catarsis para enfrentar momentos muy difíciles de su vida. Su esfuerzo y perseverancia la han llevado a sobresalir en el mundo de la fotografía digital y móvil y a ganar algunos concursos, entre ellos el de Saatchi, lo que la hizo merecedora a exponer su obra en una de las galerías más reconocidas de Londres. Si bien hay mucho por hacer en el campo de la igualdad de género, historias como esta me devuelven la fe y sé que aunque las cosas no avanzan a la velocidad que quisiéramos, cada día hay más mujeres exitosas que con su ejemplo nos inspiran a seguir luchando por las que aún no tienen oportunidades. Felices reflexiones, disfruten la edición. «

f someone had told me as a child that one day we could request a shared service to fly by helicopter, and that we could do it from our cell phone, I probably would have believed it; not in vain futuristic caricatures like the Supersonic, ones that I loved, they presented scenes to us with all those sophisticated inventions that made the life of the characters much easier. However, if someone had told me that in my country in the XXI century, violence against women would be an everyday topic in the news and that Mexico would be one of the countries with more feminicides in the world, that might have been harder to believe. I was told that women were going to have the same opportunities as men, that the world was ready to recognize its capacity and that the future looked better than ever. Sometimes happy coincidences give us stories like the one of Paola Ismene, a photpgrapher who began to explore self-portrait as a catharsis to face very difficult moments in her life. Her effort and perseverance have led her to excel in the world of digital and mobile photography and to win some contests, including Saatchi mobile photography contest, which made her worthy of exhibiting her work in one of the most recognized galleries in London. While there is much to be done in the field of gender equality, stories like this give me back my faith. I know things are not moving at the speed we would like, however every day there are more successful women whose example drives us to keep fighting. Best reflections and happy readings «

EL POLÉMICO MOSQUITO QUE ACABARÁ CON LA MALARIA THE CONTROVERSIAL MOSQUITO THAT WILL ERADICATE MALARIA En un laboratorio de Italia, un equipo de científicos modifica genéticamente mosquitos para propagar con rapidez una mutación letal que acabaría con la malaria al terminar con todos los ejemplares de su propia especie. El proyecto sería puesto a prueba en aldeas africanas invadidas por esta enfermedad. “Será un experimento realmente innovador”, ha asegurado la entomóloga Ruth Muller, que dirige el laboratorio y estima que se trata de “un momento histórico”. Pero no todos opinan lo mismo. Dana Perls, integrante de la organización Amigos de la Tierra piensa que los efectos son “devastadores”. “Es una tecnología que no sabemos cómo va a terminar. Necesitamos detenerla ahora, en su etapa actual”, afirmó Nnimmo Bassey, director de la Fundación Salud de la Madre Tierra de Nigeria. “Están tratando de usar África como un gran laboratorio para probar tecnologías peligrosas”, afirmó. A group of scientists in Italy have launched a controversial genetic experiment by releasing a new kind of genetically modified organism. It’s a mosquito designed to spread a genetic mutation in an incredibly fast manner that would eradicate malaria by terminating with all specimens of their own species. The project would be tested releasing mosquitoes in African villages experiencing malaria outbreaks. “It’s a highly innovative experiment”, assures Ruth Muller, an entomologist who runs the Italian lab and adds that, “It’s a historic moment.” But not everyone recognizes the same thing. Dana Pearls, member of Friends of the Earth, believes that it could have “devastating impacts.” “We don’t know how this extermination technology will end. We need to slow down and hit the pause button now, in its current stage”, afirms Nnimmo Bassey, director of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation, based in Nigeria. “They are trying to use Africa as a great big laboratory to test dangerous technologies”, he declared. «
LA AGENCIA CHINA XINHUA YA TIENE SU PRESENTADORA HECHA CON INTELIGENCIA ARTIFICIAL XIHUA NEWS AGENCY ALREADY HAS THEIR PRESENTER MADE WITH AI Xin Xiaomeng es la primera presentadora femenina de este tipo en el mundo. Xinhua ya tiene un par de conductores masculinos creados con inteligencia artificial –IA- desde noviembre: Qui Hao, que da las noticias en chino, y Zhan Zhao, programado para hablar en inglés. La ventaja de los presentadores virtuales es su disponibilidad de 24 horas al día para ofrecer noticias en el sitio web y las redes sociales de la agencia. Todavia su expresividad facial es limitada pero sus habilidades van en aumento. Ya pueden dar las noticias de pie y ya tienen lenguaje corporal. Su primera retransmisión será el próximo marzo durante las sesiones anuales de la Asamblea Popular Nacional china. Xia Xiameng is the first female presenter of this type in the world. El 75% de los seres vivos y todos los dinosaurios desaparecieron. El iridio, un material que no se da en la tierra, descubierto en los 80, determinó la teoría del meteorito. El descubrimiento en la península del Yucatán del cráter donde impactó, la afianzó. Ahora nuevos estudios apuntan que la extinción no fue de golpe sino el resultado de erupciones en las escaleras del Decán en la India, a lo largo de cientos de miles de años, combinado con el efecto del asteroide. Dos equipos científicos publican en la revista Science mediciones de alta precisión de la zona para tratar de reconstruir el curso de los acontecimientos. “Parece claro que el plancton marino fue el más rápido en desaparecer, probablemente en menos de 10,000 años. Para otros animales, especialmente los terrestres, como los dinosaurios, pudo tomar más tiempo, pero es algo muy controvertido”, afirma Paul Renne, investigador de Berkeley y coautor de uno de los estudios.
La asociación estadounidense Airlines for America ha aprobado un nuevo estándar internacional para los pasajeros no binarios. A4A engloba a nueve compañías basadas en EEUU y a un miembro asociado canadiense, Air Canada, mientras que IATA asocia unos 290 miembros en 120 países de todo el mundo. American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines y Alaska Airlines ya han declarado que van a apoyar el nuevo estándar, informa USA Today. Air Canada espera hacer lo mismo tras las instrucciones que de el Gobierno en ese sentido. “Es un importante paso adelante para las personas no binarias, de modo que no tengan que enfrentarse a un desajuste entre su información en los billetes y su identificación legal”, comentó la decisión Beck Bailey, de Human Rights Association, al diario The New York Times. The US Association, Airlines for America, has approved a new international standard for non- binary passengers. Of the five major extinctions that ended life on Earth, the most popular one was that of the Cretacious Era. All the dinosaurs disappeared as well as 75% of all living beings. Iridium, a metal that is very rare on Earth’s surface, discovered in the 80s determined the theory of the meteorite. Ser el fotógrafo de cámara de celular más relevante en este momento a nivel internacional es quizás el más difícil hito artístico que existe en 2019. En un terreno donde se confunde el arte con el amateurismo, trascender a lo canónico, al espacio convencional e x p o s i t i v o, r e q u i e r e d e u n discurso artístico tan impactante como único. Paola Ismene, nacida en la Ciudad de México, lo logró, ganó la categoría Autorretrato en los Mobile Photography Awards 2017 y el concurso Selfexpression de la Galería Saatchi, en Londres, donde se expone individualmente su obra. Time Contact la entrevistó, la retrató y le propuso llevar su mirada de colores irreales hacía el bodegón, el género que mejor retrata el significado social y vital de las cosas. Para ello utilizó prendas, bolsos y complementos de Pineda Covalin. Este fue el resultado. «
To be the most important mobile photographer at international level in this moment is perhaps the most difficult artistic milestone in 2019. In a field where art is confused with amateurism transcending to the canonical, to a conventional exhibition space, requires a very powerful as well as a unique artistic discourse. Born in Mexico City, Paola Ismene achieved it by winning the Self-Portrait category in 2017 Mobile Photography Awards and the Self Expression photography competition at the Saatchi Gallery in London where the prize is a solo exhibition of her work. She was interviewed and photographed by Time Contact and asked to carry her unreal multicolored perspective to still life, the genre that best pictures the social and vital meaning of things. For that purpose she used garments, handbags and Pineda Covalin accessories. This was the result. « • 09 •

Time Contact - ¿Dices sentir pánico ante el bienestar, qué significa esta sensación en tu obra? Paola Ismene - Cuando acababa 2015 mi mamá tuvo un accidente muy grave, la atropellaron y estuvo en coma meses, yo estudiaba foto, tuve que dejarlo todo para estar con ella y cuidarla. Fueron dos años. Dejé la carrera y mi trabajo de foto, todas mis frustraciones comenzaron a surgir, empecé a sufrir ataques de pánico y a tener problemas de ansiedad y un poco es por eso que empiezo a hacer más foto de autorretrato. Mi mamá tuvo otro accidente cuando yo tenía cinco años, cuando estoy calmada mi cuerpo reacciona, en lugar de lo contrario, un ataque de pánico te da cuando estás al borde de la ansiedad por lo general pero mi cuerpo es al revés, asocia que lo tranquilo no es normal, porque lo tranquilo significa que algo fuerte viene después. Me despertaba de sueños y me sentía intranquila, como que esa intranquilidad estaba todo el tiempo ahí y cuando dormía estaba en estado de alerta constante y era súper desgastante, para mí hacer fotos y lo visual es mi forma de drenar un poco lo que estoy viviendo. Cuando empecé a hacer proyectos más personales lo empecé no con la idea de que iba a ser artista sino por necesidad o un medio para expresarme y hacer fotos o hacer autorretratos era una forma de liberación porque al final cuando haces un autorretrato solo estás tú y puedes interactuar de la manera que quieras. TC - En tu fotografía los personajes se encuentran en su ámbito cotidiano pero parecen abocados a esa situación, ¿por qué tu fotografía aborda la soledad? PI - Porque es parte de mí, no es que sea una persona solitaria pero para crear sí me gusta estar sola, no es que yo lo busque, aunque quizá inconscientemente, pero no es que mi temática sea la soledad y yo vaya en busca de ella, es algo más que veo en el resultado, no cuando lo planeo, sí identifico esa mirada de la soledad, pero al momento yo no lo asocio así. TC - Habías estado trabajando como catarsis el autorretrato. Quería preguntarte por las fronteras infranqueables entre selfie y autorretrato. PI - Yo creo que sí existen, es difícil la delgada línea entre una cosa y otra, pero una selfie la hacen para decir que estuviste en un lugar, en algún concierto, en la torre Eiffel, es un poco para pertenecer, una forma de ser parte y un autorretrato es más una exploración de uno mismo. En el autorretrato no estoy pensando en que me vean, es una necesidad de autoexpresión, la intención es diferente. TC - ¿En cuál te sientes más expuesta? PI - En una selfie. Pero cuando dimensionas cuántas personas ven tus autorretratos también es impactante. No dimensionas la capacidad de los medios, hasta dónde llegan, quién lo ve, a veces pasa que si subes estas cosas la gente cree que vives en depresión o de cierta manera la gente genera ideas a partir de lo que ve y en realidad no sabe. Puedes partir de eso o que sea tu elemento de atención, así como para unos la alegría es su punto de creación, todos partimos de diferentes sentimientos o emociones para crear. TC - En este nuevo canal de difusión del arte que es Instagram o las redes sociales en general, parece que a diferencia de antes, donde la obra cobraba vida propia, ahora ya no es la obra lo importante sino el canal, ¿hasta qué punto el arte demanda de tu intimidad para llegar al público? PI - Yo creo que tú decides hasta dónde y qué compartes, siento que lo que hacemos en redes puede ser manipulable. Vas a los museos y la gente ya ni siquiera observa lo que está viendo, ya nada más va para tomarse la foto y después se sigue, no se toma el tiempo
de contemplar lo que está frente a ellos. En mi caso yo trato de no publicar cosas personales, trato de publicar mi trabajo. La cosa es que mi trabajo es parte de mi vida y ahí sí se expone un poco. Siento que cuando muestras esta parte humana hay más empatía y más identificación de la gente, eso me gusta, es uno de mis propósitos, generar esta empatía de identidad, no vivimos en las mismas circunstancias, pero todos partimos de las mismas emociones. Sentir que alguien puede ver una foto mía y lo remita a algo que le pasó antes, le recuerde a algo o simplemente lo ponga a reflexionar, ahí hay una conexión y es donde se genera un vínculo. Eso es lo que a mí me importa lograr. TC - Cuando viste tu obra sola en una exposición individual en la galería Saatchi, ¿sentiste que habías logrado esa trascendencia? PI - En realidad no lo sentí cuando estaba ahí, lo siento cuando la gente se acerca y te dice cosas o cuando por ejemplo me decían en Saatchi que les recordaba a su casa porque ellos eran de Brasil… Es cuando te das cuenta que trascendió de cierta forma en alguien más, no tanto porque estén expuestas sino la retroalimentación. Yo te puedo aventar el mensaje pero el punto es que haya retroalimentación, porque eso quiere decir que logré algo entre el que vio la obra y entre el que la hizo y eso para mí es muy satisfactorio. TC - Volviendo a la exposición en Saatchi, ¿cómo te sentiste en un espacio expositivo tan convencional para tu obra que era toda de cámara de celular? PI - Siento que mi ventaja fue que lo supe plasmar bien. Antes hacían mucho fotografía móvil y fotografía digital y la separaban, y como ahora todo es más rápido en algún punto ya no habrá diferencia. La capacidad que tiene ahora un celular es muy similar a la de una cámara profesional. Ahora que todas las fotos las hice con el celular, ya puedes controlar la velocidad, el obturador, el ISO, te das cuenta que puedes hacer lo mismo que con una cámara, entonces en algún punto ya no tendría que haber esa diferencia porque al final, aunque suene romántico, lo que importa es el mensaje, no el medio, pero por suerte yo supe utilizar ese medio cuando empezó. TC - ¿Qué ventajas tiene para ti que tu cámara de fotos esté en tu teléfono? PI - Es complicado en la ciudad viajar con una cámara grande, porque te la pueden robar, no todo el tiempo la puedes traer, y el celular prácticamente ya viene pegado a ti. Si ves algo, una escena que te guste, la foto la puedes hacer en el momento. La gente cuando traes una cámara hace reacción ante ella y es normal, cuando alguien te toma una foto te predispones porque alguien te está viendo, entonces dejas de ser tú, y con un celular a lo mejor yo te estoy tomando fotos y tú no te estás dando cuenta, es un poco invisibilizarte para lo que estás fotografiando, pasar desapercibida y eso también me gustaba. TC - Y desde un punto técnico y de exploración artística, ¿dónde crees que no es capaz de llegar la cámara digital de un celular? PI - Siento que al principio ese era mi mayor conflicto, sobre todo a la hora en la que quieres hacer impresiones y montaje, los tamaños y la resolución de la foto del celular, seguían siendo muy malos. Por más que la tratara de mantener, se pixeleaba porque las cámaras no eran tan buenas, pero por ejemplo el teléfono que tengo ahorita tiene una cámara de 40 MP, ya hasta tiene más megas que mi cámara profesional. Las marcas ya están avanzando muchísimo

en tecnología y ya tienen efectos para alguien que no sabe usar todas esas funciones, ahora ya te dan modo nocturno, retrato, etc… aunque aún siento que les falta perfeccionar muchas cosas por la calidad de lo digital, pero prácticamente ya es como tener una cámara profesional. TC - ¿Consideras tu trabajo más hiperrealista o surrealista? PI - Creo que surrealista, me gusta esta parte onírica, por eso me obsesiono con cosas de color porque aunque sea una escena cotidiana es darle un poco ese toque de fantasía a la imagen y que también puedas crear tus historias. Me gusta jugar con el espacio, con el color, que sean un poco como pinturas. TC - ¿Dónde tienes tu foco de atención artística en este momento? PI - Pues ahorita voy a seguir con lo de Saatchi, yo creo que lo voy a exponer aquí en mayo y ahorita trabajar con ese proyecto. TC - Estás en un momento clave de tu carrera, sobre todo a nivel internacional, ¿cómo sientes que está en México? PI - Pues no sé, es raro porque sí he logrado más cosas en otros países que aquí. A raíz de esos logros sí te empiezan a voltear a ver y sí te buscan para algo, pero la verdad es que creo que somos un poco malinchistas. TC - ¿Cómo ves la CDMX a nivel creativo desde tu lugar, desde la fotografía? PI - Yo creo que la fotografía en México tiene artistas increíbles, para mí hay mucho nivel aquí. A lo mejor las oportunidades no son tantas, siento que involucrarte en el arte o en los aspectos creativos ya es complejo, tanto laboralmente como para estudiar, pero hay mucho talento, especialmente en la fotografía. TC - Otro elemento clave de tu fotografía es el color, haces un trabajo del color que casi es irreal, ¿qué nos dices de ésto? PI - Sí, soy súper obsesiva del color, siento que puede hacer una foto increíble o la puedes arruinar y si quiero un cierto azul o un cierto rosa, le doy hasta tener esos colores. Es una de las partes más importantes para mí en mi trabajo. TC - ¿Qué color le darías a la CDMX? PI - La verdad muchos, justo en el proyecto que hice para Saatchi, usé muchos colores, la Ciudad es muy folclórica. Traté de no caer en estos clichés mexicanos que cuando vas a otro país todo el mundo tiene, pero sí hay unas cosas muy características de nuestro país, por ejemplo vas al centro y ves restaurantes super amarillos o unas cafeterías verdes, o vas al barrio chino y todo es rojo, a mí me llama mucho eso. México tiene unas cosas visuales muy llamativas, yo no puedo ver a la CDMX de un color, la veo de colores. TC - ¿Cómo sientes los colores de Pineda Covalin? PI - Refleja esa diversidad de colores y texturas que nos rodea en México, siento que la marca lo logra plasmar de manera muy clara con los estampados, con los tonos y materiales que utiliza. «

Time Contact - You say that you feel panic before well being. What does this feeling mean in your work? Paola Ismene - My mother had a very serious accident at the end of 2015. She was hit by a car and was in a coma for months. I was studying photography at the time so I had to put everything on hold in order to take care of her. I left my career and my job for two years, my frustrations arose, I started suffering panic and anxiety attacks and because of that I focused on self portrait photos. When I was 5 years old my mom suffered another accident. When I feel relaxed my body reacts in a totally opposite way. You generally get a panic attack when you’re on the brink of anxiety, but my body works the other way around. It associates that calmness is not normal, because calmness means that something bad will come afterwards. I would wake up from dreams feeling uneasy and that feeling lasted all the time and when I slept I was in a constant state of alert. This was emotionally exhausting so the visual aspect of taking photos is my way of dealing with my life. I began making more personal projects but not with the idea of becoming an artist but out of necessity or as means of expressing myself through photographs or self portraits. It was a form of liberation, because when you finish a self portrait, there is only you, and you can interact however you want. Therefore, when I did that project I wanted to communicate. TC - The people you photograph are seen in their everyday life but they seem doomed to that situation. Why does your photograph address solitude? PI - Because it is part of me. I am not a lonely person, but to create, I like to be alone. I don’t look for it, although unconsciously I might search for it, my subject matter is not loneliness and I don’t go out and search for it, it’s what I see in the end product, not when I plan it, I do identify that look of solitude, but at that precise moment I don’t associate it as such. TC - As a catharsis, you have been working with self-portraits. I want to ask you about unbridgeable borders between a selfie and a self-portrait.
PI - I believe that they do exist. There is a very thin line between one and another, but a selfie is taken because you want to show where you went, to a concert, to the Eiffel Tower, it’s a matter of belonging, a way of being part of, and a self-portrait is more of an exploration of oneself. In a self-portrait I am not thinking of people looking at me, it’s a need for self expression, I feel that the intention is different. TC - In which one do you feel more exposed? PI - In a selfie. But when you estimate the amount of people that see your self-portrait, it is impressive. You don’t measure the power of media, the full extent of their power, who sees it when you upload it, people believe that you live depressed or they just generate ideas from the moment they see something and they really don’t know. You may begin with that or it may be your element of attention. For some, happiness is their starting point to create, we all start off with different feelings and emotions to create, so for me it is very different, and there is a very thin line in between. TC - In this new Art Broadcasting Channel, Instagram, or in social media in general, it seems that unlike it was before in which artistic work came to life, art is not as important anymore as the channel it comes from. Up to what point does art demand of your intimacy to reach the public? PI - I think that it is your decision where and what you share, I feel what we do in social media may be manipulated. If you go to museums, people don’t really observe what they see anymore. They just go to take their picture and then they move on. They don’t take the time to contemplate what is in front of them. In my case, I try not to post my personal life, I rather post my work. The thing is that my work is part of my life so a bit of my life is exposed and I feel that when you share that human side of yourself people have more empathy and they identify with me and I really like that, it is one of my objectives, to generate identity empathy. We don’t live under the same circumstances but we all part from the same emotions, when someone sees one of my photographs and relates it to something that happened before

in their lives, reminds them of something or makes them simply reflect on things, I feel that a connection is made and that for me is something important to achieve. TC - When you saw your work in a solo exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery, did you feel that you have achieved that transcendence? PI - I didn’t feel it when I was there, I feel it when people approach me and tell me things or when somenone said to me in Saatchi that it reminded them of their home in Brazil…That’s when you realize it transcended in a certain way to someone else, not so much because the photos were exhibited but because of the feedback at the end, bI can deliver the message but to get feedback, means that I have accomplished something between the person who saw the work and the person who made it, and that for me is very satisfying. TC - Getting back to the exhibition at Saatchi. How did you feel in such a conventional exhibit area when your work was all from a cellular camera? PI - My advantage was that I knew how to capture my work to be understood. I believe that at some point there won’t be a difference. Before, there was a lot of mobile and digital photography done and the would be separated, and now since everything is much faster, at some point it won’t make any difference. The capacity that a cellular has now is very similar to a professional camera. Since I took all the pictures with the cellular, I was able to control the shutter speed, the ISO, and you become aware that you can do the same work as with a normal professional camera, and at some point there shouldn’t be any difference because in the end, although it sounds romantic, what matters is the message, not the means, but luckily I knew how to use that media when it all started. TC - For you, what are the advantages of having your photographic camera on your cell phone? PI - It is very complicated to travel in the city with a big camera, they can steal it, you can’t carry it all the time and your cell phone is practically glued onto you all the time, so if you see something, a scene that you like, you can take the picture at that moment, and also because people react in a certain way to cameras, which is normal. When someone takes your picture you predispose yourself when someone else is watching, so you stop being yourself, but with a celular I might be taking your picture and you haven’t noticed, so in a way you become invisible as you take the photo and go unnoticed and I liked that very much, to walk in the street knowing that people would not perceive anything. TC - From a technical point of view and artistic exploration, where do you think that a cellphone digital camera is not able to reach? PI - This was my greatest conflict, especially at the time when you want to print and assemble, size and resolution were very bad, so as much as I tried to capture it, the image would pixelate because cameras at that time were no good, but as an example, the telephone that I have now has a 40 MP camera and it even has more megas than my professional camera, brands are advancing fast in technology and they carry special effects which help those who don’t know how to use them, they have night mode, portrait, etc… and obviously they need improvement in digital quality, but it is practically like having a camera. TC - Do you consider your work to be more hyper-realistic or surreal? PI - I think it is surreal, I like the dreamlike experience of it, that’s why I'm obsessed with color, because even though it’s a daily scene, you give the image a touch of fantasy and you can also create your stories, I like to play with space, with color, I want them to be a bit like paintings. TC - Where is your artistic focus at this moment? PI - I am continuing with the work I did for Saatchi. I will present it

it until I get the color. I think that color is one of the most important aspects of my work because it makes such a difference and gives so much to the photograph. TC - What color would you give CDMX? PI - Truthfully, many colors. In the project with Saatchi I used many colors because the City is very folkloric but I tried not to fall into these Mexican cliches that occur many times when you visit another country and that everyone has. Our country has unique characteristics such as the ones we see downtown where restaurants are painted bright yellow, cafeterias are painted in green and Chinatown is all red. All of this attracts my attention. Mexico has very striking visual things and it was my idea to show them because I cannot see CDMX in one color, I see it in many colors. TC - How do you perceive Pineda Covalin’s colors? PI - They reflect the diversity of colors and textures that surround us in Mexico because the brand manages to reflect this in a very clear way with the prints, the tones and materials used. «

here in May and continue working in this Project. TC - You find yourself at a key moment in your career especially at an international level. How do you feel about your career in Mexico? PI - Well I don’t know, it is weird because I have achieved more things in other countries than in Mexico, and because of that success people have started noticing me and looking for my work, but we are “malinchistas”. TC - How do you see CDMX at a creative level from where you stand, about photography? PI - I think that photography in Mexico has incredible artists, the level is high here in Mexico, but there are few opportunities. I believe that it is very difficult to get involved in art or in creative aspects, both in working and studying conditions, but I feel there is a lot of talent, especially in photography. TC - Another key element of your work is color, it is almost unreal. What can you tell us about this? PI - Yes, I am obsessed with color, I can make an incredible photo or ruin it. If I want a certain blue or a certain pink, I try my best to work on

AUTO MECENAZGO GRACIAS AL NEGOCIO COLABORATIVO BEING YOUR OWN PATRON THANKS TO THE SHARED ECONOMY Por: Marta San Juan
Tomé la decisión de invertir en mí, tantos años de bróker en la bolsa, ganando para otros, que había olvidado cuál era la intención final de todo, mis sueños. Así que tomé lo aprendido y con los ahorros compré propiedades para rentar. Mi otra gran apuesta fue invertir en un fenómeno entonces de difícil explicación, la economía colaborativa. ¿Mi sueño? La escultura, tener el tiempo de mi vida dedicado a dar forma con mis manos a lo que fluía por mi cabeza. Pero claro, arte, inversión inmobiliaria, compartir el uso de mi patrimonio con otros conlleva riesgos. Desde el momento que empecé con este proyecto sentí la debilidad de la incertidumbre. Con un par de malas situaciones podría poner en riesgo lo conseguido en el pasado y lo deseado en el futuro. Pero volvamos al principio del futuro. Dejé mi trabajo y empecé a buscar las propiedades que me permitieran realizar mis anhelos. Fueron cuatro en total para empezar, dispersadas por las zonas de más demanda turística de la capital y otras dos en el caribe. Era principios de la década y mi expansión fue inmediata, en tres años había doblado el número de inmuebles dedicados al alquiler temporal a través de una plataforma digital. Pero al tiempo que crecía el negocio aumentaban los problemas. Los
destrozos eran habituales, denuncias de vecinos por ruidos, extravío de objetos, lesionados en las instalaciones de mis inmuebles, intoxicaciones por mal uso de los servicios… Los seguros prestados por las plataformas colaborativas en las que estaban mis inmuebles anunciados, no cubrían las problemáticas constantes de esta actividad empresarial. Pronto pasaba más tiempo resolviendo estos asuntos que trabajando en mi obra escultórica. Así que tomé una decisión, buscar un seguro específico para esta nueva e innovadora oferta de hotelería. Sorprende gratamente que en México, una empresa desarrolle un seguro que cubra de manera específica la actividad laboral tan reciente y novedosa como lo hace GMX Seguros. De nuevo una inversión se hizo ganancia económica y del preciado tiempo. Mis planes de expansión aumentan de manera natural, el rédito de las inversiones y el aumento de demanda constante del turismo que mantiene ocupadas mis propiedades 12 meses al año, hacen que compre nuevas para mantener la oferta. I made the decision to invest in myself, so many years as broker in the stock market, winning for others, made me forget what the final intention of everything was, my dreams. So I took what I had learned and with my savings, I bought properties to rent. My other great bet was to invest in a phenomenon that was difficult to explain back then, collaborative economy. My dream? Sculpting, to spend my time dedicated to create with my hands what flowed through my head. But of course, art, investing in real estate, and sharing the use of my heritage with others carried risks. From the moment I started with this project, I felt the weakness of uncertainty, a couple of bad situations could put at risk what I have achieved in the past and what I wanted for the future.

But let's go back to the beginning of the future, I left my work and I started looking for properties that would allow me to make my wishes come true. I started with four, scattered throughout the areas of more touristic demand in the capital and two others in the Caribbean. It was the beginning of the decade and my expansion was immediate, in three years the number of real estate properties I had for temporary rent through a digital platform had doubled. But as the business grew, the problems increased. Damages were common, complaints from neighbors about the noise, loss of objects, injuries in the facilities of my properties, poisoning by misuse of services... Insurance provided by the collaborative platforms in which I had my properties, did not cover the constant problems of this business activity. Soon I was spending more time solving these issues than working on my sculptures. So I made a decision, I would look for a specific insurance for this new and innovative hotel offering. Surprisingly enough, I found a company in Mexico that has developed an insurance that specifically covers such a novel and recent business activity as mine, GMX Seguros. Once again an investment turned into profit and precious time. My expansion plans increased in a natural way, with the revenue from the investments and the tourist increase the demand grew. Since my properties keep busy 12 months a year, I bought new ones to increase the offer. All of this no longer demands much of my time or attention. Thanks to GMX insurance my first individual exhibition will open in May and I know that no unforeseen incident will make me divert my attention from my art, and the pursuit of my dreams. «

Close to reaching a new decade, I thought about an unusual birthday celebration... I will invite my friends to visit my native country and I will take them to some of the most beautiful places of the land where I grew up. Antigua será nuestra sede, y el hotel Mil Flores nuestro lugar de descanso mientras estemos aquí. Me encanta porque es un hotel de diseñador, lleno de detalles que mezclan lo colonial con lo contemporáneo, y obvio… porque soy decoradora. Cada día haremos una ruta para conocer los alrededores, y pasear por algunos de los doce pueblos que rodean el lago Atitlán. Antigua es una pequeña ciudad en el sur de Guatemala rodeada por volcanes, es famosa por sus edificios coloniales, muchos de ellos restaurados después del terremoto de 1773. La ciudad es una joya del urbanismo y la arquitectura colonial, está llena de historia y tradiciones a solo 40 minutos de la capital conserva sus características, como si el tiempo se hubiera detenido ahí. Empezaremos nuestro recorrido en el parque central, visitando la Catedral, la Capitanía General, después de un paseo por el parque para tomar fotos a los nativos indigenas que visten hermosos trajes típicos. Nuestra siguiente parada será el ‘Museo Casa del Tejido’, muchos de mis amigos son fans de los textiles y tejidos guatemaltecos; aquí podrán apreciarlos, perderse en sus mágicos colores y ver cómo se elaboran con su técnica tan característica. También podrán apreciar la colección de huipiles que ahí se expone y empezar el shopping.
El siguente lugar que visitaremos es la calle del Arco, la más famosa de Antigua que los domingos se convierte en peatonal y los vendedores ofrecen desde artesanías hasta fruta fresca. Está llena de comercios y restaurantes de gran tradición, como el ‘Quesos y Vino’ famoso por el pan regional con aceite de oliva y tomate. Día y noche el Arco de Santa Catalina luce precioso, rematando a lo lejos con el volcán de agua. El arco fue construído como puente entre dos edificios, con un corredor cerrado que permitía a las monjas cruzar de un lado al otro del convento sin romper sus votos de reclusión. Hoy el convento se ha transformado en un hotel de estilo colonial, pero el arco conserva su majestuosa fachada. Al final de la Calle del Arco, se encuentra la iglesia de La Merced, una de las más representativas de la época colonial por sus detalles barrocos. Afuera de la iglesia, nos espera una degustación de platillos típicos, mi recomendación: los famosos panes con chile relleno, son deliciosos. Después de tanto caminar apuesto que más de uno estará listo para un ‘drink’ en un bar de moda con música viva antes de la cena en ‘Los tres tiempos’ para probar los tamales, que son diferentes a los mexicanos, las croquetas de pache o el quixom de solomillo y terminar con un zacapa xo en las rocas. Quienes no quieran volver al hotel caminando pueden tomar un Tuc Tuc.

Empezaremos el día dos en el hotel Casa Santo Domingo, conocido por sus museos de plata y arte precolombino y sus catacumbas. De ahí y para seguir en sintonía, recorreremos el Convento de Las Capuchinas, un buen lugar para darse una idea de cómo era la vida en la época colonial. A una hora y media de Antigua se encuentran el lago Atitlán y el pueblo de Panajachel, y estoy segura que mis invitados caerán enamorados ante la belleza de este pueblo maya, que es el más grande a orillas del lago. La reserva natural de Atitlán es un lugar para gozar la naturaleza, ya sea solo caminando por sus senderos y visitando el mariposario, o sintiendo el vértigo de sus tirolesas y rutas de bici de montaña. Habrá quienes prefieran pasar el día relajandose en las aguas termales y paseando por el pueblo. Otra opción es tomar el crucero por el lago que tarda solo 35 minutos. Para terminar el día una buena pizza de horno de leña de Circus Bar con una cerveza y a dormir. Existen muchos otros pueblitos que podemos visitar en
esos días, a los que tendremos que llegar en lancha, como Santa Catrina Palopó, donde muchos han construido su casa vacacional. Santiago, el pueblo de Maximón, un dios pagano al que los indígenas visitan y le ofrecen puros. San Marcos, el pueblo de los curanderos, si alguien quiere meditar éste es el lugar. Santa Cruz, para los que buscan paz, tranquilidad y un poco de soledad y San Pedro, el pueblo de la fiesta, la diversion y los mochileros. Estoy segura que mis amigos se van a enamorar de ellos porque cada uno tiene una riqueza cultural invaluable y un colorido especial; y qué decir de los 3 volcanes que rodean el lago, el Volcán San Pedro, el Volcán Atitlán y el Volcán Tolimán. Hay tours para subir a cualquiera de ellos pero yo, con gusto, los esperaré abajo. Algunos han llamado al lago Atitlán el lago más bello del mundo… y yo pienso que están en lo cierto. Como en todo viaje, hay muchos lugares que nos quedarán por conocer, pero esa es una gran razón para que mis amigos regresen a mi amada Guatemala. «

Antigua will be our base, and the hotel Mil Flores our resting place while staying there, I love it because it is a designer hotel, full of details that mix the colonial with the contemporary, and obviously... because I am an interior designer. Each day we will make a route to visit the surroundings, and walk through some of the twelve towns that surround Lake Atitlan. Antigua is a small city in the south of Guatemala surrounded by volcanoes, it is famous for its colonial buildings, many of them restored after the earthquake of 1773. The city is a jewel of urbanism and colonial architecture, it is full of history and traditions and only 40 minutes away from the capital; Antigua retains its characteristics, as if time had stopped there. We will start our tour in the central park, visiting the Cathedral, the General Captaincy, and taking a walk in the park to see the natives wearing their beautiful costumes. The natural reserve of Atitlán is a place to enjoy nature, whether it is just walking along its traiks and visiting the butterfly garden, or feeling the vertigo of its zip lines and mountain bike routes. There will be those who will prefer to spend the day relaxing in the hot springs and walking around the town; Another option is to take the cruise on the lake, which takes only 35 minutes. Antes de entrar en materia, cuéntanos un poco de ti y lo que has hecho antes de llegar a Voom. Nací y crecí en la Ciudad de México, estudié ingeniería industrial en la Universidad Iberoamericana y trabajé casi tres años en Bain & Company principalmente como consultor de aerolíneas para clientes como Aeroméxico, Avianca y para la SCT para redefinir la política aeronáutica. Fue ahí donde me enamoré de la aviación. Pasé a Linio, donde llevé la parte de ‘customer care’. Después, me fui a EEUU a estudiar una maestría en administración pública y un MBA. La razón fue que siempre me apasionó la aviación y ésta siempre va de la mano con la regulación. En EEUU trabajé en banca de inversión interna para Cargill. Volví a México para trabajar con Paypal y en 2018 empiezo como Country Manager de Voom. Han sido los meses más importantes de mi carrera. ¿Qué es, cómo surge Voom, y por qué México? Es una historia fascinante. Hace unos 5 años empieza una revolución de la movilidad a nivel mundial, principalmente liderada por empresas de economía colaborativa. Algunas concluyen que el futuro de la movilidad está en el aire, entre ellas Airbus, que decide abrir un centro de innovación en Silicon Valley. Ahí nacen: Altiscope, para el control de tráfico aéreo por inteligencia artificial, Vahana que desarrolla el vehículo autónomo eléctrico -dron humanoy Voom que usa helicópteros y helipuertos con el objetivo de acostumbrar a las personas a volar. Todo esto lleva a la creación de la división de Urban Air Mobility en Airbus.
Clement Monnet y Uma Subramanian diseñan la plataforma en 2016 y lanzan un programa piloto en Sao Paulo, en un mes tuvieron 1,500 pasajeros. Un año después Voom empieza operaciones en Brasil. Gracias a la industria del petróleo, México tiene muy buena infraestructura de helipuertos y pilotos muy calificados. Conocido es el problema de movilidad de su capital. Orgullosamente pasamos a ser la segunda ciudad en donde opera Voom. El próximo 8 de marzo cumple un año en México. ¿Qué ventajas ofrece Voom sobre las compañías de taxis aéreos en México? La primera y más importante es el precio. La contratación directa de un taxi aéreo para un trayecto como el que acabamos de hacer sería aproximadamente $2,000 dlls, con Voom $2,400 m.n. anto púlpito da para mucha proclama, entre los discursos pidiendo hogueras condenatorias estas últimas semanas llama la atención una, la polémica mundial por la posible inclusión del ‘breakdance’ como deporte olímpico en París 2024. Diarios deportivos de todo el planeta, medios generalistas y hasta el órgano oficial del Partido Comunista Cubano hablan del tema, la mayoría para rasgarse las vestiduras, los menos para mostrar el asombro que les produce, ninguno para darle la bienvenida al laboratorio químico que es la llamada familia olímpica. Lo más sintomático del asunto es la queja de muchos países con importantes federaciones de karate al quedar fuera este arte marcial del programa de la cita parisina. B-boys del mundo hagan un ‘spinning’, solo uno, para que con ese desafío gravitatorio enmudezcan los opinadores de sofá, arrastrados por las Leyes de Newton a la orgía del ocio deportivo; de 9 a 5 produzco, de 5 a Morfeo veo deporte. El ‘breaking’ o ‘break dance’ empieza a cocerse en los 70 y en los 80 se expande entre adolescentes de barrio del mundo. Su atractivo la mezcla de un baile robótico y post industrial con piruetas sencillamente imposibles de imaginar, solo unos pocos constantes en su entrenamiento las alcanzan. Su filosofía cinematográfica era canalizar la violencia adolescente a través del baile, el arte, la música y el deporte. Surgió de los barrios neoyorkinos tras el auge de los ‘gangs’ en los 70 y de una fila de jóvenes cadáveres por los choques entre pandillas. Muy superior en ejecución, sobre todo en homogeneidad entre lo deportivo y lo rítmico, que gimnasia rítmica y sin el historial de abusos psíquicos y físicos de ésta. Curioso el agravio con el karate, otra disciplina que logró gran fama entre los chavos de la periferia, en este caso para partirle la jeta al rival, con las películas de Bruce Lee como difusoras planetarias. Otro debate de las aguas de los significados revueltos en los que unos tipos “marchan por la paz” mientras llenan de armas los barrios y otros se auto denominan “voluntarios con ayuda humanitaria” y todo su objetivo es que los arsenales se les sumen para acabar con el contrario. Ya hemos ido a dos guerras mundiales subidos a democracias a las que se habían subido retorcedores de significados. De qué no seremos capaces, lógico que prefieran mamporros olímpicos a echarnos unos bailes, y vayamos a las guerras con banderas blancas y la palabra paz escrita en los drones. «

The most symptomatic aspect of this issue is the complaint of many countries with important federations of Karate becoming aware that this martial art is left out of the program in the Paris event.
