ON THE COVER
from the
SPECIAL MOTHER’S EDITOR DAY TREAT FOR YOU I was recently invited to share my story at an International Mother Earth Day celebration held on Zoom. The idea behind it was to get women to talk about their personal journey of trials and triumph, the things they learnt along the way, and the advice they would give their younger self.
MUM AND BUBS: The cover shot by photographer WAYNE MARTIN is of Rachel Clarke and her nine-month-old daughter Emma. Rachel says it is the little moments that make a big difference as she watches Emma grow. The first burp, first smile, first time she rolled over, are treasured milestones. The new mum says there is so much she is learning everyday from Emma, about appreciating the small things in life.
Ph 09 271 8000 www.eastlife.co.nz
The lady dentist of Persian heritage from North America who organised the webinar explained that in the Persian calendar, the Earth Day is also celebrated as Mother’s Day. It’s a joyous two-inone celebration. Drawing a parallel, she said that just as the Earth is nurturing, embodies fertility, gives birth, nourishes and protects the children of the earth, so does a mother who imbibes the same qualities of selfless giving, as she nurtures her children with unconditional love. There is a good reason why the earth is referred to as Mother Nature or Mother Earth. It was fascinating listening to the brave women across continents who dared to dream big and had their moments of heart-break as they shared their personal highs
and lows. A successful engineer/ technocrat/entrepreneur from the US admitted that working in a largely male-dominated field, she gradually learnt that it’s ok to be uncomfortable, and scared out of your mind as you scale new heights. “I am now comfortable with being uncomfortable,” she admitted about not letting the feeling of insecurity or being a misfit, deter her from achieving her goals. Another young lady who works closely with the UN, spoke about taking on a massive, global water conservation project, she has initiated. Respect! Is the word that comes to mind as I heard her talk about overcoming limitations to make a difference to the planet. It was truly inspiring listening to the women who had jumped hoops to bring about a positive change, literally! A senior lady shared how her and her daughter entertained, and helped people keep fit during the pandemic by dressing up every week as a different character and hosting fun, aerobics classes on Zoom. The images she shared certainly left us all smiling.
The May issue of EastLife magazine celebrates Mother’s Day in all it’s different hues and glory. ‘Mums’ the word! We have three new mums, and a grandmother, share their struggle and pure, unadulterated joy, the lessons they learnt from their little munchkins...the spectrum of emotions they experience as the cup runneth over. Someone described motherhood as the extreme measure of being alive! From beauty treats to recipes, Q & A, some very dynamic women and our relatively new ‘In my backyard’ feature which has fast gained popularity—there is plenty to soak in. Between the pages is a specially created Mother’s Day treat for you which we hope you enjoy. Go on, this is for you!

MOT H E R ’S DAY
Hannah Bradley:
A LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE 28-year-old Hannah Bradley, a former makeup artist is mum to nine-month-old Nami Aerwyna Elizabeth Takano. While the young eco mum initially thought she wasn’t cut out for motherhood, she soon discovered it is one the most fulfilling experiences of her life. “I must confess that I have always been a career person, and didn’t really think about having a baby. However, after meeting my partner Ryotaro Takano, I understood the emotional connection of wanting a child with the person you love,” says Hannah about the momentous decision she made. The new mum admits that she wasn’t really prepared to be a mum as she thought it would change her life completely. “I wasn’t overly excited about getting pregnant,” she says. But after getting past that rollercoaster of emotions, she started to get excited about the
8 | eastlife | may 2022
EastLifeMay22.indd 8
new journey she had taken on. “I was very lucky and had the most amazing midwife and birth experience which makes looking back at the early days, one of happiness. Now I can safely say that seeing my baby happy and enjoying her blossom every day, makes being a mum, one of the most fulfilling things I have ever done.” Hannah says she wanted to be an attachment parent (a parenting philosophy that promotes attachment of parent and infant not only by maximum parental empathy and responsiveness but also physical closeness) and breastfeed, but
also does things as natural and eco-friendly as possible. “When it comes to sustainability, we use reusable diapers, wet cloths and buy second-hand, which makes things so much cheaper in the long run! There is nothing that Nami has new, except for the presents she received,” says the ecoconscious mum. “After being a make-up artist for nine years I am now enjoying being a stay-at-home-mum (SAHM) whilst doing furniture refurbishing as a side business.” Talking about how they chose a baby name, Hannah says,
“My daughter’s name is Nami, which in Japanese translates as ‘Wave’ but her Kanji (Japanese symbol writing) means ‘Summer Seed’. We chose her name for many reasons, one of them being that the balance of earth and water will help make her a very fluid and yet a grounded person. “Being from both, the UK and Japan we speak to her in both languages so that she can become bi-lingual. “Now I can happily say that having a child is the most beautiful experience, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in this world.”

Rachel Clarke:
“THINGS MY BABY TAUGHT ME” she reflects, on the exhaustion during the birthing process.
From as early as Rachel Clarke can remember, she’s wanted kids.
“The love that grew was magical as I got to know Emma, and she casually slid into our lives like she was always there to begin with,” she says.
Rachel who works part-time for Chevron Traffic Services, a business owned by her husband’s family says, “Emma joined us 12 days late at the end of July last year and over these past several months we’ve had some of the most amazing moments. A friend of mine described it so well by stating that we were prepared, mostly, for the lows— the sleepless nights, the inability to decide whether to shower,
www.eastlife.co.nz

That moment your child burps (hooray!), gives their first smile, rolls over for the first time. It is such an overwhelming feeling of pride, joy and wonder!”
Photo Ashley Hopkins
“As much as I would imagine what it would be like, there was no way I would truly know how incredible, tiring, and life-changing it would turn out to be,” says the doting mum to nine-month-old Emma.
Though Rachel had heard about the rush of love that new mums experience when they hold their baby for the first time she doesn’t recall feeling it, at the time. “Maybe due to the 26 hour labour and the two nights of no sleep leading up to that,”
“Now I find I’ve experienced a level of patience, I’ve never needed before, which can be hard when you have a screaming child at 2 am!” About the things her baby taught her, Rachel says, “Through watching Emma I’ve learned to appreciate the smaller things in life. The feel of grass on our feet, the airplane gliding through the clouds, the joy of seeing one of our cats come through the cat door. Life is a little slower and a little more hectic all at once and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings with our little wonder.”

Sharleen Singh:
FROM HEART-STOPPING TO HEART-WARMING MOMENTS Reflecting on her journey to motherhood, new mum Sharlene Singh says she looks back in disbelief. “The notion that I’m now responsible for a little human has not been lost on me!” Diagnosed with hyperemesis (severe type of nausea and vomiting) early on in her pregnancy, it was endless rounds to the hospital that took its on toll on her. “It was the toughest thing physically or mentally that I’ve ever done – with the constant thought of ‘there is no way I can do this’. But here we are nine months postpartum – with our son now earth-side longer than he was in the womb.” Sharlene’s son who is named Kiran, a Sanskrit word for ‘rays of the sun’, entered
10 | eastlife | may 2022
EastLifeMay22.indd 10
the world in a breathtaking fashion – quite literally. “After an emergency caesarean he was promptly whisked away to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) due to trouble with his lungs,” says Sharlene recounting the day her little sunshine was born. “Our little fighter showed the world who was boss, with us finally being able to hold him on day four, and the oxygen machines unhooked the day after. It was an unexpected start to motherhood, and proof that you should throw that birth plan
out the window!” laughs the young mum. “The moment Kiran looks straight into my eyes, I forget all about the ups and downs we’ve been through and the sleep deprivation. I can’t help but feel wonder and pride towards this little human I’ve grown, watching him explore and discover this world around us. Don’t get me wrong, it hasn’t all been sunshine and rainbows, and I absolutely couldn’t have done it without the support of my loved ones. They weren’t kidding when they say it takes a village!
“I thought that I would miss the routine and person that I was, with a job in Marketing that I love, devoting all my spare time to our dog Louie. As an introvert I thrived on solitude and independence. But now I am so much more, and will continue to adapt as Kiran evolves. “So how has motherhood changed me? I’m now a nurturer, a speedy nappy-changer, a kisser of booboo’s, middleof-the-night-cuddler and so much more. I’m Kiran’s mum, and I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

Nana Di and Poppa Col (Diane and Colin Andrew) with grandchildren (l-r) Sydney, Skyla, Chloe, Kayla and dog Hope completes the family picture.
Diane Andrew:
BEING NANA IS A REWARDING EXPERIENCE Being nana to four adorable grandchildren is an amazing experience says Diane Andrew who has been with Times Media for 35 years. One of the things that Diane Andrew, proud nana to four grandchildren, enjoys most about being a grandparent is the quality time she spends with them. Being a grandparent is unconditional love without responsibilities. “It’s absolutely nothing like being a parent,” says Diane, nana to four-year-old Sydney, three-year-old Chloe, eight-month-old Skyla and seven-month-old Kayla. “Being a parent can be hard work – trying to divide your time
www.eastlife.co.nz
EastLifeMay22.indd 11
between work commitments, preparing meals, getting them to complete their schoolwork, rushing them off to sports training as well as trying to look after yourself and other family members and friends. It’s not the parent’s fault that they often don’t have enough time – unfortunately that’s life these days,” she says.
Diane believes that grandchildren are “the reward” for all the hard work and hard times one deals when it comes to bringing up your own children.
“The love you feel for your grandchildren is just like when you first laid eyes on your own children. It’s an incredible feeling that only people who have had children will understand.”
“It can be quite stressful at times as you’re always trying to be the best parent you possibly can. Whereas with grandchildren you don’t have to stress about it at all–you just simply adore them
Being a grandparent is mostly fun and games. And one gets a chance to cuddle and get the best hugs. But, with parenting it is different.
and have fun with them because you do actually have more time,” she laughs. With time also comes patience on being a grandparent. At nana’s home, there is only one rule and that is to have fun and the best time of your life. “I’m a much more relaxed grandparent than I ever was a mother. I suppose my whole attitude is different,” she says, and then adds as an afterthought, “And one more thing is when you have had enough you can hand them back.”

A BLISSFUL SANCTUARY Hairdresser and makeup artist for 20 years, Melanie Butzbach, shares how she used her creativity and passion for gardening to create a beautiful sanctuary in Beachlands. “My husband and I formerly lived in a small townhouse in Howick. Once our two children arrived, we outgrew it very quickly. Five years on we have created our piece of paradise by the beach. This is where my love for gardening began. The one-fourth acre section was overgrown and definitely needing some tender loving care. This gave me the opportunity to start over fresh and create a garden I am proud of. My family have always been keen gardeners so growing up I was always outside helping. I must admit the passion has intensified since having my children. I find it’s a place I can go to recharge my batteries. There is something very satisfying about having your hands in the dirt and head in the sun creating and playing with the beautiful colours that nature provides. The peacefulness of the earth and cascading water features make it a perfect sanctuary. I own a salon that uses natural and organic products, and have recently developed my own NZ Natural Makeup line ‘Bedrock by Melanie’. I’m very passionate about mother earth and am conscious about global warming, animal welfare and clean, healthy

and sustainable living. I get my inspiration from going on walks and enjoying other people’s gardens, discussing ideas with a good friend, Pinterest and visiting plant shops. My husband Leigh and my brother-in-law Jeremy have been amazing with building framing, decking, planter boxes, feature walls and garden art from my designs. I have a tradition that every single holiday I go on, I buy a plant, tree, shrub or sculpture for me to add to my garden. It allows me to keep a story or memory alive. I love shaping plants using topiary methods or espalier to give interest and points of difference around the house. I have a thriving worm farm that does wonders for keeping my gardens well looked after. Sitting outside under the louvre with friends and family in front of the fire place, and surrounded by my garden is my idea of bliss. You’ll find us there entertaining guests most weekends. I recommend everyone should give gardening a go, whether you have the land or even just enough space for a small planter. There is something very satisfying and rewarding about watching a plant grow.” www.eastlife.co.nz

Whitford
Best of both worlds Far from the maddening crowd and barely 10-15 minutes away from the huzzbuzz of Howick, Botany and neighbouring areas, Whitford has been described as the best of both worlds. The pristine beauty of evergreen rolling hills with a stunning landscape that add a sense of calm and rejuvenate the senses makes it an awe-inspiring place to be. The drive through the winding road with its unspoilt skyline, as Whitford is ensconced between two peninsulas, almost feels like a cinematic experience.
Little wonder that city folk and people from overseas have been gravitating toward the Whitford area, and investing in a dream-come-true lifestyle. An eclectic mix of exquisite villas, penthouses, residential blocks and old character homes lined with horse tracks, makes Whitford area an enviable choice with its salubrious, rural setting.
Posh homes with their private helicopter landing pads, and a charming village feel, lined with boutique shops, all make it a very desirable destination to head to.
From tastefully done restaurants, cafes, art gallery, gift and design shops, accounting services, parks, nature trails and golf course. Whitford even boasts of a very popular pet spa, boarding and cattery.

A BIT OF HISTORY The first European settlers George and William Trice certainly knew a good setting when they saw one. When they arrived in 1843, the adventurous Trice brother set up camp at the end of Clifton Road, and decided to call it home. The brothers bought a 600 acre block at Clifton Point and built their home there. After a while they started a productive farm in Clifton Rd, near the village settlement. Another feather in Whitford’s cap was the Nathan’s Whitford Park Estate. With their foot on the style
stakes, the estate was a supplier of ostrich feathers that were used in the fashion trade from 1869 to the 1920s. From the 1860s until 1927 a ferry provided transport from Whitford to Auckland. For those who enjoy exploring a bit of history, you can find the remains of the wharf that is still on-site. HOW DID WHITFORD GET ITS NAME? No one really knows for sure. There are several stories with regards to the origin of the name – all equally interesting. One of them meanders
around the Trice brothers being accompanied over the track across the Turanga by the chief Te Moananui. The stepping stones across the stream were white, and soon after they referred to the area as ‘white ford’, which later became Whitford. Another yarn revolves around Richard Whitford, owner of the flax mill at Waikoupa who decided to take on a job of a postman delivering mail to the settlers. According to one of Whitford’s descendants, the locals were so grateful to him for this service that
they named the area after him. However, a letter to the Howick and Pakuranga Times in August 1972 from a group of residents, stated that the name was changed from Turanga Creek to Whitford because mail was being incorrectly delivered to Tauranga. The name Whitford, they claimed, was taken from L.D. Nathan’s Whitford Park. L.D. Nathan’s sprawling property was initially listed as ‘Whitefoord Park’ in Wises Post Office Directory for 1875-6, but by the time it went on sale for subdivision in 1903 it was known as Whitford Park.

Let’s walk the talk There is so much to explore in terms of nature walks in Whitford, starting with the Mangemangeroa Valley, East Auckland’s hidden gems. The Mangemangeroa Valley is an area of significant ecological and cultural value. Mangemangeroa means ‘valley of the mangemange’, a twisting climbing fern used by Maori to tie raupo thatch to
manuka-framed whare (huts) and for making hinaki (eel traps). The Mangemangeroa to Shelly Park Beach Path follows the Mangemangeroa Creek. It passes through a diverse landscape of farmland, native forest, and unique estuary and salt marsh habitat. The main entrance and car parking
area are at 108 Somerville Road, next to the barn. The walkway can also be accessed from Sandspit Road, Pohutukawa Avenue, Hayley’s Lane and Point View Drive. From the Somerville Road entrance, pathways lead through pasture to the main walkway. The walkway passes mature and regenerating native bush, freshwater creeks,
mangroves and mudflats. Along the forest track you are likely to see or hear tui, kereru; (NZ pigeon), piwakawaka (fantail), tauhou (silvereye) and riroriro (grey warbler). In the estuarine areas, pukeko and moho-pereru (banded rail) prefer mangroves and rushes, while the muddy channels attract kotare (kingfisher), white-faced

The walk includes steps and some short steep sections. It’s not a flat walk, but the breathtaking views and bush experience make the effort well worth it.
There are several shorter walk options you can add on from the main path. These include the Rotary Loop (a short half hour track leaving from the main car park) and the walk to Archie’s Lookout. At low tide it’s possible to walk from Shelly Park Beach to Cockle Bay.
If the weather’s wet the path can be slippery, so watch your step.
The path finishes at The Sandspit, which exits onto Sandspit Road.
heron, a variety of shags and torea (oystercatchers).
Another gem is the Wades Walkway at Whitford that can be accessed from the roundabout in Whitford or from Wades Road. The track is loose gravel and is flat. Suitable for mountain bikes. To make your own loop walk starting from the Whitford roundabout: at the end of Wades walkway turn left into Wades Road, at the next junction, turn left (still Wades Road) then right into Whitford Road to return to the start. Allow at least an hour.

CAPTURING THE MOMENT
P
what a great click! The Howick Photographic Society, in conjunction with the Auckland Festival of Photography and Howick’s 175th anniversary celebration, will showcase a large selection of images by awardwinning and emerging photographers.
The Howick Photographic Society Inc. has been active in Auckland’s Eastern suburbs since 1956, inspiring the love and art of photography. The Howick Camera Club (as it was known then) was founded by Laurie Longstaff, an Englishman who came to Howick in the early 1950s. A keen amateur photographer, Laurie belonged to a camera club in England and focused on this interest while working in Australia before settling in New Zealand. At that time, the nearest camera clubs to Howick were the Auckland Photographic Society and the North Shore Camera Club, now North
18 | eastlife | may 2022
EastLifeMay22.indd 18
Shore Photographic Society. Laurie found an ally with photographic interest, the local grocer, Doug Webster. They eventually called a public meeting to consider the formation of a group of like-minded people in Howick who might be interested in starting a photography club. This meeting was held on Thursday, 19 April, 1956 in the commercial rooms of Land Agent Norman Gibbs in Cook Street, Howick. Twenty-seven people attended the meeting. Those present agreed that a photographic club should
be formed and decided to name it ‘The Howick Camera Club.’ The club initially catered for monochrome (black and white prints) and colour (slides.) Those who preferred prints were expected to do all their own processing, including enlarged mounted prints. A far cry from the ease with which photographs are processed in today’s digital era! The Howick Photographic Society currently has a strong following of members that range from the very experienced through to those just starting out on their photographic journey. Experienced members regularly hold tuition
forums for those wishing to improve and warmly welcome anyone with an interest in this art form with workshops, outings and competitions available for everyone. The club has a strong history of success in local, national and international competitions. Physical meetings, in pre and post Covid times are held at the clubrooms below the Bridge Club at the Howick Recreation Centre complex. At the moment, all meetings are conducted on Zoom. The photographs on display are all available for purchase in any size required for your home or business.

Q A WITH
l e i T n a v y r Ker ER FARMS) (BOKAY FLOW
From Mother’s Day to birthdays and anniversaries, because there’s always a special day for special someones, East Auckland local, Kerry van Tiel, nurses her young charges to ensure they’ll rise to the occasion. Recently, EastLife spoke with Kerry, daughter of Bokay Flower Farms’ founders Bernie and Pat Kay. Kerry van Tiel
Do you live as well work at the Bokay property in Ramarama? Either way, do you grow flowers in your own backyard? My son [Jacob] and father [Bernie] live at the property. I work there but live in Botany. I grow flowers at work and have a green lawn, green shrubs and low maintenance garden at home. Does Bokay mean ‘be okay’, or does it stand for: ‘Bernie (o)Kay’? Neither of the above! As well as (obviously) being a play on the word ‘bouquet’, the business name is because its owners (my mum and dad) were ‘both Kays’. What makes flowers perfect gifts for special occasions, including Mother’s Day?
20 | eastlife | may 2022
EastLifeMay22.indd 20
It’s like you’re giving the gift of emotion – from love and appreciation to sympathy and, in some cases, even just as an apology. It’s the communication of the deepest feelings in the most elegant manner; receiving flowers is so beautiful as no words need to be spoken. Which flowers were your mum’s favourites? Which flowers could you give a woman who had hectares of them? My mother [Pat] loved white lilies, however the last flowers I gave her – in hospital shortly before her passing – were pink roses and lisianthus to celebrate her 50th wedding anniversary. She loved them and I can still picture the bouquet today. You can’t go wrong with roses because they are so
traditional and beautiful. How did your family’s passion for flowers blossom? I was born in Kaitaia and moved to Pakuranga when I was four, starting at Riverhills School aged five. But just a few months later, we moved to Papua New Guninea as my father was posted there with the NZ Police. After we returned to NZ, we moved to Drury then on to Ramarama and that is where the flower farm began, from a five-acre plot of rugged land. I was 12 years old when Bokay flower Farms was born [in 1980]. My father always had a passion for nature. He wanted to farm animals, but the capital required to put dairying (for example) out of their reach. Being the amazing mother
and wife Mum was, she followed my father in his dream and they grew a beautiful business together. When did you join the business formally and what’s your role now? In 1993. My role is ‘a bit of everything’! I’m in packhouse processing flowers, in the greenhouse and doing deliveries as often as I’m in the office. Is your dad still involved? How hard has he found it to hand over the reins? Losing my mother was devastating, for all of us, for my father in particular. Mum was the glue that stuck us together and things are just not the same since. She fought a long, courageous www.eastlife.co.nz

battle for six and half years, but she was still seen breezing into the packhouse to gather flowers, or just to say hello to the staff who all respected and loved her dearly. I put everything into the business to help Dad after Mum passed, hoping he would start enjoying a bit more time to himself. However, handing the reins over has not been easy; Dad thinks things will crash in his absence, but I’m the kind of person who will not let any challenge beat me. Having said that, Dad recently bought a motor home, so we will see him less now, which is great because he definitely deserves some ‘Bernie time’. Are your children keen to follow in your footsteps, down the garden path so to speak? www.eastlife.co.nz

I have three children all in their twenties, including Cameron, who’s an accountant based in London, and Rebekah who works as a show jumping barn manager in Florida. My other son, Jacob, trained as a mechanic in the army before joining the business two years ago. With Jacob’s involvement it will be easier for Dad to take a step back. There is a lot to learn, but Jacob is learning fast!
everlasting love and purity. Anthurium are great for brides too as they’re waxy long-lasting and heart shaped.
Bokay specialises in gerbera, anthurium, iris, solidago and gypsophila. What makes these blooms so popular?
If you could be Minister of Agriculture, what would you do first (for horticulture) and why?
Gerbera are colourful, joyful and a bright and happy addition to bouquets. Solidago is a filler used in bouquets, while gypsophila is a dainty, tiny white flower ideal for bridal bouquets, symbolising
I’d make it a whole heap easier to bring bulbs and plants into the country. I’d reorganise MPI [Ministry for Primary Industries] and make it possible for our plant matter to be delivered in a timelier
manner. I’m tired of all the red tape! If you could invite any three people (living or dead) to dinner, who and why? This sounds boring as my dinner parties would usually include more captivating people, but it would have to be Jacinda Ardern, Ashley Bloomfield and Christopher Luxon. I’d lock all the doors until the dinner party had finished; I have a lot of questions for them to answer! eastlife | may 2022 |

STEPHANIE CHEOK Weebake (Cakes) Ph: 021 265 9699 E: weebakecakes@gmail.com What started ten years ago as a hobby, turned into a flourishing business for Stephanie Cheok, the skilled cakemaker and decorator, behind WeeBake (cakes). The best thing about the business that celebrates life’s precious moments is the customer satisfaction and “bringing cake dreams to life for my customers,” says Stephanie. The secret behind her success is working closely with her customers to make sure they get a cake created for their specific needs. “Every cake is custom-made to their individual requirement which makes them even more special. I always put in 110 per cent effort in my work,” says the dynamic lady. Stephanie believes that the requisites for a skilled cakemaker are patience, attention to detail, and a passion for cake making and decorating. Ask her about her most challenging creation and the lady behind Weebake (cakes) talks about creating an elaborate cake that reached new heights. “It was my daughter’s 7-tier wedding cake decorated with lots and lots of sugar flowers,” she says. As for the icing on the cake, it’s, “Customer feedback, seeing how much my customer enjoy their cake is what keeps me motivated.”

LAVENDER, ORANGE & ALMOND CAKE One of Robyn’s go-to cakes in summer. The mixture of lavender with orange screams girly afternoon tea. INGREDIENTS • 5 sprigs of fresh lavender flowers • 1 & 1/2 cups caster sugar • 250g butter • 2 fresh oranges • 5 eggs • 3 cups ground almonds
• 1 tsp baking powder Toppings • 1/2 cup sliced almonds • 1 tbsp icing sugar • zest of 1 orange
METHOD Place the fresh lavender and caster sugar in a food processor and pulse until the lavender turns to fine granules. Slice the top off the whole oranges, and place the oranges in a medium pot. Cover with water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour until soft. In a food processor, puree the oranges, along with their skins. Set aside. Preheat the oven to 180 °C and line a cake tin with baking paper. In a large mixing bowl, cream www.eastlife.co.nz

the butter and lavender sugar together until light and fluffy. Add in the orange puree and the eggs. Beat for 1 minute until thoroughly combined. Fold in the ground almonds and baking powder. Pour the mixture into your lined cake tin and sprinkle the sliced almonds on top. Bake for 1 hour or until cooked all the way through.
The sweet, fragrant flavour of lavender pairs nicely with orange, while the oils are a natural relaxant.
Let the cake cool slightly for 15 minutes, then turn out. Sprinkle with icing sugar and orange zest to serve. Serves 8. eastlife | may 2022 |

BLONDE ON BLONDIE ALL WRAPPED UP Sometimes what’s on the outside is almost as important as what goes on the inside. That’s where Multix Greener ticks all the right (lunch)boxes. Featuring clingwrap, snack and sandwich bags, products in this range are made from 50 percent plant-based materials, including sugarcane, which absorbs CO2 as it grows, making for a more sustainable alternative to plastic come lunch or snack time. Multix Greener bags and wraps (RRP from $2.50-3.50 per pack) are available from supermarkets.
Debbie Harry once had a love that (it soon turned out) had a heart of glass. Fortunately, Whittaker’s Blondie has a heart of toasted caramel and milk flavours, with a smooth buttery finish and comes as bars, blocks and minislabs. But do blondes really have more fun? There’s only one way to find outpick one up (RRP $1.99-$5.50, a cheap date!) at a supermarket near you!
GOOD BUDS, GREAT SUDS A self-proclaimed ‘bromance’ of brewers has seen a certain IPA (Indian Pale Ale) ‘hop’ to the top of shopping lists and the reasons for this are (ironically) not at all ‘hazy’. Created by some likely lads from Clayton Hops and NZ Hops, Motueka Hazy IPA sees the flavours of the south enjoyed nationwide, with help from Moa Brewing Co. Tropical and citrusy, this beloved brew (4.9% ABV) is available from supermarkets and other liquor outlets RRP $13.99 per sixpack.
UPPER CUPPAS From creamy cappuccinos and foamy flat whites to inspired latte art, our morning cuppa doesn’t need to be available in any colour as long as its black! As the Isola Bio range of organic, plant-based milk is quickly proving, coffee connoisseurs are practically frothing at the opportunity to top off their morning brew with something special. Featuring soy and oat varieties, this range is available from supermarkets and health food stores (RRP $6.19 per 1L carton) nationwide.

GLAUCOMA AND YOUR LIFESTYLE KRISTINE JENSEN, owner–optometrist discusses Glaucoma, the leading cause of blindness in New Zealand and measures to prevent it. Affecting the optic nerve through either high eye pressure or reduced blood flow, this silent thief of sight if left untreated causes gradual loss of our peripheral vision and will eventually lead to blindness. The good news is, with regular eye exams early detection is possible. Glaucoma is treated by lowering the intraocular pressure (IOP), either through medicated eye drops, laser or surgery. If you have glaucoma you may have wondered how your lifestyle may affect your risk of glaucoma progression. There are things you can do to help, here is our top list: GET MOVING! Regular aerobic activity such as walking, cycling or jogging, naturally lowers your IOP. Interestingly, this effect occurs after a mere five minutes of activity so even small amounts on a regular basis may be beneficial. If you have glaucoma, be aware that lifting heavy weights and downward facing yoga poses will increase your IOP. If you have a particular type of glaucoma called pigment dispersion glaucoma, aerobic exercise may increase your IOP. If you are a swimmer, try to wear larger goggles as small, tight fitting goggles do increase intraocular pressure while worn. WHAT YOU DRINK While hydration is important for our wellbeing, excessive water intake (one litre or more over 15 minutes) can increase IOP, so take care to drink your fluids throughout the day, rather than in one hit! Limit coffee to two cups per day as caffeine can increase eye pressure but on the other hand, tea may actually lower your glaucoma risk! Furthermore, daily alcohol causes a
slight elevation in IOP, so limit your alcohol intake. WHAT YOU EAT • A diet rich in antioxidant and nitrate bearing foods is recommended. • Green, leafy vegetables; bok choy, spinach, kale and lettuce • Cruciferous vegetables; broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage • Root vegetables; beetroot, radishes, turnips • Fruits; berries, citrus and peaches • Omega-3 fatty acids with their natural anti-inflammatory properties lower the risk of glaucoma. So include oily fish, such as salmon and sardines, nuts and seeds such as flaxseeds and chia seeds. GENERAL HEALTH Your cardiovascular health plays an important role in the health of your optic nerve. It is important to control high blood pressure and cholesterol either through medication or lifestyle changes if appropriate. Furthermore, excessive blood pressure lowering may negatively impact glaucoma control so it is important that your eye care professional and general practitioner work together to ensure your medications are working well for you. Being overweight is associated with both high intraocular pressure and sleep apnoea, which both increase your risk of glaucoma. MEDITATION AND BREATHING Deep nasal breathing is considered beneficial for our overall health and mental wellbeing as well as having a positive impact on our brain and optic nerve. Daily breathing practice results in increased blood flow throughout our body, brain and eye.

WHAT’S UP WITH ANGELA
SUCCESSFULLY STEPPING FROM ‘SALE’ TO ‘SETTLEMENT’ Understanding the key steps between a property sale and final settlement, can produce a smooth and hassle-free transition. With more than two decades’ experience in Real Estate sales, ANGELA RUDLING knows the process inside out. She shares some top tips, so you can confidently understand the process. ‘SOLD’ A property is ‘sold’ when any applicable conditions of sale have been met and the purchase is declared ‘unconditional’ by lawyers, both the purchaser’s and yours as the vendor. ‘FINAL INSPECTION’ Agents should arrange the ‘final inspection’ at least two working days prior to settlement, for peace of mind and to allow adequate time for any outstanding issues to be resolved. Purchasers visit the property to check the dwelling and chattels are in the same (or expected) condition as when purchased. Occasionally a condition of sale might require vendors to make alterations or repairs; this is the purchaser’s opportunity to inspect. Agents attend, but they cannot legally undertake an inspection on behalf of a purchaser. ‘SETTLEMENT’ This is the prearranged date the purchasers pay the final balance of the purchase price, and then ownership transfers from vendor to purchaser. It is advantageous for the purchaser to encourage settlement as early as possible on the settlement date, however with final steps conducted by lawyers, it is sometimes not possible to
guarantee a result prior to 4pm. Very rarely settlement is delayed, and in this situation a financial penalty applies for each 24-hour period of delay, this figure is at a normally higher rate of up to 14 per cent and causes considerable inconvenience to vendors. Advance planning is vital to reduce the risk of any issues not being concluded in a timely manner. Current owners are responsible for leaving the property in pristine order – including furniture removal and cleaning in preparation for the new owners. Agents normally take responsibility for the handover of keys, garage and/or gate remotes. We usually suggest they be placed in a predetermined place within the property, except for one set held back to be given directly to the new owners once the settlement transaction is confirmed by appropriate lawyers. As agents, we encourage you all to pre-arrange as much as possible, so you can seamlessly plan your move. If a sale could be on your horizon, Angela would love to chat to you. THE ‘WHATEVER!’ VIRUS. IT IS VERY SYMPTOMATIC! BILL POTTER – Maverick Thinker. Global Speaker. Personal Power Coach. Bill has made personal presentations in 53 countries. Here is a summary of a keynote to 7,600 in Hong Kong https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToRhF22nARM The exclamation whatever!... has been present in our communities for a very long time. This word is a ‘virus’, and mostly affects the young. Those who use it in this way, confirm that they have likely been ‘infected’, and must isolate immediately, until they are brought to their senses. There are three ‘variants’ to this ‘virus’. The person who utters it, means... ‘whatever you say’, ‘what will be, will be’ or ‘I don’t care’! This triggers the main ‘sideeffect’ of this condition, simply known as...‘indifference’. But worse, there are more symptoms that will enter your ‘psyche’. They can make you selfcentered, aloof, insensitive, careless or even unconcerned. Fortunately there are ‘vaccines’ at the ready. They include attention, caring, concern, respect, research and involvement. In a leaderless and directionless society, the world needs ‘all hands on deck’.
re-introducing the almost forgotten objective, to live ‘deliberately healthy’. Don’t smoke. Exercise. Eat properly. Sleep well etc. Governments... Stop telling us how many died. Tell us how many lived. Stop telling us more variants are coming. Tell us that we have new tools to protect ourselves. Stop talking at us and start talking with us! Thank goodness for the many amazing people, who stepped up to help make our world a better place. Thank you great ‘frontliners’ for operating pandemic road blocks... to caring for those badly impacted physically!
This current ‘manufactured’ pandemic has shown how the focus has been on fear and control.
My LeaderSpeak© Course 2022, will be available in June 2022. It is only for achievers, who have the courage to inspire and lead, especially for those who have ‘lost their way’ during’ the Pandemic. I am a lifelong ‘Maverick’, so I do things ‘differently’. Many Leader courses do not! If you want to believe in yourself and in a new good future... contact me. Now is good! Cheers. Bill.

FROM THE EXPERT’S DESK
THE SMART MONEY Project Management is vital in uncertain times, says interior design expert, ANGELA HILL, consultant for Refresh Renovations East Auckland/Manukau.
For many of us, the way we live in our homes has changed. Perhaps we’re working from home these days, or catering to a different family dynamic. We may be considering a redesign to create more ergonomic or multifunctional spaces, or it may be time for a facelift or a modernising upgrade to our kitchens or bathrooms. Aucklanders spent a total of $866 million on our home renovations in the year ended December 2021, directing disposable income towards construction projects in the absence of other shopping or travel temptations. East Auckland/Manukau consultant for Refresh Renovations Angela Hill says the most successful renovation projects are overseen by a specialist Project Manager. “Project management is essential for scheduling, planning, and sourcing materials. Effective oversight means we stay fluid and adaptable to change if things go off course.” Angela has over ten years’ experience working on residential projects. As a graduate of the Nanette Cameron School of Interior Design, Angela brings unique insight to the Refresh Renovations team, which specialises in seamless, end-to-
end project management, turning renovation dreams into reality. The last few years of restrictions, isolation periods, material shortages and price increases have created ongoing challenges across the building and design industries. For homeowners, these challenges have given rise to a desire to create positive changes in our living spaces. “In the current climate, careful project management is absolutely essential for a successful renovation, and we’re receiving a clear message from our clients. They want to feel good, to take back control of their lives and have something to look forward to.” With building and design environments in a constant state of flux, Refresh’s well-established systems and processes along with robust project management principles provide an easy platform for swift adaptation if and when it becomes necessary. “We have a full tool kit of all the trades you could need for your project. We’ll handle everything for you from start to finish. It’s a great time to renovate your kitchen or bathroom. Small scale projects like this are easily managed,” she says.
House overdue for a renovation? Relax and let Refresh manage the entire project for you, even if you live out of town. Refresh is your local home renovation specialist – we’re locals who live in the area and can manage your project from start to finish. Refresh Renovations can renovate kitchens and bathrooms right through to complete home renovations. Using our online customer portal you can track your project remotely including specifying products and seeing pictures and videos from site. Talk to us today.

As a peer-to-peer lender we offer competitive investment rates to investors seeking an alternative to traditional saving or investment options. Seeking experts’ opinions, in fields such as economics, is one of the ways we share information to our investors, using live webinars that are open to all to join. Last month we hosted a webinar with Christina Leung, Principal Economist at NZIER, to discuss how happenings in the global economy are impacting New Zealand. The Q&A session with
Christina came up with several projection especially around inflation. We asked Christina what was being forecasted in terms of inflation and what does this mean for bank deposit and interest rates ahead? We forecast annual CPI inflation to rise above 6% over the coming year, reflecting a broad-based increase in prices including food and fuel. There had been discussion of inflation rising above 7% given the
Make the most of it.
recent surge in fuel prices, but with the Government’s latest announcement of a 25c cut in fuel exercise taxes for at least three months, this will reduce headline inflation. Leaving fuel prices aside, we are in a higher inflation environment, and with inflation likely to remain well above the Reserve Bank’s inflation target band of 1% to 3%, higher interest rates are likely over the coming year. Although inflation is undoubtedly strong, we expect to see a more gradual tightening from later this year as around 60% of mortgages are due to re-fix interest rates, along with the forecasted OCR to reach 2.5% by middle of next year. Those rolling off 2% fixed
mortgage rates will need to adjust to a rate with a 4% or 5% handle on it, so we expect households will likely rein in discretionary spending in the face of these higher mortgage repayments. Devils Bridge, Antigua (top); Antiuga Prickly Pear Island (bottom left), English Harbour (bottom right).
Antigua named by Christopher Columbus in the late 1400s is a sovereign island country with an undulating coastline of 95 miles. Known as a major yachting hub in the Caribbean for the past 60 years it’s been home to one of the largest charter shows. The beaches you find here are out of this world with the lowest water temperature (in the mid 20s) making it a beach lover’s paradise. Every Sunday they throw a party at Shirley Heights, one of the best places to watch the sunset
on the island. It’s an old military lookout gun battery so you get fantastic views of the English and Falmouth harbours. There is so much history everywhere you look. Whilst you are there, do try the bbq and rum punch up but be warned, the rum is strong. There are great hikes on the island also boggy peak or Mount Obama—one of my favourites. I recommend hiring a jeep and just hitting the road. The island isn’t too big so you can always find your way back, eventually. www.eastlife.co.nz
