Local man jailed for child abuse imagery A

Howick man has sentenced to four years and nine months in prison for knowingly possessing and distributing child sexual abuse imagery and blackmail. Thirty-year-old Earl Gary Chatterton was sentenced at Manukau District Court last Wednesday to four years and nine months in prison.

The sentence is the result of a joint investigation by NZ Police and the Department of Internal Affairs which commenced in August 2018. Chatterton admitted 26 charges involving the distribution and possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation imagery and one charge of blackmail. The joint investigation revealed

Chatterton distributed, copied and was in possession of over 80 objectionable image files and attempted to blackmail several people for financial gain. Detective Senior Sergeant Eddie Sutherland says that the sentencing shows that police “along with our partners will not tolerate this abhorrent offending”.

“Police, DIA and Customs have a very close working relationship,” he said. “The strength of the three agencies working collaboratively means we are more effective when it comes to identifying and bringing to justice those who seek to exploit defenceless and vulnerable children and adults within our community.”

Tim Houston, Censorship Manager, Internal Affairs, said: “We work closely with NZ Police and Customs to ensure these criminals are caught and brought to justice. “We proactively share knowledge and insight to identify these individuals who offend against our most vulnerable members of society.”

R

ockabye Early Learning Centre at Aviemore Dr recently hosted a Wheels Day to raise funds for Little Heart Day for NZ Heart Kids. Preschoolers dressed in red, brought along their scooters and bikes and had an amazing time practicing their riding skills on a pretend road that the preschool created in their car park. A special visit from ‘Maia bear’ the mascot for NZ Heart Kids added cheer as the kids rode around the track. The children were very excited to see her cool dance moves, the best one being the floss. This was a good start to children getting involved in community activities and raising awareness for young New Zealand Heart Kids.

Ross to stand again despite SFO charges By JIM BIRCHALL Embattled local MP Jami-Lee Ross has vowed to stand again for the Botany electorate in September’s general election. Ross was approached by the Times for comment on whether he would withdraw from the election race in light of him being charged by the Serious fraud Office, along with three others, for their part in the National Party donations scandal. Ross said: “Re: elections, nothing has changed.” He was hamstrung from making further comment about the SFO charges by sub judice laws. Ross is a former National Party MP for Botany, but now is an independent MP after resigning from the party in October 2018. He appeared in Auckland District Court on Tuesday, February 25 to

answer charges brought by the Serious Fraud Office in relation to the National Party donations impropriety. Yikun Zhang (48), Shijia (Colin) Zheng (34) and Jami-Lee Matenga Ross (34) each face two charges of ‘Obtaining by deception’. Hengjia (Joe) Zheng (34) faces one charge of ‘Obtaining by deception’ under the Crimes Act and another of ‘Providing false or misleading information’ under the Serious Fraud Office Act. The charges relate to donations paid to the National Party. He, along with his co-defendants have pleaded not guilty to the SFO charges. He was ordered to surrender his passport and was remanded on bail till June 10, when he must re-appear. He must reside at his home address.

Howick Local Board The Howick Local Board held their second meeting of the year at Pakuranga Library on February 17. The first deputation was heard from disability connect, who are petitioning for a fully wheelchair and disability access within the new aquatic centre at Barry Curtis Park. The board requested Service, Strategy, and Integration investigate options. Representatives from East Auckland Tourism Cherry Taka and Annette Smart outlined the organisation’s vision to grow the local economy through promotion of videos showcasing the area as a tourist destination (the quoted cost is $18,000 for video production). Neal Holt, who was recently in the news after his daughter being attacked on Eastern Beach by a rouge dog, made a presentation, along with Sandra McGill about on-going issues with dogs Stating he was “fed up with situation on eastern beach”, Holt

pointed out a lack of signage on the beach regarding dog control (there are five signs currently), and bemoaned the lack of enforcement. The alleged dog and owner involved in the incident is yet to be found and animal management have closed their file. Sandra McGill was concerned with “ a lack of a system (that) allows people to camp unpaid” within Macleans Park at the beach’s eastern end, of particular concern to her was the gate being left open allowing for said freedom campers. She also expressed a desire for the reintroduction of park rangers to combat “church groups” and “families from South Auckland” using pink traffic cones to save areas for their members to park. The board voted to appoint member Bo Burns as their elected representative at the 2020 local government AGM in Blenheim in July. Burns was nominated by vicechair Spiller.

olice are investigating a stabbing incident at a reserve on Cyclades Place in Shelly Park on Friday night. Local residents who did not want to be named reported a “car speeding down the road” at around 10pm on February 28. This was followed by “yelling and screaming...and a person yelling for help.” An eyewitness also stated that a blood-stained t-shirt was “stashed in the wheel well of the car”. The t-shirt was believed to be recovered by an eyewitness on Sunday morning and subsequently turned over to Police. In a statement, Detective Sergeant Scott Gemmell of Counties Manukau East police said: “At around 10 pm, two groups got into

A co-owner of the Masala Restaurant chain has been jailed for hiding millions of dollars in cash sales and laundering large amounts of it. Rupinder Singh Chahil – who resided in Howick - was sentenced today at the Auckland High Court to three years and two months in prison, plus a $50,000 fine, on nine money laundering charges and 34 tax evasion charges. A former accountant, Vijay Kumar Gupta, was also sentenced on Friday to 10 months home detention and ordered to pay $5,000 in reparations. Inland Revenue spokesman Tony Morris says the evasion wasn’t particularly sophisticated but was carried out on a massive scale. “Chahil provided 114 individual GST returns to Inland Revenue on behalf of the Masala Related Companies, which together concealed more than $6.5 million of mainly cash sales,” Tony Morris says. “The tax offending was linked inescapably to the money laundering but the money laundering was far more complex, involving multiple bank accounts here and overseas.

“Chahil and another co-owner, Joti Jain, collected cash from the Masala Restaurants, and delivered the money to Gupta to be laundered. “Gupta controlled the deposit of large amounts of cash into bank accounts, transferred the cash to overseas banks, purchased large amounts of foreign currency, and then brought the money back to New Zealand.” The tax offending spanned six years, from April 2008 to April 2014 through regular, twomonthly false returns to IR. The money laundering took place over 14 months through a series of transactions from 15 February 2012 to April 2013. “Tax evasion hurts everyone because taxes are what fund essential items like hospitals, schools, and national parks. On a more basic level, tax evasion allows unscrupulous people to get a leg up over their competitors,” Tony Morris says. “Hiding their cash sales, and laundering the proceeds of their offending, meant the Masala Restaurants were inevitably able to undercut other restaurants. “The tax evasion and money laundering were uncovered at a tremendous public cost. It required a substantial effort to

detect, uncover and prosecute this case. “The investigation took longer than it should have because Chahil had false responses prepared to deliberately frustrate the enquiries. IR’s investigation into the money laundering meant contacting tax authorities in Australia and India where he and Gupta tried to hide their criminal proceeds. “The offending itself caused significant financial loss to society. The money laundering was designed to hide the tax evasion and allow Chahil to enjoy the fruits of his crime at society’s expense,” Tony Morris says. Joti Jain, who was a former co-owner of the companies running the Masala chain, pleaded guilty to 21 charges of tax evasion and was sentenced to nine months home detention in 2018. Gupta pleaded guilty to nine charges of money laundering along with Chahil who also pleaded guilty to 34 charges of tax evasion in October. Chahil previously had imposed and served a sentence of Home Detention for charges relating to providing false or misleading information to Immigration New Zealand.

Easter artists wanted E

aster artists from across the range of media are being sought for a popular local Easter Art exhibition now into its 14th year. Exhibition organisers from Cession Community Trust are looking for for fresh perspectives and new artists in 2020 to join with existing artists for the Pathways exhibition. Stations of the Cross Easter Art Exhibition has been running at the Depot in Lloyd Elmore Park since Easter 2007. Brett Jones, local pastor and chair of Cession Community trust recalls the early beginnings as a group of creatives launched the first Stations experience as a journey, through art, that followed the Jesus’ walk to the Cross. Since then around 30 artists exhibit annually with hundreds of art lovers enjoying their work. The exhibition now takes place within a themed set that allows attenders to join artists on a journey through the art, across a range of media including painting, photography, mixed media sculpture, film, poetry and much more. Along the way, new artists from a wide range of backgrounds and experience levels have joined in. Long-time Howick resident Joan Carter was a new Stations artist in 2019. Joan took up painting as a retirement gift to herself and treated herself to several years of tuition with a local artist. Under pressure from an artist friend who had previously contributed to Stations exhibition, she agreed to “give it a go” in 2019 while secretly thinking she would probably pull out when the time came to exhibit. “When I was told the theme of

A striking stencil done in Banksy style – it was probably the piece of the exhibition. The artist is David Pitman of Howick and the piece is called “Death to Selfie”. Photo supplied

“The Street” I had an immediate idea which overwhelmed me until I put it all together on canvas and laminated cards. I surprised myself and others by becoming part of the exhibition. After last year I thought I wouldn’t have such inspiration again but when the theme for this year was given, I was off and away with a big idea running around my head!” Joan revels in the opportunity art provides to combine a spiritual insight with a visual medium. For local photographer, Katie Buckley, the opportunity to exhibit at Stations was a deeply personal one. “I first experienced Stations of the Cross as an art lover and then

in 2013, after going through a painful miscarriage, I was inspired to create a photo collage that spoke to the tension of being able to sit in the hard time and process pain, while still being able to see and celebrate the good in your life. I then became involved again the past two Easters after starting up Gulp Images, my photography business.” In 2020, Katie is the exhibition project manager which she sees as an extension of her story-telling through art. “After participating back in 2013 I found myself wondering if I had more stories to tell and how I might use my voice. I later developed a great passion for documentary photography and love telling meaningful stories by capturing personalities and relationships that will be treasured for generations.” For Katie, the personal spiritual journey is also significant. “Going through the creative process forces me to think deeper. The busyness of life is real and I have never been particularly good at setting aside time to reflect as life goes by. However, when I engage creatively it comes naturally and I find that these are the times I feel more in tune spiritually.” Over the years, Creative Communities, Lotteries Community and Howick Local Board have thrown their support in behind the event. ■■ Artists can express interest in exhibiting in 2020 through email stations.cession@gmail.com A full artist’s brief will be provided on request. The Exhibition takes place across the Easter weekend April 10-12.

What’s going on with Howick Local Board From this week we kick off a new Let’s Talk Local column that will keep you updated with what is happening in the Howick Ward. Playground news: The renewal of Raphoe Playground in Flat Bush has been completed. This includes the extension and installation of new playground equipment and fitness stations, new seats, and a picnic table. Preparing for the winter sports season. Late last year, the local board prioritised the renewal of William Green Sports Park. This project has now been completed in time for increased use over the winter. All fencing mesh has been fixed and repaired, height extensions are complete, impact curtains have been installed and the gates have been replaced. Howick’s second “Movies in Parks” event for 2020 is on Saturday March 14. The whole family can enjoy a free showing of ‘Aladdin’ in Lloyd Elsmore Park, sponsored by Howick Local Board. Fun and pre-movie entertainment commences from 5.40pm and the movie will start at sunset. Bring a picnic, or purchase food from one of the food stalls. Howick Local Board is delivering for our community: They have created between 10 and 15 kilometres of the walking and cycling network in the Highbrook and Burswood areas and five pedestrian bridges along Cascades Walkway have recently been renewed.

Let’s talk local with Adele White Did you know you can walk or cycle from Meadowlands all the way to Burswood on this great shared pathway? In the forthcoming financial year, the local board will continue, amongst many other projects, to implement the Howick Village Centre Plan, the Walking and Cycling Network Plan and will investigate community safety initiatives. Your feedback is required. You can help the Howick Local Board develop their next Howick Local Board Plan. Over the next few weeks, local board members and council staff will be out and about at meetings and events, asking locals what is important to them in their community. They will welcome your views on how they are tracking and whether they are moving in the right direction. The commitment of the teachers is huge, she says. “There is no one sitting in the staff room unlike big schools and during lunch time we have so many clubs including the kappa haka, card club, Stem group. ervous on her first day at school, Tracy Leader anxiously announced, ‘Please don’t just stare at me but come and shake my hand.” The next thing she knew was every child in the school hall was shaking her hand and happily introducing themselves to the new principal of Anchorage Park School. Now the newly anointed principal’s goal is to get to know every child’s name. And from the looks of it she is doing pretty well. Meeting up with the little ones of Anchorage Park Kindergarten that are on their weekly visit to the primary school as part of an orientation programme, Leader knows each child by name. “The transition of the kids is seamless as they come and spend some time with us once a week. Their school life doesn’t start at five years of age but from early childhood,” she says. A former deputy principal of Pigeon Mountain School, Leader says that the transition from a big primary school to a more intimate one is something she is very proud of. “When you walk around the school you realise how special it is. This small country school in the city that is tucked away in this pocket is so safe and secure. It has amazing facilities. The play area, the school

VILLAGE

Experience shopping, arts and entertainment in quaint surroundings

Are you ready for an automotive sensory experience? For those of you who enjoy hot rods, retro caravans and rock n’ roll, it’s time to get your vintage out and join the summer party at the Howick Village HOP on Saturday, March 7 from 9-2pm. Apart from the fun, games, spot prizes and entertainment at Picton Street, Howick, there will be a special treat for retro styled rod enthusiasts. Get ready for an automotive sensory experience with Southside Streeters set to display around 15 classic American cars at the event. The community based hot rodders will line up a spectacular display of traditional street rods, custom and muscle cars, as well as a classic airstream caravan. The American beauties on display will include a ‘41 Ford Pickup truck, ’28 Model A and ’35 Ford roadsters, a Willy’s pickup, ’32 and ’39 Ford coupes, a Model A 2

door sedan, a ’56 Chev and a Ford Thunderbird to name a few. Hot rodding is more of a culture, as well as a description of a vehicle type, and the definition varies from owner to owner. The most popular definition of a hot rod would be “a modified vehicle of American origin, originally manufactured prior to 1949”. Steve Keys, who has been a member of Southside Streeters for over 40 years, says that the club is a hobby group of hot rodders and classic car enthusiasts. It is a community-based, family-oriented club that meets once a month at the club rooms behind the Howick Leisure Centre in Pakuranga. At these meetings, the members discuss their common interest and passion for the vehicles and

the hobby, and offer support and advice to those members who are currently building or restoring their cars. The club has a steady membership number of 50, with second generation family members now also enthusiastic hot rodders and full members of Southside Streeters. “Our club is supporting the Howick Business Association and will be displaying around 15 hot rods and classic cars at the Howick Village HOP event,” says Keys, who is proud of the fact that Southside Streeters assist the local community in any way it can. A recent example is a car show, put on by the club at the Howick Leisure Centre, which benefited St John with $5000 being donated to the charity.

An endless summer We have been blessed with an outstanding summer. Perhaps the gardeners in us and the local landscapers are probably cursing the succession of hot dry days, the rest of us have been able to bask in this tremendous weather. What better way of enjoying these fine days than cruising the bars and cafes of Howick Village. Nothing beats sitting outside, dining al fresco or just enjoying the taste of a fine NZ wine or a boutique beer and taking in the ambience of Howick Village. We have a range of small friendly bars dispersed along Picton Street, nicely punctuated with a variety of cafes, bound to satisfy the most critical of palettes. Most of these have outside seating so you can enjoy the weather while watching the residents of Howick go about their daily business. This scene will be further enhanced this coming Saturday, March 7 with the Howick Hop coming to the Village. Already we have more than a 100 entries that will be lining up their gorgeous classic cars and classic caravans all along Picton Street. The main road will be closed for most of the day to give spectators a chance to mingle with these dedicated owners and their pride and joy. This will be a tremendous occasion for all the family to enjoy while Dad ogles the classic cars and dreams of future ownership Mum can leave the children with him and go about her shopping unimpeded. We look forward to joining you on Picton Street, Howick Village this Saturday. Cheers, Ken Scott, Chair. HVA.Inc

Stag and Doe – NZ premiere

best friend, Dee, who just so happens to be his ex that he left standing at the altar some years previously. The cast is made up of solid performers whose range extends to cross the comedy/drama divide. Tony Rahme who plays an embattled caterer, is a genuine scene-stealer with his comedic zeal. Gentle comedy goes hand-inglove with some touching moments, as the traditions of small town Canada collide with issues such as solo parenting, financial worries, and dealing with past heartbreak. Stag & Doe has a light-hearted, genuine feel that doesn’t impose itself on the audience-nor take itself too seriously, making it the perfect accompaniment to a night out on the eastside. KNOCK DOWN & REBUILD

Mayor Goff is concerned about racism directed at Chinese people and so he should be when one considers the many thousands of dollars he has received in campaign funds from Chinese people. However this is not one way traffic. We have been abused by an amateur Chinese developer who has told me to “have sex and travel” amongst other things as well as telling us this is not our country. Fortunately this is only one person and most but not all of the Chinese I have encountered have been polite and considerate.

Rentals increase poverty When will the government put a cap on landlords, keen to make money at tenants’ expense? People’s wages aren’t increasing at the same rate as rentals. Neither are interest or mortgage rates. Yet there seems to be boundless parameters for the “legal limits” landlords are able to relax into. There’s no hope for renters trying to save or just pay the bills if landlords aren’t hedged by legal limitations. My rent increased twice in the last year to the value of $70 a week. My neighbours rent increased by $40 a week. Others I know increased by $50. I managed to have mine reduced by $20 a week after a running email battle. My neighbours asked if they could have just $10 off their increase so they’d be able to stay but to no avail. They and their little family decided to move to something smaller they could afford but the kids had to change schools. How do landlords think, and how does the government think ordinary people are able to sustain these ongoing, uncapped increases? Where’s the humanity? There has to be an answer to renters who can’t afford to buy but can’t afford to rent!

On a sultry night at the end of summer, I went along to my first experience of a production at Howick Little Theatre. In a New Zealand premiere, Stag and Doe showcases the Canadian tradition of partners holding a fundraiser to set themselves up financially for the start their married lives. A couple named Bonnie and Brad have a Stag and Doe planned, but run into issues with a married couple named Mandy and Rob who are at a loose end for a venue after their wedding reception tent blows down. They agree to share the local hall, but both couples are at each other’s throats, the catering staff are in jail, and the reception subsequently is in disarray. Nasty ‘Bridezilla’ Mandy, (played by the impressive Courtney Louise) is on the warpath after a few too many wines, and the fact her fiancé Rob has shifted his focus to Bonnie’s

My name is Karen Purdie and I am a former police officer, teacher and am currently a physiotherapist. I have lived in Howick for 50 years, with the last 20 years residing in Willoughby Avenue, Howick. It is my understanding that the apartment block developer has recently also bought 3 Willoughby Ave and is holding a bid that has been accepted for 5 Willoughby Avenue with the auction being brought forward to Wednesday, February 26. Therefore there is potential that the new development will go across three sites. ■■ The problems are as follows: Howick Primary and Intermediate schools - students cross at this point which leads into an alleyway or short cut from Willoughby Ave into Dell Way and onto Hutchinson’s Road in Howick. This apartment block is across this intersection and this is unmanned. Parked cars and potential cars backing out of the apartment could potentially cause a fatality or serious injury. I have seen a number of close calls due to reversing cars at the end of the street.

The cause of the accident was a road sign on the island in the middle of the intersection says Neil Armstrong whose BMW is a complete write off. Photo supplied

Cause of the accident was an offending sign In a car accident on Thursday February 13, at the intersection of Laings Road and Bucklands Beach Road, I was involved in a collision with a 4-wheel drive utility when I attempted to cross the road to head home following my regular swim. After checking that the road was clear I pulled out to cross Bucklands Beach Road, and was astounded to hear a screeching of brakes coming from my right, and had no chance of my BMW avoiding the oncoming vehicle. The result was my car was so badly damaged it was written off. The cause of the accident was an offending sign on the island in the middle of the intersection. For vehicles coming to the beach, the sign is at ground level and shows two arrows, for going left to the beach, or straight ahead along Bucklands Beach Road. Heading home, and waiting to cross the road from Laings Road, the view from my BMW saloon, which is a fairly low to the ground vehicle, was completely blocked, as many people have experienced since the junction was modified a few months ago. The original sign was on a pole about two metres high, and was not a problem. The replacement sign however was a different story. Vehicles coming along the main road were obscured from view when they were behind the sign, and in addition, the colour of the back of the sign is dark grey, as are the merging roads, and they just blend together. The increased congestion and parking problems - traffic is already on both sides and is now already congested. As the current development only allows for six cars, there will be at least 11 extra cars on the road, and the average apartment will probably have two cars, so this may mean an extra 25 cars with nowhere to go. This will block the road particularly between 8am-9am and 2.45-3.15pm in the afternoon. It will replace a 2-storey home, there is little green space and 17 apartments on a site is just not in keeping with the local area. With little green space and few trees this will contribute greatly to climate change which we are trying to stop. Potentially with a further 2 sections to be developed this would lead to potentially

Even a vehicle as large as a utility momentarily disappears from view completely. My insurer, the AA, had no hesitation in accepting the claim, it was paid out within 36 hours. That was the good news. The bad news was that I suffered from shock, and banged my head and shoulder that became very stiff over the next few days. I was unable to swim, and in addition, I was without a vehicle, and resented the loss of my BMW, which I cherished, because of a signpost! I had to hire a car and spend the whole weekend looking for a new one. I was annoyed because the road signs are there to ‘help prevent’ accidents, when this ridiculous lowly placed sign obscured my view, momentarily admitted, but enough to write my car off. No sign should do that. I cannot understand how the council could place a sign that obscures the driver’s view. The one saving grace was the beamer had a high safety factor, and even the tow yard manager was surprised at the level of damage, saying it had to be a 4-wheel drive as no normal car could inflict damage like that to a beamer. I have been to the council about the sign, which is now being attended to, and also the fact I suffered injury, trauma, believing for one short moment that my time was up!

another 34 apartments and exacerbate congestion problems even more. Howick is not accessible to rail and most people do not catch buses but instead use their cars. This is out of keeping with the whole street given that it is a road which contains a school and another two schools — Howick Intermediate and Pakuranga College are within 500m of it. Some of the apartments are only 36m square which is not conducive to any person or family living in them. Banks will not even lend to 40m square apartments or less. Please listen to your local community. Howick will lose its unique heritage if these developments are allowed to continue.

Salvos housing project in Flat Bush close to completion By FARIDA MASTER

A

recent Salvation Army Housing report warns that the 7168 house surplus won’t solve the housing crisis. The annual State of the Nation report said that the housing shortage is caused by unaffordable housing and low income levels. Ameet Londhe, officer of the Salvation Army Flat Bush Corps Plant, says it is shocking to know that Auckland is changing in many ways. “Things that we considered as one of the reason for homelessness is not the same anymore. “We, the people living in the eastern suburbs of this beautiful city are no different to wider Auckland when it comes to the housing crisis. In fact, I would say the housing prices in east Auckland are considerably higher than most of the other suburbs in Auckland.” And that, he points out, is mainly due to unaffordable housing when you take wages into account. In an attempt to solve the housing crisis Salvation Army stepped up its efforts to address the growing problem by creating

a long term solution to build 40 units on land owned by its local corps in Flat Bush. The good news is that the new Salvation Army Social Housing (SASH) project at the corner of Chapel and Baverstock Roads in Flat Bush, funded by the Ministry of Social Development, is not far from completion. The plan is to finish the over $15 million social housing project and open up the dwellings

to house people by March 2021 says Ameet. Salvation Army Social Housing has traditionally offered longer-term, low-rental options for those over 55. However, this has been expanded in the past few years and provides good quality housing for singles, couples, families and the elderly. The tenants pay income-related rent through the Ministry of Social Development. Most of the dwellings in the new development are one and two bedroom units. “These are more suitable for people over 55 years, singles or couples with a small family or elderly people. We are hoping to provide a way for the people who are falling through gaps, struggling to find a safe, suitable and affordable place to live in this beautiful community of Flat Bush,” says Ameet. ■■ Those that fit the criteria and are looking for safe and affordable accommodation in Flat Bush can contact Ameet via email ameet.londhe@salvationarmy. org.nz ■■ People looking to apply for the Salvation Army Socials Housing need to be registered with State Housing.

Rotary Fun Walk and Run set to go D

ust off your running shoes and break out the – possibly green – active wear because the Howick Rotary Fun Walk and Run is back for another year! It started with only a couple of hundred people in 2005— and with 2019 being a record year in terms of participation— this year more than 700 people are expected to take to the streets on Sunday March 15. Howick Rotary organising committee member Colin Monk says the event is a great way to get the whole family involved in keeping fit and healthy. There will be three routes on offer. The tracks cater to all levels of fitness – walkers or runners can choose from a 5.9km primary course, a 6.9km intermediate course, or an 8.1km extended course, with five water stations available on the way.

More than 700 people are expected to take to the streets on Sunday March 15 – St Patrick’s Day - across the three routes on offer. Times photo Wayne Martin

Rotarian Monk says the event creates a friendly rivalry between local primary and intermediate schools that compete to be crowned the winning school — and this year, with more schools entered than ever, that competition is sure to

increase. With spot prizes on offer (the best selection ever, says Mr Monk) and a delicious sausage sizzle on completion, there’ll be no shortage of motivation to finish. Each participating child will also receive a medal at the

The government’s social housing strategy

i

MP for Pakuranga

Simeon Brown The apparent strategy adopted by this government to buy up homes off the open market in order to compensate for its lack of follow through on KiwiBuild is only going to make things worse in the housing market, not better. The disclosure last year that Housing New Zealand, now known as Kainga Ora, had purchased five homes on Nelson Street for nearly $1 million each shined a light on what this government has turned to following the failure of their flagship housing policy. The issue with this is that buying homes off the open market to inflate our state housing portfolio is only adding to the problem, since it’s not actually increasing the country’s housing stock. It means the government is competing with first home buyers, who have worked hard and saved for years in order to get their foot in the door only to lose out to the large state-funded pockets of Kainga Ora. It’s also a poor use of taxpayer money, particularly in the case of Nelson Street. For what the government paid, it could have built twice as many homes itself and housed twice as many families in need. The government says it is trying to accomplish two main goals when it comes to housing – increasing the stock of affordable homes in New Zealand, particularly in Auckland, and ensuring there are enough so that everyone has a sheltered place to sleep at night. But this strategy ensures their failure at both of those objectives. It does not add to the housing stock, and it is not helping those most in need. Rather than buying million-dollar state homes off the open market the government should follow through on the promises it made. While I fundamentally disagree with KiwiBuild, building new homes is what’s required right now. If elected into government later this year, National will scrap the Resource Management Act and replace it with something that actually makes sense. The biggest impediment to the construction of affordable homes at present is the exorbitant costs placed upon developers and builders through the consents process, so we will simplify things to make it easier to build what’s needed. I am hosting a public meeting on social housing with National’s Spokesperson on the subject Simon O’Connor, on Tuesday 24 March at the Howick Bowling Club, 33 Selwyn Street, Howick, at 7:00pm. Please come along if you’re interested in hearing more about this issue. ■■ Simeon Brown, Member of Parliament for Pakuranga

finish line. All courses start and finish at Stockade Hill, so participants can soak up some post-run (and walk) views. Sponsors this year include My Ride, Mitre 10 Mega Botany, Dilmah

Tea, Howick Local Board, The Athlete’s Foot and many others. Mr Monk also acknowledged the support provided by the Howick Local Board, as part of their keep healthy initiatives. The board provide funds to assist in the running costs. All proceeds go to the Howick Coastguard, and the Rotary Club of Howick covers all the costs associated with running the event. Last year The Rotary Club of Howick donated $9000 to Coastguard. The more participants, the greater the amount raised for Coastguard. ■■ The Howick Fun Walk and Run will be held at Stockade Hill on Sunday March 15 at 9am. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $5 for children and $10 for school teams of four, and registration can either be done at http://howickfunwalkrun.co.nz/ or by entering on the day.

It’s a record folks – Brit & Euro Classic Car Show a big hit

www.times.co.nz

A

record number of people turned out for the Auckland Brit & Euro Classic Car at Lloyd Elsmore Park on Sunday. The weather was kind too – although there was cloud cover it was extremely warm with some respite in the afternoon when the wind picked up. Rev Dr Richard Waugh, chairman of the Brit & Euro Classic Car Show Committee, said: Our fifth annual classic car show was a resounding success with the most car and motorcycle registrations we’ve had (1140) and a record public attendance of more than 10,000 people. “The free community event is only possible due to much voluntary effort and the sponsorship of Howick Local Board, Protecta Insurance and Times Newspapers. “We are already underway with our evaluation work to ensure the 2021 event is just as memorable for east Auckland.”

Do you want to build a better business?

ADVERTORIAL JH15844

If someone says to you that he or she is a Chartered Accountant, the first thing you think of is `oh, they do tax returns and deal with the Inland Revenue’. That was true in the past and continues to be today, to a certain extent, but that is gradually changing. Software like Xero is completing more and more of the processing work that Chartered Accountants did 25 years ago, so as a profession we are looking at new ways to better assist the businesses we work with. At DNA we have adopted a variety of technology that didn’t exist five to ten years ago such as Xero, Hubdoc, Spotlight Reporting, HelloSign and various payroll systems. This automation is providing us and the businesses we work with the opportunity to spend more time talking about their business, what they want to achieve and where they are going not only in their business but in their personal lives as well. People get into business because they have a vision, and most often because they are an expert at what they do. Unfortunately, that expertise doesn’t always translate into making them an expert at running the business they have created. It’s hard taking time out of

working in your business to work on it. But doing this is essential for its success and achieving the vision of the founder. There is no magical overnight solution to building a successful business. It is about taking small steps every day to get a bit better than the day before, which will ultimately have a massive effect on your success. So, what should you do to build yourself a more successful business? We have broken it down into ten essential steps: 1 Get clear on exactly what it is that you want. 2. Be open to change and new learning. 3. Define where you are now (warts and all).

4. 5.

Make a plan. Get your organisation structure right. 6. Be a better leader. 7. Be held accountable by someone independent. 8. Build strong networks. 9. Monitor your progress. 10. Keep your well of happiness full. If you want to find out more about building a better business then contact the team at Drumm Nevatt & Associates Limited to discuss or join us for our seminar on 19 March by registering at www.dnaca.co.nz. Drumm Nevatt & Associates Limited, Chartered Accountants 69 Ridge Road, Howick. Phone 534 4382.

n 1864, aged 19-years-old, Albert Gerring joined the flood of emigrants leaving the overcrowded, shabby squalor of London with its thick, choking smog which hung over the city for months, for the clean air of Auckland, New Zealand. He soon found work on a schooner bringing cattle from Northland to Kohimarama where they were marshalled for the Auckland markets. Like many others, he tried his luck in the Thames goldfields and then found a more secure teaching position available once he had passed his Certificate of Competency in 1887 — it was a good occupation. In 1909, aged 64 years, he was appointed the Town Clerk of the Howick Road Board. In June 1914 his salary was increased to $16 a year which was subsequently increased to $28 per year as his responsibilities increased as secretary, treasurer, collector of rates and fees such as dog licenses, motor car licenses and fees for using the Howick wharf. He collected funds for relief of Belgium and Serbia in World War I. When the Howick Town Board

was established in 1922, he was appointed Town Clerk with an annual salary of $104. From 1910 to 1920 he was the secretary and treasurer of the Howick Bowling and Croquet Club as well as being President from 1922 to 1926. The bowling and croquet greens were where the Howick Library is now placed which can be viewed from the pathway from Uxbridge to Selwyn Road today.

In February 1927 Albert’s house in Uxbridge Road, opposite today’s library, was destroyed by fire. Unfortunately, nine months after moving into the hotel, this large building caught fire. A lady guest left an electric iron on, not realising that now electricity had arrived in Howick in 1927 you had to turn the electricity off when you have completed your ironing. He then left Howick to stay with his daughter at Ngaruawahia. The hotel was rebuilt using bricks to prevent another fire in 1930. Aged 83 years in 1928 he decided to retire from the Howick Town Board as Howick Town Clerk, one of New Zealand’s longest-serving local body town clerks. He was also superintendent of All Saints Sunday School. Albert Gerring died at Ngaruawahia aged 87 years and his wife Ellen Charlotte Gerring died in 1911 and was buried in All Saints Anglican Churchyard in Howick. He was one of Howick’s notable citizens who served our community well. Alan La Roche, Howick Historian

he beeping and buzzing of technology, noisy traffic, the incessant shouting of social media – it never shuts up. Caught in this constant babble, how do we find stillness? This is the starting point for Massive Company’s newest devised work Babble, written by the cast of 20 in collaboration with Carla Martell, Scotty Cotter and Rosie Langabeer. The Babble journey began last year when Massive Company reached out to five South Auckland schools to find their ensemble. Twenty rangatahi (youth) were selected from Ormiston Senior College, as well as students from other colleges along with three members of Massive Nui Ensemble—the company’s training programme for emerging artists. Babble brings dynamic physicality, inventive imagery, a multi-layered musical soundscape and a formidable cast of young South Auckland voices to the Mangere Arts Centre stage from March 18-28 as part of Auckland Arts Festival. Drawing on their own unique experiences and stories, the young performers will lift the lid on navigating the incessant noise of the world they live in—to find stillness, amongst the wall of noise caused by traffic, electronics,

sirens, fireworks, technology and the constant bombardment of political rhetoric. “It’s all about the constant stimulation, growing up in a world in which it often seems as if you have to be loud to be heard,” says Cotter. The cast represents a truly diverse Auckland, with performers’ ethnicities being represented from the Maori, Samoan, Chinese, Filipino, Korean, Tongan, Japanese, South Africa, Cook Island and Pakeha communities. Assistant director, Ebony Andrew says, “The great thing about working with this cast is their dedication. Not many

young people would give up their summer holiday or balance a part time job with full time rehearsals or take four forms of public transport in the morning to get to rehearsal.” The cast of 20 performers started the process of making Babble with their own personal stories and backgrounds. Themes such as exposure, globalised communities, pressures of technology and juggling the stresses of school and home life are some of the rich tapestry of experiences that contribute to the work. Ormiston College student Amanda says, “It feels amazing! Not only

Touch refs churned out ➤➤From Page 20 Six of those that have come via this season’s development program, and they have 11 referee’s that have represented PC touch, Counties and NZ in overseas events and World cups. Age is no barrier to getting involved as young Kurt Harrison showed. Kurt was one of our first young men to join the development program. Kurt started refereeing age just 14 and in his first year went from refereeing U12 games to controlling the A Grade final. Kurt has progressed through the programme to becoming PC Touch’s only Level 4 black badge the highest rank in NZ and the world. Kurt went on to represent PC touch at the Youth World Cup in Malaysia in the 2018 season. This season, a young 11-year-old referee has taken up refereeing, and will hope to emulate Kurt. Carl Llewelyn is proud of his charges and says, “The rewards you get watching these kids grow in confidence and skill set during the season makes this programme well worthwhile. “We have had many parents comment during the season that they have seen such a massive difference in their son or daughter as result of refereeing and that just makes the programme even more successful on many scales not just as a referee.” ■■ To get involved, contact PCT via their website www.sporty.co.nz/ coasttouch/

n the media this week was the report rugby league star Kayln Ponga is looking to be the next top athlete to make the code switch to union from league, in order to wear the All Black jersey. Australian born, but eligible for New Zealand via his Maori heritage, Ponga is off-contract with the Newcastle Knights this November. The Knights are clamouring to retain his signature and are believed to have offering a fouryear contract upgrade worth a whopping $4.5 million. The contract also comes with a ‘player option’ for 2023, effectively a get-out clause freeing up Ponga to chase his All Black’s dream (just in time for the World Cup in France). This comes on the heels of remarks from Ardie Savea concerning a switch to the ‘foreign’ code. Whether he was serious about his ambitions or the comment was made to liven up the Ice project podcast he was appearing on (although he re-affirmed his stance on another show the following day), it got people talking.

OPINION

Rugby league star Kayln Ponga is looking to switch codes.

He also won no fans in the City Of Sails league community, effectively waving the middle-finger by suggesting he would shun perennial strugglers the New Zealand Warriors by announcing he would “go to a team that’s good...that’s dominating, like the Storm or the Roosters”. Boomers, and those old-atheart, decried the mere possibility of it happening on that great vehicle of the everyman-talkback radio, and muttered comments about Sonny Bill Williams (the guy can’t catch a break) and his code-hopping antics that infuriated the old school and their antiquated views on professionalism.

The reality is talented young athletes now have options to experiment with other sports, thanks to contract flexibility from clubs desperate to retain them long term. They can also simply take a break from the sport as highlighted by recent rugby sabbaticals. Much to the annoyance of purists, this trend shows no sign of stopping-nor should it. Sportspeople with the ability, and more importantly the will, to challenge themselves further by taking up a new sport should be encouraged. The majority of the apathetic public would probably raise only an inquisitive eyebrow should

someone they know make a transition from a mechanic to a panel beater, so why is it such an issue when a sportsperson wants to spread their wings? Conversely, Solomone Kata an ex Howick Hornets player - is a great example of a player who had to adapt or die. After a series of so-so seasons, he was released by the Warriors, followed by a repeat dose at the Storm. With his career in nosedive he has returned to his roots in union with the Brumbies. A schoolboy union star at Sacred Heart College, the Tongan powerhouse exercised his options and is now flourishing in his return to union with the Brumbies, starring in the early rounds including last Friday against the Chiefs, with a well taken try and several solid carries.

Pohutakawa Coast Touch (PCT) based in Beachlands has a proud and enviable record of producing top class touch referees, many of who have gone on to referee at the national level. The club is considered the largest module in New Zealand, with a staggering (approximate) 1200 players registered. Its referee development squad was created 12 years ago by Eddie Van Den Dop who wanted to create a team of referees to assist in the module. Back in his day there were just a handful of volunteers that put their hand up to referee and at the time there were no support mechanisms by Counties or NZ Touch nor pathways or qualifications they just turned up and ran. Carl Llewelyn took over the role 8+ years ago and started a long-term plan to create a team of elite referees. To date, 66 referees (sourced mainly from player ranks) have been put through the development programme, and currently they boast 37 referees within the youth development and elite programmes. In addition, 24 referees are either still in the National programme or have represented Counties and NZ at nationals. ➤➤Turn to Page 19

Improved Blues face mighty Hurricanes H

aving deservedly overcome the previously unbeaten Stormers 33-10 in Cape Town, the Blues face an even sterner test of their Super Rugby talent against the Hurricanes in Wellington on Saturday. That latest win, following their triumph against the Bulls in Pretoria, can be attributed to the return of Otere Black to first-five and the success of converting Steven Perofeta to fullback where they have contributed to a far more cohesive backline. Black is not a fancy attacker, but he has an astute rugby brain and an accurate kick which succeeded with four penalties and converted all three of the Blues tries scored by Joe Marchant (2) and Dalton Papalii. Given more space at fullback where his sidestep and slick pass bring rich reward, Perofeta has adjusted nicely to his new position. Throw in Rieko Ioane, Mark Telea and Englishman Marchant and it’s a backline possessed of pace and penetration. However with powerful Ngani Laumape and Vince Aso combining brilliantly in the centres during the Hurricanes 62-15

thrashing of the Sunwolves, the Blues defence will need to be excellent in Wellington next Saturday. Add to them inspirational halfback TJ Perenara, slippery fullback Chase Tiatia and big wingers Kobus van Wyk and Ben Lam and they have awesome strike power. In scoring three tries against the Sunwolves, determined South African van Wyk showed off a smart sidestep and fend. Their forwards have also exceeded expectations. But they can expect the Blues pack to offer far sterner opposition than the Sunwolves were capable of. Meanwhile it was good to see Joseph Parker score a fifth round technical knockout win over Shawndell Winters in Frisco,

Texas, after he had been inactive for the best part of a year. That is too long in a sport which demands frequent action to prevent ring rust and loss of fitness and timing of punches. However Parker got it right when an excellent four-punch combination nearly put Winters through the ropes in the fifth after a crunching right floored the American in the third. Unfortunately in his eagerness to demonstrate his punching power, Parker failed to box as well as he can against a wily opponent who was no patsie. Consequently he got caught in too many clinches against a 39-year-old former cruiserweight who conceded considerable weight.

Parker is not an in-fighter and is at his best when he uses his excellent left jab extensively. Nor is he a one-punch knockout artist like David Tua was with his lethal left hook. However he does have fast reflexes and is capable of putting opponents away with his combinations, as he did in the fifth against Winters. That performance won’t scare Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury who need to unify the world heavyweight championship by fighting in a winner-take-all bout. Meanwhile I ended up with egg on my face last week when reporting on Tyson’s win against Wilder, I wrote Fury’s corner threw in the towel when in fact it was Wilder’s. Be assured I am having my senility checked and have asked my proof reader to see an optician. That will have to wait until former WBC king Deontay Wilder exercises his right to have a third crack at Fury. ■■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer

TEACHING STYLE:

Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”
