Any zoologist will tell you that Crown Meadows in Stone are full of wildlife, even though much of it may be small and secretive.

But which of us could have guessed that it was once, for one peaceful fine day only, home to acollection of wild and exotic beasts?

Aston-by-Stone WI held its June meeting outdoors, and once again the weather was kind to us. We went on safari and notched up sightings of tiger, lion, hippopotamus, rhino, monkey –and cow, bull and penguin.

President Chris Payne had organised awalk round the Meadows, and to enliven the meeting, had placed toy animals for the members to spot. We had binoculars at the ready –and aloupe to examine the tiny beasts, once found.

Alovely walk enlivened by cries of: “There’s amonkey!” or:“I’ve spotted arhino”was followed by Covid-rules refreshments in disposable cups, and aquiz to keep the brain exercised. Members who preferred not to walk indulged in gentle ‘chair exercise’ and a chance to chat and catch up with old friends.

Next month members are being treated to agarden party at thehomeofone of the committee. We have kept in touch throughout the pandemic and are now enjoying the face-to-face meetings which are allowed.

This June get-together was our second outdoor meeting, but we hope to return to Aston-by-Stone Village Hall when it is safe to do so. In normal times we meetonthe second Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm, and are always pleasedtowelcome visitors and new members.
