The geological processes that make Mull and Iona's landscapes hold fascination for Earth Scientists from around the World. The youngest and the oldest rocks in the British Isles can be found in these islands, spanning a geological history of around 3 billion years. 90% of Mull's landscape consists of stepped plateaux, made up of successive lava flows, dating back a mere 60 million years. This landscape was previously two or three times higher than it is today, but weathering and glacial erosion in the last 50 million years has sculpted this environment into what we see now.

It has meant much cheaper ferries between the Isle of Mull and the mainland. As expected, this has brought an increase in the numbers of people wishing to visit the island by vehicle. Previously the minimum vehicle length was 5 metres and now it is 6 metres before additional charges; motorhomes will particularly benefit. All good news, but as in any change, problems have to be anticipated. Make sure that you book your Oban to Craignure ferry crossing well in advance, although the other routes to Mull via Tobermory and Fishnish cannot be booked in advance. For the summer timetable, there will be two ferries running more frequently between Oban and Craignure. Make Mull an affordable holiday destination in the Scottish Highlands.

Much of the meat sold in the restaurants on Mull is produced by local farmers around the island, many of which sell direct to the public through local shops and Producer’s Markets. Most of the seafood to be found on the menu is caught daily in surrounding waters and delivered fresh to your table. It is also sold at the Producer’s Markets and other local outlets.
