The waters around Mull and Iona are rich with marine life one of which is the Basking Shark is the second largest fish in the world, they are mostly seen June to September following plankton blooms. Minke whale appear during the months of April & May then stay long into the autumn months as the seas are at their warmest. Common dolphing are seen are seen fro the boats in larger pods feeding and passing through hebridean waters, where as bottlenose dolphins are seen from land and see playing and feeding in local waters.

The Isle of Iona is home to a very rare migratory bird. The Corncrake is a skulking land rail that is more often heard than seen. Males arriving from their wintering quarters in South-east Africa in late April rasp their characteristic ‘crek-crek’ call to attract a mate. Male Corncrakes call throughout the day and night and each bird will rasp up to 1,000,000 times during a single breeding season!

The geological processes that make Mull and Iona’s landscapes hold fascination for geology scientists 49 50 from around the World. The youngest and the oldest rocks in the British Isles can be found in these islands, spanning a geological history of around 3 billion years. 90% of Mull’s landscape consists of stepped plateaux, made up of successive lava flows, dating back a mere 60 million years. This landscape was previously two or three times higher than it is today, but weathering and glacial erosion in the last 50 million years has sculpted this environment into what we see now.

tobermory is the capital of the Isle of Mull in the Scottish Inner Hebrides. It is located in the northeastern part of the island, near the northern entrance of the Sound of Mull. With a current population of approx. 700, the town was built in 1788. The name Tobermory is derived from the Gaelic Tobar Mhoire, meaning “Mary’s Well”. The name refers to a well located nearby which was dedicated in ancient times to the Virgin Mary.
