Over the years it has captivated thousands of people including Queen Victoria, Robert Louis Stevenson and Jules Verne. The trip lasts approximately three hours and you can disembark at Fionnphort or Iona. We leave Iona and Fionnphort twice daily (1st April - 31st October) and we aim to give you at least 1 hour ashore. www.staffatrips.co.uk Tel: 01681 700755.

DID YOU KNOW? Tobermory is the capital of the Isle of Mull in the Scottish Inner Hebrides. It is located in the northeastern part of the island, near the northern entrance of the Sound of Mull. With a current population of approx. 700, the town was built in 1788. The name Tobermory is derived from the Gaelic Tobar Mhoire, meaning “Mary’s Well”. The name refers to a well located nearby which was dedicated in ancient times to the Virgin Mary. 7

DID YOU KNOW? The geological processes that make Mull and Iona’s landscapes hold fascination for geology scientists from around the World. The youngest and the oldest rocks in the British Isles can be found in these islands, spanning a geological history of around 3 billion years. 90% of Mull’s landscape consists of stepped plateaux, made up of successive lava flows, dating back a mere 60 million years. This landscape was previously two or three times higher than it is today, but weathering and glacial erosion in the last 50 million years has sculpted this environment into what we see now. 10

MOTORHOMES ON MULL: Motor homes are very welcome to the Isle of Mull but please take care as large numbers of motorhomes coming to Mull can create difficulties on our narrow roads and parking places. Drive as slowly as you wish, but please let traffic behind pass you by using available passing places. Please note that there is no such thing as “wild camping” in Scotland in a motorhome or campervan. The Scottish Outdoor Access Code specifically excludes motorised access. This means that if you are parking in an area out-with established campsites you do not have permission to stay there and you may be asked to leave by the landowner. Water and Waste facilities are available on campsites only so please make sure you have your site booked. A Guide for Campervans and Motorhomes on Mull is available at Explore Mull and Visitor Information Centres. 21

DID YOU KNOW? The Minke Whale is the true denizen of the deep in the waters around the Isle of Mull. These small whales, measuring up to 12 metres, have been the subject of study by Sealife Surveys, a company based in Tobermory, over the past 30 years. Both Common and Atlantic Grey Seals can be seen off the coast of Mull. To see Common Seals, try looking in Salen Bay or take a short boat trip from Tobermory across to Calve Island. Atlantic Grey Seals prefer more remote areas, like the Treshnish Isles which can be visited by boat from either Tobermory , Iona or Ulva Ferry.

DID YOU KNOW? Warm soils and humid conditions provide the right conditions for a wealth of fungi in Mull’s woodlands. Late Summer and Autumn are the best times to go on a fungi foray on the island. Aros Park, is a great place to visit to find a wide assortment of these colourful and fascinating organisms. Mull’s mild and damp climate also supports a luxuriant community of ferns, mosses & lichens. Just about every tree on the island is festooned with these plants and ancient organisms. Lichens are ecological barometers of a health environment, of clean air and low pollution. That so many are found on the Isle of Mull bears testimony to the good health of the island!
