The geological processes that make Mull and Iona’s landscapes hold fascination for geology scientists from around the World. The youngest and the oldest rocks in the British Isles can be found in these islands, spanning a geological history of around 3 billion years. 90% of Mull’s landscape consists of stepped plateaux, made up of successive lava flows, dating back a mere 60 million years. This landscape was previously two or three times higher than it is today, but weathering and glacial erosion in the last 50 million years has sculpted this environment into what we see now.

DID YOU KNOW? The Isle of Iona is home to a very rare migratory bird. The Corncrake is a skulking land rail that is more often heard than seen. Males arriving from their wintering quarters in South-east Africa in late April rasp their characteristic ‘crek-crek’ call to attract a mate. Male Corncrakes call throughout the day and night and each bird will rasp up to 1,000,000 times during a single breeding season!

Common dolphins are seen are seen from the boats in larger pods feeding and passing through hebridean waters, whereas bottlenose dolphins are seen from land and seen playing and feeding in local waters.
