In recent years, the White-tailed Eagle has become the unofficial emblem of the Isle of Mull. After nearly a century of being posted missing as a breeding bird on the island, these majestic raptors returned to nest in the early 1980’s. After many years of joint effort between various agencies and conservation bodies, the numbers of White-tailed Eagles on the Isle of Mull has increased to a level which saw 16 pairs nest in 2013. This success brings unquantified rewards to the island’s people and businesses, by encouraging wildlife enthusiasts to come to Mull and spend their money in local guest houses, shops and restaurants.

Did you know? The Isle of Iona is home to a very rare migratory bird which has been in historical decline throughout Britain in the past 150 years. The Corncrake is a skulking land rail that is much more often heard than seen. Males arriving from their wintering quarters in South-east Africa in late April rasp their characteristic ‘crek-crek’ call to attract a mate. Male Corncrakes call throughout the day and night and each bird will rasp up to 1,000,000 times during a single breeding season! The machair and crofting land on Iona have changed very little, compared to habitats that Corncrakes previously used on the mainland. This has allowed these birds to retain a foothold on Iona in the face of widespread decline. Despite this, the Iona population fell to a low of only three calling males in the early 1990’s, although the numbers of these iconic birds have since risen on the island. Corncrake numbers tend to fluctuate from year to year. One reason for this is that Corncrakes are notoriously shortlived, with few birds reaching three years of age.
