General formatting and layout changed- as prescribed by the government office. The SGM was attended by 44 out of the 65 general members and decided to approve the proposal tabled. The new provisions came into effect on July 21st, 2014.

PRIME MINISTER NOT TO SPARE ANYONE On August 13th, 2014, during the release of the Annual Report of National Vigilance Center (NVC), the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, warned that he will not shield any ministers involved in corruption. Mr. Koirala also urged bureaucrats to work for the betterment of the country and consider national interest and not work under pressure while carrying out their duties.

TI NEPAL PROTESTS PARLIAMENT DEVELOPMENT FUND TI Nepal sent a letter to the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Sushil Koirala and the Speaker of the Parliament Rt. Hon. Subhash Chandra Nemwang, protesting the haphazard allocation of the Parliament Development Fund. The letter highlighted any increase in the current allocation should be discouraged, and the fund should be used wisely to encourage projects for national development.

EXCHANGE OF KNOWLEDGE

As TI Nepal bid farewell to exchange fellow Haritha Dahanayaka from TI Sri Lanka, who assisted IT and media works, former colleague Nisha Aryal was welcomed back from TI Sri Lanka. Executive Director Ashish Thapa, Program Officer Shristi Karki, Office Assistant Sishor Dyola, along with Exchange Fellows Haritha Dahanayaka, Nisha Aryal, Jwala Bhatta and Md. Khursheed Alam, participated in an exchange program meeting hosted by Fredskorpset (FK) Norway in Bangkok on August 6th through 8th 2014.

In the meeting, the returning fellows shared their experiences, including lessons learnt and challenges faced, while the Chapters reflected on the outcomes of the exchange. New fellows underwent a course to equip themselves with knowledge relating to cross-cultural communication, health and safety, and working in a new environment. Fellows for 2014/15, Intern Jwala Bhatta from TI Nepal and Md. Khursheed Alam from TI Bangladesh, have now been inducted by TI Bangladesh and TI Nepal respectively.

A NEW PROJECT BUILDING NATIONAL INTEGRITY IN NEPAL On July 23rd, 2014, the President of TI Nepal signed an agreement with the Royal Norwegian Embassy for a new project titled “Building National Integrity in Nepal”. The project aims to work towards controlling corruption in the public sector in 9 districts and Kathmandu. The total budget of the project amounts to 3.5 million Norwegian Kroners. Key project intervention areas are: Advocacy, Study, Legal Advice, Conference, Programs at district level, Knowledge Exchange, Development Pact, Integrity Pact, Advertising and Codes.

TWENTY ONE DEVELOPMENT PACTS TI Nepal’s program, Advocacy and Legal Advice Center and Development Pact (ALACDP), has so far facilitated 21 Development Pacts with government institutions at the local level. The Development Pacts engage public service providers to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with TI Nepal affiliated NGO to increase the efficiency and responsiveness of service deliveries. Development Pacts are currently being implemented in nine districts where affiliated organizations are working with the distict based government offices and local bodies. Recently, the Chief Secretary of the Government of Nepal, Lila Mani Poudel, lend his supportby being present in the Development Pact signing ceremony held on June 20th, 2014 in Gulmi district.

MID-TERM REVIEW-ALACDP The ALACDP project’s review meeting was held by TI Nepal at Nagarkot from June 11th through the 13th, 2014. Representatives from twelve districts where ALACDP is currently taking place, as well as delegates from two districts, where the program may be implemented in future, were present at the meeting. Each of the district partners shared their experiences, suggestions and future expectations, along with feedback from TI Nepal office bearers. Ekaterina Yakovleva, the Public Finance Management Attaché from the European Union, the project’s donor, also actively participated in the meeting. An independent review has recently been commissioned by the Management Association of Nepal (MAN) to further assess the mid-term impact of the project.

RIGHT TO INFORMATION REQUEST On July 12th, 2014, Ms. Sharada Bhusal Jha, a prominent activist, filed a Right to Information (RTI) request inquiring about TI Nepal's plans, program and expenses. TI Nepal provided her with a complete set of documents, comprising of its annual progress reports, financial reports, constitution, code of conduct, research reports, etcetera, and wished her success in promoting RTI for greater transparency.

19TH ANNIVERSARY

NEW EXCHANGE FELLOW Mr. Khurshed Alam from TI Bangladesh Md. Khurshed Alam has been working as a staff member of Transparency International Bangladesh for last three year. He has post-graduated in Anthropology and Development Studies. His major area expertise is social research. He conducted several Citizen Report Card surveys on Health, Education and Local Government Institutions. Beside this, he has vivid experience of working with civil society representatives and youth volunteers. At present, under Fredskorpset Norway fellowship, he is working with Transparency International Nepal and he will be here for next one year.

INTERNS Three students, Samrat Narasingha Rayamajhi, Suvekchya Pudasaini and Katherine Carwile, joined TI Nepal as interns during June 2014. The interns are pursuing, or have recently completed, education in a variety of fields, including Business Administration, and International Relations. Samrat was involved with the Finance department, and completed his internship on July 24th, 2014, while the other two will continue their internships until September.

TI NEPAL’S DOCUMENTARY TI Nepal recently produced a 10 minutes documentary highlighting its work towards achieving its mission, vision and core values. The documentary presents a contextual analysis of the country and highlights the role that TI Nepal has played, especially in advocacy, networking, education and the promotion of values.

AGM The 19th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of TI Nepal will be held on September 26th, 2014. Elections of a new President and eight other Board members will be the main agenda of the meeting.
