I Have Wings FEATURED ARTIST We invited Romina to be our featured artist for our second issue and to talk about her sewing creations and custom dolls! She accepted our challenge and was kind enough to show and tell us about her little romantic world, taking us to her studio and showing sketches she makes for future dolls and outfits.

|

62

This is one of Romina’s custom blythe dolls done for Junie Moon.

|

TINY FEET: Hi Romina!* Thank you for accepting the challenge and contribute as a featured artist in the magazine! Let’s start, could you please tell us a bit about yourself and where you come from? ROMINA: Hello! Thank you! I’m happy to be a part of this. I’m Romina and I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina and am 33 years old. I’ve been together with my husband for 12 years and I think we are ready to start having kids. I’m a city girl, but I long to live in the countryside or at least the suburbs. TF: Could you describe the kind of work you do? R: I work as a freelancer in graphic design and illustration. I work lettering japanese manga for a local publisher and I do illustrations and scenery design for a theater company. Also I work for I HAVE WINGS, which takes a lot of my time so I juggle all these activities together. I consider myself a workaholic! For I HAVE WINGS it all started as a hobby, but it grew and grew and now it’s part of my job. Freelancing has been hard with the crisis, so I HAVE WINGS has helped me a lot. So, I am very very thankful to the Blythe community that continues to support my work. TF: Where does your inspiration come from? R: I would say movies. I like to watch and revisit some favorites like: Sense & Sensibility, Pride & Prejudice, The Duchess, Emma, Oliver Twist and anything from the Edwardian, Victorian or Regency era, fantastic and anime too. Perhaps I will not get a whole idea for an outfit but details, ruffles or appliques. Just hints of what I want to do. I also take a lot from real human fashion. Usually from japanese magazines. Right now I am obsessed with Alexander McQueen’s work. I love the challenge of adapting for the doll size and figuring out the scale. I’m always looking for ways to add new and fresh details to my clothes. I spent a lot of time developing these things and also a lot of time rummaging in vintage craft shops, jewelry suppliers and button shops.

|

64

TF: What colors and materials do you see yourself working with the most and why? R: I think I like muted colors and ivory, black and blue. I try to change my palette all the time because I get bored very easily. I can’t do the same pattern over and over again. It gets repetitive very easily. I need to try something new and then maybe revisit some old ideas and redevelop them. My ultimate favorite fabric has to be cotton voile, because it allows me to crinkle it and it has a very natural flow. It makes the garments look real and not stiff like, well… doll clothes. TF: Could you show and tell us a little about your favorite creations up until now?

1

R: (image 1) This one, was one of my latest creations. It’s called “Mori Autumn”. I like to play with textures and this does the trick. There’s lace, fringe, fur, tartan, vintage flowers, pompoms, velvet, embroidery. It has a nordic style mixed with gypsy and I think all of these together actually work. I like experimenting with different silhouettes. I´m planning to do a reprise of this in the near future. (image 2 ) This one is also a custom doll made for the Blythe Summit, a sort of Variety Fair, held in Junie Moon this past May. It was called “Polska Wanderer”, a gypsy name for forest walker. This was a challenge because I had to make a custom doll and reproduce the outfit in series, so I had to be careful that the outfit was not too detailed or intricate. It’s not the same designing a dress for one doll, were you can go crazy with embroideries, jackets, hats, etc. But to later repeat this 10 times, its limiting in a way. This outfit had a velvet vest, a patchwork dress, a petticoat, a belt, and a headscarf. (image 3 ) “Follow me, Deer”. I simply love this set. It’s childish, it reminds me of the clothes I wore as a kid. It’s playful and it can be easily mixed and matched with other clothes. People always ask about this outfit, so I think I will have to make more to keep the community happy!

4 (image 4) This is actually a custom doll I made for the 10th Blythe Anniversary Event, celebrated this past June in Tokyo. What I love the most is the detail in the skirt. It took long hours of sewing this appliqué, but it turned out elegant and brought the whole thing to life. Again, I like the texture, the different levels of detail in a dress. TF: When did you start collecting dolls? What was your fist one and how many do you have now? R: It all started in February 2004. I received my first Blythe (A Velvet Minuet) as a present from my husband. And it was love at first sight. I wasn’t familiar with online shopping yet, so I started making my own clothes for her. I was part of This Is Blythe forum, back in the days when we were a small group, and some people seemed interested in my outfits so in June 2004 I opened an online shop. Soon after I started buying more dolls and it all went downhill from that point on. I sold many of them so at the moment I have: 14 Blythes, 1 Blythe Middie, 1 Lati Blue Cara, 1 Pullip, 1Dal, 3 Tiny Betsy, 1 Odecco & 1 Nikki and 2 Momokos. Is still feel like I have too many dolls and I don’t give them enough attention. But I can’t part with anyone anymore. I think this is a small as it gets.

TF: Do you think your love for dolls influences your life and your routine? R: Definetly, It changed my life. First, because of all the wonderful, loving , amazing people I’ve met. I can say I have true friends scattered across the globe and I care for them as much as I do for my everyday friends. Second, It made me quite productive. I’ve always been a creative, crafty and artistic person, but never seemed to find a medium that worked for me. It seems I had to find this doll to discover fabric and needles are my paint brush so I am happy and very thankful for that. It has changed my routine in a fantastic way. I get to use my creative juices all the time! Also, I get to play with dolls everyday... TF: What do you like most when creating and sewing for dolls? I like the challenge. I usually sketch something up, very fast. And Idea perhaps that came from a dress in a shop, or on the street or a picture in a magazine. Then I have to find a way to make it come to life: patterns, closures, details. Sometimes I add leather belts and stuff that is probably impossible to make at that scale, but when I finally can make it happen, it’s the

best feeling. When I see the finished outfit and it looks exactly as it did on my head its total bliss. Of course, this only happens every once in a while. Sometimes I get close to what I imagined, but not perfection. So those moments of planet alignment are treasured! TF: You also make custom Blythe dolls, how did that start? I started making them for myself. I ventured on customizing thanks to Melissa’s tutorials, back in the days when her site was called Puchimadam instead of Puchicollective. It was all trial and error… It took me a long time to get the nerve to actually make one for auction. Still today I don’t find the time to make custom dolls regularly. So I do maybe one a year or so. This year I made FIVE for Junie Moon and CWC, and it was quite challenging (especially because the short timeframe). I don’t like to rush these things. To me custom dolls are projects that grow slowly. TF: Tell us about your custom girls, i see they all have this romantic feel to them! Yes! To me, Blythe is a delicate creature. A girl of no more than 15 years old. I like to make them sweet, nostalgic and perhaps a teeny bit sad. I do very subtle carving and sculpting, just to accentuate features, but nothing too dramatic. I use airbrush for eyes and eyelids, usually in earthy soft tones. I like to add freckles and “sun kissed” blushes. An overall “natural” look.

A wonderful insight at Romina’s workspace. So many details and colors that all come together by the hands of this amazing artist.

|

TF: In 2009 one of your girls was miss popularity in the Blythe Beauty Contest, how did that feel and how much work did you put into a project like that? R: Well, that was actually a huge thing. Specially for my little internet brand *laughs*. I had an idea for a doll and started making her the year before as a personal project, it was themed as a Winter Princess. Amazingly it turned out that year’s Contest theme was Seasons, so a winter girl fit right into it. I continued to work on her and made her as pretty as I could imagine. (she is the girl showing on the right) In the end she got selected as a semifinalist. With a lot of help from my family, people who bought raffle tickets and tearfully parting with some dolls, I was able to travel to Tokyo and experience the event in person. It was magical! I met so many lovely people and friends I still treasure today. On the flight back to Buenos Aires, as I stepped out of the plane, my husband called me on my cellphone and told me I had won Miss Popularity, so yeah, it was like a fairy tale. This opened a lot of doors for I HAVE WINGS, and it made me take this more seriously and engage with it as if it were my main job. TF: Would you like to leave a message to everyone reading this? A simple and heart-felted THANK YOU! I cannot believe I wake up everyday and get to do this. Everyday I feel enormous gratitude towards the community, the customers, the fans for this. They give their support, they leave lovely comments, they really do care for their outfits. It’s more than I could have ever dreamt of and it gives me certainty that if you work hard and are creative, it really does shine through your work, and most of all, can make you proud and happy. TF: Thank you so much Romina for sharing so much of your passion with us and for your wonderful contribution with the interview, images and dress pattern (in the following pages). We couldn’t be any more happy with having you join our magazine!*

Little Red Riding Hood, a girl from a faraway kingdom, got lost in a mysterious enchanted forrest where autumn was the only season anyone living there, knew. The forrest’s captives never saw a clear summer’s day or snowflakes dancing in the air. While years went by in the real world, time moved at a snail’s pace in the forrest. Thanks to the Rose Princess lifting the enchantment, Little Red Riding Hood and her friends could flee the forrest before it awoke from its slumber.
