Football Team, Tioga Downs Support “Wounded Warriors”
The Waverly High School football team, which has been working to raise funds and awareness for the Wounded Warrior Project, visited Tioga Downs last month to thank owner Jeff Gural for his support in that mission. Mr. Gural generously donated $3500 to the team to purchase Wounded Warrior jerseys. The Wounded Warrior Project is a military and veterans charity service organization empowering injured veterans and their families. During their visit, the team recorded a video tribute thanking all of those who serve our country. The recording will be played on the team’s video board at the Wounded Warrior game on Friday Sep-
tember 8, Waverly’s first home game of the season. “It’s no secret that I’m very passionate about supporting the men and women who have bravely and selflessly served our country,” Jeff Gural said. “It’s wonderful that these students already share that great respect and appreciation for the veterans who have sacrificed so much for our freedom. It was my pleasure to donate these jerseys; I could not be prouder of their efforts.” The Waverly football team has been fundraising, and will also be making a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project.

The Apalachin Fire Department responded to a tractor-trailer accident on Pennsylvania Avenue between Rhodes and Lillie Hill Roads near Yorks Landscaping on Wednesday, August 30, just before 11am. It was reported that the driver fell asleep at the wheel. No one was seriously injured and no other vehicles were involved. The Tioga County Haz-Mat team responded to the scene for diesel fuel that leaked into the ditch. Campville Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Quick action by the Owego Fire Department contained a fire on August 14 that started in a tanning bed at “The Tanning Spa” on North Ave. in Owego. No injuries were reported, the fire was contained to the tanning bed. Campville Fire Department also assisted at the scene.

Lion 5K Walk/Run - October 14 The Apalachin Lions Club will host its 6th Annual Lion 5K Walk/Run on October 14, 2017, at the Apalachin Fireman’s Field Day Grounds in Apalachin. The event starts at 10:00 am with registration opening at 8:30 am. The entry fee is $20 (pre-registration and includes an official race T-shirt) and $25 (day of the race, with limited T-shirts available). A small snack will be available after the race. The pre-registration deadline is October 6. Prizes will be awarded to the Top Male, Top Female, and several different
ago brackets. A Kids Fun Run will also take place during the event. The walk/run will benefit the Apalachin Lions Club Activities Fund. Christian Men’s Group to Donate to Kali’s Klubhouse On Friday, September 15, Brothers for the Cross will make a donation to Kali’s Klubhouse at Fargnoli Farm in Apalachin. Brothers for the Cross is a Christian men’s group that encourages younger men of all faiths to become involved in the church. Their fundraising efforts included a car show in June and the proceeds will be delivered at this presentation. Kali’s Klub House is a non-profit organization which serves people with
special needs, at-risk youth, and veterans using both mounted and unmounted equine activities. A team of volunteers, therapists, and equine specialists dedicate themselves to the growth and empowerment of the individuals they serve. The mission of Kali’s Klub House is to provide an environment of support which allows individuals with emotional, physical, and social disabilities to expand their boundaries and understanding of the world around them.

A presentation on transportation options in Tioga County will be held on Thursday, September 28, from 7:45 to 9:00 am in the auditorium of the county office building at 56 Main Street in Owego. Andy Fagan, Director of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tioga County, will be the presenter. Through a mobility management grant from the Rural Heath Network of South Central NY, Andy has been working with the Tioga County Transportation Committee to complete an inventory of transportation options. At the workshop, you will learn about transportation options and resources
available to Tioga County residents: the “Getthere” Call Center; “Connection to Care” assistance; Travel Training; and new travel innovations underway. You will also have an opportunity to share transportation needs and suggest transportation solutions. Community, OFA Grads Invited to Join Pep Band The Owego Free Academy Pep Band, under the direction of new OFA band director, Nick Olesko, is opening its membership to all residents of Apalachin and Owego, and to all OFA graduates. The mission of the pep band is to get the fans and team fired up with fun and exciting music in the stands, and entertain the audience at halftime with a mixture of current hits and classic favorites. The OA Pep Band will rehearse in the OFA band room on the Thursday and Friday before each home game, however it is not mandatory to attend all rehears-
als or games. The OA Pep Band will provide mellophones, baritones, trombones, sousaphones, and percussion instruments, as well as music and flip folders. After April the giraffe captivated audiences around the world this spring with the highly anticipated birth of her baby, Tajiri, Tim Stoughton said giraffes were the clear choices for this year’s theme. “We’re so proud to feature a design with Animal Adventure Park resident mother giraffe April and her calf Tajiri. Their likeness in our cornfield was made from a favorite picture from the keepers and staff at Animal Adventure Park,” Stoughton said. “The live stream giraffe cam enabled the world’s internet viewers to witness the amazing birth of Tajiri, gaining fans both locally and nationally while we all watched and waited together. Animal Adventure Park owner Jordan Patch said he’s honored by the nod to the giraffes and his park. “I was just amazed when I first saw the photo of the corn maze. The way this design came to life based on a photo of our April and Tajiri is incredible,” Patch said. “Animal Adventure Park and the Stoughton Farm corn maze are both be-
loved destinations for families in our region, and it’s wonderful to see these two local attractions come together. We encourage our visitors to make a trip to the farm and show their support.” The 2017 corn maze is an outdoor adventure that boggles the mind with its vast 8+ acres of pathways, turning points and dead ends. Part of an increasingly popular “agritainment” trend, it will be joined this year by more than 265 “MAiZE” sites in U.S., Canada, Poland and the UK. Stoughton Farm’s corn maze opens to the public on September 16 and runs through October 31. Hours are 9:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday-Saturday and 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Sunday (last admission is 30 minutes before closing). On Friday and Saturday nights starting September 29, hours will extend till 10:00 pm for a nighttime flashlight maze (last admission takes place at 9:00 pm). Group reservations are available at any time, and school field trips are available during regular school hours by reservation. “The MAiZE” is located at 10898 State Route 38 in Newark Valley. Admission is $9.95 for ages 10 and up, $5.95 for ages 4-9, and free for kids 3 and under. Maze admission discounts are available for groups and field trips of fifteen or more people. We attended Owego Free Academy together, and both raised our families right here in Owego. Jonathan conducts his business and personal life with character, integrity and always with respect and kindness to everyone he meets. He has owned and or managed businesses for nearly 4 decades. He knows how to read a spreadsheet, balance a budget, and best of all,
manage people and departments. I know too that Jonathan is a proponent of transparency in government, and is a prudent fiscal manager. Supporting Castellucci for Town Supervisor
We are writing this letter in support of Don Castellucci for Owego Town Supervisor. Perhaps you do not know Don personally, but you will know of the many things he does for you and this community…. Are you a senior who attends the Apalachin Lions Senior Dinner? Have you donated blood and wondered who organizes that? Do you donate or receive items at Tioga County Rural Ministries? Are you a Republican and looking to become a committee member, or seek office? Did you experience a ZERO percent tax increase on your town portion of your property tax bill in 2017? Has he personally come to your home to hear issues that concern you? Do you enjoy the Hickories Park now that it is refurbished, modernized and constructed to recover much quicker from the next catastrophic event? Are your street lights undergoing much needed improvements? Don Castellucci is accountable and fiscally responsible as he manages the Town of Owego. The Town of Owego has continual successful audits. He and his staff readily adjust to accounting requirements as required by law. He values and budgets for ongoing training in all departments. This ensures the town meets its requirements of safety, licensing and continuing job training credits. Speaking of budgets and Town spending, the Town already has a transparent process. There is a lot of information available on the Town website. The budget and the minutes are posted
so anyone can find what and where money is being spent. The town can only spend monies thru bi weekly abstracts and resolutions. Therefore, the Town Board approves all expenditures. Under Don’s supervision, we have had two major floods to our area and other major weather events. He, along with fellow board members have worked very hard to control spending while at the same time recover and repair the damages to the Town. In addition to many of the flood repair projects the Town has undertaken, is a new facility to house the Highway Department, Utilities Department and Parks Department. This flooding has caused interruption in services and catastrophic equipment losses. This is a joint project between NYS, FEMA and the Town to mitigate any future losses. We believe a project of this size needs continuity and experience in town government, which only Don has, to reach maximum benefit. We believe Don understands real issues facing our town, such as infrastructure, mandates, jobs and the opiate problem. He tries to find real solutions that do not further increase spending if possible. We have known him to listen to residents’ concerns. We have a safe and beautiful community along with a Town Government that is in good financial health. We also have a Supervisor that is more about managing, then being everyone’s friend. Dear Editors, In spite of what the present administration considers a hoax I wish to draw attention to what must be considered the greatest threat to global survival. Climate Change is real. We, globally, are experiencing and will continue to experience conditions of localized drought, severe heavy storms with flood waters and rising ocean levels. The drought conditions will continue to extend desert conditions and reduce agricultural productivity throughout the world. This leads to emigration, regional stress and governmental chaos. Heavy rain storms such as repeated 100 year flood waters create havoc as many of our communities are located in flood plains. The damaging conditions are not easily protected by berms and evacuation plans.
The greatest threat however is a rising sea level. Much of our global population resides on our coasts. Our military is fully aware of this threat. When major cities of millions of people have to move it is going to create a dilemma that we have not yet experienced. It is not going to be pretty. The global temperatures are rising. The carbon dioxide and methane that we add to the atmosphere facilitate this warming. The glaciers are melting, coral reefs are dying with increased ocean acidification and our winters are getting shorter. We must take action and encourage solar, wind and geothermal energy sources as well as reducing personal energy demands. Marty Borko Waverly, NY

38 Special Concert Raises $110,000 for Southern Tier Veterans Support Group

Tioga Downs and the Gural family are thrilled to announce that last month’s 38 Special Concert raised $110,000 for the Southern Tier Veteran’s Support Group. “We are forever in debt to the men and women who have bravely served our country’s military,” Jeff Gural, Chairman of American Racing & Entertainment, said. “We’re proud to have surpassed our goal of $100,000. While we can never fully repay them their service and sacrifice, we know this money will go a long way toward assisting our veterans.” On August 23, at Tioga Downs in Nichols, Gural presented the check to the Southern Tier Veterans Sup-
port Group (STVSG). The mission of STVSG is to provide a network of resources for local veterans, service members and their families. Tickets to the concert were $15 each. For every ticket sold, Jeff and Paula Gural donated an additional $15 to help our veterans in the Southern Tier. Last year marked the tenth anniversary celebration for Tioga Downs. Candor Emergency Squad Golf Tournament - Sept. 23 The Candor Emergency Squad will host their Eighth Annual Four-Person Captain and Crew Golf Tournament at the Catatonk Golf Club in Candor on Saturday, September 23, with an 8:30 am shot-gun start.
