Traci's Hope BBQ on October 6 The 15th annual Traci's Hope BBQ will be held on Saturday, October 6, from 12 Noon to 6:00 pm at the Apalachin Fairgrounds in Apalachin. The event includes Barbecue by Smokey Legend BBQ, music, raffle table, and lots for the kids to do. Cost is $12 for adults, $5 for kids ages 6 to 12. All proceeds benefit those fighting breast cancer in Broome, Tioga, Bradford, and Susquehanna Counties. The 12th Annual Motorcycle Ride to Traci's Hope will begin at Ransom Steele Tavern at 552 Main Street in Apalachin. Register 10:30 am to 12:30 pm the same day, ride leaves at 12:30 pm. Family Development Credential Graduates Recognized
Celebrate COLUMBUS DAY with us on October 12th
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tioga County and Tioga Opportunities Inc. recognized the 2018 graduates of the Family Development Credential Program. Participants completed 90 hours of classroom instruction, prepared portfolios demonstrating their skill development and successfully passed a written exam. The Family Development Credential is a professional development program offered through UCONN and facilitated locally through a partnership between CCE Tioga and Tioga Opportunities Inc. This nationally recognized pro-
gram enhances workers ability to serve families from a strengths based perspective and collaborate with other agencies and community maximize positive outcomes for families. Apalachin Woman Joins Bank’s Board of Directors Wendy Walsh of Apalachin, District Manager of Tioga County Soil and Water Conservation District, has joined the Tioga State Bank Board of Directors. Wendy resides in Apalachin with her husband Eli, and their two young daughters, Mahayla and Tracy. Wendy graduated from University at Buffalo with a MS in Civil Engineering/ Environmental Engineering Science. In 2000, Wendy was hired as the Water Quality/Nutrient Management Specialist. While there, she has obtained two professional certifications; Certified Crop Advisor and Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Specialist. In 2005, Wendy was promoted to District Manager. Wendy has been an active member of the Upper Susquehanna Coalition (USC)
and in 2013, she also took on the additional responsibilities of becoming the USC Watershed Coordinator. In her current position, Wendy is responsible for all aspects of natural resource management of environmental and conservation programs on both private and public properties/entities. Wendy and her family have a farm where they raise and market Angus and Hereford beef cattle, pasture raised pork and maple syrup direct to local consumers. 7th Annual Lions 5K Walk/Run - Oct. 13 The Apalachin Lions Club is hosting its 7th Annual Lion 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, October 13. It will be held at the Apalachin Firemen’s Field Day Grounds at 10:00 am with registration opening up at 8:30 am. The race will help benefit the Apalachin Lions Club Activities Fund, with all proceeds going back into the Apalachin, Campville, and Little Meadows communities. The entry fee for this event is $20 (pre -registration and includes an official race
T-shirt) or $25 (day of the race, with limited T-shirts available). A small snack will be available after the race. The pre-registration deadline is Saturday, October 6. On Saturday, October 20, some of the most talented alumni from the Newark Valley Central School district will present a free community concert which celebrates the accomplishments of past Newark Valley High School (NVHS) graduates while accepting donations to be put towards scholarships for the next generation of NVHS seniors. Many distinguished alumni will perform in the concert. Mrs. Brenna McLaud-Bichara, award winning dancer and choreographer from Vancover, BC, is returning to her hometown to perform. Curriculum includes required courses on building consensus, financial management, ethics, management, and the foundations of county government. “Recognizing that counties are the cornerstone of any governmental structure, I heartily recommend this curriculum to anyone who serves in any public capacity,” said McCafferty. McCafferty began her career as an Environmental Sanitarian. Subsequently, she has worked in all aspects of Public Health: disease control and surveillance, environmental protection, personal health; in both the public and private sectors. “County leaders graduate from the Institute's vigorous curriculum equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the increasing demands of local government leadership - now and in the future,” said NYSAC Executive Director Stephen J. Acquario. Empowering county leaders to engage in civil and constructive dialogue
on the challenges they face, the Institute serves as a platform throughout the State to meet and discuss the unique issues of county government. Charles H. Nesbitt Jr., NYSAC President and Chief Administrative Officer of Orleans County, encourages county leaders like Gates to participate in Institute to work collaboratively to learn and develop solutions and strategies for local government. “Graduating from the County Government Institute demonstrates a distinct and special commitment to public service at the local level,” said Nesbitt. CGI courses are offered at NYSAC’s Fall Seminar in addition to an annual Legislative Conference in February, and Finance School in May. Courses are also offered regionally throughout the year to enable county leaders to stay up-to-date on timely issues and opportunities in local government. “CGI facilitated my learning about New York's county structure, I especially valued the ‘Foundations of County Government’ and ‘County Budget & Finance’ core courses,” said McCafferty. Dear Apalachin Taxpayers: As we all enjoy the last few days of summer and look forward to the changing leaves ushering fall in, the fire district heads into our busy season with local events and budget season upon us. First though, I’d like to take the opportunity to congratulate six volunteer firefighters from Apalachin who completed the annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at the Binghamton State Office Building. Lieutenant Joe Opper, FF Colton Washburn, FF Colton Luker, FF Lewis Race, FF Zack Wilt, and FF Emma Roden climbed 110 flights of stairs with bunker gear and SCBA; 110 flights being the equivalent of the stairs in the original Twin Towers. Wearing the names and photographs of some of the 343 firefighters that died in the terror attacks of September 11th, they honor the memory of all of those that perished that fateful day. As September draws to a close, the Fire Commissioners are busy working on our budget for 2019. In short, we have every intention of remaining within the 2% property tax limit. There are some additional unfunded mandates that we’ve received from Albany. Most impactful will be a new requirement to purchase cancer insurance for all experienced interior firefighters. While no one likes unfunded mandates, this bill was supported by the NYS Association of Fire Districts as firefighters face an exponentially higher risk of cancer than civilians. First year costs are unknown today but anticipated to be between
$2,500 - $6,000 for 2019. Additional budget items include funding our capital reserve accounts for buildings, equipment, and vehicles. These reserve accounts allow the district to replace obsolete equipment and vehicles on a scheduled basis without the need to borrow each time. The Auction Auditorium Holds First Auction The Auction Auditorium on Elm Street in Owego held its first auction on September 1. CEO Leonard Hilldale and staff worked hard to bring the large, comfortable auction house to life, and they plan to keep working to improve things. Not only a more comfortable alternative, but more high-tech; making it easier for customers to place their bids and see the merchandise. At the first auction many bidders were using their phones to bid from various locations around the building; while examining the items and enjoying a delicious meal. Future enhancements planned for
Auction Auditorium include a dining area where guests can watch the bidding, and the addition of flat screen televisions in the auditorium to view the online bidding. Auctions will be the first Saturday of each month, with preview at 6:00 am and auction at 11:00 am. Tuesday through Saturday, two weeks prior to each auction, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Bruce Roloson of Apalachin has been elected deputy director of the Antique Wireless Association (AWA) and its Antique Wireless Association in Bloomfield, and Honeoye Falls resident Robert Hobday has been elected director. Roloson and Hobday were elected to their new positions at a special Antique Wireless Association (AWA) board of trustees meeting Saturday, September 8. The meeting was held to fill the position left vacant by former director Thomas Pearson, Jr’s. retirement. Hobday had been deputy director of the museum since 2009 and Roloson was the museum’s Curator Emeritus. Hobday has been a member of AWA
since 1984. Roloson, a member since 1967, has held many AWA offices, including president. Both are retired from electric utilities – Hobday from Rochester Gas & Electric, Roloson from New York State Electric & Gas. The museum, established in 1952, is located at 6925 Route 5 in Bloomfield, New York, just east of the Route 444 intersection. It is open to the public Tuesdays 10:00 am to 3:00 pm and Saturdays 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Visitors can drop in on the radio operator aboard the Titanic (before it sank), sit at the massive Voice of America control board, see the evolution of the cell phone and much, much more. Authentically Rural Weekend to Explore Rural Heritage You are invited to celebrate Tompkins County’s rural heritage. On the first-ever Authentically Rural Weekend, October 5-7, 2018, Ithaca Heritage welcomes residents and visitors to explore Tompkins County’s rural heritage. A Finger Lakes wine and paired tastings reception kicks off the weekend on Friday, October 5, followed the next day by rural heritage tours of farms and rural landmarks in Dryden, the Dryden Homestead Heritage Fair Day, and a farm-to-bistro harvest dinner at Coltivare on Saturday, October 6. The weekend closes with a homestead brunch at the Schickel family’s Maryhill Farm in Dryden on Sunday, October 7. The weekend is a New York State Path Through History Weekend. Ithaca Heritage (ithacaheritage. com) has organized the weekend to showcase Tompkins County’s enduring rural heritage and its continuing impact on our cultural and economic vitality. Ithaca Heritage is a heritage tourism collaboration between Historic Ithaca and The History Center in Tompkins County to attract visitors to our region through guided and self-guided tours and other events. Primarily focused on vibrant rural areas in Dryden this year, the biannual event will spotlight other areas in the county in subsequent years. The weekend coincides with the Dryden Town Historical Society’s Dryden Homestead Heritage Fair Day on Saturday, October 6, with a chance to enjoy rural heritage crafts, traditional music, and local food vendors.
Each event gives participants an opportunity to appreciate how vital rural areas are to our county’s cultural life and how these traditional lifeways have evolved. A morning guided bus tour on Saturday, October 6, explores both a large-scale farm and a smaller one and includes an architectural history tour of the Village of Freeville. An afternoon tour takes visitors to a heritage homestead that dates back to the early 19th century and includes stops at two unique octagonal structures: a restored octagonal barn and a living history schoolhouse. Saturday’s harvest dinner showcases the farm-to-bistro program at Coltivare, run by Tompkins Cortland Community College. At the dinner, Firelight Camps CEO Bobby Frisch, whose ecotourism company has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Conde Nast Traveler, speaks about how he helped turn an underutilized rural site into a haven for an “elevated camping” experience. Sunday’s homestead brunch at Maryhill Farm in Dryden completes the weekend events with a meal catered by Serendipity Catering. Schickel Construction founder Bruno Schickel discusses how his parents founded and ran the farm and how he and his siblings are keeping the farm in the family. My name is Kristina Knight and I am a 9th year Girl Scout. I am working on earning my Gold Award, which is the highest service award a Girl Scout can earn. I just recently completed my Gold Award Project – a pollinator garden at Waterman Conservation Center in Apalachin. About a year ago I heard in the media that bees were in decline. About 1/3 of our food comes from bees, so they are a huge part of our ecosystem. Bees are responsible for pollinating blueberries, apples, oranges, peaches, corn, coffee, and many other foods we eat daily. Bees are in trouble because of pesticides, climate change, poor nutrition, and many other reasons that humans have an effect on. Because of that, I decided that for my project I would plant a pollinator garden grown with
plants that are native to New York to provide a source of food for the pollinators. I made sure to plant perennials so that they will grow back every year. My garden is located at Waterman Conservation center in a 20x60 foot space that was originally intended for a butterfly garden. I seeded the plants in March and transferred them to my garden in July. I also got plant donations from Nanticoke Gardens and Farmer Browns Marketplace that I put in my garden. I mulched over the plants to prevent weeds from growing. I placed signs to identify each plant. On August 23 I had an unveiling and invited the kids from the Nature Camp from Waterman. I taught them about the bees and gave them each a perennial plant and an informational brochure to take home.

Apalachin Lions HOBY 2019 The Apalachin Lions Club, in conjunction with our parent organization (Lions Clubs International), is sponsoring a sophomore student from Owego Free Academy and Vestal Senior High School to participate in the regional Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) workshop to be held in the

Candor Historical Society Participates in Candor’s 2018 Fall Festival The Candor Historical Society will hold their annual Bake Sale and Christmas Market during Candor’s Fall Festival of Events on Saturday, October 6, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, at their new location on 25 Main Street. This year the Candor Historical Society is also participating with the NY Path Through History Weekend (www.paththroughhistory.ilove ny.com), and will hold an open house for those who want to enjoy a few reminiscences, check out the status of the center, or discover ways in which they can help the historical society succeed in their most recent endeavor. Although the Candor History Center is not up to snuff and not ready to open to the public on a regular basis, this historic location has played a big part in Candor’s agricultural history. The Candor Historical Society is working hard to assemble and organize a multitude of records, and a few displays, but there is still much to be done. A separate ac-
count is being set up to handle donations, grants, etc. specifically for their capital project. The open house will display various poster presentations depicting Candor’s 200-year history in Tioga County. The tour will include the second floor where the Candor Masonic Lodge presently holds their meetings. Unlike other events, there is no ‘big’ yard sale this year, and there will be no drop-off of useable items. However, the bake sale is a major source of income for annual maintenance, so anyone wishing to donate baked goods, can drop them off, starting at 8:00 am on Saturday morning. Carol’s Books will also on hand to include her Candor history books, as well as her latest novels. Candor Historical Society promotional items will be available for purchase. Art Competition Call for Entries The Newark Valley United Church of Christ will hold an art competition in November with the theme “Reflections on Justice.” The competition will consider all entries submitted up to the November 8, 2018 with the theme “Reflections on Justice.” Entries may be brought to Newark Valley United Church of Christ, 32 S. Drumbeats Through Time - Oct. 6 The 15th annual Drumbeats Through Time will be held on Saturday, October 6, at the Susquehanna River Archaeological Center (SRAC) at 358 Broad Street in Waverly. The event is free to attend and doors open to the public at 1:00 pm. There will be speakers and presentations from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. At 4:00 pm the Seneca Dancers will perform. SRAC’s Dr. DeeAnne Wymer and Dan Caister will present “The 2018 Field Season Findings at The Desisti Site: A Tale of Two Occupations.” The presentation will illustrate the unique items being excavated at the site this year and what findings have been revealed using scientific carbon dating methods. At 2:00 pm, past NYSAA President Dr. Bill Engelbrecht will present ” Early Late Woodland Pottery from Northwest Pennsylvania.” Current terminology used to describe ceramics in the Northeast presents a challenge for both avocational and professional. In some cases two or more ceramic type descriptions overlap while in other cases type names in different areas describe similar material. Some types describe ceramics used for a long period of time, rendering them poor temporal indicators. Using an attribute approach provides a clearer picture of individual specimens but renders comparison with ceramics from other sites problematic unless they are described using the same system. This
presentation describes ceramics from a pre-Iroquoian multi-component site in northwest Pennsylvania using a revised ceramic typology coupled with an attribute approach. At 3:00 pm, SRAC’s David Moyer will present, “Prehistoric and Early Historic Native Landscapes in the Upper Susquehanna Valley.” The late prehistory and early history of the Upper Susquehanna Valley has created a unique landscape that has presented many challenges to archaeologists. In the 1300s and 1400s the region boasted a large population of prehistoric farmers. It appears that the valleys were then abandoned until the late 17th and early 18th centuries, when the Susquehanna and Chemung valleys were occupied by Native refugees from other regions displaced by war and European encroachment. These village communities continued to expand throughout the 18th century until the outbreak of the American Revolution when these settlements were abandoned. At 4:00 pm, Seneca Native American historian Dick Kane will give a presentation on the cultural history of the Seneca. Mr. Kane will display authentic cultural items and discuss their significance. At 4:00 pm, the Seneca Dancers will perform, sharing their culture, music, and dance.The Seneca dancers have been a very popular part of SRAC’s Annual event for over a decade.
