SPRING / 2014
MESSAGE FROM THE ASSOCIATION Dear Friends and Alumni of Yale Baseball, It’s hard to believe that the 2014 season is underway, but not surprising that the Yale Baseball team is competing hard and improving with every game. As a member of the incredible support network for the program, I am excited to see our team and coaches giving us reason to be proud (including an 8-7 win against top-ranked LSU on March 2nd!). It has been a wonderful year for the Yale Baseball Association. We gathered in New Haven this fall for our annual Yale Baseball tailgate at the Yale-Harvard football game. On a snowy night in February, we held the inaugural Yale Baseball Leadoff Dinner. It was a great opportunity for the team and supporters to spend time together in preparation for the 2014 season. Congressman Ron DeSantis ’01 was honored as the Yale Baseball Man of the Year and if you haven’t already I encourage you to check out the event press release on the Yale Bulldogs website. Our association has much to celebrate and feel good about, but our work is not done. It’s important that we keep the momentum going and that each of us does what we can to support the program financially. I write today to ask you to make your annual gift as we strive to meet our $66,000 annual fundraising goal. We were able to meet and exceed
this goal last year, by raising $68,600 for Yale Baseball and it would be a great testament to the strength of this group if we could repeat that success. As you know, the work of this association provides crucial support for Coach Stuper and all of the student-athletes. No gift is too small to help them achieve their goals. There are multiple ways to show your support. Write a check payable to Yale University and mail it to Yale Baseball Association, P.O. Box 1844, New Haven, CT 06508-1844. Visit giving.yale.edu to pay by credit card and be sure to select ‘Athletics’ and ‘Baseball’ from the drop down menus. You can also visit our association page for more information. Thank you in advance for supporting Yale Baseball!

YALE BASEBALL LEADOFF DINNER
O
n February 15th Yale Baseball held the first annual Yale Baseball Leadoff Dinner. The event brought many alumni and friends of the program together for a low key night of mixing and mingling. Coach Stuper previewed the 2014 season and introduced this year's team. For the first time, an award was given to the Yale Baseball Man of the Year, which honors a member of the Yale Baseball community
whose life and work symbolizes everything the program stands for. This year's honoree was Congressman Ron DeSantis '01 who has taken the lessons learned at Yale Field to Harvard Law School, the U.S. Navy and now the 6th congressional district of Florida. The evening was a success and one the program hopes to continue for years to come.
BASEBALL / SPRING, 2014
COACH’S CORNER Dear Alumni and Friends, I write this as I sit in our condo in Florida. We are currently on our spring trip and the weather has been great. We have played seven games thus far, and the results have been very encouraging. Prior to coming to Florida, we took a foray to the Yankee Stadium of college baseball HEAD COACH, JOHN STUPER when we took on LSU in Baton Rouge in a three game series. It began auspiciously as we were pounded in the first contest 19-0. My guys kept plugging and with a freshman (Chasen Ford) on the mound, we lost 3-0 the next day. I think that showed our players that they could play with the number one ranked team in the country. They proved it the next day as we came from six runs down in the fourth inning to best the Tigers 8-7. Needless to say, it was a huge win for us in many ways. We have tried to build on that win, but as you know, each game presents different challenges. We have had a couple of tough losses and a few great wins since. Our defense has been exceptional, and has kept us in virtually every game. I am a firm believer that if you throw strikes and play defense, hitting will take care of itself and you can win a lot of games. Our guys are buying into this and it shows on the field. This has been a great group with which to work. Our senior class of Rob Cerfolio, Kevin Fortunato, Mike Coleman, David Hickey, Jake Hunter, and Captain Cale Hanson have done a superb job leading this team. They have shown the young guys the way through their work ethic and character. I could not be prouder of this group of veterans. We finish this trip with a three game set versus Stetson in Deland, FL. Then it is home and back to the frozen tundra. This winter has been frustrating, but we will continue to work toward our goals. All of these games prior to the Ivy season are used as a barometer to see how good we are and how good we can be. I think we have a chance to be pretty darn good. As always, I hope to see many of you in the stands when the weather gets better. Thanks for your support and for the many text messages and emails I received after the LSU win. We will continue to work hard to make you proud. All the best. JS
