SPRING / 2015

COACH’S CORNER Dear Alumni and Friends, As I write this from my office in downtown New Haven, I look outside and it is not a pretty sight. We just got hit with another snow storm. Not very conducive to the start of my 23rd season here, but optimism still reigns supreme in our program. We try to “control what we can control,” and weather is out of that realm. So, we adjust and move forward. The last two years has seen a resurgence for Yale Baseball. Two years ago we finished second in our division, and last year we ended in a tie for first. We had to travel to Dartmouth, and they bested us in a one game playoff. I think that success whetted everyone’s appetite, and we are anxious to take the next step. Our Spring Trip will see us play the likes of Richmond, Davidson and Duke among others. Much of our preparation will take place indoors in our “Kennel,” which is on- site and has been a huge factor in our improvement. Two indoor batting cages, one of which allows us to have live at bats, has been vital in preparing pitchers and hitters alike. We still venture outside. There are now two turf surfaces of which we take advantage, and as long as the temperatures aren’t hovering around zero, we get quite a bit of defensive work done. The players are moving around constantly, so they sometimes don’t even notice the cold. The old coach, who is mostly observing, is often bound up like the Michelin Man trying to stay warm before he gets to go inside and work with the pitchers. This year’s club has a really nice mix of veterans and young guys. We have what I consider a deep roster, and I will have the ability to stack a

predominantly left handed hitting lineup against a right handed pitcher if I want. Our pitching staff, aided by the addition of four quality freshman arms, should be one of our strengths. We return all league players like Rich Slenker, Robert Baldwin, and the best pitcher in our league, Chris Lanham. Coach Tucker Frawley, our “defensive coordinator,” has some depth to work with as well, and I believe we will be a fine defensive team again. We have some speed, some power, and a number of good hitters. The outlook is bright. As always, we hope to see you sometime this spring. We are going to have a special event to celebrate this, our 150th year. Please look over the rest of this newsletter for details. Thanks so much for your continued support. Go Bulldogs!!
