YALE GOLF MEN’S AND WOMEN’S COACHES CORNERS
I
know many of you are quite familiar with the onslaught of this frigid, record-breaking winter we had. Usually during mid-February we shovel the snow off the mats at the range so the teams can start hitting shots outside, but it proved too cold for even that. Fortunately, we are blessed to have the David Paterson Golf Technology Center and its star attraction, the Trackman, which was used around the clock COLIN SHEEHAN ’97 prior to spring recess. The location of the facility, on the second floor of Payne Whitney, allows players to stop in before or after the group lifts in the varsity weight room on the fourth floor or afternoon basketball games. On behalf of both teams, I want to thank those who supported the Trackman acquisition and additional upgrades last year since the facility and its upkeep are vital to a northeast program like ours. Our spring break consisted of intense practice at the Sea Island resort on St. Simons Island, Georgia. The team began to play qualifiers on courses
S
pring cannot come soon enough. It was a cold and snowy winter. A huge thanks goes out to your support in helping us get a Trackman system for the Dave Paterson Golf Technology Center. With temperatures hardly breaking into the upper 20s, both teams have been able to utilize the Trackman to keep their games in shape for the upcoming CHAWWADEE ROMPOTHONG ’00 spring season. The Trackman system is state of the art and is critical for the teams during the winter months. In addition to using the technology center, the women have been able to fight off the cold by doing strength and conditioning three times a week coupled with yoga. We will definitely be fit and strong out of the links once the snow melts. This spring, the Lady Bulldogs are hoping to continue where they left off in late October with three team wins, a 34-4 record and two individual medalist honors from captain Marika Liu’15 and Elisabeth
like the Seaside, Frederica, Ford Plantation and Secession in the lead-up to the Linger Longer on the Great Waters course at the Reynolds Plantation, an event that will include Alabama and Georgia among other southern teams. We start the mad-dash of the April tournament calendar by hosting the Met Intercollegiate on Saturday, April 4, a one-day, 36-hole event at Century Country Club and Old Oaks Country Club. The following weekend we return to the Princeton Invitational where the team is 75-2 in the past six years. The following weekend we are home for the Yale Spring Invitational with Wake Forest, Duke, Clemson, Virginia and Virginia Tech among the visiting teams. Following that, we conclude the scheduled portion of the year at Saucon Valley’s Grace course for the Ivy League Championship. The team is quite motivated and eager to play their best in the hopes of advancing to the NCAA Regionals at Yale scheduled for May 14-16. In the meantime, we are focused on getting started with the season and posting the best possible result at the Linger Longer among those southern teams who have quite the head start on us. I want to thank the entire Yale golf family for their support of the two teams. It is greatly appreciated. Regards, Colin
Bernabe’17! We were also able to close out the fall ranked #53 in Golfstat rankings, which is one of the best rankings we have had in years. On March 7th, the Lady Bulldogs headed out west and got some needed sun and warm weather. During our week stay in Southern California, we practiced and played at Goose Creek, The Farms, and Torrey Pines. Special thanks goes out to the Bernabe family for helping us out with golf in Southern California. Afterwards, the team headed to St George, Utah to compete in the BYU at Entrada Classic at Snow Canyon Country Club. The team went up against some great teams such as UC-Berkley, Minnesota, BYU, and Kansas State. This was a great trip and helped the team get pumped for the rest of the spring season. Again, all of this would not be possible without your help. On behalf of the team and myself, I would like to thank you again for continuing to cheer us, helping us get the best technology for both teams and allowing us to go compete in warm weather during spring break! Go Bulldogs, Chawwadee
