MESSAGE FROM THE YALE LACROSSE ASSOCIATION Dear Friends and Alumni of Yale Lacrosse, The first day of spring is right around the corner and already the men’s and women’s Yale Lacrosse teams are making tremendous strides. Most of the season has yet to be played so be sure to check out the respective remaining schedules (included in this newsletter) and get to a game to cheer them on!

It has been an amazing fiscal year 2013-2014 for the Yale Lacrosse Association. In October, we hosted our most successful alumni weekend, which yielded record attendance and fundraising at both the golf outing and alumni games. In November, the juniors and seniors of the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams traveled to New York to participate in our annual Mentoring Night, which provides a great forum for networking, career advice and mentorship. Then in January, we held our annual kickoff dinners at the Yale Club in New York City where we honored and celebrated our teams, coaches, administrators, alumni, parents and family members—who are all vital to the continued success of our lacrosse programs. Our final event of the year will be Saturday, March 22nd where we’ll host Alumni Day in New Haven with an Ivy League double-header.

The Yale Lacrosse Association has much to celebrate and to be excited about. However, events are not our only roles and responsibilities.

In light of the budget cuts being implemented throughout Yale, it’s essential now more than ever to hit (and exceed) our annual fundraising goal of $165,000. As of today, we’re 65% the way there.

Where does this money go? The money raised for the Yale Lacrosse Association goes to the most critical needs of our teams, namely travel for games and scrimmages; team equipment; retaining great coaches; and recruiting the next generation of AllIvy and All-American players.

We need your help. We write today to ask you to make your annual gift (if you have not done so already). No gift is too small.

Every dollar counts. There are multiple ways to show your support. Write a check payable to Yale University and mail it to

As you know, the work of the Yale Lacrosse Association provides crucial support for Andy, Anne and all of the student-athletes who comprise the excellent programs we have all come to know.

COACH’S CORNER Dear Alumni and Friends, The 2014 season is underway and the boys worked hard in the weight room, classroom, and on the field in preparation. Last year’s quarterfinal appearance has left us with a feeling of wanting as much or more success as the years past. We, as a group understand that it won’t be easy, and the team’s work ethic reflects that every day.

At present, we have one televised game. We will be playing Harvard on Fox Sports on April 26th. Talks are in the works for possibly airing our Princeton game as well. I hope we can get you out for a game in the spring, but if not hopefully you can catch us on TV.

We said goodbye to Brian Schneider who volunteered three years of his time coaching the goalies and running the box. Brian accepted a position as the assistant women’s coach at Columbia.

We wish him well. In his place is Andrew Stimmel who will take over both goalie and box duties. Coach Stimmel played his collegiate lacrosse for Andrew Baxter at Ohio State.

We are off to a solid start beating then #17 ranked St. Johns on Reese stadium and 18th ranked Bryant. Unfortunately we dropped a hard fought game versus #19 Fairfield on March 8th. Our upcoming stretch of games is one of the hardest in the country, but we will continue to work hard and hope that the win-loss record takes care of itself. The past few years have taught us that we can only focus on today and getting better. We will continue to do just that and count our chips when we are done.

COACH’S CORNER Dear Alumnae and Friends, We are very excited about the start of the 2014 season. We have opened 5-0 as we head into spring break and have had the best start since 2001. We have a core of experienced upperclassmen who are complimented by a talented group of freshmen. The returners include nine seniors, eight juniors and ten sophomores while ten new additions to our roster comprise the freshman class. I am excited by the promise of this team and what we can accomplish together.

Tanya Kotowicz begins her second year on the coaching staff and will continue to develop our defense and we welcomed a new assistant coach, Ashley Casiano, to our staff this fall. Ashley works with our goalkeepers.

Outstanding facilities, coaches, experienced upper classmen and talented freshmen are all contributing to the team’s success this year.

YALE ATHLETICS COMPLIANCE CORNER As a supporter of Yale athle cs, you may employ current Yale student-athletes provided: • The student-athlete is paid the going rate for similar experience; • The student-athlete is compensated for work actually performed; and • The student-athlete does not receive any preferen al treatment due to his/her status as a Yale student-athlete.

Can I pick up a student-athlete and bring him/her to work each day?

You may give a student-athlete a ride to or from work only if you provide the same ride to every employee in the same posi on. It is not permissible to provide special treatment to a student-athlete.

The student-athlete I employ played a great game this week, can I take him/ her out to lunch to celebrate?

No. You may not provide a complimentary meal to a student-athlete because of his/her status as a student-athlete. Unless the same benefit is extended to all employees under similar circumstances, you cannot take the student-athlete out for lunch.

The student-athlete’s team is doing really well this year and ge ng a lot of posi ve publicity. I have a big promo on coming up to sell one of my products. Can I create an adver sement, in print and/or on the radio, emphasizing that Yale student-athletes use and recommend my product? Can I use their names, pictures, or likenesses?

It is not permissible for student-athletes to par cipate in any promo onal ac vi es on behalf of a commercial en ty. You cannot use a student-athlete’s picture to promote a commercial product. Therefore, student-athletes may not be used to promote your product because of their status or success.

I am sponsoring a fundraiser at my restaurant for cancer research. When someone purchases a meal, all of the proceeds go toward cancer research.

On the day of the event, can the student-athlete that works for me wear his/ her Yale uniform and invite teammates to work as part of the fes vi es?

They are very recognizable and I want as many people to donate me and money to this cause as possible.

No. Student-Athletes may not par cipate in any promo onal ac vi es for a commercial enterprise, even if it is for charitable purposes. The employee’s status as an Yale student-athlete cannot be used to promote this event, even though it is for a charitable cause.
