Ray Tompkins Associates As another year comes to a conclusion here at Yale, we reflect on the incredible accomplishments of our student-athletes and coaches. We saw a number of records broken, team and individual accomplishments, and success stories throughout the year. The participation and support of our committed alumni, parents and friends is critical to their success and makes Yale Athletics a truly special place. The Ray Tompkins Associates Athletic Directors Fund addresses the top annual needs across all sports. Please consider making a gift in support of the RTA fund (instructions included on the back of this newsletter). Handsome Dan XVIII, aka Walter, joined the Bulldog family in November 2016

Yale Football Wins The Game This year’s contest could easily go down as one of the true classics in the 133 years of the Yale-Harvard football rivalry. Defensive back Jason Alessi batted down a fourth-down pass in front of the Yale sideline with eight seconds left to secure the Bulldogs' 21-14 victory, one that prevented the Crimson from securing a piece of the Ivy League Championship. The Elis registered a milestone win with heroes on both sides of the ball and on special teams. The senior class leadership and performance was crucial, but it was hard to overlook the impact of the Yale youth.

Champions

Women’s Sailing - National Champions

The Women’s Sailing team won its second national title in three years at the 2017 Sperry College Sailing Women's National Championships. The team was comprised of seniors Natalya Doris and Isabelle Rossi de Leon, juniors Claire Huebner, Casey Klingler, and KB Knapp, and freshmen Chrissie Klingler and Louisa Nordstrom. Although this group of seven sailors represented the Bulldogs, this victory was a result of the hard work of all 16 women on the team, as well as the members of the coed team. With the majority of the team returning next year, the Bulldogs hope to continue their suc cess in the fall season.

Heavyweight Crew - National, EARC, and Ivy League Champions The Yale Heavyweight crew program continues to make history -- even 165 years after it began intercollegiate competition. The Varsity 8+ edged top-seeded Washington in the grand final for the IRA National Championship. This is the school's first IRA title and fourth overall national championship. The Bulldogs have now won three straight EARC Sprints Championships, the first time in the history of the heavyweight rowing program. The No. 1 seed Elis, who won 16 straight dual sprints races, edged second seed Harvard by less than half a second, one of the closest races in Sprints history. Overall, Yale had a gold, two silvers and a second place in the petite final. That combined success gave the Bulldogs their third Rowe Cup for overall supremacy at the Sprints and the first since 1979.

2017 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Champions Most recently, the Elis capped off their perfect season at Gales Ferry. For the first time since 1996 – in the 152nd edition of the Yale-Harvard Regatta, Yale swept all three races against Harvard, putting an exclamation point on their perfect dual-racing and post season.

Women’s Crew It was a memorable NCAA Championship for Yale Women's Crew. The Bulldogs placed seventh with 96 points, their best finish since coming in sixth in 2010. It was the 13th top-10 finish in the last 16 years for the Bulldogs, who were the highest finishing Ivy League team.

Women’s Fencing For the first time in almost 20 years, Yale Women's Fencing finished the season ranked in the top 10 of the National College Fencing Poll. The women ended the season with a tie for ninth place at the NCAA Championships.

Track & Field and Cross Country 2016-2017 was a memorable year for the Bulldogs with success across all four programs. James Randon ’17, who was co-recipient of the 2017 Mallory Award as Yale’s top male senior athlete, was the first men’s Heps Cross Country champion since 1989. Frances Schmiede ’17, who shared the top senior female award this year, broke numerous records on the track and earned second team All-America status.
