YALE HOCKEY SPRING 2017 / NEWS
From the Association Dear Alumni and Friends of Yale Hockey, It’s hard to believe another season has come and gone! Thank you to everyone who came back to New Haven this winter for the Men’s and Women’s Alumni Days. It was great to reconnect with fellow teammates, friends, and coaches, and we are hoping to have an even greater turnout next year. The Yale Hockey Association has much to celebrate and to be excited about. However, events are not our only roles and responsibilities. The key goal of the association is to support Yale Hockey and engage with alumni and friends and try to build meaningful relationships with the program. While the most obvious aspect of that goal is fundraising (more on that below) there are a number of other initiatives underway that help to strengthen the program. One of these initiatives is our mentoring committee, aimed at helping current players with job placement, interview and resume skills, and career advice. We also have committees on communications and events, and welcome new members who are interested in being engaged with Yale Hockey. If you have interest in joining a committee or getting involved in any way, please e-mail me at brookscs@gmail.com.
The work of the Yale Hockey Association provides crucial support for Keith, UK, and all of the student-athletes who comprise the excellent programs we have all come to know. The funds raised go to the most critical needs of our teams. Namely, travel for games and scrimmages, team equipment, and recruiting the next generation of All-Ivy and All-American players. We need your help. No gift is too small. Every dollar counts. There are multiple ways to show your support. Write a check payable to Yale University and mail it to Yale Hockey Association, P.O. Box 1844, New Haven, CT 06508-1844. Or, visit http://giving.yale.edu to pay by credit card and be sure to select ‘Athletics’ and ‘Hockey’ from the drop down menus. And remember, all gifts to the YHA count towards your personal and class giving totals for your next reunion! Thank you for your continued support, Chris Brooks ‘06 Yale Hockey Association President
COACHES CORNER Yale Women’s Hockey Greetings, and a heart felt thank you, from New Haven! Your continued support of our program helped us earn second place in the Ivy League, a trip to the ECAC playoffs, and an exciting win against Harvard in front of a large and rowdy Ingalls crowd during alumnae weekend. The Yale Hockey class of 2017 leaves a strong and lasting legacy of growth and building. They also leave teammates who are eager to ensure that our program takes the next step. We will be led next year by our 41st captain, Kaitlin Gately ’18 and her classmates, Kara Drexler, Emily Monaghan, Eden Murray, Courtney Pensavalle, Mallory Souliotis, and
Grace Wickens. We also look forward to welcoming our seven newest members of the Bulldog family to campus in the fall. The words “You will never walk alone” hang on a sign in our locker room, and as coaches, it is enormously gratifying to see this sentiment play out everyday at Ingalls. But we also feel it from you – through both your unwavering and financial support. We continue to be grateful for your contributions to Yale Hockey. Thank you. Have a wonderful spring, and we look forward to seeing you back in New Haven next season! -UK

The 2016-17 hockey season was not up to our lofty standards in terms of our win loss record, however, there was much to be proud of and there are plenty of reasons to be excited about our future. We earned home ice in the ECAC Playoffs and swept Dartmouth in a hard fought series. Due to graduation and NHL signings we had to completely replace our defensive corps and our goaltending and the way this group grew during the season has me already excited about next season. John Hayden our senior captain had an outstanding year and has continued his season signing and playing with the Chicago Blackhawks. Joe Snively, last year’s Ivy League Rookie of the Year, continues to grow his game and led our team in scoring.
Moving on to the future, my expectations for our program remain unchanged. We want to be a program that sustains excellence, a program that consistently earns the right to compete for championships, and one that supplies our student athletes with tools that will allow them to be successful in any endeavor throughout their lives. We have a group of seven young men coming next season, four forwards, two defensemen, and a goaltender. Each of them brings a unique set of skills and each will fight for the opportunity to contribute to our team immediately. We have already started our strength and conditioning program and are working diligently to get Yale Hockey back to its rightful place among the elite teams in the nation. I would like to personally thank each one of you who has contributed to our program and made an impact on the lives of our student athletes. Your support is important to us and we are grateful. Hope to see you around the rink. Best, Keith
THANK YOU Over the past two years your gifts have allowed us to provide some wonderful upgrades to our spaces. Home to the men and women of Yale Hockey, the Wyper Family Student-Athlete Lounge recieved an upgrade with graphics wrapping the room - images showing the history and proud moments of Yale Hockey. Other upgrades included state of the art software and new strength training equipment. Thank you for your continued support!
