WINTER 2015

NOTE FROM THE ASSOCIATION Dear Alumni and Friends of Yale Swimming and Diving, As the fall semester closes in New Haven, the start of the swimming and diving season has left each of us with much to be proud of and a lot to look forward to in the 2015-16 season. The men and women of YSD are training and competing hard, breaking pool and team records, and proudly representing Yale against elite programs. A breakdown from the leaders of both programs can be found in this newsletter – and complete meet wrap-ups can be found on Yalebulldogs.com. Your participation in this association and the support you provide for the program have been equally impressive over the past year. Whether at home or away meets, the athletes need only to look to the stands to see a familiar face of one of the many supporters in attendance – which is a testament to the strength of this group. Gifts made by generous alumni and friends of the program allow the teams to compete at meets like the Nike Cup in North Carolina, which featured a number of top 20 NCAA teams. They enable the programs

to reconnect with a piece of its history and tradition by training in Puerto Rico this year. For those of you who were lucky enough to travel to Puerto Rico during your time at Yale you remember what an amazing team building opportunity the trip offered. We encourage you to make a gift to help the teams sustain the quality and caliber of Yale Swimming and Diving that we have all come to know, and to help the teams in their efforts to get to the next level. Our goal this year is to raise $175,000 and I hope we can count on you to include Yale Swimming and Diving among your charitable contributions. You can make your gift by visiting giving.yale.edu and following the instructions below or by mailing a check to Yale Swimming and Diving Association PO Box 1844 New Haven, CT 06508. Thank you for your continued support of Yale Swimming & Diving! Go Bulldogs, Matt Homer Meade ‘87 YSDA President

SWIMMING & DIVING /WINTER, 2015

COACH’S CORNER / MEN Hello YSDA Members, Welcome to the 118th season of Yale men’s swimming and diving. Currently the team sits atop the Ivy standings at 4 – 0 overall and 2 – 0 in Ivy competition. We opened on Nov. 7th hosting an improved Brown squad for a dual meet in the EX pool. Our team is young this year and there was some anxiety going into the meet, but a TIM WISE, ROBERT J.H. quick start in the medley relay KIPHUTH, HEAD COACH YALE and wins in 5 of the first 6 inMEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING dividual events calmed some jittery nerves. We won comfortably 211 – 89. The following Saturday we traveled to New York City to take on Columbia, a rivalry that has been extremely competitive for the last 10 years with each squad winning 5 dual meets. Columbia got a close win in the 200 Medley Relay by 7/ hundredths of a second, but we pretty much shut them down from there winning 5 events in a row and overpowering them with superior depth. Final score was Yale 190 – Columbia 110. The Class of 2016 wraps up their dual meet careers against Columbia with 3 wins against 1 defeat. The week before Thanksgiving we traveled down to “Tobacco Road” for the first time since 2008 to participate in the Nike Cup hosted at the University of North Carolina. This 3 day trial/final format gives the guys the experience of the Ivy Championship meet without the rest and shave… however; we did allow them to wear suits against this level of competition. We represented ourselves really well managing to win a couple of individual events (400 IM and 200 free) and beat Navy to win the 800 freestyle relay in thrilling fashion.

Dual meet wins against Boston University and the University of Connecticut this past Saturday gets us to 4 & 0. On Friday we will finish up our racing for the fall semester by hosting Southern Connecticut in the EX pool. If you have not seen the latest update in the EX Pool and the Practice Pool we have attached a picture. Earlier this semester we installed Omega starting tops over the existing starting blocks. These “track” style blocks are the exact same model you will see this summer in Omaha at Olympic Trials and the Rio Olympics. Thanks so much to Chris Bradford – Pat Dennis – John Hazelwood – Brendan Mulvey and Buck Smith for their generosity in making this project a reality. Finally, I would like to wish you all a safe and happy Holiday Season. TW

SWIMMING & DIVING / WINTER,2015

COACH’S CORNER / WOMEN Dear Alumni and Friends, The Women’s team has had an incredible fall semester in the pool, on the boards and in the classroom. It started with an awesome September foundation of training, team bonding and a commitment by all 35 student-athletes to a shared goal. There is great leadership by the 9 seniors JIM HENRY, ROBERT J.H. KIPHUTH including Captain Emma HEAD COACH YALE WOMEN’S Smith. Our early season acSWIMMING AND DIVING tivities created a strong and positive team chemistry. This was evident from freshman move in, to the pool party at the Henry’s, and resulted with the best month of captain’s practices since my arrival at Yale in August 2012. Yale Fall Break 2015 was productive. It started with the Alumni Interviewing Workshop on October 15th. The 25 women who attended were incredibly grateful for the useful information and helpful tips they received from Matt Meade, Alexis Lerner, Andrew Katz, Moira McCloskey Harvey, Jeremey Fain, Athena Liao. Many thanks to these alums for their time and generosity. We finished fall break with back to back scrimmages at UConn on Friday, October 16th followed by Johns Hopkins at home on Saturday, October 17th. We swam and raced well in both meets. Freshman Bella Hindley broke the UConn pool record in the 50 free winning in 23.20. Our early success had a lot to do with consistent training and good health. Our Ivy League season started early this year with Brown on Saturday, November 7th. The team did an awesome job getting off to a great beginning. They were aggressive in their racing and

won 15 of 16 events and went 1-2 in 10 of them. The home crowd was supportive and the team enjoyed the vibe on deck along with competing with the men at Kiphuth against Brown. The momentum from Brown continued into the Columbia duel in NYC on November 13th. We had many alums support us as we swam and dove to another Ivy victory. The women won 14 events and went 1-2-3 in 6 of the 16 events. The Yale 200 Free Relay team of Cassidy Richards, Kina Zhou, Amy Zhao, and Bella Hindley broke the Columbia pool record going 1:34.50 in the win. It was great to see so many alums afterwards at the team dinner. The highlight of the fall semester was a 3rd place finish at the Nike Cup in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. We had an incredible experience that will help us tremendously at HYP, Ivies, and NCAA’s. The team’s confidence grew with each day. We got stronger with every session. Having the entire team together to battle against some of the top teams in the ACC was tremendous. Thanks to your generosity in giving to the Alumni Fund we were able to compete with the best and it was valuable. The highlights of the meet include winning the 400 Medley Relay and 800 Free Relay, and the 200 Free. Eva Fabian and Cailley Silbert’s times in the mile have qualified for the NCAA meet every year up to this one. We will keep our fingers crossed. The team set 5 new Yale Records that include: 200 Free Relay 1:31.17 Hindley, Zhou, Zhao, Richards 100 Back 54.07 Bella Hindley 400 Medley Relay 3:37.77 Hindley, Kaminski, Zimmerman, Zhou 200 Free 1:46.62 Bella Hindley 800 Free Relay 7:14.91 Jameson, Zhou, Hutchinson-Maddox, Hindley Thank you for your continued support, Jim
