MEN’S COACH’S CORNER
A
young Bulldog squad is off to a good start to the 2015 campaign. The Elis are 6-3 with three upset wins, and all three losses coming against ranked opponents.
Yale started the season edging past Buffalo 4-3, then scoring convincing wins against Colgate 7-0, Monmouth 6-1, and Fairfield 8-1. 57th Ranked Iowa dealt the Bulldogs their first loss of the spring by the score of 5-2. The Bulldogs rebounded and continued their strong play at home upsetting George Washington 4-1 in the opening round of the ECAC Championships. An intensely close match, the doubles point was decided by a tie-breaker at #3, and five of the six singles matches went to three sets. #22 Harvard shutout the Elis in Cambridge in the quarter-final round of the ECAC 4-0 although the most of the matches were very tight. The following weekend Yale picked up a solid road win at William & Mary 4-2. After clinching the doubles point with a dramatic come-frombehind victory at #2, the Bulldogs then took three of the six singles matches, with one not stopping before completion. The following day Yale lost a hard fought match to #59 Old Dominion 6-1. Consisting of half the starting singles and doubles line-up, the freshmen contingent look to make their mark on the program. Ziqi Wang (Alabama) was ranked among the top 100 players in the country after the fall season and currently sits in the #2 slot in singles and #1 slot in doubles. Stefan Doehler (California), playing at #5 singles and #2 doubles leads the team this spring in both singles wins (7) and doubles wins (8). Rounding out the freshmen charge is Russian Fedor Andrienko. A crafty lefty with great hands at the net, Fedor is playing #6 singles and #2 doubles (with classmate Stefan Doehler). Andrienko and Doehler were down 5-2 in the deciding doubles match again William & Mary and made a remarkable comeback winning in a tie-breaker after facing match point serving at 4-5. The duo was also the only Yale doubles team to win against ODU. Sophomore Tyler Lu (California) looks to improve on his spectacular freshmen year in which he played #1 singles and collected 30 singles victories on the year. He is off to a strong start this spring with a 5-2 dual match record at #1 singles after winning 11 matches in the fall. Tyler is also in the doubles line-up where he has posted a 4-4 record. Alex Hagermoser ’17 (Illinois) played singles in five matches this spring winning three of those, and has posted a 2-1 record in doubles with Tyler Lu.

Sophomore Photos Photiades (Cyprus) is 1-1 in singles this spring notching a win against Colgate and dropping a close match at #6 against ODU. Big hitting junior Martin Svenning (Sweden) has played mostly in the #3 position. Martin clinched the deciding match against Buffalo with his 3-set win. Martin continues to play a big role in the doubles lineup playing mostly in the #1 position. The only senior in the line-up is Daniel Faierman (California). Daniel has played mostly in the #4 singles slot and has a 4-3 record this spring. Daniel also played doubles in five matches winning three. Significant injuries have plagued the Bulldogs. Senior captain Zach Krumholz (Florida) is still recovering from a broken ankle from the fall, but hopes to be at full strength by the end of spring break. Doubles specialist Matt Saiontz ’15 (Florida) suffered a career ending rotator cuff tear this fall. After posting a 21-13 doubles record through his sophomore year, Matt missed last season after undergoing shoulder surgery for a different injury. Junior Jason Brown (Illinois) is relatively healthy for the fist time in two years, and is playing very well. Jason could be a factor for the Bulldogs later this spring. Returning from hip surgery last year, sophomore James Ratchford (Georgia) is healthy, playing well, and is ready to do his part should the opportunity arise. Go Bulldogs, Alex Dorato

W. COACH’S CORNER
T
he Yale Women’s Tennis opened its spring campaign on January 24th against top-ranked competition at the ITA Kick-Off weekend. After strong individual performances in the fall, led by senior captain Hanna Yu (Northbrook, IL), who reached the singles and doubles final of the ITA Northeast Regional, the Bulldogs played #17 ranked Michigan in the first round of the event. Although defeated 4-1, the team earned strong performances from Yu, sophomore Sherry Li (Parkland, FL) and junior Madeleine Hamilton (Greensboro, NC). On the second day, the Bulldogs rebounded quickly, topping #41 ranked Utah to claim the team’s first ranked win of the season. The YALE WOMEN’S 2014 15 TENNIS TEAM WITH HEAD COACH TAKE BERTRAND FAR L AND ASST. COACH win against Utah also featured an MATEJ ZLATKOVIC FAR R exciting doubles performance from freshmen Carol Finke (Glencoe, IL) match to #16 Texas Tech, but played much better in its second round and S.Li, who secured the doubles point in a tightly contested 7-6 match against Tulane. In the Tulane match, the Bulldogs narrowly match. Yu, Finke, S.Li and Hamilton continued the momentum dropped the doubles point, but rallied in singles to push Tulane to into singles with a high level of play. the limit. Yu picked up another great win at the #1 position and During the Utah match, Hamilton suffered a small tear in her abdomen, sidelining her for the next five matches. We expect her to be back by March At the ECAC tournament, the Bulldogs suffered two tough losses from Ivy League foes, Cornell and Brown. Despite the disappointing results, many positives were taken from the event, including strong singles and doubles play from freshman Valerie Shklover (Fair Lawn, NJ), who went undefeated in singles. Finke again played well, notching another doubles win and two singles victories. Junior Courtney Amos (Tucson, AZ) had the opportunity to play higher in the line-up, starting at #2, where she proved her ability to be a key player for the Bulldogs for the rest of the season On February 9th, the Bulldogs hosted Florida International University (FIU) for its first home match of 2015 at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center. Again playing without Hamilton, the Bulldogs showed their depth by defeating the talented FIU team after losing the doubles point. Shklover, Finke, S.Li and Caroline Lynch (Dublin, Ireland) were victorious, and it was great to S.Li clinch the victory at #4. Yu also maintained her dominant form, leading the #24 ranked singles player a set and 3-2 before the match was abandoned due to completion. In the FIU match, the Bulldogs faced another challenge with junior Ree Ree Li suffering a minor back injury. We elected to rest her for the next two matches in hopes of having her fully recovered by the beginning of March. Heading into the prestigious Blue-Gray Classic, hosted in Montgomery, AL, the Bulldogs were without two key, veteran players in Hamilton and R.Li, but embraced the opportunity to have the underclassmen gain more match experience. The team lost its first

Shklover, Amos and Lynch continued to compete well. Freshman Elizabeth Zordani (Lake Forest, IL) also saw action in doubles and freshman Sunday Swett (Bow, New Hampshire) continues to do an excellent job challenging the team in practice and supporting the Bulldogs on the road. The team returns to action with two home matches against the University of Hartford and Fordham at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center on Mar. 11 and Mar. 13, respectively. Hopefully, R. Li and Hamilton will be healthy as the team moves forward. Our goals are to develop the players, strengthen team chemistry and continue to train hard prior to the start of Ivy League conference play. We greatly appreciate your continued support and hope to see you at our upcoming matches! Go Bulldogs, Taka Bertrand
