A LETTER FROM HEAD COACH ERIN APPLEMAN Dear Alumni and Friends of Yale Volleyball, The team returned to Yale in great shape, and it really helped our pre-season practices, and our early matches. We faced a really tough preconference schedule featuring matches against four top 25-ranked teams, including #3-ranked and defending National Champions Penn State.

Our goal was to get better every weekend, and we did, finishing pre-conference with a 2-1 record at the Cal State Fullerton tournament. We’ve had really good progression from everybody, including the freshmen, while dealing with a little adversity: We have had three unfortunate injuries early on, but despite that setback, the team has gotten better and found ways to win.

A big part of our success is our great senior leadership from our cap-

tain, Mollie Rogers, and libero Maddie Rudnick. They’ve been doing a great job making sure the freshmen seamlessly become part of the team, as well as being steady hands in guiding the team. We tend to think everyone on the team has a leadership role of some kind, but the seniors really own it.

Now we’re on to the Ivy League matches! We know that we have a very big target on our backs, but we don’t spend a lot of time thinking about it. Our goal is to get better every time out on the floor, and to only focus on what’s in front of us: the next match, which for us is this Friday at Harvard.

Can’t wait to see what this season brings us!

LETTER FROM THE ASSOCIATION Dear Alumnae and Friends, Though alumnae in some parts of the country might not be feeling it quite like we are in New England, fall is officially upon us! And it has brought another very exciting season for Yale Volleyball. Having worked hard through the early part of their schedule, the team is set to take on big competition in the coming weeks. If you’ve been following them, I’m sure you’ll agree they are coming together as a team, and are ready to take on the Ivies.

The alumni and association members are an ever important part of the team’s success. Last year a great group gathered to support them against Columbia, and I’m hopeful we’ll be able to do the same this year on Friday, November 7th. It really does make a difference for them to feel the support of previous generations of Yale Volleyball, so I hope you get an opportunity to see them compete in person this year.

Another excellent opportunity to do just that is coming up in Novem-

ber when we are holding our Alumni Day on Friday, November 14th.

The 2004 Ivy Championship team will be honored following game 2 of Yale’s match against Princeton. We are excited to honor the 10th anniversary of this incredible accomplishment!

Remember to consider Yale Volleyball in your annual charity contributions. The team has built a legacy of success with 6 Ivy Titles in the last 10 years and it is our hope that the Volleyball Alumni Association can match that. REAL TALK WITH MOLLIE ROGERS

enior Captain Mollie Rogers joins associate head coach Kevin Laseau in a weekly podcast, which can be seen on the Volleyball page of YaleBulldogs. com

What have your four years of Yale Volleyball been like?

My four years with Yale Volleyball have been amazing. I feel so lucky to have been able to play with such talented girls. I will forever consider my teammates to be my best and closest friends. Winning Ivy League titles isn't too bad either.

What does it mean to be a senior leader and captain of this year’s team?

Being captain of this team is such a great honor. It is so much fun to lead these girls onto the court every time we play. It is a wonderful way to finish off my career at Yale.

Tell us about Real Talk with Rogers: What’s your favorite part?

By far my favorite part of "Real Talk" is coming up with a new shtick for the show every week. Kevin and I always try to do something different and interesting. While the fans at home might not find it as funny as we do, we have a great time thinking up new ideas and filming them.

What do you think you will take away from the program and into your life after Yale?

The most important thing I will take away from Yale Volleyball is the value of a team. In volleyball no single player can win or lose a match alone. It is all about everyone being on the same page and working as hard as they can toward the same goal. I've learned that it is ok to rely on your teammates in tough situations, and that together a team can work through almost anything.

2004 IVY CHAMPIONS: 10 YEARS LATER

I

t has been ten years since the 2004 squad reeled off seven straight wins to secure the program's first Ivy League title in several years.

The team went on to win the 4-team tie-breaking playoff to get to the NCAA tournament and their first round match, the first time an Ivy League team had ever done so. This was truly a catalyst for the Yale Volleyball program, which has gone on to win five Ivy Championships. We hope you can join us on November 14th to honor this team and all of Yale Volleyball’s alumni.

Members of the 2004 team were asked for their fondest memory from that season and an update on where they are now. Here’s what they have to say: KELLY COOPER

JACQUELINE BECKER

At the end of a 6 hour interview with Google they asked me one last question: "What are you most proud of?" I answered 2 things:

When Wayne Freeman charged the court after Jana put down game point against Harvard. Definitely was feeling the love in the team dog pile. Such solid parental support :)

1. Making it past the 1st round of the NCAA tournament in 2004 with a team made up of my best friends in the entire world. We weren't the strongest or the biggest, but we had the most heart!

I'm a singer/songwriter currently signed to production deal and currently writing/recording my debut album.

2. Keeping my 1 year old daughter alive thus far In that order.

I live in San Francisco with my husband Ryan and 1 yr old daughter Kennedy (and another little one on the way!) I have been working at Levi's Strauss & Co. for the past 3.5 yrs.

boola RENEE LOPES In our playoff series, we had to play a match against Harvard & Cornell in order to win the Ivy Bid to the NCAA tournament. In our match against Cornell it went 5 games (always) and was really competitive. We were down in game 5 and we were in the middle of a long rally. There was this wild ball shot to us and someone dug it. The ball was shot up all the way into rafters & basketball net that was bent upwards to stay off court, the ball bounced around in there and somehow Jackie (I think) picked it up and we got it over. We won this rally and turned it around all together. My mom said from watching the match it was a turnaround moment. The energy shifted and we tied up the game and took home the win - giving us our first bid to the NCAA tournament!

ANNE MILLER One of the funniest memories of the 2004 season was all of the calls/texts (did we even text back then, I can't even remember) that we received before we actually saw the Minnesota team. I was hearing from friends about how very tall and large they were walking around campus long before I got to witness it for myself. :) There was lots of shock and awe in my friends voices haha.

I am now a trusts and estates attorney working in La Jolla, California. I live in Encinitas with my husband Michael and my two dogs, Monkey & Jetpack.

boola SHANNON FARRELL 1) Erin pulling Anja and me aside before getting on the bus after going 4-4 and losing at Harvard, and not so gently letting us know that we would be getting better and we were NOT going to be losing the rest of the year 2) Our marathon last few games of the season which all were 5 game nail- biters

Married recently at Lake Tahoe, California.

3) Hosting the NCAA tournament and having people ask me why there were SO many tall women walking around campus

Kelly, Adele, Christy, Jackie, Shannon & Anne will all be there from the Yale Volleyball team. :)

I’m a Physician Assistant in Neurosurgery at UCSF

I'm working for Athleta, a women’s active wear brand, in Strategy & Analytics. Funny enough, Elizabeth Bishop, our Outside hitter nemesis from Cornell, is working here too.

Sometimes we carpool and reminisce about those good old days. I tell her she had an incredible deep corner hit, she tells me that her team scouted out my slide. It’s pretty great.

Can I pick up a student-athlete and bring him/her to work each day?

You may give a student-athlete a ride to or from work only if you provide the same ride to every employee in the same posi on. It is not permissible to provide special treatment to a student-athlete.

The student-athlete I employ played a great game this week, can I take him/ her out to lunch to celebrate?

No. You may not provide a complimentary meal to a student-athlete because of his/her status as a student-athlete. Unless the same benefit is extended to all employees under similar circumstances, you cannot take the student-athlete out for lunch.

The student-athlete’s team is doing really well this year and ge ng a lot of posi ve publicity. I have a big promo on coming up to sell one of my products. Can I create an adver sement, in print and/or on the radio, emphasizing that Yale student-athletes use and recommend my product? Can I use their names, pictures, or likenesses?

It is not permissible for student-athletes to par cipate in any promo onal ac vi es on behalf of a commercial en ty. You cannot use a student-athlete’s picture to promote a commercial product. Therefore, student-athletes may not be used to promote your product because of their status or success.

I am sponsoring a fundraiser at my restaurant for cancer research. When someone purchases a meal, all of the proceeds go toward cancer research.

On the day of the event, can the student-athlete that works for me wear his/ her Yale uniform and invite teammates to work as part of the fes vi es?

They are very recognizable and I want as many people to donate me and money to this cause as possible.

No. Student-Athletes may not par cipate in any promo onal ac vi es for a commercial enterprise, even if it is for charitable purposes. The employee’s status as an Yale student-athlete cannot be used to promote this event, even though it is for a charitable cause.
