WINTER/2016
NOTE FROM THE ASSOCIATION Dear Yale Baseball Alumni and Friends, Despite the ‘late’ arrival of cold weather in New England, February 1st is upon us and can mean only one thing: the return of Yale Baseball. This is something we can all use to buoy us through the winter months. Notably the team opens up the season March 4th-6th by taking on the Aggies of Texas A&M at College Station. A series that will see them face top talent in the country and will hopefully garner your support from wherever you call home, or from the stands if you find yourself in the area! You can view the entire spring schedule here -- please be sure to Save the Date for Saturday, April 16th when the team takes on Harvard and we will welcome alumni and friends of the program back to Yale Field. In this newsletter you will hear from Coach Stuper and Chris Moates, 2017 Bulldog Captain, about the preparation and work ethic of the Yale Baseball team – something those of us close to the program are familiar with. I hope you will take the opportunity at some point throughout the season to catch the team in action either at home in New Haven or on the road near you. Your presence and support is an invaluable source of motivation and pride for the guys on the team and the staff. I also ask that you consider supporting the team with a gift to the Yale Baseball Association this year. Your contribution makes the program run and enables the team to travel, train and compete at the highest level possible. Gifts made by alumni, parents and friends in the last year have made serious improvements to the facilities, equipment and travel experience of the team. Thank you for your past support and for your consideration of a gift this year. To make your gift, click on giving.yale.edu and follow the instructions below or mail a check to Yale Baseball Association PO Box 1844 New Haven, CT 06520. Go Bulldogs!

BASEBALL / WINTER, 2016
COACH’S CORNER Greetings from New Haven: As I get used to the dropping temperatures here in Connecticut, I reflect back on my first 23 years on the job. I am not sure I ever thought I would be fortunate enough to be in this post this long. It has been a wonderful ride for me. As I look into my crystal ball concerning 2016, I am extremely optimistic. We have added another great recruiting class, one that contains two of the fastest players we HEAD COACH, JOHN STUPER have ever recruited, some guys with power potential through the roof, and arms that should be in the middle of things immediately as freshmen. I could not be more excited. I am proud to say in my time here that we have won two championships, four division titles, have two players currently in the big leagues, have had 40 players realize their dream of playing professional baseball, one scouting director, and a sitting Congressman.
We have been able to develop young men in an environment where they play Division I baseball, and receive the best education that is available in this country. But we aspire to high athletic goals as well. Our kids are dedicated to working hard and being a championship contender each and every year. Our coaching staff works like crazy to develop these players to try and make that happen. February 1st will signal the beginning of our first official practice. We all look forward to this time of year as we prepare for our opener vs Texas A&M. We will face the Aggies in a three game series March 3-5 to begin our campaign. They will undoubtedly be ranked in the Top 10 to start 2016. Quite a way to begin a season, made possible by an alum of ours some of you may be familiar with: former President George H W Bush. President Bush helped make this series happen and we are excited. We have other challenges on the schedule, including Navy, and of course our rivals in the league, beginning with defending champion Columbia. 2016 could be a banner year. Please follow us. Your support as always, is so much appreciated. We will do our best not to let you down. We here at Yale Baseball wish all of you a happy, healthy, and fruitful new year. All the best. Coach Stuper
INTERVIEW WITH CAPTAIN CHRISTOPHER MOATES Coach Stuper on Moates: “Helping lead the way for us is senior Captain Chris Moates. The big Georgian has been an exemplary captain, especially considering he is rehabbing an arm that was operated on this summer. He has truly rallied the troops and that is not easy to do when you cannot parƟcipate fully physically. He is on the same page as the coaches and has been a great ally.” What’s your outlook on the 2016 season? We couldn't be more excited about the 2016 season. We didn't have a great record in the fall, but I am opmis c when I think about this season because I have full confidence in the guys in our clubhouse to work their tails off to get to where they need to be come opening day. This is a team with awesome chemistry and a lots of talent, and I have no doubt we'll be able to tackle any hurdle that comes our way this season. How would you describe this year’s team in one word? Hungry What does it mean to you to be a captain at Yale? It was a great honor to be elected as captain, and one that I don't take lightly. It's encouraging to know that my teammates have confidence in me to lead, and I take it upon myself to set as good of an example as I can for this bunch. What are your plans aŌer graduaƟng? A er Yale, I will be working in Dallas as a Management Consultant for Pricewaterhouse Coopers. Best Coach Stuper memory? Lots of great memories with Coach Stuper. He loves bragging about how he lets his players team up and then singlehandedly beats them at Jeopardy. Probably the most special memory I have of him, though, is seeing how he handles the Newtown Clinic. Ever since the tragic school shoo ng in Newtown, Coach has had it on his heart to help be er the lives in that community any way he can. We take annual trips to Newtown to put on a baseball clinic for children in that school system, and it is always a treat watching Coach Stuper interact with the kids and brightening their day. You can tell that the clinic means a lot to him because he knows it means a lot to them.
