EXTRA INNINGS The Yale Softball Alumni Newsletter

Welcome to Extra Innings Dear YSB’ers,

The Lineup

Our freshmen are settled in, the leaves are changing color (albeit too early!), the Carol Roberts Field House construction is underway, and we have started fall practices! After having our best Ivy record since 2009 last year, and our highest divisional finish since 2007, there are new goals. The team is focused on one thing: Winning the Ivy League Title. They are doing everything (and more) to make this happen! The team returned in the best shape they possible could, and we couldn’t wait to start practices. This past Saturday was our first one, and we were able to jump right into “live” hitting. The sky is the limit with this year’s squad! The next several weeks are chock full of excitement! We have official visits, the City Series, as well as our traditional Yale-Harvard tailgate! We hope to see you there! Each year it has been growing, let’s break a record! More info will follow in the coming weeks. I hope you enjoy this edition of Extra Innings!

Fall 2017

From the Dugout

Bulldog Friends, It’s hard to believe another year has passed, but this should be the most exciting one yet! We have a strong group of 2021’s who will be following the very veteran team this season. We made some huge jumps last season, and a lot of that has to do with our offense! Having a full year with the batting cages in Payne Whitney has made a world of difference for our hitters. We had many more at bats under our belt by the time we got to our game in February, and our experience showed. We jumped past Dartmouth in the standings, finishing second in our division, our highest since the league was restructured in 2007! Be sure to follow our social media pages to get the latest on the Carol Roberts Field House, which we anticipate will be functional this spring. We couldn’t be more grateful for this facility, and everyone who worked so hard to make it a reality! Thank you again for all that you do. It makes a difference to our team every day! Sincerely,

CAROL ROBERTS FIELD HOUSE

The Yale Athletic Department broke ground on its newest facility, Carol Roberts Field House, Wednesday. Carol Roberts Field House is the first building of its kind at Yale -- a comprehensive space that meets the needs of two women's teams. Situated between Johnson Field (home to the Yale field hockey team) and William O. DeWitt '63 Family Field (home to the Yale softball team), the 5,900-square-foot building will include spacious locker rooms, a training room, a satellite coaches' office, a team meeting space and a second-story observation roof deck featuring a glass-walled event space. Carol Roberts '81 provided the lead gift for the field house. Roberts played field hockey and softball for the Bulldogs, winning a pair of Ivy League championships. Following graduation she joined International Paper, where she served as a senior vice president. She is active as a member of the Yale Field Hockey Association board, and in 2009, she received the Yale Athletics George H.W. Bush Lifetime of Leadership Award. Jen Goodwin, Yale's Head Coach of Softball, and Pam Stuper, Yale's Caroline Ruth Thompson '02 Head Coach of Field Hockey, were joined by the project management team along with Director of Athletics Tom Beckett and Handsome Dan in celebrating the groundbreaking Wednesday morning. "Carol's commitment to our female athletes is extraordinary. Her impact will be felt for generations to come, and the field hockey and softball athletes are beyond excited for the future with this facility in place," said Goodwin.
