The Mary Louis Academy
ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012
Spring 2013 Dear Alumnae, Parents, and Friends, I am happy to report that, through your generosity, contributions to TMLA during the 2011-2012 fiscal year totaled over $600,000. We celebrated our alumnae with wonderful reunions throughout the year, including the major spring reunion which resulted in a huge class gift to the Academy. These gifts enabled us to engage in many projects here at TMLA, including the rewiring and outfitting of the Art Cottage to accommodate our new Graphic Design course. Truly blessed in many ways, the Academy continues to grow and to thrive as a result of your committed support. In this Annual Report you will note some of the student highlights for the past year including a special section on the spirituality of TMLA which is integral to who we are as a school community. The vision and mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph continues as we work together to help provide a better world through the empowerment of young women. The theme for this school year revolves around “Building Relationships through Unity.” Your gift, regardless of the size, unites you with us as we work to educate women for the future. We count on your support. Together we reflect on TMLA’s magnificent past even as we celebrate her exciting future!
May God continue to bless you and your family. Sincerely,
Sister Kathleen McKinney CSJ, Ed.D. Principal Front Cover Photo: Stained glass window in TMLA Chapel depicting Christ the Teacher. In 1950 TMLA’s Alumnae Association donated this window in memory of our founding Principal – S. Mary Angelica Clarkin CSJ, Ph.D. -2-

“TMLA serves as a haven for the intellectual growth of young women. Everywhere I look I see women in powerful roles; they are bright, dynamic leaders. I am encouraged to be engaged – to be involved – to enjoy what I am doing. Classes here educate and illuminate. TMLA is also a place of great service, my involvement in the social justice program has altered my perspective on the world. TMLA is, in a few words, a perspective changer. Here, we are encouraged to develop our own opinion on worldly things, to analyze our set opinions and to refresh our minds with the diversity our school provides.” – Erin Krebs

“Mary Louis means a lot to me. It is my basis for going to college and I love the teachers and classes that they offer. I can honestly say that I’ve made friends I will have forever. I’ve learned life changing lessons and have become involved in the world around me. I love the Speech & Debate team because it has helped me to speak in front of large groups with absolutely no problem. I have finally grown and overcome my overwhelming stage fright. I owe it all and so much more to Mary Louis!” – Tamara Dinnall

The Mary Louis Forensics Team (Speech & Debate) has won the “Dr Francis Giordano Award” as the most successful speech team in the Diocese for the past 12 years in a row. The Speech and Debate Team at Mary Louis is one of the few teams that compete interscholastically througout the entire academic year - from early October until the end of May. Each year the team competes in close to 15 tournaments sponsored by Catholic, public and private schools throughout the greater New York City area and many of our students individually qualify to compete at both the New York State and National Championships.

“Mary Louis is the first school I attended after I came to the U.S.A. It is a close-knit school where I learn not only schoolwork but also how to live and study in a brand new country. This was a great challenge that I had to overcome but I received so much help from the people around me at Mary Louis. Teachers and students are all so friendly and made me feel like this is my second home. Mary Louis has literally meant a new world to me.” – Simin “Mindy” Xu

“To me, Mary Louis is a place I can look forward to coming to every day, a place where I can strengthen friendships and learn in a strong, encouraging environment. To me Mary Louis is a helpful and enthusiastic school that will help me immensely on my path to success. The Mary Louis Academy presents me with opportunities that I never thought were possible, and the lessons I have learned here will be applied to my everyday life, both now and in the future. Mary Louis is a place when I can be anything I want to be!” – Caitlin O’Brien

“The Mary Louis Academy is a second home to me. I know that it is a place where I am always welcomed and where people genuinely care for me. Mary Louis is a place to grow and mature, it molds girls into dignified young women. Every time I step inside this building I know that I will be learning something useful that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I not only learn from the teachers, but from the students around me who teach me how to be a better person. Mary Louis has an alive and vibrant atmosphere that you cannot find anywhere else. Learning is never boring here, and you come to know that no part of education is ever useless. Mary Louis is a beautiful place and I love spending my time here every day.” – Quinn Hurse

“Going to Mary Louis is more than just going to school; it is a way of life. Mary Louis has helped me value all of the important aspects of my life in addition to my education. Since it is an all girls school I have learned how strong women can be, and are. I have developed skills to be a true leader and woman of dignity. These skills will not only carry on throughout my college career but also far beyond it. I am so proud to be a student of The Mary Louis Academy” – Sabrina Bekios

“The Mary Louis Academy is not just a school, it’s a home. The students and faculty always have a positive attitude which encourages the students to do well and excel in our studies. The great asset to this school would have to be the sisterly bond grown throughout the four years spent here. At TMLA you can turn around and there will always be someone there to give you a helping hand. You learn a lot and really expand your horizons. What I appreciate most about Mary Louis is the fact that you know people care for you, you earn a true second family at The Mary Louis Academy” – Veronica Echeverri

A member of TMLA’s Swim Team, Tara Mulligan ’13, broke the Nassau/ Suffolk CHSAA record in the 50 yard Freestyle race, as well as winning the league’s 100 yard breast stroke championship. As one of the most successful swimmers at TMLA to date, Tara was invited to MSG Varsity for an interview on the High School Sports Desk. Tara was asked about her daily routine, how practice factored into her schedule, and her plans to swim in college. Tara stated “It was an experience unlike any other; to be in a real TV Studio; in front of a real Television Reporter was an amazing opportunity.” Tara is currently in the midst of her college applications, showing interest in Bucknell University, Fairfield University, Fordham, Loyola and SUNYBinghamton among others.

Mr. Louis A. Velazquez “Mary Louis is my second home, well actually my first home. I spend more time here during the week than any place else! I feel comfortable and safe here. Mary Louis is a school where I can get help with anything I need, whether it’s a math problem or something personal in my life I always know there is someone I can turn to and count on. Going to Mary Louis isn’t always just about academics; there are times when we have lots of fun; such as Spirit Week, the Walk-a-thon and Homeroom parties. Teachers make learning new things easy and I am proud to say that I do well in my schoolwork here as well as having lots of fun. Mary Louis is my home!” – Justine Persaud

TMLA Robotics has grown tremendously since its inception in 2009. This is due in large part to the dedication of TMLA science teacher, Mr. Vinod Lala, who serves as the program’s moderator. Another key member of the Robotics program has been Mr. Gregory Ronan, father of Vanessa (‘11). Mr. Ronan, an engineer, donated tools, supplies and countless hours of instruction which allowed us to bring the TMLA Robotics program to life. Vanessa Ronan, an inaugural member of TMLA’s Robotics Program, graduated from TMLA in 2011 and is currently attending Harvey Mudd College a highly prestigious engineering school in California. An additional moderator, Mr. Joseph Lipani, of TMLA’s Science Department joined the team in 2011. The TMLA Robotics Program builds a robot every year for participation in the annual U.S. F.I.R.S.T. Robotics Competition. The F.I.R.S.T. Robotics Competition is an international high school robotics competition organized by F.I.R.S.T. (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). Each year, teams of high school students compete to build robots weighing up to 120 pounds, not including battery and bumpers, which can complete a task that changes every year. Teams are given a standard set of parts and the game details at the beginning of January and are given six weeks to construct a competitive robot, that can operate autonomously as well as when guided by wireless controls, to accomplish the game’s tasks The TMLA girls have now competed in 4 U.S. F.I.R.S.T. Robotics Competitions, garnering a national 1st place win in the New York City Regional Competition. Team TMLA is made up of girls from all year levels, freshman through senior. The students and their moderators meet nearly every afternoon and even during school vacation periods researching, learning, practicing, building and more, all in preparation for creating their robots. Together the girls will design, build, test and program robots, apply real-world math and science concepts, research challenges facing today’s scientists, learn critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills and participate in tournaments and celebrations.
Robotics Team does it again!
TMLA is the only all-girls school with a robotics program in the State of New York.
The TMLA Robotics Program is now moderating a Junior Robotics Program comprised of 7th and 8th grade girls from the elementary schools in the area. Just as the TMLA Robotics Team was nurtured and guided in their first endeavors, so now the team is providing the same opportunity for younger girls. Under the guidance and direction of

“Mary Louis means a chance to stand out from the crowd and to truly be myself, it means being bold and showing that girls have power. TMLA teaches girls that we have the power to be whatever we want to be; that power is within us. TMLA shows me that if there is an opportunity out there for me, I have just as much of a chance as a boy in getting it. The Mary Louis Academy enables us to be strong and charismatic leaders. You are a person who is going to make a difference in the world!!” – Ashley Walker
