Annual Reunion Issue

From the Principal

Summer 2009 Dear Alumnae, Greetings from TMLA!

Principal S. Kathleen McKinney with Judith Williams Class of 1960. Judy stopped by TMLA to give us her old uniform along with notebooks from her classes with such teachers as S. Appolonia and Miss Lucas, and various Glee Club programs and other Mary Louis ephemera

This issue of Mariel-After brings you good news from Mary Louis. The pages hold updates on your sister alumnae, as well as news of the TMLA of today. We had a very successful year at TMLA. The Class of 2009 brought many honors to us. Their academic efforts were rewarded with more than $20,000,000 in scholarships to top colleges and universities. The Graduation Liturgy at Immaculate Conception Church and the Graduation ceremony at Queens College were beautiful and deeply moving events for all involved. All of us are very proud to send these accomplished young women forth as alumnae of TMLA. We are happy to bring you news of other alumnae in this issue. Much progress has been made in finding alumnae and enabling us to share their information in the new Harris Directory. We recognize that many of you have visited and registered on our tmla.org website; we hope that now with our new password protected alumnae section, more of you will share your news with us. All of this helps us to keep in touch and to tap into the experience of the wonderful women who have graduated from TMLA. As you can see, the TMLA from which you graduated continues to thrive and give witness to the mission of unity, reconciliation and all-inclusive love. I ask you to keep in touch and be part of the effort to keep TMLA vital and vibrant. God’s richest blessings to you and your family. Sincerely,

S. Kathleen McKinney CSJ, EdD Principal

A prayer service was conducted in the library consisting of readings, responses and the pronouncement of the dedications. As each dedication was announced each TMLA supporter came forth and lighted a candle. As the sun disappeared below the horizon and darkeness blanketed the evening sky, the light from the candles cast quiet shadows

against the library’s leaded glass windows and gothic carved stone trim. After the ceremony was over, groups traveled through the building stopping at each newly-dedicated location to pose for photos and to take a look at the plaques. Thanks to all alumnae who have sent us their memorabilia TMLA alumnae from all decades have been sending us wonderful memorabilia from their days as Marielites. Every item is greatly appreciated. Below we feature original uniforms from circa 1959-1969 when each homeroom had its own Apparel Secretary. We are still in need of uniforms from the 1970s & 1980s (tweed skirts, white blazers) and ephemera from those eras. We recently received a gift of a treasure trove of old issues of MARIEL from Susan Farrell ‘64 for which we are very grateful.

Above, TMLA senior, Brittany, wears a uniform sent in by Karen Piscano Bhayani ‘68, while at right sophomores, Danielle and Janelle, wear uniforms sent in by Patricia Schafani Brown ‘68 and her sister, Maureen Schafani Gillen ‘64, complete with hat.
