FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL
Fall 2013 Dear Alumnae, Parents, and Friends, Welcome to yet another exciting academic year here at The Mary Louis Academy. Through your generosity, contributions to TMLA during the past year totaled over
$600,000. Each and every contribution is appreciated and important. Your support
is vital to the continued success of TMLA. Without your support and collaboration,
we would not be able to continue to empower young women to become leaders in our ever-changing world.
In this publication you will see not only the names of our generous benefactors, but also items of interest concerning a broad spectrum of the TMLA Family. Articles
included about our current students and our alumnae demonstrate how wonderfully
talented and generous they are in school and in their communities. In addition, there are articles about some of the wonderful projects which you have helped to make a reality for the TMLA community.
As you enjoy this glimpse into the life of The Academy, I hope you see what a
tremendous impact your gift makes and I ask that you consider renewing your gift for this fiscal year. Your generosity allows us to continue to offer in every way the excellence that is the hallmark of a Mary Louis education.
Thank you so very much for your prayers and support. May God continue to bless you and your family. Sincerely,
Sister Kathleen McKinney CSJ, Ed.D. Principal

The Mary Louis Academy has inspired me to be a woman of dignity and to always strive for my goals. Attending this school has helped me realize who I am and who I want to become. The encouragement from the teachers and girls helps me to never be discouraged. They remind me to always try my best and work harder. TMLA’s motto of love, unity and reconciliation also inspires me to be unique. Going to Mary Louis has integrated faith and respect in my life. It has also taught me to make wise choices and to embrace them. – Diana

TMLA, A FAITH COMMUNITY The 2012-2013 academic year saw the continuing of many spiritual programs including our Selah community, First
Friday Masses, monthly Eucharistic Adoration, Communion Breakast and academy wide celebrations of Mass multiple
times throughout the year. Our liturgies were met with great enthusiasm and joy as we came together as one sacred community in prayer and worship.
The young women of TMLA serve our liturgical ministries by
assisting in orchestrating Mass, participating as lectors, altar servers, gift bearers, musicians and ministers of hospitality.
Last academic year 13 students were installed as Extraordinary
Ministers of Holy Communion to serve our community and their parishes as well.
Last year, we completed the second year of our “Sacrament Seekers” program. Throughout the course of the year six of our young women were catechized by Ms. Kim Scully,
TMLA’s Campus Minister, Mrs. Laura Rodgers, Chairperson of Religious Studies and Fr. Chris Cleary, CP, our Chaplain. The vibrant program enabled our students to grow in faith and in
community as they prepared for various sacraments of initiation. The program culminated in the spring of 2013 when our six
candidates received the Sacrament of Confirmation. We were blessed to welcome them into our community of faith.
11
New this year was a communal experience of Ash Wednesday.
A prayer service was conducted over the public address system and ashes were distributed by our Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.
Campus Ministry held a Church pilgrimage this spring to five churches throughout Manhattan; a new spiritual venture for
TMLA! Students moved from sacred space to sacred space on
foot. At each stop, the group prayed together, learned together, and experienced how various Christian traditions experience
faith. This wonderful and moving day ended with a celebration of Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Church. We hope to make this spiritual experience a journey to be had every year.
TMLA orchestrated our first MISSION WEEK! Kicking-off with our annual Communion Breakfast, Mission Week spread our
mission as a CSJ school and celebrated our spiritual roots for
five consecutive days. One of the highlights from Mission Week was our Prom Dress Drive. In just a few days we collected and
donated over 250 dresses to young women in need in New York City! TMLA alumna S. Mary Lou Buser CSJ ’53 returned for a
special presentation about ecology and we conducted a product drive for a CSJ sponsored organization in Brooklyn which helps
people in need of shelter, education, and other forms of support.

Mary Louis is like a second home to me! The young women here are all so warm and welcoming. Friendships bloom and blossom almost every day, and someone is always willing to share a smile. The young women here are like sisters; even though we are a diverse community filled with numerous different backgrounds, we come to realize that we are much more the same than we are different. TMLA is a home where we can grow intellectually, socially and spiritually. The camaraderie and companionship dwelling within these walls is priceless, even expanding into the outside world. Our missions and what we represent are clear through the actions of all our treasured TMLA girls. – Judie 20

To me Mary Louis is an oasis, a beautiful place of comfort and serenity. I feel at home when I come to school every day to learn with some of my closest “family members”. To me Mary Louis represents an all-inclusive community of wonderfully gifted, unique girls who have come to grow as students and individuals. As a junior here at TMLA my journey is halfway over; it is bittersweet. I know I will be prepared for the future with all the knowledge Mary Louis has brought me, but I will always miss my family here – Madison

Mary Louis is a second home to me, a home where I feel welcomed and loved all the time. Mary Louis is an opportunity for me to show my skills and talents, I feel that I am always in a secure, nonjudgmental environment. TMLA has become part of my identity and my life. I feel proud and privileged to tell people that I am a student of The Mary Louis Academy. TMLA is a place for me to come and focus on myself and my aspirations. I love Mary Louis just as much as my sister classmates do. TMLA means more to me than I can even express. It is a gift that I have been given; I know I will work hard to appreciate this gift – Amandeep Maureen Fennessy Cooney, D.N.P. 73 Alida Coppi, Ph.D. 91

Mary Louis offers a wide variety of educational experiences to broaden our knowledge. It teaches us to be independent, motivated and confident young women. The Mary Louis environment fosters educational values in girls going out into the real world to meet our futures. It gives a sense of security and guidance to all who belong to the TMLA community. Mary Louis shows us how to strive to do our very best and enables us to achieve our goals. TMLA ensures girls become leaders of our own communities. Ever since I went to my first Open House at The Mary Louis Academy, I knew that it was going to be a big part of my life. I could not see myself going to any other school. Mary Louis offered a welcoming environment filled with endless possibilities, I knew I was going to achieve great things! This school has taught me lessons of great importance and has given me the confidence to express myself. The way this school has changed me is astounding. I now feel that I have been given a great gift. TMLA is filled with endless opportunities! – Juliana

Track team champi ons The Mary Louis Academy’s Indoor Track and Field team had a championship season! The team won the 2013 Brooklyn/Queens Championship. The season produced four individual Brooklyn/Queens Sectional Champions from TMLA, five girls qualified for the New York State 2013 Championship and senior Aziza Hawthorne was voted the Most Valuable Indoor Performer. TMLA’s 4x200m relay team of Aziza Hawthorne ‘13, Angel Pierre ‘14, Stephanie Osuji ’14 and Mariah Howard ‘15 won the CHSAA City 4x200m Relay Championship and qualified for the New York State Indoor Track and Field Championship held at Cornell University.
Mary Louis is a school where you can express your thoughts about learning. When I say express I mean, we are all girls here, so we can say anything. We all can relate to each other in different types of situations. This school gives me a broad education on many topics, all of which will later benefit my future. My TMLA education can also be used to effect change, somewhere or in someone. TMLA is a good place for learning to connect to teachers one on one, in this school you are able to accomplish anything you dream of – Kurena 32
THANK YOU to our sisters
Coat of Arms of the Sisters of St. Joseph. The T-Square, sign of a carpenter, indicates St. Joseph as patron saint of the Congregation. The three fleur-de-lis are in honor of the Blessed Trinity, and also indicate the French origin of the Congregation in Le Puy, France in 1650. The griffin is taken from the coat of arms of Bishop Henri de Maupas, under whose episcopal direction the Congregation was founded. The six-point stars are related to the arms of St. Francis de Sales, special patron of the Congregation. Finally, “Congregationis Sororum Sancti Joseph” is Latin for Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Thank you to the following Sisters of St. Joseph, who through their contributed service enabled TMLA to defray the cost of over $1,000,000 in salaries and benefits during the 2012-2013 academic year.

THANK YOU for our ipads! The Mary Louis Academy continued our tradition of remaining at the forefront of education by introducing tablet technology to our students. Beginning this September TMLA issued iPads to every incoming freshwoman. iPads are tablet computers that are quickly becoming a popular and powerful educational tool for classrooms. This new technology helps to engage students and improve educational efficiency and standards.
At The Mary Louis Academy it is of the utmost importance to us that our students have
access to the latest educational resources and technologies available. The generosity of
our TMLA Family has made this possible. We would like to extend a special thank you to our Alumna and Trustee, Susan James Kropf ‘66, for her leadership gift which launched this project. We would like to thank all of the individuals who have partnered with us by sponsoring the TMLA iPad Initiative: Susan Rokee Allen 75

The Mary Louis Academy has become an essential part of my life; it has become my second home. I spend most of my day with friends and teachers that have become a part of my everyday life. The Mary Louis Academy makes me feel that the education I receive here has not only prepared me for college but also for all the major steps in my life. “Mary Louis has impacted my life and directs my future because it provides me with the tools and opportunities I need to succeed in the world. Through a good education TMLA is preparing me with the knowledge I will need in life. Through the options of Advanced Placement and Honors courses Mary Louis sets the stage for an educational situation where I can exceed my own expectations and challenge myself. The faculty goes out of its way to help us and to teach us the importance of love, unity and reconciliation. The Mary Louis community enables us to grow to become dignified women. – Katherine

REGION AL RECEPTIONS Over the last several years TMLA alumnae have hosted
regional receptions in Florida, New York City, New Jersey,
Connecticut, the DC Capital District, Maryland, Long Island, California, Westchester and the Albany Capital Region.
These events have proved to be a wonderful way for TMLA alumnae who live in the same area to meet, connect with fellow Mary Louis women and also learn about what’s happening at TMLA today. We believe the Mary Louis
community extends far beyond the geographic boundaries of our hilltop. No matter where you live you remain a
member of the TMLA family. We are all united by memories, traditions and a strong belief in the education of women of vision and dignity.
TMLA would like to thank those alumnae who hosted these lovely events in the 2012-2013 academic year. Joyce Zakierski Simmons 66 Sparta, NJ

The Mary Louis Academy volunteers had a hand in all of the relief efforts on the days we spent in the Rockaways. On the ride home each day, as we reflected, discussed and prayed together about our experience, it was evident that each member of our community who was with us was moved by the day. The devastation of burned homes and family businesses, the people begging for assistance and the worried but hopeful faces that we encountered throughout the day did not deflate our young women, but rather inspired them to continue to serve those devastated by the storm. They were eager to return to the places most in need, in order to help their sisters and brothers and to be the light of Christ in the midst of Sandy’s wrath. - Ms. Kimberly Scully, TMLA Campus Minister
In the fall of 2012 Hurricane Sandy devastated large areas of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Particularly hard hit in Queens were the communities on the Rockaway Peninsula and the neighborhood of Howard Beach. Thousands of people were without power or heat for weeks, many losing their homes or everything they owned. TMLA put out a call to the members of the TMLA Family to help those who were suffering, and as always you made us proud! We would like to extend a special thank you to the following people and businesses for their incredible generosity towards our Hurricane Sandy relief effort:

Mary Louis is a very nurturing community that fosters immense growth in knowledge and understanding. Since it is an all girls’ school TMLA allows students to be our true selves and be confident in our own persons. Mary Louis provides an abundance of opportunities for people to delve into their particular fields of interest. TMLA provides excellent preparation for young women to approach college and career life. Mary Louis is also a place where everlasting friendships are made, since the community generates unity among all the students. The whole environment of TMLA is very warm and welcoming and it allows all the students here to think of it as our home away from home – Christina

TMLA Students Put Malala Yousafzai on Principal ’s List Mary Louis means friendship to me. There are many girls here at The Mary Louis Academy; you create lasting friendships with girls from all different backgrounds and beliefs. These friends are there for you through the good times and the bad. Mary Louis also means hard work; we are prepared for college and real life. Even the alumnae come back to help us grow as Mary Louis women! It is so comforting to know that if you happen to stumble along the way there will always be someone there to help you, even after graduation. – Samantha
Each semester The Mary Louis Academy announces those students who have achieved
the highest G.P.A. for that term by placing them on the Principal’s List. This is the highest
academic honor that The Academy awards our students and last year there was one very important additional name on that list.
TMLA students requested to put Malala Yousafzai, the 14-year-old Pakistani girl targeted by the Taliban for daring to choose to go to school, on TMLA’s Principal’s List as their way of honoring this young woman.
Though just a young teen, Malala Yousafzai has established herself as a fearless advocate
for the right of all girls to receive an education. Malala was living in the Swat Valley, a region of Pakistan dominated by the Taliban. On January 15, 2009, the Taliban issued a formal
edict banning all girls from school. Malala defied the ban, and continued to attend classes
and speak out against the oppression she and her schoolmates endured. She was awarded Pakistan’s first National Youth Peace Prize, and became a courageous and inspiring voice for girls around the world.
On October 9, 2012, while she and her classmates were riding home from school, the Taliban stopped and boarded the van, identified Malala, and shot her. She recovered from her attack at a hospital in Birmingham, England. Malala still faces a long and arduous road ahead, the
Taliban has vowed that they will complete their mission and assassinate her.
Led by Seniors Michele Acosta, Catherine Muldoon and Bridget Nunez, and under the
direction of Mrs. Allyson Gutierrez, the TMLA Service Homerooms encouraged students in
Malala’s honor to take full advantage of their own opportunities for education. Each student
wrote her own pledge on a star that was posted on the display in the Main Hall of the school.
