FOREWORD Dear Reader,
Last year’s economic results and the forecast for the immediate future are not what we expected. We cannot be satisfied with what was achieved in 2012. However, we are not alone, the results posted by most of our competitors also followed a negative trend. Looking at our first quarter this year, we have to acknowledge that the results in some countries are below budget (or did not meet expectations). We have overcome economic turmoil and dealt with its uncertainties in the past. We are proud to have a strong global team, and we must continue to stay positive, work hard, and go the extra mile to keep our existing customers satisfied and strive to gain new business. We know this is not easy as pricing is under constant pressure and customers are looking to reduce their costs. In order to offer our customer competitive pricing, we are compelled to revise our cost structure especially in countries where we are behind budget. We need to focus our attention on competitive procurement, not only with carriers but also with all suppliers. We should aim to minimize costs related to travel, entertainment, and administration. We cannot afford the luxury of spend ing money which is not essential for maintaining and gaining new business. However, we also have good news to report; we have gained new large global customers with great brand recognition. We acquired a German forwarding company, Spedition Kunze, which gives us additional presence in Bielefeld, Dresden and Karlsruhe. This will further consolidate our German road business in an important part of Germany as well as increase opportunities globally. In 2012, Hellmann East Europe exceeded the Euro 100 Million target in turnover. This was achieved in less than 5 years and the development continues to be positive. The 24th Worldwide Meeting took place in March in Istanbul, Turkey. It was conducted in a positive atmosphere with record attendance. The next Worldwide Meeting will take place in October 2014 in Germany when we celebrate the 25th meeting anniversary. Times overall are definitely difficult and we realize that we cannot influence the global economy but we have a say in how we approach adversity; by being optimistic, dedicated and by working together. 24th WORLDWIDE MEETING, ISTANBUL / TURKEY SUCCESS THROUGH RELATIONSHIPS Michael Claus, NWHQ Miami
Following our last meeting in Shanghai and after a 1 ½ years break we held our 24th Worldwide Meeting in Istanbul from March 14-16, 2013. Almost 300 delegates representing 94 countries were present to listen to various speeches, pre-

sentations and updates from products and industry verticals. The remainder of the time was reserved, as usual, for our bilateral talks, which are extremely important and one of the major reasons for our meetings in the first place.
Istanbul, lying at the cross-roads of major trade routes and full of history and tradition, is an amazing city which appears to never sleep and many of our delegates appeared to hardly sleep either. It is a testimony to our professionalism and team spirit though, that no one was late the next morning and, looking down from the stage, everyone appeared to be fully alert….
The vistas from the hotel towards the Bos porus and the many mosques, churches and palaces were simply amazing and I am convinced quite a number of our delegates will come back for a private trip to Istanbul and it sure is worth it. No one has the time during the meeting of course, and the days are very long and take full concentration. In his opening speech, Jost Hellmann set the table
for our talks, indicating that no one can be happy or satisfied with last year’s results and that the first two months of 2013 were no walk in the park either. Like yours truly, he also stressed the importance of ‘relationships’ as one of the most important factors in our business. Without relationships, on many levels, we will not succeed.

We had many first time delegates amongst us, those long time partners and Hellmann companies, but also a number of new companies present, namely Solena from Cameroon, PSL Ghana, HIF Haiti, Somaci Ivory Coast, Alfa Trading Paraguay, and Hellmann in Thailand.
Worldwide Meetings are expensive, which is the reason why we now meet every 1 ½ years, instead of yearly, but it is very important to meet. Modern technology makes it possible to have video conferences, conference calls and fast communication at any given moment, so it is easy to stay in touch. On the other hand we are working in a people’s business, relationships, personal contacts,

friendships are major ingrediences and imperative for our success. We deal with people and not just email addresses, and renewing friendships and contacts are a must and well worth the investment. I would say, the delegates went home satisfied with the outcome and full of memories, action plans and ideas. It is now up to everybody to make the best out of it, work on what has been agreed and put actions in place, do what
has been discussed, because then, and only then do we know if this 24th meeting was indeed a full success.
Our next Worldwide Meeting will be held in September/October 2014 and since it is an anniversary (25th) we have decided to go back to Germany, as it is now 20 years ago that we had the last one there and not too many of us remember or were present. We will look into possible ventures and let everyone know in due time where we meet again.

PUMA CLC OPERATION CHILE – OFFICIAL INAUGURATION

After many months of diligent planning the operation went live on 8 May, 2012. We are now receiving, inventory keep ing, pick & pack, perform value added services and distribute to plus 140 locations within Chile. During Jost Hellmann´s visit in November of the past year we took the opportunity to officially inaugurate the warehouse/operation. The regional top management of both Puma and Hellmann was present. A successful event – just like the operation. We are presently working on new CLC opportunities...

The Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) is a coalition of leading apparel and footwear companies who represent over 30% of the industry’s global market share. SAC members promote a common approach to measuring and evaluating the social and environmental impact of apparel and footwear products. To this effect the SAC developed the Higg Index which enables companies to identify opportunities to reduce impacts and improve long-term sustainability through out their supply chain. We feel honored to have been invited to join the SAC as first Logistics company and look forward to partnering with industry members and associates on creating positive change. At Hell-
mann Worldwide Logistics we firmly believe that it takes an integrated supply chain approach to truly make a difference. For example, it is important that Logistics companies reduce GHG emissions but relative to the whole fashion supply chain, the improvements are barely noticeable. Therefore it is imperative that we collaborate up and down the supply chain to jointly improve the industry’s footprint. Hellmann will contribute to the SAC by collaborating on the Higg Index’s next version (due to be released later in 2013) and sharing experiences from implementing Green Services. For example Hellmann is planning programs to help apparel and footwear manufacturers manage waste, switch to alternative energy sources and choose more environmentally friendly packaging. “Transporting things from A to B is only part of what we do; our real passion lies
in understanding our clients’ markets and helping them excel. We believe that the SAC will play a strategic role in all of our fashion clients’ future and we want to be there with them, pushing forward toward a more sustainable future,” states Mark Hellmann.

Sri Lanka honors Hellmann with the 2012 Global Commerce Excellence Award Vanessa Segovia, Hellmann Hong Kong
On 13 December 2012, the Governor of Sri Lanka, Mr Nivard Cabrral, along with the head of the IMF, Mr Koshi Mathie, the Chairman of Ports Authority, Dr. Priyath Wickrama, and the Chairman of Airport and Aviation, Mr Prasanna Wickramasuriya presented Hellmann with the 2012 Global Commerce Excellence Award. Ms Tania Polonnowita, Manag ing Director at Hellmann Sri Lanka, was present at the ceremony to receive the award on behalf of Hellmann. The event took place at the prestigious The Kingsbury Hotel in Colombo and was attended by his Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa, President of Sri Lanka. The Global Excellence Award was handed to overseas partners in recognition for having supported Sri Lanka’s national economy and economic activity during the three decades of hardship the country endured. “We appreciate

the great risk and challenges your company took to be in Sri Lanka and support the people of Sri Lanka to move the economy forward”, Rohan Masakorala, CEO – Shippers Academy and Chairman of the Organizing Committee. Sri Lanka had been in a civil war from 1983 to 2006, during this time more than 150,000 civilians fled the island, it is estimated 40,000 people were killed and 294,000 were displaced. Today, however Sri Lanka has emerged from its 26-year war to become one of the fastest growing economies of the world. Hellmann had been doing business in Sri Lanka through its agent “Ceylinco Freight“ for several years prior to opening its own office in 2006, it now employs over 100 people.

For the 5th time already Hellmann has granted the "Carrier of the Year" Award to recognize our best shipping company partner. Like every year, both our colleagues and our sea freight shipping company partners were eager to find out who would receive the popular trophy. All Hellmann Seafreight countries voted their favorite, and at the end there was a neck-and-neck race between our best tier-1 carriers. In December 2012, we hosted a special Christmas party with the shipping companies. At this occasion, we have honored the winning partners with the "Carrier of the Year 2012" Awards. The ceremony took place in a small ski lodge in Hamburg and was accompanied by the best winter weather. The shipping company partners travelled from all over the world to be part of our event. We also had the great honor to welcome Klaus Hellmann, his wife Chen Si Hellmann and his daughter
received the Silver Award and Bronze went to MSC. Safmarine also won the trophy for best regional "Carrier of the Year" in Europe.
Similar events were held in other Hellmann regions, the other regional trophies: Americas has awarded Hapag, Asia China Shipping and Omea have recognized Safmarine with the regional award. Unfortunately, Maersk was not
among the winners this year. Like in previous years, Shipco LCL got the Gold Award again. With this award, we demonstrate our respect and appreciation for their support throughout the year. We are convinced that this gesture helps to differentiate Hellmann from our competitors. A number of KPIs are taken into consideration for this award, such as: global services, service levels, price (local and central), IT connectivity, top-level management contact (locally, regionally and globally) and proactivity/ reactivity. As we think globally, the trophy provides a good insight in the engagement of the shipping companies in the Hellmann network in the course of 2012 – from a local, regional and global perspective. The tier-1 carrier-adherence in 2012 amounted to 84% in Europe, that represents a fantastic result. It should be our goal for 2013 to carry on the good work and to actively shape our shipping company relationships.

Hellmann Coverage On Superstorm Sandy – Hellmann US Launches NGO Vertical Wiley Knight, Hellmann Charlotte
29 October 2012 - The largest Atlantic hurricane on record, known as Superstorm Sandy, plowed through the United States East Coast battering over 72,000 homes and businesses – reporting an estimated $65.5 billion of loss due to damages and business interruptions. Along the path of the storm were parts of the Caribbean, Mid Atlantic, and Northeastern United States. Sandy left behind a devastating result of 253 fatalities.
As reported by the media, the effects on New Jersey were more severe than in any other state. The 88,600 sq. ft. Hellmann facility located in Newark suffered from major damage including significant flooding, structural damage, and loss of electrical equipment. To ensure there were no interruptions of the supply chain, Hellmann US continuously provided cus tomers with optimal communication in light of the extreme circumstances. on the Hellmann website, allowing visibility to immediate updates. In addition, a support hotline was initiated allowing customers to voice any concerns receiving instantaneous responses from a Hellmann representative. On Wednesday 27 February, the Hellmann Boston Branch hosted a customer dinner to celebrate 25 years of operations and achievement. The event was held to thank our loyal cus tomers for their business and commitment throughout the years. Hellmann attendees included several of the Hellmann Boston Branch employees, along with HQ Management Executives including Roger Häussler, Arnie Goldstein, Ken Thibeault, Ron Hough and Jerry Levy.

On 12 February, the Managing Director, Oleg Sedov, invited all employees of the Kiev branch for a 5th anniversary party. All employees attended the surprise party. At this occasion, Natalia Vlasenko was honored as employee since the 1st day, as goes for Tatyana Lutsenko and Tatiana Dovga – both employed in the accounting department – for their loyal service in the past difficult years. HEE Kiev was founded in 2008 by Patrick Nathe, today the Kiev office has 15 employees. In 2012 they already achieved a turnover of almost EUR 2 million. In November 2009, the subsidiary was established in Odessa.

International Logistics Management & Leadership Programme Joanne Handley, Hellmann Osnabrueck
In February, Dubai played host to the third module of the second Internation al Logistics Management & Leadership programme (ILM 2). With Dubai being one of the main competence centers for Contract Logistics (CLC) at Hellmann, much of the focus of this module was on ‘Warehouse Management’ which included several field trips to our own warehouse facilities. As the group was almost at the half-way point for the programme it was important to kick off the third module with a reflection on our previous modules from a theory and personal development point of view. During this week

the group was joined by one of our resident professors, Nicholas Boone who introduced the group to basics in ‘Contract Logistics’ to set the scene before going into more details in week 2, as well as looking into how to analyze new market/industry solutions. Since the last module in Miami, the group members were split up into 4 project groups and asked to work on real life Hellmann projects given to them from the business. These projects included: • Global SOP format • RFID business case • Hellmann Integrated Packaging solutions business case • Set up vertical solution for Project Cargo
During the first week, the project groups were given the opportunity to present their findings to our professors, Madhav Kurup, CEO Hellmann Middle East & North Africa, and Global Learning & Development in order to gain some feedback before their final presentations to some of our IEB members in July. The week was finally brought to a close with a day on Leadership focusing on ‘Change Management’ with Tim Halsam, Lammore Consulting. In the second week, the group went into more detail on ‘Advance Warehouse Management’ with our second resident professor, Frank Giesa, before they then had a 2 day process mapping simulation with a guest professor from the Bundesvereinigung
past 5 years and where they want to take it over the coming years. The fourth module will be the last one before the group will have their final examination next year, and it will be held in Vietnam, in July. This module will be more focused toward consolidating and expanding their knowledge and preparing the group for next year’s exam. Between now and the next module the group members will start to work on their individual projects in preparation for the final examination, where they will have to present a project which they have personally worked on within their business area. ďƒ§

where they were able to work on a real life Hellmann tender going through all aspects of the requirements. We were lucky enough during this module to have a number of external key note speakers to give the participants a broader perspective on what Hellmann has been doing in Dubai and what the vision is for the future of Dubai. We would like to thank Steve Guiffrida from Ford Middle East, Jan Felton from Modern Pharma and Mohsen Al Awadhi from Dubai Logistics City. Hellmann Process Management established substance flow management in the Osnabrueck Zoo Johanna Holtgräwe, Hellmann Process Management Osnabrueck
The environmental services company, Hellmann Process Management (HPM), a part of the Hellmann Group has also supported a zoo to build a resource-saving waste management. What goes for corporations also goes for a zoo. Saving energy helps protect valuable resources and saves money. The Osnabrueck Zoo is also subject to economic constraints and therefore always interested in new energy concepts and ways to save resources. Over the past years HPM has proven that waste disposal has a great potential – saving more than a third of the energy consumption helps the zoo as well as the environment! The Osnabrueck Zoo is a socalled energysaving zoo. This means that a major part of the required energy for electricity and heating
is from renewable sources and that energy is saved, for example by insulation. As energy is not only necessary for traditional power consumption and heating, the zoo realized that it was time to take a closer look at the waste disposal, aiming to optimize the process both economically and ecologically. Being an expert in the field of waste management, HPM was asked to analyze the en tire waste stream in order for it to be optimized in a second step towards sustainability. With the collaboration, both parties aimed to reduce the disposal costs and optimize the container logistics and environmental protection. Using the analysis results, the zoo was able to achieve savings of about 33 percent in all positions! "By identifying the weaknesses in our existing waste streams, in addition to the achieved savings, the overall security of disposal could be optimized,"
explains Andreas Busemann, Director of the Zoo Osnabrueck. The Managing Director of HPM, André Pohl, pointed out: "As environmental managers we always aim to provide our customers the triad of sustainability in an accountable and convincing manner – so that economics, ecology and social responsibility are in balance. If we do a good job, the profit is not only for the environment but also for the customer as sustainable process improvements are made."

In October 2012, Hellmann Australia was the 4th country within the Hellmann network implementing RedPrairie as their Warehouse Management System (WMS). RedPairie‘s recent merge with JDA created one of the largest global software companies with combined revenues of over $1 billion, headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona. The combined organization will use the name JDA Software Group, INC. RedPrairie will remain an integrated brand with over 25 global offices providing service to 60,000 cus tomer sites in more than 50 countries.

The DC in Tullamarine migrated first In preparation to the Go Live phase, the Distribution Center (DC) in Tullamarine, Melbourne was defined as the first to be migrated. The DC has about 4,500 pallet positions on 4,000 m². For this to happen, all clients were separated into three groups based on their customer profile since the migration of the entire DC was split into three phases. Migration in three phases Phase 1 was led by RedPrairie onsite managing the initial set up and configuration. During this period the Hellmann Team was trained and familiarized itself with the product. This then led to phase 2 where Hellmann took the leading part during the configuration with support from RP in case of questions. After this cycle phase 3 then was managed by Hellmann only. This approach enabled Hellmann to build up the knowledge during this initial implementation which allows us to maintain and manage any further implementations independently from RP.

Implementation of RedPrairie The actual challenge was operating the old WMS for all day-to-day business while also implementing RedPrairie. For this to happen, warehouse personnel needed to be trained as well as new processes and systems to be introduced. Radio Frequency (RF) technology was introduced for the entire inbound and outbound process for all customers. Furthermore, the EDI set up between Hellmann and the existing clients had to be adjusted accord ing to the new specifications using our global EDI tool Tibco. After the successful Go Live of phase 1 the project team was already preparing phase 2. The project team would like to take this opportunity and give a big THANK YOU to everybody involved in making this implementation a success story!

The project started in the 1st Quarter of 2012 when Hellmann Australia made the decision to replace the current Warehouse Management System MasterStore with the Tier 1 WMS RedPrairie. The goal is to migrate all ex isting logistic customers nationwide, each of them with unique operational requirements as well as introducing new functionalities like RF scanning. This will allow Hellmann Australia to build up the systematical base for further growth with existing CLC customers as well as onboarding new clients. The Project Team consisting of Hellmann Australia, RedPrairie and the support of Hellmann Asia and Germany worked very hard to prepare for a successful implementation. The global Team BISS-SCM under the lead of Bernhard Menke joined this initial implementation
onsite over the entire period of six months supported from the local management. A big Thank you for this support which creates a huge benefit to the company globally.

Fruitlogistica Berlin is the largest annual Global Fruit Exhibition. This year the show had more than 58,000 visitors from over 130 countries and 2,543 exhibitors from 78 countries. The official exhibition sponsor 2013 was the country Peru.
During three days 25 HPL representatives from 12 HPL countries were relentlessly working at our stand, the halls and taking care of our customers and their business. Many new good quality contacts could be established and various new businesses were closed.

We have been closely working together with our colleagues in France to ship a race car to Mexico. Due to the strikes of Iberia and Air France, this car has been shipped with the KLM to Mexico. Our airfreight and customer service teams have been working together with our partners to book and deliver the car in good condition to the KLM ground staff. The car arrived on time for the race and will be shipped back via sea to Europe.

It was always meant to be – global IT finally joins forces Britta Kemper, Hellmann Osnabrueck
At the beginning of this year the two big IT areas HELIOS and Global Shared Services joined forces to become GLOBAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS). The GIS Team, lead by Sami Awad-Hartmann, ensures that our systems, with which we are handling our daily business (HELIOS, Hellogic, Hellas, Portal,…), are running properly and that they are safely integrated into our IT landscape. In the following article we introduce the GIS Management and its respective areas of responsibility to you. Infrastructure & Operations Thomas Holtgrefe leads the teams that take care of all technical conditions and requirements, which allow us to work with different programs and services every day. This includes the management and maintenance of our data centers, in which our servers are located which provide us with databases and applications. The data center is also the central hub for our networks that enable us to use our established systems (e.g. Hellogic, archive, mail). All hardware, connections and transactions are consistently being monitored in order to guarantee that our business processes are running safely and securely.

Integration & Architecture Sven Till and his team are responsible for the information exchange between the applications of our IT landscape and the connection to our customers and partners, with the help of EDI interfaces (Electronic Data Interchange). In addition, the team provides central compo nents, so that every region is able to implement EDI customers by itself. Furthermore, the team evaluates new technologies in order to simplify our IT landscape. In the long run we want to reduce the high number of systems we are working with. This will help us to create more clarity and transparency and to save costs, energy as well as maintenance effort in the future.
Business Production Solutions Sami Awad-Hartmann is leading these teams on an interim basis, which overlook our op erational systems and services and take care of their management, maintenance and further development. This includes the Portal for all employees and customers (who are using Track&Trace), the DataWarehouse, Hellas for road transport, Hellogic for Air and Sea freight, LFS for our warehouse management (CL&C) as well as individual logistics solutions (ILS/eChain) for customers who handle several products within one consistent supply chain with us.
Sea freight and our application developer (Business Production Solutions), Hans and his team then design the required Hellogic functions and modules. On the other hand, they are working on the further development of Hellogic and the transfer to a new technology under the name cargO-TMS.

Business Administration Solutions Klaus Fehlker is leading the team which was formerly known as Strategic Projects/HELIOS. This team is responsible for the management, maintenance and further development of our HELIOS system. So far, we have 38 countries worldwide that are working with up to eight HELIOS modules (at this point in time only Germany is working with all modules): CRM for sales, MDM for those who maintain master data, Core HR for human resources, Self Service, Purchasing (iProcurement) and iRecruitment for all employees, Travel Expense for a pilot group as well as FIN for accounting. In addition, the team is working on the implementation of further modules, e.g. Customer Service.
Product Management Hellogic/cargO-TMS On the one hand, Hans Helmkamp and his team develop and design the global transportation management system (Hellogic/ cargO-TMS) for our Air and Sea freight branches. Effective 1 January 2013, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics took over the freight forwarding company Kunze, with all of its subsidiaries in Bielefeld, Dresden and Karlsruhe (Karlsdorf), and all commercial properties. Kunze employs 470 people and has, together with the sea freight and project forwarding subsidiary S+L Forwarding, recently achieved a turnover of 82 million euros. Both parties have agreed not to disclose on the contents of the purchase agreement. In order to further develop their business, Kunze has been looking for a partner with a strong global presence ensuring a secure future for the company, its customers and employees. Considering globalization today, it was crucial for Kunze to strengthen its European and global networks by becoming a part of Hellmann Worldwide Logistics. The long standing relationship between Matthias Kunze and Klaus Hellmann and the comparable corporate structures have been key factors supporting the decision for both companies. Like Hellmann, Kunze is also a

privately owned traditional company, which was founded in 1927. For Hellmann, the territorial expansion in the southwest is a perfect match. The offices in Wittlich, Polch, Neunkirchen and NiederOlm are strengthened by the branch in Karlsruhe. The Bielefeld and Dresden regions are also strategically important for the expansion of the logistics service provider from Osnabrueck. The additional branches are expected to reinforce the domestic groupage business overall. Klaus Hellmann said: "I am delighted that we have successfully completed negotiations with Kunze. Hellmann Assists With Providing Aid To Mozambique Wiley Knight, Hellmann Charlotte
The beginning of the wet season in Mozambique has brought catastrophic flooding in several areas of the South African country. There are over 170,000 displaced people, 250,000 impacted and 91 dead. Hellmann Worldwide Logistics, in conjunction with our Kenyan partner Andy Forwarding and Hellmann Johannesburg, worked with the customer Samaritan's Purse to provide critical life saving products to the people of Mozambique. These goods were sent from the US and Kenya into Johannesburg where our Hellmann team coordinated clearance and final movement to Chokwe, Mozambique. The types of products shipped included blankets, jerry cans, hygiene kits and tarpaulins. The project spanned over two weeks, beginning earlier this month. Hellmann was able to coordinate holiday clearance and deliver these shipments in record time. Samaritan's Purse noted that until
Hellmann, they have never had shipments clear and deliver as fast to Mozambique!

The logistics of attracting talent Matthew Marriott, Hellmann Lichfield
When asked what they want to do when they are older, children normally say things like ‘footballer’, ‘astronaut’, ‘actor’ or ‘ballerina’. They invariably aspire to professions that offer a glimpse of glamour, a frisson of danger or the opportunity to be widely recognised in a variety of professional and personal contexts. Unfortunately, in the unforgiving realities of the real world, and particularly in an economic climate that has truly squeezed employment opportunities, there is more chance of Boris Johnson of seeing a unicorn than there is of finding that exclusive position that offers all the glamour, glory, danger, repute and excitement anyone could ever want. In fact, that job exists only in films and perhaps in the minds of the most idealistic fantasists.

Indeed, such expectations, apart from predicating a sharp reality check, can actually make it extremely difficult for certain industries to attract the talent that they require. I write this from the perspective of an industry that has to face up to precisely this issue. When was the last time that you heard a child (or indeed anyone) say, ‘Mummy, when I grow up I want to coordinate freight forwarding operations’? This might be a slightly glib way to illustrate the point, but the underlying fact remains: there is a serious gap in young people’s knowledge in regard to some of the UK’s major industries, and particularly logistics. Indeed, this is even more of an issue when you consider that, despite perceptions, logistics actually has a number of attributes that would almost certainly appeal to ambitious graduates; our industry simply needs to find a way to convey this message if it is to attract the top talent that it really needs. However, there are some quite serious issues to conquer first. In March of this year, PwC released a report that outlined a number of extremely worrying conclusions about the current state of the global transportation and logistics industry. They were conclusions that made clear that it is not merely problems of perception that the industry should be concerned about. In comparison to other industries, salary levels are low, while training and development is insufficient in terms of providing the type of opportunities employees might look for. Indeed, the report found that there was only a 36% probability that people will find the sector ‘attractive’ to work within by 2030. Translated into commercial terms this means that the industry needs to undergo a substantial overhaul to stay competitive in the coming decades. It is certainly sobering stuff. However, in the words of Klaus-Dieter Ruske, PwC’s Global Transportation and Logistics Leader, despite the ‘poor image, poor pay and poor prospects’ that currently choke the industry, the reality is that there are ‘rewarding, multinational opportunities out there that need tapping into.’ Quite! These ‘multinational opportunities’ might well be one of the industry’s greatest attributes in terms of drawing in talent.
And yet, this in itself is not enough; companies need to invest in talent. They need to really assess recruiting processes, and perhaps even more importantly, the systems that they have in place in terms of developing employees. Graduate programmes and management schemes cost money to implement, but not only do they offer the company the chance to develop the skills that its personnel require, but they demonstrate the sort of commitment towards employee training and wellbeing that can really help fight against some of the aforementioned issues of external perception. Those who come through company schemes and go on to have dynamic careers within the sector will be walking exponents and advocates of the logistics profession. It is an incredibly effective method and one that benefits the sector at every level. This is certainly not an issue that the logistics industry faces in isolation, but neither does that diminish the importance of taking action now and turning attitudes around. Children might not have to say that they want to grow up to be a freight forwarder, but graduates and young professionals really do – and it is up to those within the industry to make sure that is the case.

develop international relations, while bigger companies will have offices across the world. From the perspective of a young graduate, or indeed anyone looking to forge a career, this is often a hugely attractive prospect, providing a glimpse of opportunity and possibility that can be as aspirational as it is exciting.

We are glad to say that Jost Hellmann visited Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba and São Paulo on 12 – 14 November 2012. On that occasion we had a business lunch with our major customers at JW Marriott Hotel in Copacabana/Rio de Janeiro, at Hotel Pestana in Curitiba and at Vicolo Nostro in São Paulo. In Rio de Janeiro, our goal for 2013 is to get more involved with the Oil & Gas business, which has a huge potential in our market. We already developed some important local accounts and we are also developing this market towards other Hellmann branches abroad. Curitiba was founded in 1693, is undoubt edly one of the most remarkable capitals with the fourth largest economy in Brazil ($ 100 billion gross revenues), it has as its main points Logistics Port of Paranaguá and Curitiba Airport. From 29 October until 2 November, a Regional Training Kickoff meeting was held to introduce a Global Training structure to the AMCS region and was led by Sebastian Brockamp – VP Global Customer Implementation & Business Process Management. Country Managers and Business Process Managers from the US, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, and Chile joined the workshop discussions led by Anja Bartscherer – Training Manager AMCS. The purpose of
the workshops was to familiarize the participants with the training materials, improve the standard process for the shipment handling, and to plan the next steps on effectively training their respective countries. Global Training Vision: Uniting Hellmann at Local, Regional and Global levels, through training and knowledge transfer, empowering our F.A.M.I.L.Y to provide a level of service that rocks and exceeds customer expectations!

From 4 to 7 February, Hellmann employees throughout the US gathered in Miami to partake in an extensive OSHA training and certification course. The discussion topics included an introduction to OSHA, hazardous material

Ace Express makes a Bold Move Mark Tracey, Ace Express Dublin
Ace Express Freight has announced the acquisition of an additional 110,000 square feet of warehouse space to meet the growing needs of its customers, bringing their total warehousing in North Dublin to excess 300,000 square feet. Located on the M1 and less than 10 min utes from Dublin airport the new facility will hold circa 140,00 pallets when full. This acquisition reflects a vote of confidence in the future of the business. Commenting on the acquisition Managing Director Philip Tracey acknowledged that this could be considered a bold move given the current economic climate. However, it reflects the company’s strategic intent to be the prefer-

red supplier of choice within the logistics & freight forwarding sector. Coupled with this, the new unit enables the company to meet its growth projections for storage. As part of its service offerings Ace Express offer integrated logistics solutions and recent innovative solutions in the application of 2D bar code reading capability. Virtual warehous ing enables Ace Express Freight customers to focus on their own core business without having to worry about the physical shipping and storage of their goods. In addition, they have access to all of the movement information relating to their stock on line. Achievements in HELLMANN ARGENTINA in 2012 Lucas Mac Gaw, Hellmann Buenos Aires
I would like to share with all of you the story of the successful and challenging year we are leaving behind... Everything started back on 1 January when I was appointed to my current position. My team and I faced a not so optimistic scenario for the year ahead: Argentina´s government had just passed a number of import regulations which hindered the realization of our objectives and the world was coming into a financial crisis. In spite of the gloomy times ahead, we decided not to lay arms and instead to move forward so as to be able to achieve our goals. Successful achievements One of our major deals this year has been Yguazu Cement factory. In March, Hellmann Argentina signed with Intercement, a multinational headquartered in Buenos Aires city, a contract by which Hellmann Argentina is currently carrying more than 40,000 cbm from China to Asuncion, Paraguay. This is the most important investment project that has taken place in Paraguay in the last 25 years. One of our key vertical products, Hellmann Automotive Logistics, has acquired a stronger presence in the Mercosur area since Luis Gazillon took office as HAL Product Manager for Mercosur at the beginning of this year. This resulted in better commercial strategies between Argentina and Brazil and between these two countries and the world.

Hellmann UK announces new contract with Schoeller Allibert and partnership with Zufall Logistics Matthew Marriott, Hellmann Lichfield
New contract with Schoeller Allibert Leading logistics provider, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics UK, has announced a new domestic road freight distribution contract with Schoeller Allibert, the UK’s largest manufacturer of reusable and multi-trip container systems, in April 2013. The domestic distribution deal will see Hellmann UK deliver goods across the UK and Ireland from the Schoeller Allibert warehouse. Hellmann will also provide Schoeller Allibert with warehouse management control support, with the aim of optimizing the company’s supply chain operations. Matthew Smith, Head of Operations at Schoeller Allibert, commented: ‘Hellmann is able to offer a distribution service that is ideal for our domestic needs. We want to ensure that our supply chain is lean and effi cient, and Hellmann has a fantastic pedigree of providing exactly that. Ultimately, this is about raising quality and reducing operational expenses for the end user, so this contract is a great step forward.

In September of last year, with the extension of the CTL combination terminals on the premises of BASF, the opportunity to integrate our train system in this attractive location arose. Following the successful expansion of the CTL terminals, Hellmann could finally secure one of the coveted slots for the future handling of its train traffic. The terminal is one of Europe´s CTL terminals with the densest network of national and international connections in combined transport. Besides the potential the Mannheim/Ludwigshafen area offers, the new connection allows Hellmann to start offering numerous international rail connections in the future. Especially for Osnabrueck which at this moment has no international connections in combined transport, this opens up a new development perspectives. Since 2004, Hellmann operates an own rail traffic system under the name "rail solutions" and has built its own network in Germany. It connects the locations Hamburg, Bremen, Ha-
nover and Osnabrueck with five destinations in southern Germany. High quality standards and appropriate time frames allow Hellmann to successfully move goods from the groupage and the parcel and express market to rail transport. The recent developments make it possible for Hellmann to switch international system traffic to rail as well. Until now, the market did not offer any possibility for such clocked traffic. A lot has changed since Carl Heinrich Hellmann founded the company in 1871 as a one-man operation with a horsedrawn cart. But the unbelievable amount of parallels that still prevail clearly show how good the cooperation is”, explains Mario Blumenröhr, Global Partner Manager for Hellmann at Lufthansa Cargo. “Some time ago we looked into the matter and were able to find a similar strategic goal at Lufthansa Cargo for every letter in Hellmann’s DNA.” It was clear – both companies have similar needs and wants.

Hellmann’s customers include many well-known companies. Customers in the fashion industry place particular value on reliability and quality. And therefore Lufthansa Cargo was chosen as the carrier for this business.

Nelles sees himself as a facilitator between the carrier and original consignor, helping to increase future quality and performance even further: “I try to give our customers a basic understanding of the work of the carrier as the goals of both parties often differ greatly.” He gives eFreight and quality as typical examples of this. While Hellmann and Lufthansa Cargo are strongly in favour of the projects, he regularly encounters customers who can’t see the direct benefit of these. “Only when demonstrable errors are reduced by the eFreight system and quality initiatives will the doubters be convinced. We can work together to prove this.”

This award for sustainable logistics was handed over on the occasion of an award ceremony held in the Dutch city of Delft. With the Lean and Green Award the Dutch Connect Committee recognizes logistics service providers which have set a goal of re ducing the CO2 emissions by at least 20 percent over a period of five years. Night Star Express Hellmann B.V. puts effort into making the core business, overnight deliveries, continuously sustainable. This is achieved through the use of biogas vehicles as well as optimization and consolidation of the nightly distribution flows. The right posture for ergonomics Dr. Suzann Schmiegel-Kirschner
Today, more than twelve million people in Germany spend their time sitting in front of a screen and/or driv ing. If the car has not become the workplace already, our mobile society often requires several hours of commut ing, which are spent just sitting in the car. In general, people are nowadays sitting more than a third of the day on average, which is more than eight hours. It therefore makes sense that this article deals with the right equipment and posture for sedentary activities, even though the ancient Greek word ergonomics deals with the "laws of work" in general.

Obviously there is good and bad working equipment, like chairs, tables, (car) seats, cushions etc. But without the correct, individual adjustment of the material (chair height, seat depth, backrest adjustment, table height, screen position, light, steering wheel spacing, etc.) and the correct posture, even the most expensive chair cannot be beneficial to prevent long-term damage to health. There are a lot of sequelae caused by bio mechanical stress resulting from a wrong sitting posture, namely: According to the BKK Health Report 2012, more than a quarter of all hospital days in recent years had to do with back and neck problems. More than a quarter of all Germans also suffer from venous diseases such as varicose veins, thick legs, or thrombosis. No wonder, as the neck and back and also the legs are especially stressed during sedentary activity. Similar to the tennis elbow, today a disease named “mouse elbow” exists and is caused by con-
stant clicking with the mouse. Even carpal tunnel syndrome, an inflammation of the hand nerve (median nerve), thumb, hand muscles and parts of the other fingers, with pain in the fingers, hand, the arm, often up to the shoulder, can be a consequence of duration clicks. Prevention helps to prevent the syndrome: The wrist should always be kept in a straight position – not bent too much, still stretched too much – especially when working on the computer keyboard. In other work areas, for example in the warehouse, in order to avoid a one-sided, strong pressure on the thumb and forefinger, one should make sure any object is picked up or moved with the whole hand. Repetitive movements and work flows without pause and change of position should be prevented. This includes holding an object in the same position very long. The car is one of the main causers of back pain. The unilateral posture, the pressure of
The right position Chair Height: Beware of the contact to the floor, your feet should completely touch the floor. Depth: Between the seat’s edge and lower legs you should have about one inch space. Backrest: The backrest should be adjusted so that the lower back (lumbar spine) is supported. Table The desk height is determined by the position of the seat, and not the other way around. The height is optimal when the upper armforearm angle is 90 degrees, that is, when the angled forearm rests on the desk. Keyboard The keyboard should be 10-15 cm away from the table edge, hands and wrists should rest on the palm rest of the keyboard while typing and should not be angled in any direction. PC mouse The computer mouse should be positioned right next to the keyboard near the number pad. The computer mouse is to be moved from the elbow (not the wrist!), the heel of the hand is resting, hand and wrist form a line, the wrist should not be bent. Screen The top of the screen should be tilted back, the bottom edge should be tilted forward
A general advice for people who are sitting down a lot - whether at your desk or in your car: Sit dynamically. This means that you should change your position best every ten to fifteen minutes. Creativity is needed and lounging on the chair is explicitly allowed: Sit leaned back for a while, then sit straight again, lean on the table, stand up once every hour, make your telephone calls standing up, use meeting points for your meetings. Get mobile with the motto: The next position will be a better one, as by moving the blood from the legs in pumped back to the heart. If, after office hours, you should have time and energy left, it would be best that you avoid the couch and take a walk around the block. This will help you gain some plus points in the anti-seat-statistic.

Then there are the vibrations from bumps, engine vibration and tire imbalance which are almost completely transferred to the spine and can lead to headaches and neck tension. Foam or air-filled cushions can be helpful in this case. The industry is conducting research in the area of ergonomic car seats. But even if you are not blessed to have the latest model car seat, you can achieve a lot by sitting correctly in your car seat and having the optimal space to the steering wheel. There are also exercises one can do while driving to prevent complaints: Turn your spine to the right and to the left every hour, alternately stretch the right and the left arm to the car ceiling, also lift up the left and right front alternately. Walk several hundred meters during breaks and do squats to boost your venous pump in the lower legs.

Monday, 18 March 2013. A green office, beef stew, great Irish music and happy people. One might believe he or she is in Dublin, Belfast or Cork. However, the accent tells us a different story. We are in Toronto, the multicultural capital of the world, a city where the diversity is a source of strength and progress. Although the members of Hellmann Toronto do not trace their roots back to the Emerald Isle, we were all proud to be Irish for one day, or two.
