Landscape Assistant
BA Landscape Architecture
Greencube garden and landscape design is an award-winning company catering for domestic and commercial projects from small courtyards to large country gardens. The approach of Greencube is to encapsulate the customers vision, and develop the garden space in an inspirational, harmonious and exciting design. During the Summer 2016, I was employed part-time as a Landscape Assistant, working alongside founder and designer Mandy Buckland, BA (hons) Garden Design, MSGD; and RHS Level 2 gardener, Gemma Clarke. In the studio, I helped with the design process, presenting my own concepts and ideas, considering the opinions of the customer. I produced several planting and maintenance schedules utilising my horticultural knowledge. I created 3D Models of the proposed garden designs using Sketch Up and produced visualisation sheets for the customers. I completed Site Surveys for small gardens, using professional land survey equipment. On site, I completed many soft landscaping projects, planting, trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs. Working alongside Gemma, I helped maintain customers gardens, which included; mowing, pruning, weeding and feeding.
I am an Undergraduate Landscape Architect, studying at the University of Gloucestershire. Currently, I am a third-year student looking for a year out in professional practice, prior to completing my postgraduate diploma.

S.K. Landscapes & Maintenance Ltd | 2013-2016 Established in 1987, S.K. Landscapes and Maintenance Ltd is a domestic and commercial landscape construction and gardening company based in Bromley, Kent. I was employed as a Garden Assistant during my gap year, however, was soon promoted to Team Leader and became an adaptable employee working in the office and on-site. I skilfully used maintenance machinery, and completed my City and Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award in Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-Cutting and Tree Climbing and Rescue (QCF). The qualification improved my versatility and I worked alongside Orpington Tree Care Services Ltd. felling, reducing and removing the dead from trees. I worked in teams completing soft and hard landscaping projects and overhaul jobs; transforming gardens into beautiful spaces. As a ‘Team Leader’, I politely spoke to customers and managed my assistants. In the office, I planned the rounds, considering the designated amount of time spent at each contract and the required travelling distance and time. Working alongside the manager, Mark Hyde, I helped design the van and trailer signage integrating the company logo and contact details.

Freelance Garden Designer
PHOTOSHOP
I have been commissioned to redesign two gardens for clients of S.K. Landscapes and Maintenance Ltd; one of which is currently being constructed. As part of the design process, I organised meetings with the customers, considering their opinions and ideas. I produced concept ideas and mood board sheets providing inspiration for the customers which I could then take forward in the design phase. I completed hand designed and rendered masterplans with appropriate annotations, necessary for the customer and construction team. Where appropriate I produced a 3D-model of the garden design, integrating soft and hard materiality, ensuring the customer can clearly picture the design proposal. I have communicated with landscape construction teams, and discussed the proposal, considering time allocations and pricing. Completing freelance design work has given me the opportunity to work in a professional manner, taking responsibility and organising myself and those around me. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and received fantastic feedback from the customers. I regularly visit the on-going project, organising meetings with the construction team and taking photos of the progress.

profile...
vision...
I am a hard-working, driven young man, eager to learn, and strive towards a future as a Chartered Landscape Architect. From a young age; understanding and influencing the natural landscape has been integral to my development as an individual. My journey from a Gardener, Landscape Constructor and Tree Surgeon, to Garden designer with an interest and expertise in Horticulture, outlines my motivation; and vision for the future. I lead an active lifestyle and I am an all-round sportsman taking part in a variety of physical activities and regularly go the gym or embark on hikes or runs. My interest in sport led me to work as a football coach, teaching small children the basic skills in fun and interactive activities. I enjoy travelling and have visited a selection of countries around the world, exploring physical and human environments; encountering a variety of religions, cultures and lifestyles. I have a keen eye for photography and enjoy taking photos of the natural elements, particularly a variety of indigenous and exotic plants; when visiting gardens and travelling.
Landscape Architecture is a holistic term, incorporating aspects of design, planning and science. In a world that is in a state of perpetual change, my role as a Landscape Architect must remain adaptable. The philosophy of sustainability is at the forefront of the profession, integrating economic, social and environmental factors. However, urban sustainable development focuses on creating healthy communities through economic and ecological regeneration, which attracts affluent and environment conscious residents; and low income residents are forced out. The successes or failures of the projects are judged by their effects on the physical environment, not on whether they sustained the original community. This process, known as environmental gentrification, inspired my vision to reconstruct the biophilic human-nature bond; encouraging the natural world to coincide with the specific needs of a society and vice versa. In a world, controlled and manipulated by capital, it is the role and responsibility of Landscape Architects to incorporate specific interventions where blanket solutions have failed.

‘Learn your Plants’
Coaching
I have invented a plant card game, encouraging people to ‘Learn there Plants’ in a fun and interactive way. The card game has been designed for anyone with an interest in Horticulture however, is an ideal learning resource for schools, colleges and universities. I created the card game for the end-of-year show; laying the cards on black cloth, encouraging guests and visitors to enjoy a game.
I worked part-time for First Class Football, located in Tunbridge Wells, a small company coaching children aged 3-12. I enjoyed planning and leading classes, encouraging fun and interactive learning and skill progression. I had to be communicate and show authority when necessary to ensure physical activity was completed in the correct and safe manner.
Art Exhibition
Sport
Exhibition Piece
The Mick Jagger Centre | 2013-present I studied Art and Design (Higher) in the IB Diploma and my end of year exhibiton remains on show in the Mick Jagger Centre. The project explored the identity of human emotion, expressed through colour. I discovered the importance and range of emotion felt in sport and created a 3D-structure to symbolise and remember the emotions exploited.
Kwantu- Volunteer Programme
Kwantu Game Reserve, South Africa | 2013 I completed an 8-week conservation programme, volunteering at the Kwantu Game Reserve in South Africa. I worked alongside the locals at the Elephant Sanctuary and The Rehabilitation Centre. I completed many tasks, including; game captures, game counts, road maintenance, removal of alien vegetation and hunting for traps. I managed to witness the big-5; lions, buffalo, elephants, rhinos and a leopard; and helped to care for two white lion cubs. The programme gave me an incredible sense of achievement and lifetime experience.
Duke of Edinburgh Awards
Dartford Grammar School | 2010-2011 At Dartford Grammar School, I completed my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Award, which included a volunteering, physical and skills section and an expedition. For my Bronze Award, I volunteered at a charity shop, played football and learnt how to cook. The expedition consisted of a one-night, two-day hike in Meopham. For my Silver Award, I volunteered at a green-waste site, played rugby and learnt to play the guitar. The expedition consisted of a two-night, three day hike in Hadlow.
First Class Football Coaching | 2010
I am an all-round sportsman and competitive individual, taking part in a variety of physical activities and always willing to improve my skills in a new sport. I have played Rugby Union for Sevenoaks RFC and currently play for University of Gloucestershire 1st XV. I have played football for Sevenoaks Town JFC and Crowborough District, played cricket for Holmesdale CC and Sevenoaks District. I enjoy participating in a variety of racket sports, including; tennis, badminton and table-tennis.
Horticulture & Gardening I have a keen interest and expertise in horticulture and thoroughly enjoying visiting public gardens, which include; Kew Gardens, Wisley Gardens, The Eden Project and Rousham Gardens. Next, I would like to travel to Singapore and visit ‘Gardens by the Bay’, and experience the Super Trees and the conservatories, particularly Cloud Mountain. When not playing sport, I spend time gardening, including; planting, pruning and propagating; and have begun growing a variety of vegetables.
Travelling I have travelled to a variety of countries around the world; including India, Sri Lanka, Kenya, South Africa, Iceland and Cuba. The Golden Triangle Tour, in India, was an incredible experience, particularly visiting the Taj Mahal and witnessing the native cultures and lifestyles. I have been interrailing around Europe, visiting some incredible cities, including; Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Warsaw, Budapest, Ljubljana, Milan and Paris. During my stay in Warsaw, I visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, which was a nostalgic experience, but something I will never forget. Next, I would like to travel South-East Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

EASTERN QUARRY the dissertation...
project 01 | Jan 2017
overview... Eastern Quarry located in Greenhithe, South-East England is an expansive man-made pit resulting from extensive clay and chalk quarrying, and removal of Thanet Sand during the 20th century. The Quarry is an integral part of the proposed Kent Thamesside Regeneration Project, implemented and managed by Ebbsfleet Development Corporation. I have chosen this site as my Major Research Project, based on its prime location in conjunction with the surrounding land use; and to challenge the existing proposal, based on the philosophy of sustainability.
vision... The Vision it to transform Eastern Quarry into an Eco-Tourist Holiday Resort, integrating Biophilic Design. The holiday resort will become a leader in sustainable tourism, implementing green infrastructure and sustainable development to preserve and enhance existing biodiversity, manage natural resources and reduce pollution.
skills... The Feasibility Report provided the opportunity to explore the site context; completing a detailed site survey and analysis. The Report incorporated a Landscape Character Assessment (LCA) Report. I had to design in conjunction with the proposed development for the surrounding land use to ensure efficient function and legible circulation. Design Evolution Diagrams led to the development of a hand-drawn masterplan, rendered using Photoshop. Due to the dramatic topography and vertical cliffs, the graphic response included a series of sectional elevations and a visualisation exploiting the abundance of biodiversity.

HARDWICK public urban design...
project 02| June 2016
overview... Hardwick Gallery is the School of Art and Design at the University of Gloucestershire. The external space is primarily a functional car park with an eco-grid overflow car park utilised during gallery presentations. Located at the centre of the ring-road car park are two single-storey buildings in need of improvement. The car park creates a dull and uninspiring environment, juxtaposing the internal space utilised for the exploration of ideas and art. Vehicle priority with a lack of signage and lighting reduce pedestrian accessibility and legibility.
vision... The vision is to transform Hardwick Campus into a ‘Creative Hub for Collaboration’ through the development of social hubs, encouraging social interaction and collaborative intervention. The design concept integrates the radial-effect of a ripple of water, using soft materiality to create clear desire lines and functional space. The integration of water not only encourages relaxation and recuperation, but provides the opportunity to establish marginal and deep water plants encouraging an abundance of wildlife.
skills... Collaboration with Interior Design students provided the opportunity to share ideas and skills to explore the relationship between indoor and outdoor space. The entrance to the gallery was highlighted as a key destination hub, utilising glass to create a continuous flow between space. This provided the opportunity to create a glass atrium encouraging tropical plants to develop. Using Sketch Up I created a 3D model of the design proposal highlighting the potential for social interaction within a natural environment.
‘the creative hub for collaboration’
Established roof garden with a curvilinear wooden path which leads to an ampi-theatre, used for, lectures, presentations and performances. The roof gardens will be linked to the main Hardwick Building via a network of glass bridges. The new buildings will be transformed into state of art Fashion and Photography Hubs.
Entrance to Hardwick Campus has separate vehicle and pedestrian access to improve safety. Flower beds either side will be planted with a mix of evergreen shrubs and specimen trees. A glass wall will be used for security while the transparency will encourage function and circulation.

AUTOCAD construction drawings...
project 03 | May 2017
overview... The detailed area chosen for the Eastern Quarry Holiday Resort was the multifunctional space located to the North of the proposed site, at a scale of 1:200@ A1. The area focuses on the legibility between the entrance to ‘The Tropical Utopia’ Architectural Dome and the ‘Beach Front’, and the processional route following the Tram Network. Using AutoCAD Software, construction drawings of the detailed area have been produced.
the brief... The brief was to complete a selection of professional construction drawings which provide the blue print for development of the detailed area chosen. The required construction drawings include; 100 | General Arrangement Plan 200 | Construction Detailing 300 | Levels and Drainage 400 | Setting Out 500 | Planting Strategy and Schedule
skills... I completed a General Arrangement (GA) Plan, focusing on line-weights and hatches, to create an accurate and professional drawing. On the GA Plan, appropriate annotations and links to relative drawings, ensuring clear understanding for contractors and clientele. A series of construction sections and details, demonstrate the dimensions and materials required for development, using relative hatches were appropriate. An accurate level and drainage drawing provides clear understanding of longfalls and crossfalls while the location of the drain network is highlighted. The Planting Strategy focuses on the establishment of sand dunes, with a variety of rhizomatous perennial grasses and specimen trees integrated to stabilise the sand.

anchors specified, as a result of prevailing wind. Rootballs required. Rhizomatous Perennial Grasses are Clump Forming, however, spread by underground stems (Rhizomes), stabilising the sand and providing ground
cover. Unplanted Areas have been integrated to encourage access routes for users, without damaging the variety of flora specified. Perennial Grasses, Indigenous to New Zealand and Australia (Coastal Habitats), will have to be imported without damage to the roots or foliage. All plants to be planted at the required depth, as grown in the nursery, upright with necessary firming to ensure root contact and stability. Prior to planting, all plants to be watered-in to field capacity. All plants to be planted in pits large enough to accommodate the root area and allow sufficient area for the backfill material to surround the roots/rootball.
The Dunes Man-Made Sand Dunes to be developed with imported beach sand, with a corten steel retaining structure. Sand to be stabalised with rhizomatous perennial grasses and specimen Pine Trees. Ammophila and Sand Dune planting specified to ensure stability, function and aesthetics. The site is South-facing and exposed to a prevailing wind. Full sun tolerant, hardy plant species that require free-draining, sandy-loam soil have been specified to provide optimum growing conditions, ensuring successful establishment.

GARDEN DESIGN commissioned design proposals...
project 04 | 2016-2017
great oaks... Great Oaks, Chislehurst is a private property, sharing a driveway with Great Yews (whose homeowner is looking to sell up). The driveway is the property of Great Oaks, however, by law, Great Yews must have constant accessibility. Regarding this information, property owners of Great Oaks, Mr and Mrs Plassard require a design proposal for private driveways. The vision is to transform the existing community access route into, two private driveways with high quality amenity space. Where possible, existing hard surfaces will be re-utilised to limit material costs. Soft landscaping will be used to create natural screening, soften hard materiality and create aesthetically pleasing private entrances. During the design process, land ownership and the location of existing mature trees had to be anticipated.
cedar farm... Cedar Farm is a large new build house located in Cudham, Sevenoaks, bounded by horse paddocks with public rights of way. The open expanse of land is prone to the elements, with a strong prevailing wind and extremes in weather. The soil is mainly clay leading to poor drainage, and boggy conditions. Property owners, Mr and Mrs Francis, are hoping for proposed designs for the front and back garden, incorporating hard and soft materiality. The vision for the back garden was to create a multifunctional space, incorporating elements of work, rest and play. The proposal integrated function and circulation in a contemporary and stylish manner incorporating bespoke features and architectural planting. The vision for the front garden is to create a dramatic and aesthetically pleasing entrance. The proposal is for an open lake, with a rockery and waterfall, a central water fountain, island, decked seating area and an abundance of marginal and deep water planting.
A brick wall will create a defined bo between the two properties and w aesthetically pleasing feature of bo gardens. The wall will have regular and central wooden trellis or Wrou Black Fencing, encouraging climber Beech (Fagus sylvatica Atropurpure will provide a natural screening, an Autumn foliage. A large flower bed planted with specimen shrubs, per and seasonal bulbs.

Retain existing turning circle, using an Eco-grid, permeable grass paving rather than the existing brick paving. The turning circle will provide enough space for 2 parking bays.
A porous surface material, either Resin Bound Gravel or permeable block paving, reducing surface run-off and ensuring the existing Lime Tree (Tilia cordata) has access to a sufficient volume of water.

A Resin Bound Gravel Driveway with a Granite perimeter formed of two setts. The driveway will be extended providing enough space for an additional 2 parking bays, which can also be used for turning. The driveway will be softened with a flower bed planted with Buxus sempervirens, Lavandula officinalis and perennial plants.
Aqua Lens with 2m Dish, a contemporary water feature creating a central focal point with an exterior flower bed. Buxus sempervirens will be softened with Lavandula officinalis and perennial planting
Flower Bed planted with Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra and Fargesia nitida) creating a natural screening from the neighbours property. The flower bed is wide enough to ensure that there will be no detrimental impact to the existing Lime Tree (Tilia cordata).
Shared entrance formed of Tegula Block Paving with a perimeter flower bed of Bay Trees (Laurus nobilis) and Lavandula officinalis, topped with a contemporary gravel.
A LastaGrip anti-slip millboard decking will be used to connect the indoor swimming the pool, with the proposed outdoor pool or hot tub, via existing French Windows. The south facing deck provides the ideal opportunity to add sun loungers and deck chairs. The decking will be softened with sun-loving plants, including specimen Olive trees. Wooden trellis will be attached to the house, encouraging sun-loving climbers and wall shrubs. The existing patio will be transformed into a contemporary and stylish courtyard with a diamond sawn porcelain paving. Ragstone will be used to create aesthetically pleasing seating opportunities and raised flower beds. A central well will be the focal point of the courtyard, softened with Buxus Balls and, fragrant Lavender and Nepeta. Steps provide access to a lower millboard decking, which will be the primary seating space, providing panoramic views of the garden. An established pear and apple orchard with a wildflower meadow will encourage an abundance of wildlife. A perimeter bitumen gravel walkway will have a metal pergola, intertwined with a wisteria floribunda ‘Alba’. The pathway will provide access to the small vegetable plot and constructed glasshouse. Flower beds have been raised using oak sleepers to improve soil quality and provide optimum growing conditions.

The driveway will be constructed using a resin bound gravel surface with granite sett edging. The hard materials will be softened with perimeter beds, planted with multi-stemmed Betula jacquemontii ‘Greyswood Ghost’, Box Balls and lavender. A series of corten steel structures will provide lighting to the house entrance. A spherical water feature will create a dramatic and stylish focal point, perpendicular to the house entrance.

LECKHAMPTON environmental planning...
project 05 | May 2016
overview... Leckhampton Glebe is an open expanse of land south of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, located on the foot of the Cotswold scarp. The land is mainly used for pastoral farming, including; pigs, cows and sheep. The land also includes; residential property, public walkways, private allotments and residential playing fields. Leckhampton glebe is recognised green belt land with areas of ecological importance. The site and its context is vulnerable to development threat, notably large-scale residential proposal. The latest planning application has been rejected and locals have been engaged with the appeal process.
vision... The vision was to propose a Sustainable Housing Development Scheme integrating green infrastructure, renewable energy and a sustainable water management system encouraging multifunctional and biodiverse opportunities. A community hub, primary school and a Country Park with an integrated Nature Interpretation Centre must be included.
skills... The LCA (Landscape Character Assessment) Report provided the opportunity to integrate National, Regional and Local Planning Policies and Legislation; and LVIA requirements. Design Evolution consisting of; a Green Infrastructure Plan and Zoning Plan provided the basis for the development proposal, focusing on functionality and circulation. Action for mitigation was integrated to reduce visual and noise pollution, and improve legibility and robustness.

THE LUNGS OF LIFE chaumont garden festival
project 06 | Jan 2016
overview... Chaumont-sur-Loire Garden Festival is at the forefront of contemporary design, expressing creative and initiative concepts from around the world. Experimentation should be a significant aspect of the design process, striving for unique and dramatic spaces with inspiring narratives and meaning.
vision... As part of the design process, I came up with three concept ideas focusing on human destruction of the natural world; deforestation, oil spills and fossil fuel consumption. After presenting the narratives, I was chosen to focus on the theme of deforestation; incorporating the process and consequences. The Tropical Rainforest is considered to be the ‘Lungs of Life,’ which became the design concept. The vision was to create a dramatic and emotive space, exploiting the negative impacts of deforestation.
skills... ‘Lungs of Life’ provided the opportunity to design with drama and emotion, exploiting feelings of shock and nostalgia; rather than designing to encourage feelings of enjoyment and relaxation. Subsequently, the design incorporates elements of danger and risk that would not otherwise be acceptable. The masterplan has a realistic render further emphasising the severity of deforestation, while the page layout exploits the overwhelming power of chainsaws cutting through the endangered environment.
