TID BITS TRACEY’S

By Tracey Greene

European Adventure: A Castle, the Cotswolds and a Spot of Tea As my European vacation was ending, I finally got to see a little of the English countryside and experience a bit of England. It wasn’t the grand “touristy” cities that many have on their bucket list for England but a right amount for me to see why people so love to live there. Even though I was in Europe for 2 weeks, most of our time was spent in Italy. But, before my trip ended my brother and sister-in-law wanted me to be able to experience a little “taste” of England. As was the fashion of our whole trip, the day we got back from Italy, the whole family unpacked and repacked a small bag for our 2-day trip. It was a jam-packed itinerary just like each day had been for the two weeks. In my mind, to be able to say I “experienced” England, I wanted to make sure I saw a castle, had “real” fish n chips in a pub and enjoyed tea time. Very simple, I know, but with the little time I had left for this trip, this was on my short list. What we were able to achieve in these two FULL days was so much more… We started our mini-adventure leaving early morning to make it to Warwick Castle as it opened. Of course, the castle and the grounds are now a tourist destination, however, looking past the shows and knickknacks, the castle is greatly preserved and the interior scenes depicting the way people would have interacted inside was very real and based on the life of one of its last owners. The castle was built in 1068 and sits on the side of the River Avon – such a beautiful lush area. The part that I loved was the history of each King or Queen, Conqueror or wealthy family that took possession of the castle over the almost thousand years. After we toured the castle, we set off on foot around the town – cobblestone streets, enjoying the architecture of the area. We came across a little pub that we enjoyed a lovely lunch as well as a pint or two of beer. Next it was off to Cheltenham, a town on the edge of the Cotswolds, where we would stay for the evening before continuing onward with our whirlwind adventure. My sister-in-law took a chance on booking a house for the night –

and she hit it out-of-the-ball-park! It was so nice and comfortable, we all wished we could have stayed an extra night – plus it was in perfect position for walking around the town. Cheltenham was very beautiful with lots of flowers and flower baskets hanging all over the area – even though in a two-week dry, hot spell it was still lovely. There was also a nice meeting of the old very regal architecture and the new trendier restaurants and shops. One of my favorite prominent sculptures was Neptune’s Fountain set in the Promenade. Built in 1893, it is a very large focal piece of art. We had a nice patio-side dinner at a centrally located restaurant so that we could continue to enjoy the views of the town. The next morning, the girls got dressed for “tea time”. We found a wonderful older tea room, Well Walk, to enjoy a proper tea. It’s a family-run traditional tea room packed full of antiques and knickknacks – so many treasures that you’re not sure where to look first. Fun fact, they also did prop rentals for some of the Harry Potter movies…I loved the tea, the ornate heavy tea pots and all of the sandwiches, scones and sweets you could want. The name Well Walk comes from it being the path that was walked to get to the well… As we were leaving the tea room, we met a couple that were also American. The retired couple lives in Tennessee but also has a home in one of the “villages” where they stay four months out of the year. They congratulated us on finding, in their opinion, one of the best tea rooms in the area. This chance meeting leads us on our next impromptu adventure on our way to see Shakespeare’s birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon. Up until now, we were loosely on a schedule. Now only did they set us on the path to visit many little villages in the Cotswolds, but they gave us directions to their home so that we could enjoy its beauty, too. Unbelievable, the Tudor homes, the hill sides, the ancient cemeteries and nine hundred-year-old churches. The road side pub we popped in to enjoy another pint along with the views. The sites we saw, the beauty we took in – was amazing. To the couple we

met, this chance meeting – I say thank you for helping us see another part of an area we would have been ignorant of. And, of course, their modest little home was a slice of Heaven with well-manicured gardens better than most. A perfectly placed sign said. “Ruth’s Garden, Welcome All Friends”. I could see why they wanted to share its beauty with us. I saw love, peace and contentment on their property. Last stop of this whirl-wind day, Stratford-upon-Avon. The birthplace of Shakespeare. Even though it is another very touristy place, his home – one of four in the area, was enormous. The area was very quaint even in the hustle and bustle of the many people. We enjoyed dining at The Garrick Inn – Stratford’s oldest pub. I ate bangers and mash and enjoyed a traditional English drink – Pimm’s. Very refreshing. The Garrick Inn was quite interesting with a long history. It had a sign at the entrance with all owners of the building along with what their business was related to back as far as 1446. And, what pub would be complete without a ghost story or two…this was a great way to end our long day. And so, my adven-

ture is coming to a close as we took the 3-hour drive back to the air force base that my family is living on. Will I make it back before they depart in 2020? Who knows…but our vacation was jam packed. Photos can never do these trips the justice they deserve however it will be burned into my happy memories for a life-time. This I learned, letting the adventure lead us instead of sticking to a strict schedule was the best adventure of all! NOVEMBER 2018

KISS ME, KATE

Music/Lyrics by Cole Porter. Adapted from the book by Samuel and Bella Spewack. Directed by Paul Bawek; Musical direction by Bradley Vieth. With romance, comedy, sophistication, and behindthe-scenes hijinks, Tony Award winning musical Kiss Me, Kate

combines the irreverent humor of two brilliant writers, Cole Porter and William Shakespeare. Musical numbers include “Another Op’nin – Another Show,” “Always True to You In My Fashion,” “I Hate Men,” “Wunderbar,” and “Brush up Your Shakespeare.”

Support Our Vets Not Flightless Jets Several summers ago, during the Fourth of July, I saw a homeless man on the side of the road. His cardboard sign said he was a veteran who needed money for food. These sights aren’t uncommon, but they’re ironic during a holiday when we’re supposed to reflect upon our country and the people who fought for it. It’ll especially be ironic this month on Veteran’s Day. We insist our country is great because of our freedom, and yet many of the people who fought for that freedom go homeless and hungry. How does that make our country great? According to The National Coalition For The Homeless, veterans make up 23 percent of the overall homeless population and 33 percent of the male homeless population. It’s not like we don’t have the money to help them. America spends $611 billion on our military. That’s more than the next seven countries combined, including both China and Russia. And yet instead of using that money to help those who served in our military, we waste it on stuff we don’t need. Take the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. This fighter jet was supposed to be the world’s most advanced. There’s only one problem: it can’t fly! Well, it can fly, but only in sunny weather. It can’t fly in the rain, or in high winds, or even at night. It’s so slow that it lost a race to a 40-yearold F-16. And it crashed during its first ever combat mission last month. The worst part? Each plane costs $85 million. The entire project costs more than $400 billion, and it’s expected to spend up to $1 trillion during its lifespan. Meanwhile, there are approximately 39,471 homeless veterans across the country. The average cost of building a house is $290,091. Therefore, building each vet a new home would cost us more than $11

SIGN UP FOR OUR NEW WEEKLY EMAIL NEWSLETTER AT WWW.TODAYANDTONIGHT.COM

billion. And that’s only if we give them moderate-sized houses. If each house cost $600,000, that would cost us more than $23 billion. It’s cheaper to build vets mansions than it is to build planes that can’t fly! Even if you think we need to spend a lot on our military to keep it strong, consider this: nearly twothirds of our navy’s fighter jets are grounded because there isn’t enough money to fix them. Why are we wasting money building new planes that can’t fly when we have so many old planes that can fly but can’t because we can’t fix them? If we scrapped the F-35 program, we could give every homeless vet a mansion and have enough money left over to repair our existing air fleet. We Americans claim to love our veterans, yet we only seem to care about them when we’re using them to deflect criticism of our government. Colin Kaepernick receives hate for kneeling during the national anthem. Apparently, him protesting police brutality is far worse than the actual police brutality he’s protesting. His detractors claim he’s ‘disrespecting’ the freedom that the flag represents and the people who gave their lives protecting that freedom. But doesn’t that freedom include the right to protest? The very right he’s exercising by kneeling during the anthem? Last time I checked, exercising your rights isn’t disrespectful to the people who sacrificed for those rights. You know what is disrespectful? Allowing those people who sacrificed so much to suffer in homelessness! Do you love our veterans? Then stop complaining about the kneeling football player and start demanding that our government actually take care of them. They deserve better! QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS Info@todayandtonight.com NOVEMBER 2018

cheese. If you’re not in a mood for a sandwich, you’re sure to find something to like from their diverse menu of fresh homemade salads, soups, burgers, seafood, and appetizers. “I love how they have lots of soup choices like thick and creamy, light broths or hearty,” wrote one local Yelp reviewer. “Most deli’s [sic] don’t offer fried foods but here you can fill your cravings with fried pickles, tater tots, cheese sticks, mushrooms, and much more!” Those with special dietary needs, be it gluten-free or for a special diet like Keto, are certain to have their dishes prepared in a way that helps meet those needs as well as their taste buds. “We have been through the menu to see what we can change,” said owner Sammy Decker. “It is a very extensive menu...We have a little bit of everything for everybody.” Decker had been working at the deli for the past eight years, working the first four years under the original owners before they moved to Buffalo and left the restaurant in her care.

14 NOVEMBER 2018

Italian melt with French fries

She had previously had 18 years of restaurant experience working at Beef O’Brady’s as a server and bartender, so actually owning and running her own restaurant was a real step up in her career. “I never in my life thought that I would own or open a restaurant,” she said. “So when the opportunity presented itself, we decided to open a restaurant, and it has been ours for four years now.” When I asked her (during my visit there enjoying their Italian Melt) about what customers love about her restaurant, two ladies turned to us and said, “everything!” That sentiment about sums up the overall appeal of this tiny little deli. Everyone has the opportunity to have anything they want served exactly how they want it. “What we are all about is making everybody’s individual experience [satisfying] and making their experience unique, and treating everybody like family,” Decker said. “We love to go above and beyond for people and make everyone feel special like we are a part of the

family.” Another Yelp reviewer mentioned how they fell in love with the place upon moving to Lakeland from Daytona Beach a month ago, and how it’s since become their favorite place to have lunch. “Great food and over the top friendly service makes this a lunch spot of choice for me,” they said. “It’s easy to see why they are so highly rated!” Decker hopes to tighten up the menu in the future to help simplify the options. As to opening a second location, she has considered it, but she plans on remaining in the current location to ensure it continues to offer the consistency they have become well-known for. “We do everything with love and care. We go above and beyond for our customers, we like to make each experience a unique one, paying attention to every last little detail, making people feel special and welcome, and make it all appealing.” The Purple Onion is located at: 316 N Kentucky Ave, Lakeland, FL 33801. ost college freshmen are still trying to figure out what they

want to do with their life. Kenzie Wheeler, 20, has not only achieved what he wanted, but wants to reach high and go even further. Over the past three years, this Plant City native has achieved country star fame by participating in talent competitions and opening for big name musicians. Now one year after high school graduation, he has published his first official musical video, and is set to release his first full album on Nov. 2, with his album release party at the House of Blues in Orlando on Dec. 22.

personal favorite. “I would like to open for George Straight,” he said. “He is one of the greatest country singers. I would be honored to get on stage and sing with him one day.” Of course, his biggest inspiration are his fans. Having become a country music star in such a short time and at such a young age, the fact that there are people who love his music inspires him the most to continue performing it. “What inspires me the most has to be the fans,” he said. “The main thing is being on stage, just watching the fans and having a good old time telling stories about what you are singing and...knowing that they are there to support me, for not only my music, but also who I am.” While many young perform-

The song was written by Del Shannon. 5. “You’re Only Lonely,” by J.D. Souther, in 1979. The song spent five weeks at the top of the Adult Contemporary chart. Souther chose Phil Everly for backup harmony vocals, a perfect choice.

bining mythology with science. While Toltec mysticism and new world teachings may not be your cup of tea, his four agreements are basic and honest in their foundation: be impeccable with your word, do not take anything personally, do not make assumptions and always do your best. When it comes to being a good human, following this list should be a cakewalk but for some reason, we make living a good life so much harder. I went to bed last night with the word “impeccable” on my mind. This curious word has become somewhat dated in our lives filled with autocorrect. To be impeccable means to be in “accordance with the highest standards of propriety; to be faultless.” Wow, how often can one claim to be faultless? I think back over my past mistakes and when I veered off path, it was because I was not holding myself accountable to the highest standards. I failed to communicate with integrity and my actions were hurtful. If I have learned anything in life, it is that small problems slowly snowball into much larger issues. Integrity, honesty and faultlessness are learned behaviors and the lack of these three values is a symptom of a failing system. Solutions to violence and hate are not simple but the approach should be. Learning to be impeccable is the first step. QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS info@todayandtonight.com NOVEMBER 2018

Lakeland’s Margarita Ball has raised more

than $1 million to buy gifts for underprivi-

will take place November 17 from 8 p.m. to 11

p.m. Tickets are $40 per person in advance and

attendees are asked to bring an unwrapped children’s gift valued at $10 or more.

“It’s been very successful,” says Henry

Last year, 9,300 Polk County children woke up Christmas morning with all kinds of toys thanks to Toys for Tots. Residents can now begin dropping off new, unwrapped toys for children birth to 13 years old. “There are thousands of underpriviledged children in Polk County and every child deserves a Christmas,” says local coordinator David Waller. To qualify, families must currently be receiving public assistance. Parents can go online and fill out an application and information about their children. The deadline is November 15. Polk County’s Toys for Tots program began more than 30 years ago and operates solely on volunteers. They are needed to get collection boxes to businesses and collecting toys at the warehouse. Waller says they rely on local citizens and businesses to help make the program successful. Drop off locations are listed on the website. Last year, Toys for Tots began challenging high schools to gather as many toys as possible. Waller hopes it will show the students how important it is to volunteer and to help those less fortunate. They are also challenging the state attorney, public defender’s, tax collec-

Those registered to receive toys need to look for important information in their emails. To apply for toys, volunteer or host drop off sites go to www.lakeland-fl.toysfortots.org.

The Christmas tree lot is a great fundraiser and the proceeds stay in the community.” Along with trees, wreaths will also be for sale. Christmas Tree sales will be held this year in front of Champions Church on 1801 Havendale Blvd., Winter Haven We will open Nov 23 and hours are from 9am until 9pm.
