A Truly Magical Holiday Celebration at Bok Tower Gardens

Discover the magic of the holiday season on December 14 – 15 at Bok Tower Gardens with a festival like none other featuring The Nutcracker performed by The Singing Tower and local ballet dancers, dancing aerial characters, Freddie Gnomested LIVE, stilt walkers, characters, and the most important elf of all... SANTA! Festival performances will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and The Nutcracker Live will be at 3 p.m. This festival is free for members and included in general admission.

A HOLIDAY DANCE ON AIR

Unique to Bok Tower Gardens, eight incredible festival characters will perform aerial holiday routines suspended from the air. These talented performers will dance in the air using various circus arts apparatuses, including the double lyra, trapeze, aerial lyra & silk, aerial ham-

mock, and triple strap.

After their beautiful aerial dance, meet The Snow Queen (Zoe Bovio), La Princessa de Nochebuena (Berenice Perez), Dolly the Rag Doll (Maylen Morales), The Fairy Noel (Paula Blackwelder), Ginger Snap (Morgan Snellgrove), The Sugar Plum Fairy (Summer Sadler), Merry Mint (Juliet Moore), Clarice The Reindeer (Eliza Torress), and Holly (Reegan Endemano).

MEET FANTASTICAL HOLIDAY CHARACTERS

Dressed in his gardening best, meet Santa on Saturday, December 14, and the Christmas Cookie Baker on both Saturday and Sunday, December 14-15.

Freddy Gnomested will be at El Retiro to help children of all ages find 20 gnomes hiding throughout the estate's garden areas. The Christmas Elf and

Christmas Razzle Dazzler will also join the fun with street-mosphere for the whole family.

THE NUTCRACKER LIVE AT THE SINGING TOWER

Geert D'hollander premiered the first performance of The Nutcracker for the Carillon in 2023. His masterful arrangements of Tchaikovsky's holiday spectacular showcased the beloved ballet like no other instrument and marked the first time The Singing Tower has hosted ballet performers. Two local ballet troupes will join him to perform selections from The Nutcracker below the historic golden sundial at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The ballet dancers will be under the direction of Jermaine Thornton.

A PERFORMING ARTS COLLABORATION FOR THE HOLIDAYS

The Magic of the Holidays Festival is a collaboration between Bok Tower Gardens, Paula Blackwelder, and Jermaine Thornton. Well respected throughout the circus world, Blackwelder is a professional aerialist with disciplines in flying trapeze, single trapeze, web, Lyra, silks, hammock, and more. She has performed in various venues, theme parks, and resort attractions throughout the United States and Mexico. She is also an Aerial Arts Instructor, creating courageous confidence in her students at her Haines City studio, The Circus Arts Place.

Thornton began his dance training with lyrical jazz and ballet at Port Saint Lucie High School. After graduation, he received a dance scholarship to Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce, Florida. While there, Jermaine began his formal studies in classical ballet, Graham, Cunningham, and Limon modern dance.

A complete list of performance times and activities will be posted to Boktowergardens.org.

Be A Helper

Sigh. I wrote last month’s column with the expectation that the presidential election would turn out far differently than how it actually played out. I expected better from the election. Because I expected better from my fellow Americans. Evidently, my faith in both was unfounded. So very, very unfounded.

I honestly did not expect my fellow Americans to vote for a failed politician who proved to be so bad his first term he lost re-election. And I honestly did not expect them to vote for him again, especially after he became a convicted felon found. Guilty on 34 felony counts. Again, my faith was unfounded. So, now, the question I’m sure everyone (except those who voted for the Rotten Orange) has been asking since election night: What now?

Honestly, I don’t know.

I wish I had an answer to that question. But what do I know? I assumed Trump wouldn’t win. Again! Now that he’s won, I honestly don’t know what happens next. Maybe things won’t be as bad as last time. Maybe it will.

war against Palestine how Trump will only sit back and gleefully allow Netanyahu to continue committing his war crimes and genocide against the Palestinian people. At least Kamala would have done something!

And I don’t know how to explain to people that things won’t really be that bad. How America won’t end up in another Great Depression. Or how the world won’t end up entering into World War Three. Or how migrants won’t end up being rounded up into mass deportations. Or how trans folk won’t end up being oppressed further by our government. Because, for the life of me, I don’t know if any of those things will happen or not.

But I do know this: things aren’t entirely hopeless.

Mr. Rogers had a saying during times of emergency. He told children that, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”

1. ANATOMY: Where is the glabella located in the human body?

2. LITERATURE: In children’s books, what is the name of the Big Red Dog?

3. GEOGRAPHY: In which country would you find the 98-foot-tall Christ the Redeemer figure?

4. GAMES: What number is represented by the phrase “two little ducks” in bingo?

5. SCIENCE: What percentage of air is nitrogen gas?

6. MUSIC: When did Rock the Vote, an organization that encourages young people to vote, come into being?

7. TELEVISION: Which 1970s comedy show features the theme song

“Come On Get Happy”?

8. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: Which month of the year has the least number of letters?

9. U.S. STATES: Which state is first alphabetically?

10. MOVIES: Which 1983 movie features a character named Tony Montana?

I don’t know how to explain to people who voted for him due to “inflation” or the “price of eggs” that Trump won’t do a darn thing about high gas and grocery prices. If anything, his tariffs will only start a trade war that will certainly make prices even higher.

I don’t know how to explain to those people the reason why their loved ones probably did not invite them to Thanksgiving or Christmas. I don’t know how to explain to them how their president makes so many people like women, migrants, trans folk, and people of color feel unsafe, that is why those people do not feel safe with the folks who voted for him.

I don’t know how to explain to the people who refused to vote for Kamala because she supported the

And he was right. Even during the worst times, there were always folks who helped other people. We saw that after the hurricanes, and we will most certainly see it whenever another emergency arises.

But allow me to add to that quote: Don’t just look for helpers. Be one of the helpers!

Now, more than ever, people are going to need help. And it won’t just do to sit back and wait for other people to help. If you see someone who needs help, help them. Be the helper that other people need. Be a helper!

Because now, and for the next four years, can we use all the help that we can get.

1. Freda Payne’s 1970 hit (a song she didn’t even want to record) was about a newly married couple who end up sleeping in separate rooms.

• If you are serving hot rolls on a buffet, line the basket with aluminum foil before you line it with a towel. They lose heat less quickly that way.

• “I’ve loved this little trick since I saw it used at a party years ago. I serve iced tea (or punch) at most of my get-togethers, and instead of ice cubes, I freeze several pounds of cleaned, de-stemmed white grapes. They are a hit at every party.” -M.A. in New York

• Need almost-instant party snacks? Try a package of storebought cheese tortellini. Cook according to package instructions (usually only a few minutes), toss with oil or salad dressing and stick each on a toothpick.

2. Rose Royce, in 1976. The song was one of the first to use a Pollard Syndrum, an electric drum with reverb. The song only reached 32 on the Hot 100 chart, but reached single digits in several countries such as New Zealand and Ireland.

3. He was a miner who saved others when a mine caved in.

4. The Steppenwolf hit was used in “Easy Rider” in 1969.

5. “Still Waters Run Deep,” by Brook Benton, in 1962. The song appeared on Benton’s “Golden Hits Volume 2” album, along with “Hotel Happiness” and “Lie to Me.” Benton (born Benjamin Franklin Peay in Lugoff, South Carolina) died of pneumonia in 1988.

• “A great way to make things comfortable for guests is to print out a copy of the channel lineup for your cable service provider. You also can print out common remote control buttons or any remote-control or TV instructions for streaming movies, etc. This helps us older folks enjoy a few hours of TV time while the younger kids are out at work or school.” -- H.P. in Nebraska

• At holiday parties, try this tip to avoid overeating: Keep a drink in your dominant hand. You’ll be less likely to graze on high-fat chips and other snack foods. Need a little something? Hope for a veggie platter. But whether it’s veggies or chips, grab a couple then WALK AWAY from the table before you can hit the dip.

• Here’s a great conversation piece: Get a big, shallow bowl or box, fill it with loose snapshots (preferably of holidays past) and set it on your coffee table. People can’t resist photos.
