21st Annual
Polk’s Beloved Bartender feature story started with the very first edition of the magazine in July 2004, and due to its popularity, the voting aspect became a staple component a few years later. Throughout the contest’s history, we’ve featured and photographed more than 215 Polk County bartenders, and the magazine has collected more than 45,000 votes from dedicated readers wanting to recognize their favorite hospitality professionals. This contest has quickly become our way of saying “thank you” to the men and women who work hard each day to provide superior customer service.
Typically, this popular issue was always featured in July to mark its first edition on the streets of Polk County. Fast forward 16 years to March 2020, no one would have ever thought that our hospitality industry would have been shut down mid-day on a popular holiday, St. Patrick’s Day, which typically packed the bars and restaurants in celebration.
Thanks to the pandemic, the hospitality industry was devastated leaving its employees to struggle with non-employment for an undetermined about of time. This coincided with the same time
that our usual voting began. With such uncertainty looming, we decided to continue allowing votes to trickle in as we all learned what the “new normal” would be going forward. As a company, we also had to decide the best way to move forward, transitioning to an online magazine, as well as how to honor an industry in a chaotic time. Deciding to hold off on our Polk’s Beloved Bartenders issue from July to October was the best outcome! Fast forward to 2024, the hospitality industry is back on track, especially this time of the year with fall and football season coinciding. 2024 marks our 20th Anniversary as Polk County’s premiere dining and entertainment magazine and it has been our pleasure to bring so many amazing stories and destinations to our, now virtual, pages. Over the years, our writers followed the careers of rising music stars, watched new businesses thrive and shared their unique perspective on this beautiful community that we live, work, and play in. We are proud to be the publication that weaves entertainment, dining, events and more into a dynamic fabric that is truly vibrant and local!
For the fourth year, we put a little ghoulish twist on the Polk’s Beloved Bartenders issue by releasing it during October as the Halloween Edition. We cast a spell on our readers to get out and explore our wickedly cool hospitality industry Polk County has to offer and say hello to our winners and try some of
their favorite adult concoctions.
Finally, we want to take the time to thank our advertisers, readers and supporters for the monstrous memories and 20 YEARS of spooktacular success. Today & Tonight Magazine is the beating heart of Polk County, and we are committed to providing Central Florida with the best spinetingling local entertainment and events.
Cue up the creepy music…Today & Tonight Magazine presents the 21st Annual Polk’s Top Ten Beloved Bartenders…we’ll be lurking for you. Bah…ha…ha...ha!

What is the secret to your success as a bartender?
I try to be as attentive as possible. We have a ton of regulars that come to The Apple so I really try to pay attention to everyone’s particularities and preferences. I feel like that’s what helps our newer customers become our regulars, once we see you a couple times, it’s like you’ve been coming in for years!
If you weren't a bartender, what would your profession be?
That’s a tough one. Before I started working at The Apple I mainly worked in office settings doing administrative work. I imagine if I weren’t a bartender I would get back into the 9-5 grind while possibly going to school for a Business Degree. I haven’t really thought about it honestly because I love what I do!
Top Five Items on your "Bucket List"?
1. Traveling to Europe
2. Seeing Eminem in concert
3. Meeting Johnny Depp
4. Bungee Jumping
5. Going to Hawaii
You won the lottery, now what? I would pay off all my family’s debt, buy a house on the beach, buy a house probably in Montana, buy my mom a house wherever she wants, and buy an RV to travel the country! Just to start…. LoL
With the 2024 election coming up, no matter if you're a Democrat or a Republican, what issues/topics mean the most to you and your family?
I think taxes on tips is an important issue for me. Obviously I would prefer not to be taxed on the tips my customers leave. Women’s rights are also important to me. I try my best not to get too political with customers or on social media only because I feel like it is personal for a lot of people and I never want politics to get in the way of my relationships.
What's your favorite place in the USA? And why?
I love the beach! Preferably St. Pete Beach/ Treasure Island. When I’m there it’s just my time to relax and have a good time. Whether it’s for a day trip, weekend, or full vacation, I always enjoy my time there.
Where is the one place in the world you want to visit?
I would love to go to Ireland. My mom’s side of the family is Irish and I’ve always thought that it looks so pretty in pictures and movies. It’s so old and historic that I think it would be an amazing place to visit.
If you were reincarnated as an animal, what would you choose and why?
I would say a Cardinal. They say that when you see a cardinal it means that a loved one who has passed is visiting you. Besides the fact that I would love to be able to fly, I like the idea of visiting my family and them thinking of me when they see me.
What famous person, past or present, would you like to have dinner with? Why?
I think I would like to have dinner with Robin Williams. There are so many movies of his that I watched growing up that were my favorites. He always tried to make people smile and he always seemed so kind. I think he would make for a very interesting dinner guest!
What ice cream flavor sums up your personality? Why?
I’ll say Rocky Road. There are always bumps and hard times in life, but I always try to stay sweet!
Do you "binge watch" shows? What show or shows are you currently watching? Yes I love binge watching! Right now I am re-watching This Is Us because my boyfriend never watched it when it was on TV and it is such a good show!
What's the last scary movie you watched? I love scary movies but it’s been a while since I watched one. For some reason the last scary movie I can remember watching is Scream VI at the movie theatre last year.
In your youth, what shenanigans or "tricks" did you pull at Halloween? Or were pulled on you?
I wasn’t a big trickster growing up. My younger brother used to leave fake snakes and frogs and whatnot around for me to find because he knew I was terrified of them.
If you Trick or Treated as an adult, what "treat" would you want in your bag? Money! Haha! No but seriously, my favorite candies are Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Twix Bars so either of those would be great. Sour Patch Kids wouldn’t be bad either!
Favorite Halloween costume of all time? One year when I was a kid I went as Cinderella and I loved the blue dress that I wore! That was probably my favorite costume.
What's your favorite Fall-flavored or Halloween inspired cocktail? And, what's your signature cocktail?
I don’t really have a favorite fall flavored or Halloween inspired cocktail. I’m not a fan of pumpkin spiced anything really so that knocks out a lot of options. I do like apple cider though, so I would probably like a cocktail with apple cider in it. We have a drink at The Apple called a “Red Devil” and that’s what I make anytime someone comes in and tells me “I don’t know what I want, but I want something sweet!”
Is there anything you would like to add? We'd love to know more about you! I love what I do and I am so proud that I was selected as a favorite bartender of Polk County! I love all of my customers and I love where I work. We really are a family at The Apple and that makes working here even better. People have called The Apple the “Cheers” of Winter Haven and I absolutely have to agree! It’s definitely a place for Good Food, Good Friends, and Good Times!

Vote Against Project 2025!
This election season may seem like a choice between Kamala Harris or Donald Trump. In reality, it’s a choice for or against a radical agenda to subvert democracy and dismantle our government. That agenda is called Project 2025. More formally known as Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise, Project 2025 is a 900+ page political playbook published by the Heritage Foundation, a right-wing think tank. The playbook lays out a “comprehensive, concrete transition plan” for the first 180 days of a Trump presidency (or any Republican presidency) to implement widespread “conservative” policy throughout the federal government. What kind of policies does this book propose? Here’s but a sample:
#1: Raise Taxes on Middle Class. The good news: Project 2025 lowers taxes... on the super wealthy. The bad news: it raises taxes on everyone else. Project 2025 would implement tax reform that, according to the Center for American Progress, “would raise taxes by $3,000 for the median family of four” and “raise taxes by $950 for the typical single-person household” while households making more than $10 million would receive a “$1.5–2.4 million tax cut.”
branches—the President, Congress, and Supreme Court—has more power than the other. Such a system prevents the president from acting like a dictator.
So, unsurprisingly, Project 2025 would undo those checks on presidential power. As CAP reports, it “would consolidate power in the presidency by weakening the independence of public agencies, preparing to replace tens of thousands of civil servants with far-right loyalists, and gutting the system of checks and balances.”
#4: Deport Immigrants En Masse. Trump has called for the “largest deportation program in American history.” The masterminds behind Project 2025 echo his sentiments. Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation, stated in a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) interview, that “the 12 million people who’ve come in as illegal aliens must be sent back to their native country.”
How? As the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights reports, Project 2025 would enable raids in “sensitive zones” like schools and hospitals, double the number of immigrants who can be detained (“up to 100,000 on any day”), and even eliminate birthright citizenship.

#2: Gut Federal Agencies. The GOP has often bragged about wanting to make the government small enough to “drown in a bathtub.” Project 2025 aims to do exactly that. From the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Education (DOE), most federal agencies would be eliminated.
Even more concerning (especially in the wake of Hurricane Helen), the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which includes the National Weather Service, would be eliminated. Why? Because, according to Project 2025, NOAA is allegedly “one of the main drivers of the climate change alarm industry” and is thus “harmful to U.S. prosperity.”
#3: Give President Unchecked Power. Historically, the American government has maintained a system of checks and balances to ensure that not one of its three
#5: Ban Porn (and Sex Ed). As Project 2025 declares: “Pornography should be outlawed. The people who produce and distribute it should be imprisoned.” Of course, when Project 2025 mentions “porn”, they don’t only mean run-ofthe-mill-smut. They also include drag shows, textbooks on reproductive health, and children’s storybooks with gay characters. The playbook states outright: “Educators and public librarians who purvey it should be classed as registered sex offenders.”
All of this only scratches the surface of Project 2025. The playbook contains many more twisted policy proposals that would transform America into a dystopian nightmare. So do your own research and do your part by voting this election. Vote against Project 2025.

What is the secret to your success as a bartender?
I believe my success comes from a combination of customer service, a deep knowledge of drinks and mixology, and creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Also adapting to your work environment and being a team player is so important.

Auburndale Haunted Yard
by James Coulter
Most folks in Auburndale know where Matthew Reynolds lives. It’s hard to miss his house. It’s the only one on its street that goes hog-wild with the decorations every Halloween.
From wild werewolves and creepy clowns, to iconic movie monsters like Michael Myers and Freddie Kruger, Reynolds decorates his front and back yard with more than 60 animated figures he has collected over the past decade.
Every Halloween, hundreds upon thousands of visitors young and old flock to his house to participate in his haunted walkthrough attraction, peruse his countless animatronics, and—of course!—get plenty of free candy.
Ever since he was a toddler, Reynolds has been fascinated with animated holiday figures and other animatronics. In 2011, his parents took him on his first visit to a Spirit Halloween store at the ripe age of three. He has been in love with the store and its animated decorations ever since.
“Whenever my family would take me [to the store], it would always be such a great experience,” he said. “Most kids [at that age] would be scared by [these Halloween decorations], but I was actually fascinated by how they work and the characters themselves.”
During his first trip to the store, his parents purchased his first decoration: a clown that
18-Year-old Goes Hog-wild with Decorations Every Halloween
popped up whenever somebody approached it. Since then, he and his family would visit the store every year and buy one or two decorations. He has since collected more than 60 animatronics and other animated figures and decorations.
“The biggest flaw is that you can only display them on Halloween day and most other people will not know about it the rest of the year,” he said.
Upon turning 12 years old, his love and collection of animatronics solidified. Aside from Spirit of Halloween, his family would also frequently visit Walt Disney Worlds as annual passholders. His favorite attraction was Splash Mountain with its diverse animatronic characters.
Now that he has turned 18 years old, his hobby has transformed into a career path. He has his own workshop at his house with a workbench and a bin of spare parts, and he has learned how to repair old and broken animated figures.
While he buys many new decorations and figures at Spirit Halloween, more often he purchases some of the older models from second-hand websites like eBay. He even sells some of his older decorations online, as many of them have appreciated, allowing him to earn more money to buy more figures.
Reynold has utilized his experience buying, collecting, and repairing animated figures to set up his own haunted yard walkthrough attraction, which he hosts every Halloween evening. Recently, he even created his own structure from PVC pipes, which measure 10 feet tall and 30 feet wide.
Reynolds wakes up early before the crack of dawn on Halloween day to set up his displays in his front yard, in his garage, and even in his house. By sundown that evening, the display has been fully set up and the visitors start arriving in droves.
“I get done just in time for trick-or-treaters to start coming in,” he said. “The greatest part of doing these displays is that people come in and get to see essentially my life’s work. The fact that I do it all by myself and it takes so long and it is a lot of hard work.”
“People come and smile, they laugh, they get scared,” he continued. “The kids love it. The adults love it. The kids love it because it is such a site to see with all the animatronics in place. Many kids don’t get to see that. And the adults love it just as much because they remember some of these vintage pieces when they were kids. So, it is a memorable experience for everybody.”
Last year, his haunted yard tour drew in nearly 1,000 visitors. He hopes to draw in more with this year’s display. He even has a new scene planned to include characters from Wednesday, the popular series on Netflix based on the Addams Family.
As for the future, Reynolds certainly has plans to utilize his experience repairing the machinery for animated characters by becoming a ride technician at Universal Studios Florida. The position is open to applicants 22 years or older, so he has four more years to wait in anticipation. Until then, he plans on continuing to set up his annual Halloween displays for as long as he can.
Matthew Reynolds’ Haunted Yard will be open to the public on Halloween evening on Oct. 31 from 5 pm to 11 pm. The attraction is located at 136 Patterson Drive in Auburndale, Fl.

1. Name the artist who had an ice cream flavor named after him.
2. Why was the “In the Navy” video filmed on a U.S. Navy ship?
3. Who released “Message in a Bottle”?
4. Name the Leo Sayer song that is based on his long conversation in a phone booth.
5. Name the soundtrack song that contains this lyric: “First there are kisses, Then there are sighs, And then, before you know where you are, You’re sayin’ goodbye.”
ANSWERS
1. Ben & Jerry’s named one of their flavors Cherry Garcia after Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead in 1987.
• You can use self-stick notes to organize your errands. Use a note for each location, with instructions or shopping lists on each. Then put the notes in order: e.g., drop kids off at Grandma’s, shoe store, hardware store, grocery store, home, etc. You will be less likely to forget a stop, and you can make the best use of your time and gas!
• Two tips for sewing buttons: First, for pants buttons, use unwaxed dental floss. It’s incredibly strong and can take a lot of abuse. Second, slip a pin between the button and the fabric before sewing on. When you’re finished, remove the pin. The button has some room behind it, and it will last longer.
• “This is a tip for us singletons.
2. The Village People were asked by the Navy for permission to use the song in a recruiting video. The answer was yes, as long as the group was included in the video.
3. The Police, in 1979.
4. “Orchard Road,” in 1983. Sayer was on the phone asking his wife’s forgiveness for a mistake he’d made. The song was recorded in one raw take.
5. “The Crying Game,” by Boy George in the 1992 film of the same name. The film, about the Troubles in Northern Ireland, took not only a BAFTA for Best British Film but Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director and more.
I love whipped topping on my hot chocolate, but it doesn’t always last in my fridge. I buy a tub of it, and spoon it into mug-size dollops on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. When the sheet is full, I freeze them. They can be peeled off easily and slipped in a container or plastic bag. When I make my hot chocolate, I plop one in straight from the freezer. It takes only minutes to soften and melt. And it’s delicious!” -- F.D. in Michigan
• “If you cut the entire top and one of the top corners off a cereal box, then tape the bottom closed, it’s almost the same as the magazine holders they sell in stores. I covered mine with fancy paper. I keep it in my kitchen for cooking magazines.”
-- R.R. in Indiana
• Gifts a school-age kid can make: Bookmarks! Cut strips of cardstock into bookmark lengths. Have your child decorate one side and write a nice message on the other. Laminate if possible. Great gift from your child.
