For the past 20 years, Smoke On The Water has been one of the biggest barbecue competitions in Winter Haven. However, a sudden change within the original organization forced the event committee to relocate and rebrand themselves as Smoke OFF The Water. Even then, the annual event remains bigger and better than ever, especially now going into its second year under a new name.
Smoke OFF The Water returns once again to its new location near the Humane Society of Polk County for a weekend of hot music,
drinks, and barbecue, all to raise proceeds for a good cause. More than 20 food vendors (with 10 more expected to join) have already signed up to attend this year’s event.
Originally starting as Smoke On The Water, the annual event received its namesake from its former location at the Boys and Girls Club of Polk County Citrus Center along Havendale Boulevard in Winter Haven. For nearly two decades, its barbecue competition drew in barbecue teams from across the state and country.
Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond their control, Smoke On The Water
was no longer able to be hosted at the Citrus Center. Last year, event organizers only had three weeks to shift gears and reorganize the event with food trucks rather than barbecue teams.
“The crowd, the community, they seemed to enjoy that,” explained Dusty Marshall, event organizer. “We kind of changed it up from the barbecue competition. So now it is just a big community event. And last year, everybody rallied behind us and it seems like we have their support again this year.”
Last year, the event organizers formed their own 501c3 non-profit organization, Southern Charities Group, Inc. Now, instead of raising proceeds for one local organization, they can raise funds for various local charities and non-profits.
Once more the event committee, Southern Charities Group, has teamed up with the Humane Society of Polk County to host
the event on a property beside the Winter Haven Surgical Center on Dundee Rd which is just down from the Humane Society's no-kill facility. Southern Charities Group will also be donating a portion of their proceeds to Girls Inc. of Winter Haven.
Dusty Marshall has been part of the event’s planning committee for the past eight years. He enjoys being able to cooperate with good friends to host their fundraiser, as well as raise money for the local community.
Now that they have formed their own non-profit organization, the event committee behind Southern Charities Group, Inc. will be able to extend their outreach into the community through more than their annual event.
“We are going to be hosting multiple other events throughout the year now that we have branched out on our own,”
Marshall explained. “So, it is all about being part of a community and just the fellowship of everyone and helping these organizations that need funds... We enjoy giving back to the community and raising money for these other organizations that are in need. There is a lot of pride in that. It makes you feel good.”
Last year, during its first year under its new rebrand, Smoke OFF The Water drew in nearly three to four thousand attendees and raised more than $76,000 for the Humane Society of Polk County. This year, they expect attendance and proceeds to only double, with an estimated 5,000 to 8,000 in attendance and $200,000 in net proceeds.
This year’s event will also see double the fun, with two stages for live music, two bonfires, three bars (two serving beer, wine, and liquor), more than 30 food trucks and vendors, and a grand sponsor party and VIP
tent for their biggest sponsors.
“We have our big players like we have had for the last 10 to 15 years. We have all of those who are already signed up,” Marshall said. “Right now, I already have 20 food vendors signed up, and I am expecting another ten over the next couple of weeks. So, there will be plenty of food.”
Other events to be hosted by Southern Charities Group, Inc. include Grillfest on March 28th and 29th and Wingin It, which is scheduled for early fall 2025.
Smoke OFF The Water will be hosted on Fri, Feb 7th from 6-10 pm and Sat, Feb 8th from 10-6 pm, located at 3195 Dundee Rd, Winter Haven, FL, 33884. Admission is $10 (free for children ages 14 and under) with free on-site parking. For more information, visit their Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/p/Smoke-OFF-theWater-61555834101122/

A Haines City Police documentary making its way at a film festival recently won an Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Suncoast chapter.
Haines City City Manager James R. Elensky said he’s excited about the Emmy win.
“We are incredibly proud of the Haines City Police Department for their dedication and hard work, which has been rightfully recognized with this Emmy award,” Elensky said. “This documentary not only highlights their commitment to serving our community but also showcases the exceptional teamwork and professionalism that define our police force. Congratulations to Karina and everyone involved in this remarkable achievement."
"Heart of Florida: PD" is an Emmy-winning documentary that follows the journey of police officers in Central Florida as they strive to make a positive impact in their community.
Directed by Karina Michel, the film focuses on officers, who face personal struggles while dedicating themselves to serving and protecting their community. The film was produced in 2022 and 2023.
“I'm so happy that the film and our local community and law enforcement got the recognition I was so hoping for,” Michael said.
Michel, a Davenport resident, chose the Haines City Police Department because it had that “inner city vibe” and the ridealongs were “pretty amazing.”
“I was inspired by the officers,” she said.
Through innovative policing methods and a focus on building trust, the officers find solace and purpose in their work. The documentary explores themes of resilience, redemption, and the transformative power of compassion in law enforcement, highlighting the courage and determination of those who serve others despite facing adversity.

Look! I’m not going to sugarcoat it. Last year was the worst. The best thing I can say about 2024 was that it was not the worst year ever. Otherwise, it was still pretty bad, for me and everyone else.
In fact, the past several years has been the absolute worst for me. I can safely say 2019 was the last best year I ever had. Every other year since then has been all downhill from there. It all started with 2020. COVID-19 appeared, and it wrecked everything. The pandemic forced everyone indoors, and the world came to a screeching halt as work and fun had to be postponed.
Then came 2021, which started with a failed coup attempt at the U.S. Capitol. For me, personally, things took a turn for the worst when my mother was diagnosed with cancer. The good news was that she overcame her cancer a few years later. The bad news...well, I’ll get to that when I get to that.
in Virginia, where I’ve been living ever since. And to top off this messed-up sundae of an awful half decade, my dog of nearly 12 years finally went home to the big dog park in the sky.
So, to say I haven’t been in the best headspace for the past few years would be an understatement. It feels as though a little black rain cloud has been hanging over my head and zapping me with lightning bolts any chance it gets. “Depressed” doesn’t even begin to describe my feelings.
At this point, the only things I have left are my family, my job, and my health. Even then, with everything bad that has happened so far, I don’t expect any of those to be a constant in my life. In fact, if I end up being diagnosed with cancer sometime within the next decade, I wouldn’t be the least bit shocked—disheartened, to be sure, but not shocked.

The next year, 2022, my best friend of nearly a decade decided they no longer wanted to be friends with me and cut ties with me, and all over a major misunderstanding. I attempted to bridge the gap, but she quickly burned the bridge behind her.
Everything became worse in 2023 when my mother’s cancer relapsed. She passed away earlier that year, and the day before my birthday, ironically enough. My father had passed away a few years prior, and I’ve since lost all my grandparents and my uncle.
And then there was last year: 2024. My stepfather decided to remarry and move out of the house, but not before he sold it—while I was still living there, and after I had helped pay off the mortgage with my inheritance. So, I was forced to move up with my other family in my old hometown
I’ve lost so much over the past five years that I don’t have much else to lose; and yet, even then, if Murphy’s Law is correct, I’m sure I’ll eventually lose all that I have. Let’s face it. At this point, I’m a loser.
If anything gives me solace, it’s that while I have lost a lot, I’ve also gained a lot. I gained a new house to live in. I gained new insurance that has allowed me to seek therapy and medication for my anxiety and depression. And I’ve gained new members of the family with a niece and nephew in law, and the births of a great niece and nephew.
So, I guess while I lost a lot, I’ve also gained a lot. I can only hope I see more gains this year and the next years to come.

Nearly 100 years ago, a man was born who dared to dream of a world where people of different races could live together in harmony, where a person could be judged, not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.
Every year around January 15, cities across the country commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his pursuit of equality. Hi! I'm Coda, a brown and black male Black Mouth Cur mix. He is approximately 4 years old and has been neutered. Coda gets along well with adults and children but can be very excitable with new faces. He is a work in progress with other dogs and we are not sure how he would do with a new furry friend. His favorite things to do is play tug or fetch!
Meet, Gamora! A 3 year old, female, Bully mix. Gamora loves to play! Her favorite toys have squeakers in them. She enjoys being brushed and petted, she will even lay like a frog so you can do a good job brushing her. Gamora loves to play in water so baby pools are a must as she likes to cool off in them and take her toys for a swim too!
What's up, Doc? Bugs is a brown and white male Domestic Shorthair mix. He is approximately 1 year old and has been neutered. Bugs is an adorable boy and will make your heart melt with his big green eyes! He can be a bit shy with new people, but warms up quickly with treats. Bugs loves to play with all toys and enjoys rubbing himself in cat nip.
Introducing Chi, pronounced "shy", he is around 1year old and has been neutered. Chi, like his name suggests, can be a little shy at first but will melt in your arms once he is comfortable with you! He is great around other cats and kittens, but is not fond of dogs. Chi does not like loud noises so a calmer environment would be best for him. He loves to sleep in anyplace where he feels safe and secure,

Dr. Patricia Mattson came to Lakeland from Albnany, Georgia, her hometown. She grew up with a strong family background surrounded by hunting dogs and owned her own horse since the age of 10. She originally attended veterinary school with the goal of becoming an equine practitioner but opted for our small animal friends instead. She graduated from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1993. After working for one year in Georgia, Dr. Mattson decided to return to sunny Florida where she worked for various clinics over the past eighteen years. She opened Companion Animal Hospital in 2009 where she strives to have a great facility with a caring and friendly staff.
