Summer is ending. The days are getting shorter. The air is getting cooler. October is right around the corner--and with it brings a lot of great annual fall events.
Now adding into the mix of events to look forward to, the city of Auburndale’s CityFest has been moved to October – previously a springtime event now in its third year. With live musical performances, arts and crafts vendors, food trucks, and even a ski tournament, it’ll be sure to offer big fun for the whole family and along with weather.
This year’s CityFest headliner is the very popular group Diamond Rio, the chart-topping, award-winning country band that will be playing many of its hit songs, including its #1 hit single “Meet in The Middle.”
The event will also feature two other bands which will be announced on the City of Auburndale’s website. Stay tuned for event updates and more details!
Auburndale CityFest will be hosted at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex. With more than 250 acres, this venue is big enough to offer plenty of big fun, from food trucks and arts and crafts vendors to live concerts, bounce houses, and a touch-a-truck event.
Yes! Truck fans young and old can go up to their favorite vehicle and touch it with their own hands: dump trucks, pickup trucks, fire and police vehicles, and even trucks from TECO and Duke Energy.
There will even be a barefoot skiing tournament. That’s right! The 2024 IWWF World Barefoot Championships will be hosting a tournament at Lake Myrtle. It will be the largest tournament in the championship, with more than 100 athletes from 10 different countries arriving to compete at Auburndale’s 2,000-foot-long
ski lake. For more information, https://2024barefootworlds.com
For the past three years, the City of Auburndale has been hosting its annual CityFest to bring both residents and visitors together in the city for a great time. Best of all, the event is free and open to the public. Everyone is invited, and everyone can enjoy free family-friendly fun with free music, games, and other activities. Food trucks will also be on-site.
Previously, the annual event had been hosted in the spring. However, as spring showers often forced them to put an end to their festivities early, they decided to host this year’s event in autumn, explained Cody McGee, Director of Parks and Recreation.
“We are trying to beat the spring rains,” he said. “Hope this year’s will stay dry. Each year we had to shorten an hour our final act because of rain. So being in October, we are hoping to get clear skies that evening. So, we are excited about it.”
Each year has been growing, to the point where the event moved to the city’s sports complex to better facilitate it, McGee said. The city has high expectations for this year’s event, and they hope it will prove to be even bigger and better, he said.
“Our numbers are growing each year,” McGee said. “We are looking for big crowds. It is on one of our big soccer fields with a ton of room. It is a free event, which is something we love...So we are excited to see what this year brings us and see how the crowd grows. We are pumped.”
Growing crowds have likewise reflected a growing city. Over the past three years, the City of Auburndale has experienced real population growth. With more and more people arriving in the city, CityFest is sure to show them
everything they can come to love from their hometown.
“Auburndale has grown three or four thousand residents since the first event,” McGee said. “Last year, Polk County had over 23,000 new residents, so Auburndale has grown like all the other cities. CityFest is an opportunity to have fun on a level that isn’t just sports, so we are excited about it. We hope everyone comes out and has a great time. We want to see everyone smiling and enjoying themselves.”
Auburndale CityFest will be hosted on Sat. Oct. 12 from 4 PM to 9:30 PM at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex, located at 2701 Lake Myrtle Park Rd, Auburndale, FL 33823. For more information, visit the city website: https:// auburndalefl.com/cityfest/
ABOUT AUBURNDALE
Located north of Winter Haven and east of Lakeland, Auburndale is a small town that has been steadily growing along with the rest of Polk County. In 2000, they had a population of roughly 11,000; nearly 20 years later, that number has grown to more than 15,000.
“Historic and quaint Auburndale is one of Central Florida’s smaller cities, but it definitely has a lot to offer,” its city website states.
The town certainly has much to offer, including one of Florida’s best RV resorts (Camp Margaritaville Auburndale), a racecar track (Auburndale Speedway), a bustling flea market that hosts free circus-style shows (International Market World), and its 250-acre sports complex with eleven soccer fields, nine baseball fields, and the Florida Sports Hall of Fame.
ABOUT DIAMOND RIO
Originally The Tennessee River Boys, this country band changed its name to Diamond Rio in 1989. Since then, they have released plenty of chart-topping hits, including “How Your Love Makes Me Feel,” “One More Day,” and “Meet in The Middle,” which allowed them the honor of becoming the first country music group in history to reach No. 1.
Their music has sold more than 6.8 million albums, surpassed more than 1.05 billion global streams, and charted twenty Top 10 singles, fifteen Top 5 singles, and seven No. 1 singles. They have also supported many humanitarian causes, allowing them to raise more than $1 million for non-profits and receive the Minnie Pearl Humanitarian Award.

Polk State prepares for 38th annual FallFest
Special to T&T Magazine
The smell of pumpkin spice and cinnamon brooms might not be in the air quite yet, but it’s not too early for vendors to reserve their spot for Polk State College’s 2024 FallFest.
For nearly four decades, the annual event has been a staple of the community. This year’s event on Polk State’s Winter Haven Campus takes place on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This will mark the event’s 38th year. Last year, more than125 locals, businesses, and College clubs set up booths across campus with exciting, seasonal, and innovative homemade arts, crafts, and products.
“FallFest is one of Polk State’s signature events that people look forward to every year,” said Nancy Lozell, Program Manager for The Arts at Polk State. “The unique crafts, the activities, the way people flock to our Winter Haven Campus – there’s nothing quite like it.”
The event is free and open to the public with fees from craft booths going to the Polk State College Foundation to benefit the College’s deserving students. The Foundation supports the College’s educational mission in many ways, including establishing scholarships and purchasing equipment for students.
The event will also feature family-friendly activities such as games, haunted houses, bounce houses, shows, and presentations from local law enforcement and EMS. Polk State College clubs and athletics programs will also participate in the event to raise money for their organizations by hosting different activities and food sales.
The Chain O’ Lakes Big Band and Polk State Jazz Ensemble headline this year’s entertainment. The event will also feature performances from local student dance teams, choirs, and musicians. Last year’s event featured the first FallFest Car Show.
For $60, vendors will be assigned a booth on campus. Limited spots are available inside the Student Center for $70. For business vendors looking to promote their business, the cost is $100.
Registration for a booth will remain open until Oct. 8. Click here to register for FallFest. For more information, contact Lozell at 863.297.1050 or by emailing fallfest@ polk.edu.

Golden Rule, Golden Ticket
“Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”
- Matt. 25:40 (KJV)
When I became old enough to vote, my mother advised me to vote for politicians whose policies aligned with Christian values. Sadly, my departed mother would likely not be proud I’m taking her advice this election. In fact, she most likely would be turning in her urn.
Because I will not be voting for the presidential candidate supported by most Evangelical Christians. I will be voting for Kamala Harris. Both she and Tim Walz are better exemplars of Christian values than the man currently being propped up as the Second Coming of Christ.
And let’s be clear: both Harris and Walz are Christians.
Harris is a Baptist, even if her mother was Hindu and her spouse is Jewish. If anything, her interfaith heritage has allowed her to better empathize with people outside her faith—something quite consistent with a religion whose founder once held up a Samaritan as an example of a good neighbor.
he lived up to Christ’s teachings to care for the poor by supporting policies to protect his state’s most vulnerable. He cut taxes for the middle class, passed paid family and medical need, cut costs for prescription medication, and, perhaps his proudest achievement, provided free breakfast and lunch to children in public schools.
“So, while other states were banning books from their schools, we were banishing hunger from ours,” he said.
Kamala, meanwhile, has an equally impressive track record. As a criminal prosecutor, she protected women and children from their abusers, and as attorney general, she protected homeowners from foreclosure, veterans and students from fraud, and workers from stolen wages.
Her reason for doing all this? She was taught “to never complain about injustice, but to do something about it.” That lesson motivated her career, with her core belief being that “a harm against one of us is a harm against all of us” and that “no one should be made to fight alone” because “we are all in this together.”
1. GEOGRAPHY: How many lakes are in the Great Lakes Basin?
2. MOVIES: What is the little girl’s last name in the film “Matilda”?
3. TELEVISION: What is the name of the teacher on the animated kids’ series “The Magic School Bus”?
4. LITERATURE: In which historic period is Jack London’s novel “Call of the Wild” set?
5. U.S. CITIES: Which city’s nickname is “City by the Bay”?
6. ANATOMY: How much of the human body is made up of water?
7. SCIENCE: What is heliology?
8. HISTORY: Which world leader’s birth name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio?
9. ASTRONOMY: In what year did a U.S. astronaut land on the moon?
10. ENTERTAINERS: Which famous actor who starred in “The Notebook” was once a member of “The Mickey Mouse Club”?
Walz, meanwhile, is a proud member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church, an affirming and egalitarian congregation dedicated to upholding Christ’s teachings about love and tolerance by supporting LGBT affirmation, racial equality and equity, tolerance, and inclusion.
Walz’s faith shone strongest during his DNC speech, when he affirmed his commitment to upholding Christ’s main commandment to love your neighbor as yourself:
Such steadfast devotion to justice allows her to uphold God’s expectation for mankind, as laid out in Micah 6:8, which is “to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God.”

“That family down the road, they may not think like you do, they may not pray like you do, they may not love like you do; but they are your neighbors, and you look out for them, and they look out for you. Everybody belongs, and everybody has a responsibility to contribute.”
Of course, like any good politician, his actions always spoke louder than his words. As Minnesota’s Governor,
When my mother told me to vote for politicians who supported “Christian values”, she, like many conservative Christians, meant politicians who oppose abortion and gay marriage. However, this election, I plan on voting for politicians who support real Christian values, as laid out in Christ’s Corporal Works of Mercy in his Sermon on the Mount: feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, visit the sick and prisoners, and give alms to the poor.
That’s why I’m voting for Harris and Walz.

You also can wad up a piece of aluminum foil and shove it in the hole, pressing it in a bit to create a recess for the compound. The foil will keep the compound at the site of the hole, allowing it to set up instead of fall down.

When Loren Nations graduated from Winter Haven High School in 1981 his dreams of becoming an influential veterinarian in a big city would follow many paths. After graduating from UF with his veterinary degree in 1991 he completed a medical and surgical internship at the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan, NY considered the Johns Hopkins of veterinary medicine. Instead of remaining in New York City he returned home to practice “big city” medicine with his mentor Dr. John Maxwell.
Dr. Nations’ desire to help animals and commitment to practice at the highest level led to specialty board certification in canine and feline practice, one of only 425 ABVP diplomats in the country and 27 in the state. With this expertise, the practice has flourished into a seven doctor 24 hour emergency and critical care hospital, specialty referral center, and general practice. Dr. Nations has devoted his life to creating a center that will improve our pet’s lives for years to come.
The completion of a state-of-the-art 10,000 square foot veterinary center is only the beginning of the medical advancements Dr. Nations hopes to bring to Central Florida. “My life revolves around my family and animals. They are one and the same, that is who I am and why I am so passionate about being a veterinarian.”
