15 Years! Always Among Friends Brew Hounds Sports Lounge Celebration
by James Coulter
“Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, and they’re always glad you came.” So goes the theme song to the classic sitcom Cheers. For the past 15 years, one sports bar in Auburndale has been exactly that kind of place for patrons old and new--so much so that their motto is: “Always Among Friends.”
On Saturday, August 17, Brew Hounds Sports Lounge will be raising the roof--and a few glasses--as they host an all-day celebra-
tion of their 15th anniversary. The bar will be open regular hours, but from noon until 11 pm, Brew Hounds will offer a fun-filled day with live music, food trucks, games, raffles, drink specials, and giveaways!
Snoop’s Smash Burgers and Tantrums Lakeside Grill food trucks will be on-site, along with live entertainment provided by Munnville from 2-6 pm and B. Haven from 7-11 pm. Extra parking has been arranged with Barton Storage across the street to assist with overflow. Outside tents for shade will also be onsite.
This day of celebration will also be a day of giving back! Brew Hounds Sports Lounge will also be raising money for the Humane Society of Polk County through several raffles. They will also be accepting donations for the shelter this day as well. Skip Jacobs, co-owner and founder of Brew Hounds Sports Lounge, has been a long-time friend and supporter of the Humane Society and its efforts to help local rescued and surrendered animals find their forever home. For Wish List items needed by the Humane Society: https://www.humanesocietyofpolkcounty.org/donate/wish-list/
Jacobs owes his bar’s success to his customers. Their returning time and again allows his doors to remain open, and they will hopefully allow those doors to remain open for 15 more years and counting.
“The community that binds with our amazing crew at Brew Hounds makes for a fun, safe, and never dull place to come together,” Jacobs said. “I have enjoyed the most are the great people you meet and seeing them smile because they are having a great time.”
Donna Powell remembers the day she first set foot in Brew Hounds. She couldn’t buy a beer. So, Jacobs and his co-owner Luke had a drink with her on the house. She’s been a return customer ever since. To her, the question isn’t, “What’s to love about the bar?” It’s, “What’s not to love?”
“It’s the best, most well-stocked, and the cleanest sports bar in Polk County,” Powell said. “Good drinks and great prices. Awesome owners and [the] best bartenders in town. Runs like a well-oiled machine. I just love Brews. Looking forward to 15 more years.”
Jacobs and his co-owner Luke first opened Brew Hounds 15 years ago. As he explained: “Like many guys at some point in their lives who think it would be cool to open a bar, well, the timing was right to take that leap of faith.”
His patrons are more than simply customers. They’re like an extended family--one that sticks with each other through thick and thin. That much was apparent when the bar re-opened following the COVID-19 pandemic.
“There’s something magical about gathering in a positive environment where competition meets friendship,” he continued. “It’s more than just the game - it’s about building memories and celebrating together.”
Skimming through the reviews on Facebook shows how this sports bar along Havendale Boulevard in Auburndale has remained in business for a decade and a half. Glowing reviews tell of its good beverages and greater company.
“I definitely recommend [it],” one reviewer wrote. “The place looks sketchy, [but] once you go in the door it is very clean, friendly and [there’s] good music playing in the background loud enough so [you] can have a conversation without getting loud.”
Another reviewer calls it “One of the best bars in Florida,” explaining: “Everybody is friendly there and you get to play good pool. The bartenders are nice. Me and my girlfriend Stephanie love it.”
Jacobs expects his bar to keep thriving and expanding. Some extra televisions here and there. Bigger TVs and more of them, being a sports bar it’s important to keep expanding. But through and through he hopes to keep the same friendly atmosphere that drew customers to his bar the same. For the next 15 years and counting, he wants Brew Hounds to be “Always Among Friends.”
Brew Hounds Sports Lounge is located at 318 Havendale Blvd, Auburndale, FL 33823. For more event info, call 863-967-2739, or visit www.facebook.com/brewhounds863 .

Dr. Anne B. Kerr, President of Florida Southern College, is proud to announce a historic transformational gift to the Polk Museum of Art, through a generous donation from the Nicholas and Ashley Barnett Foundation at GiveWell.
In tribute to Florida Southern College and Museum Trustee Ashley Gibson Barnett's deep commitment to the arts, the Smithsonian-Affiliate museum will be renamed The Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art (The AGB) at Florida Southern College, effective July 13, 2024. This generous gift establishes an endowment to support world-class exhibitions, operations, community art and educational programs, expanding the Museum's engagement, accessibility, and influence.
thebarnetts.jpg"As one of the founders of the Museum, I believe this gift brings full circle Mr. George Jenkin's donation of the property in 1966 for our museum location. To have it now named by his grandson for his beloved wife is a true testament to creating a legacy of support for the arts in our community," said Dr. Sarah McKay, Florida Southern College and Museum Trustee Emerita.
Along with its signature exhibitions, like the recent Rockwell/Wyeth, Rodin, and Degas shows, the Museum will introduce new youth, adult, family, and senior programs, including art therapy and art wellness, while remaining admission-free.
"Surprising Ashley with the naming of our community's esteemed museum was a
meaningful way to recognize her dedication to the arts and their impact on our community," explained Nicholas Barnett. "The Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art will be a link between our treasured past and an exciting, forward-thinking future for our community, and we are thrilled to be a part of it.”
The Museum is also home to the growing Florida Southern College Art History and Museum Studies program, the only of its kind housed in a museum. The AGB is thus uniquely positioned to offer unparalleled educational opportunities. Additionally, through a three-decade partnership with the Polk County Public Schools over 5,000 fourth-grade students from the County enjoy field trips to the Museum.
“We are profoundly grateful for this extraordinary gift from our alumni, Nick and Ashley Barnett,” said President Kerr. “This remarkable generosity ensures a world-class future for our revered museum, leaving a legacy that will inspire generations to come.”
As a premier arts destination for Central Florida for the past 58 years, the Museum will
continue to play a critical role in attracting cultural tourists and serving as the area's only community academic art museum. Recently, Ashley Gibson Barnett was appointed by the Governor to the Florida Council on Arts and Culture which speaks to her passion for expanding the influence of art museums in our State and beyond.
“As we enter our exciting next chapter, our future has never looked brighter,” said Dr. H. Alexander Rich, Executive Director and Chief Curator of The AGB. “This incredible gift will enhance the Museum’s capacity to deliver outstanding exhibitions and extensive educational programs, attract and retain top talent, and continue our abiding mission to offer exceptional arts and arts education experiences for every person who walks through our doors for generations to come.”

Do I Even Need to Say This?
Do I need to tell you that you shouldn’t shoot politicians? I don’t think I have to. I don’t think I need to.
Unless you’ve been living under an elephant’s butt over the past month, you already know somebody tried (and failed) to assassinate Donald Trump.
Do I really need to tell you this was a bad thing? That trying to kill a politician is wrong, both morally and legally.
Again, I don’t think this is something I really need to tell people. Because I’m sure they already know that. I’m sure you, the person reading this column, already know that.
And, honestly, even if you are the type of person who needs to be told that the attempted assassination of a politician is bad, I don’t think you really cared to begin with and nothing I will say will change your mind.
It’s like telling someone it’s wrong to steal candy from babies. Or to run over little old ladies with your vehicle. Or to not wipe your butt and wash your hands after using the toilet. Or to lie, cheat, steal, kill, or rape in general.
Project 2025. (Memo to self: write a column on Project 2025.)
Look, it’s quite apparent I’m not a fan of Trump. Never was. Never will be. Anyone who’s read this column for as long as I’ve been writing it will know that. I don’t like Trump. I think he’s bad. So, he gets no sympathy from me.
Even then, I don’t think he should have been shot. Because I don’t think he should be killed. At the very least, he should lose the upcoming election. At the most, he should be jailed for all of the crimes he’s committed and been convicted of. Because he’s a convicted felon. And if felons can’t vote, they shouldn’t be running for office. Period.
And, really, what did shooting the guy actually accomplish? If anything, it only motivated his already fanatic base to support him even more.
Seriously, have you seen Republicans walking around with bandages on their ears to show their solidarity with him? And they thought walking around in public with masks was ridiculous!
1. MUSIC: Which folk-rock group produced many of the songs in the movie “The Graduate”?
2. GEOGRAPHY: Which European capital is known as “The Eternal City”?
3. LANGUAGE: What does the Latin prefix “acri-” mean in English?
4. TELEVISION: Lenny and Squiggy are the annoying neighbors in which TV comedy?
5. MONEY: What is the basic currency in Guatemala?
6. CARS: What animal is found on the Porsche car logo?
7. FOOD & DRINK: Which country is associated with the soup dish pho?
8. LITERATURE: In which U.S. state is the novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God” set?
9. MYTHOLOGY: What is the home of the Greek gods called?
10. AD SLOGANS: What product is advertised with the slogan, “You’re not you when you’re hungry”?
Quetzal.
“Laverne & Shirley.”
“Sharp” (e.g. “acrimonious”).
Rome, Italy.
Simon & Garfunkel.
Seriously, if you are the type of person who needs to be told all that, who needs to have the difference between right and wrong explained to them, chances are you’re a very young child or a psychopath.
Because who else needs to have all that explained to them? Because it’s apparent all of that is wrong. Because trying to shoot and kill politicians is wrong. Yes, that includes bad politicians. And, yes, that includes Trump.
And let’s get real: Trump is a bad politician. He was bad when he was running for President. He was bad when he served as President for four years. And he will be bad if he serves as President for another four years. Especially if he succeeds in becoming dictator for life thanks to
And have you heard televangelists preaching how Trump narrowly evaded a bullet because God “protected” him? That it was all a “sign from God”? That blood on the right ear is a “visible mark of consecration” signifying that the person is “dedicated to God’s service.”
Forget the cringeworthy Last Supper drag show performed before the Olympics. Claiming Trump is a “righteous martyr” is far more sacrilegious and blasphemous to the Christian faith. To my faith! Where was I going with this? Oh, yeah! Trump is bad. Trying to kill Trump was bad. Everything is just bad. Need I elaborate anymore?

• Ever had to deal with early arrivals at your garage sale? If so, you know it can be annoying and disruptive. When advertising your sale, use the block number instead of your house number. Still easy to find, but you’re less likely to get staked out.
• “It’s hard to find a good contractor or company to provide a service sometimes. The best resource I’ve had is friends. Whenever someone I know has work done at their home or purchases an item I might be interested in, I always find out the details of who worked on it or where it was purchased and whether my friends were satisfied with the outcome. Friends and even acquaintances usually are quite amenable to giving details, especially when they are either very pleased or very displeased with a job.” -- R.E. in New York

Veterinarian of the Month
When Loren Nations graduated from Winter Haven High School in 1981 his dreams of becoming an influential veterinarian in a big city would follow many paths. After graduating from UF with his veterinary degree in 1991 he completed a medical and surgical internship at the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan, NY considered the Johns Hopkins of veterinary medicine. Instead of remaining in New York City he returned home to practice “big city” medicine with his mentor Dr. John Maxwell.
Dr. Nations’ desire to help animals and commitment to practice at the highest level led to specialty board certification in canine and feline practice, one of only 425 ABVP diplomats in the country and 27 in the state. With this expertise, the practice has flourished into a seven doctor 24 hour emergency and critical care hospital, specialty referral center, and general practice. Dr. Nations has devoted his life to creating a center that will improve our pet’s lives for years to come.
The completion of a state-of-the-art 10,000 square foot veterinary center is only the beginning of the medical advancements Dr. Nations hopes to bring to Central Florida. “My life revolves around my family and animals. They are one and the same, that is who I am and why I am so passionate about being a veterinarian.”
