TID BITS TRACEY’S
By Tracey Greene
European Adventure: Welcome to the Amalfi Coast
The adventure continues. This part of my European family vacation was almost too beautiful for words. It began as our car service drove us about three hours from Naples to a little fishing village, Nerano, where we stayed in a cute villa for the next 4 days; a perfect space for the family to spread out complete with its own quaint outdoor space and small combo pool/hot tub. Staying in a small village instead of a main more touristy city saved us a lot of money AND, I felt as if you not only got to see a little of how their day-to-day lives were spent, but you also got to support the village with tourist dollars to keep (it) Nerano thriving. Our vacation was in the Campania region which is in Southern Italy. We all know that Italy is shaped like a boot. We were at the front of the boot kind of where your ankle would be. It’s known for beauty; dramatic coastlines between mountains, cliffs and the deep blue Tyrrhenian Sea. Our first day, we ventured out to what was described by our concierge as a private beach for the villas in our area. It was only 128 steps away! That’s great! However, you must remember that Italy is not flat like Florida. So those mere 128 steps were actually straight down the side of a small mountain. At the bottom, it opened up to a picturesque secluded beach area complete with lounge chairs at the water’s edge and a little café preparing fresh lunch dishes and Peach Bellini’s perfect to quench your thirst on
a warm summer day. First lunch was the Ravioli of the Day, Bruschetta, a Peach Bellini and then we shared a small pitcher of white wine which included fresh peeled peaches in it. A nice treat to eat after; drunken peaches. Later that day we explored the rest of the village all the way down to the water’s edge where lots of local shops, a market, restaurants and the public beach is located. This was the community hub complete with what I call – the “village” dogs. The same 6 to 8 dogs were in the area each day. From sun up until sun down, people go to work, and their dogs or cats just hang out around the hub enjoying lazy days here and there. You would see water bowls scattered around the area; cats commandeering restaurant
chairs, dogs laying on porches or close to where their owners worked. As an animal lover, I loved seeing this…to me, it showed another side of this village, the family side, this is where they, along with their animals, live and play. Each morning, we enjoyed walking down into the village for expresso, cappuccino – hot tea for me – and the fresh baked croissants: almond, marmalade and chocolate. Sometimes, I couldn’t choose so I ate two! What a magical way to begin each day. From the village, the best way to visit other areas along the Amalfi Coast is by water taxi. It’s not only a great value but incredibly beautiful. Our family of six booked a water taxi to take us to the famous Positano! You pay one price for the day letting your captain know what time you want to leave from the
dock and what time you want to be picked up from the destination of the day. Our captain had a fun personality and was thoughtful to tell us points of interest along the way. He stopped to show us several historical landmarks and cliffs that glistened with a purple hue as water trickled down and sunlight danced about. And then on to Positano…there she is! With colorful houses stacked up the cliffside against a vibrant blue sky and rock mounds and the sea all around – it is quite the mental picture to take in as the captain slowly merges his boat with the dock for all to unload. While in Postiano, we enjoyed a lazy day under umbrella lounge chairs close to the pebble shoreline –

yes, pebbles! They do not have sand as we Floridians are used to, so water shoes are a must when enjoying the beaches along the coast. We also toured the little shops and vine covered alley ways as well as the market – oh, the Italian markets. Yes, they are great for the usual market needs along with the freshly made deli sandwiches on crusty baguettes, wonderful chocolates, nuts, olives, wines and the most beautiful produce – lemons so big they dwarf our grapefruits! We closed out our day with a late lunch at Ristorante La Pergola. Of course, another seafood pasta dish and a glass of rose for me. The food threads for my entire trip to Italy was PASTA! Mostly seafood pasta, rosé wine and gelato…I was in food heaven! On a different day we booked another adventure by boat. This time we enjoyed a boat tour for the day as we made our way to the Isle of Capri. The beautiful wooden boat came complete with a captain and one crew member as well as a cooler with a variety of beverages, bottled water and several bottles of sparkling wine. Now this is the way to take an adventure by water! There was plenty of room for the family to spread out. For this trip, the captain is more of a tour guide and tells of all history and landmarks as we made our way towards Capri. He stopped to show us the entrance to the famous Blue Grotto where the sea glows an electric blue and, at one point, he anchored at a popular area for everyone to take a dip in the cool water. My brother and nieces also enjoyed jumping into the water from the (low) cliffs. As we continued on towards Capri, the views again were breath taking. Huge rock formations sprung from the sea standing tall all around and jagged cliffs that encased a little house, resort or restaurant sprinkled here and there. Who else enjoyed the coastline of Capri? The super-rich and the famous. Many yachts were anchored around Capri leaving everyone wondering who was enjoying their summer at the island’s coastline. We did find out that one yacht was owned by the Victoria Secrets owner. A more traditional blue and white yacht. What supermodels and other rich famous people came to play around Capri that day? Inquiring minds wanted to know…to get to Capri from your boat the captain must call up a dingy to meet you and drive you the rest of the way to the dock. Once was there we enjoyed a wonderful lunch at the city's first restaurant overlooking the bay. We then made our way around the little shops buying a few trinkets to remind us of our trip and then it was back to our boat waiting to continue on around the coastline. As the day neared its end and we made our way back to our little fishing village, Nerano, we knew our time on the coast was coming to an end. The next day we would head out early again to catch another flight, back to England, leaving behind this little slice of paradise. I would really love to visit this little fishing village again someday; back to the warm inviting people, the “village” dogs, the food and the lovely views. “Grazie Mille”

1. Name the female artist who in 1969 was the first to release “Easy Come, Easy Go.”
Something for Mama.” Bobby Sherman covered the song the next year.
Since this is my first column, let me introduce myself. My name is James. Call me Jimmy! I’m 31 years old. That makes me a millennial. That also means I’m ruining everything you know and love! Countless businesses from Applebee’s® to Hooters are dropping dead like flies, and the culprits responsible are millennials (people born between 1980 and 2000) like myself. Every day, headlines accuse ‘those darn kids’ of killing everything and anything. Malls. Golf. Diamonds. Motorcycles. Even napkins! I must confess. They’re onto us! When we’re not binge-watching cat videos or swiping left on Tinder, we millennials are plotting the destruction of entire industries. Every Thursday at noon, we take a break from our busy schedules eating our avocado toast to host secret teleconferences, discussing which business to destroy next. (Today, Sears®. Tomorrow, Toy R Us. And then the world! Mwa-ha-ha!) Of course, that’s not happening. Millennials aren’t ‘ruining’ anything. We don’t have the money to do so. Contrary to what old geezers say, we ‘lazy’ millennials aren’t gazing at our phones all day. We’re actually working twice as hard as our parents and grandparents, even though we’re earning much less than them. Statistically, we’re earning 20 percent less than past generations. Add the crushing weight of student debt, and that leaves us with less money to spend. So if businesses fail, it’s because they can’t meet our more frugal spending habits. Don’t blame us. Blame the economy! For example, millennials are allegedly ‘killing’ department stores and shopping malls. But why bother spending gas money driving miles to buy a Captain America™ tee at FYE when I can have it delivered to my doorstep with free shipping and handling by ordering it online? We’re also apparently ‘destroying’ chain restaurants like Hooters. But why should I waste my money eating substandard chicken wings and ogling scantily-clad sweater puppies

when I can order better, cheaper wings from WingStreet® and admire the female form through a Google search? (That’s all hypothetical, of course!) We millennials may be ‘killing’ old businesses, but we’re also supporting new businesses by embracing new technology. We may not buy new cars, but we’re hailing cabs with ride-sharing services like Uber. We may not go on many vacations, but we’re renting places with home-sharing services like Airbnb. And we might not be eating out at resturaunts, but we’re cooking our own meals at home using food delivery services like Blue Apron. In fact, as much as millennials are blamed for ‘ruining’ some businesses, we’re not credited enough for saving others. For example, bookstores were once assumed to be dying off due to e-books. That must have been because millennials prefer to read our tablets rather than pick up a book, right? Quite the opposite! Millennials actually prefer physical books over e-books. That’s probably why new bookstores have been opening up recently. (Book-loving Baby Boomers? You’re welcome!) Even if old businesses do die out, that’s not our fault. That’s just progress. New technology replaces old tech, and new businesses replace older ones. That’s the way it’s always been. If ‘millennials’ existed back in the 1900s, we would have been blamed for ‘ruining’ the horse and buggy industry. “Those darn kids are killing off buggy whips with their new-fangled horseless carriages!” Millennials don’t ‘kill’ businesses. Old businesses cause their own demise by failing to meet the demands of new customers. That’s the free market in action! When faced with changing times, businesses have two choices: either adapt and change, or stay the same and die off. I guess for some, it’s easier just to blame ‘those darn kids!’ QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS Info@todayandtonight.com OCTOBER 2018

THE FEDERAL BAR Vintage Vibe and Historic Fun
By Amy Sumerlin Photos By Chris Douglas “I fell in love with the building,” said Kara Simm, who co-owns one of downtown Lakeland’s newest and coolest hangouts, The Federal Bar, with her husband, Stuart. The Simms didn’t come from the restaurant industry – rather, as owners of a Lakeland-based home and commercial building inspection business, it is buildings they know: “And we knew this would make a great bar,” she continued. They were right. THE BUILDING Construction of the Federal Building was completed in 1919. The onestory Georgian Revival style building, designed by James A. Wetmore, was Lakeland’s first free-standing post office, and remained that for several decades. Later, it housed various federal offices, including the IRS and Lawton Chiles’ office when he was a US Senator. The City of Lakeland has owned the building since 2005, when it was transferred through the Historic Surplus Property Program. The City invested over $1 million in its restoration, including the replacement of what was then a crumbling roof. The project was completed in 2015. Another $1 million-plus in upgrades was made by Broadway Real Estate Services, the Lakeland developer that obtained a 30-year lease in February 2016 and

subleases to The Federal Bar. “Our experience in the construction business definitely made the build out process easier,” she remembered. “All construction was completed in just six months.” That construction process kept all of the details that make the building special – exposed brick, wood rafters, classic archways. Vintage whiskey barrels and a gilded, life-size statue of Jack Daniels add to the historic-but-fun ambience. A separate event space, “The Bureau”, is available to rent for private functions, and features beautiful leather furniture. The Federal Bar opened May 19. A GREAT BUSINESS “My husband is from England, and we travel a lot, so we knew what makes a great restaurant,” she explained. “We wanted it to be kid friendly, a fun atmosphere, with fantastic entertainment and easy comfort food.” And while the Simms were new to the hospitality industry, their experience as entrepreneurs taught them what it takes to run a successful business: Surround yourself with talented, experienced people. Head Chef Paige Licari came to The Federal Bar from Posto 9 and has helped to tweak the menu. Bar Manager Lindsay Delaney came from the Outback chain of restaurants.

ENTERTAINMENT The plan for The Federal, which is already well underway, is for it to be a showcase for a broad spectrum of musical talent, drawing acts from throughout Tampa Bay and Orlando. Check out their Facebook page for a full schedule; “we have live music every weekend,” she said. EATING (AND DRINKING) AT THE FEDERAL If you read my article from August, you know that I checked out Mojo Federal Swine & Spirits and as I was doing so, eyed its next-door neighbor – in the same building – The Federal Bar. You know I had to try it, too. I decided to try it one Thursday evening with my hubby. It won’t be my last time there. Emerson was our waiter. He was bright, friendly, and at our table before I had even set my purse down. He pointed out that it was Happy Hour until 8 and that meant the Chardonnay I was requesting was only $3! And by the way, the wine is on tap. Huh? This concept was new to me but I quickly became a fan. I now know that kegged wines eliminate a great deal of waste. The stainless steel kegs provide an entirely inert environment, so the wine inside doesn’t age, and the wines require less sulfur dioxide for

preservation. If a wine requires a little wood or tank aging before serving, it’s done prior to kegging. It also eliminates the potential for a poorly re-corked bottle, which would go bad way before its time. The idea of “no waste” is very important to Simms. Fruit left over at the end of an evening? It becomes brine. But back to the wine. I Iike wine. I have done the tour in Napa and I have an 18 bottle cooler in my home. The Chardonnay I tried at The Federal – I believe Emerson said it was Italian Benetto – was oaky, buttery, and truly the best Chardonnay I have ever had. Did I mention it was $3 during Happy Hour? Hubby isn’t the wine fan I am, but their impressive full bar, which had his favorite Scotch and a long list of both Domestic and craft beers, made him quite happy. In case you’re wondering if we ever got around to eating, we did. I chose the Blind Barbacoa Bowl ($10.95), which features barbacoa beef, brown rice, quinoa, pickled red onions, avocado crème, corn, federal slaw, and cotija cheese. I’m still on my low-carb kick, so they eliminated the rice and quinoa for me, and added lettuce. The taste was delightful – just spicy enough – and a very generous serving. Hubby chose the Bootlegger Mac and Cheese Skillet ($10.95), which is available in four versions – caramelized onion and feta, barbacoa beef and jalapeno, bacon and bleu, or smoked bbq pork. He chose the barbacoa beef and jalapeno. It too had just the right amount of spice, he said, in between bites. And despite the fact that both meals were generous, we cleaned our plates. Next time we venture that way, it will be on a Sunday so we can try their Sunday brunch, which begins every week at 11 AM. That menu includes sausage, bacon, or barbacoa breakfast tacos; sausage gravy and biscuits; Belgian waffle sticks with madefrom-scratch dipping sauces; breakfast eggrolls, and more. In case you’re not feeling too great from partying the night before, try The Federal, which is “our tried and true Hangover Cure,” said Simm: Sausage gravy and biscuits topped with home fries, a fried egg and breakfast eggrolls. In fact, I may even try it this Sunday. Will I see you there? FMI: The Federal Bar, 124 S Tennessee Ave, Lakeland. (863) 816-3968. federalbarlakeland.com

JIMMY'S
VINTAGE ~ Music Shop ~ W
by James Coulter
hile on tour earlier this summer, Joe Bonamassa, world-famous blues guitar player, decided to drop by a little shop in the little town of Auburndale. Often he would go on “safari hunts” in search of top-quality instruments, all in hopes of walking out with a prize hunt. He stayed for a good hour to spin his tall tales of previous “safaris” and overall had a good time. “I have seen a lot of vintage stores, and I have been into a lot of vintage stores, but this is a real store that has vintage,” the store owner, Jimmy Boreson, quoted him as saying. Stepping into Jimmy’s Vintage Music in Auburndale, one can easily see what impressed the blues musician, what with the overall vast collection of vintage guitars and amps. “I have vintage from one end to the other with stuff scattered around, no rhyme or reason, just scattered around,” Jimmy said. “And they love that. They love that they can walk in and just start going through things that brings them back to the stores from the 1970s and 1980s.” Jimmy has been playing guitar ever since he was young, and he has been collecting and trading them for the past 20 years. During that time, his personal collection grew to the point where he could barely keep them in his home anymore. “I finally ran myself out of the house,” he said. “Basically, my wife told me to get some sort of store going or else we won’t be able to live here anymore.” 18 OCTOBER 2018
Following his wife’s advice, he decided to open Jimmy’s Vintage Music in 2014. Though some of his merchandise is from out of the country, and some of them are relatively brand new, everything else are top-quality vintage instruments made in the good-old USA. Every guitar within his shop he has received by collecting, selling, and trading personally. Jimmy doesn’t believe in shipping his merchandise to customers. He’d prefer that they drop by his shop and take a close look at them for themselves—to try before they buy. “We had realized that all the local shops had disappeared from the landscape so we hoped to provide a place where musicians and collectors could experience what we grew up with and took for granted in the 70’s and 80’s,” his website states. “A place to go and actually try a guitar or amp instead of buying online!” While big corporate box stores try to sell all of the latest cutting-edge merchandise, Jimmy focuses on selling items that are vintage and rare, offering

his customers old-fashioned products through old-fashioned mom-and-pop service. “Now people are getting tired of those big box stores and it is coming back,” he said. “That is basically what I see... people are getting tired of that now, and they want to go back to the old brick-and-mortar mom-and-pop stores.” Such dedication to old-fashioned service within the high-tech era has attracted many new and loyal customers. Some of them have traveled far and wide to drop by the store and see what it has to offer. Local musician David Kenny has been playing guitar since he was a teenager growing up in the 1980s. As a collector of vintage guitar, he loves the variety that Jimmy’s offers with instruments going as far back as the 1940s and 1950s. This is why he’s been a regular customer since the store first opened four years ago. “I love top-quality American guitars, whether they are old or new, and he always has a good collection,” he said. “You will find stuff
in his store that you won’t find anywhere else.” Other regular customers include local legends such as Jim Stafford and Keith Meyers, as well as big name stars such as Les Dudek from The Allman Brothers Band and Fran Sheehan from Boston. His success over the past four years has been due to his commitment to honesty. As a salesman who believes that a man’s word and handshake is his honor, he believes in only offering a fair deal. As such, when customers come in for the first time, not only can they expect a vast collection of vintage instruments and amps produced within their great country, but they can expect to be sold and traded at a fair price, especially when the merchandise being offered in the deal is their own. “I believe in personal honest service where we can be very fair with somebody’s vintage instrument,” he said. “People have come in and wanted so much for an instrument, and many times I told them they need more than that.” Jimmy is always fair.

Abigail Adams uses to implore her husband “to remember the ladies” that sings through generations of women and is relevant in these dark days of political unrest. Her words ask for consideration, representation and generosity, virtues that continue to be important today. An interesting note, John Adams famously wrote in response to her letter women were already in control, and if men were to lose their authority, they would be subject to the “despotism of the petticoat.” John and Abigail were the first to recognize the balance needed in both political arenas and the affairs of the heart. Like Abigail, I have trouble reconciling my thoughts and voice on the current state of affairs. The Me Too Movement is providing a platform for women to push back. However, these difficult questions will never be answered. Agreeing with points on both sides of the issue, I have failed to make a resolute decision. As I type these words, perhaps that is the enduring wisdom of Abigail Adams. She was not asking for absolute power, just for her voice to be heard. In 2018, these conversations demonstrate the need for balance and that is the most powerful outcome of this public discourse. Right or wrong, left or right, those decisions really do not matter as long as the discussion is allowed to occur. Though painful, respecting the need for discourse between men and women is essential to our democracy and growth as a society. While agreement may never be achieved, we need to allow space for these conversations to occur providing a direction for the next generation. Balancing the scales with social evolution is the wiser course. QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS info@todayandtonight.com OCTOBER 2018

Classic Albums Live The Doors - La Woman L.A. Woman is the sixth studio album by the American rock band the Doors, released on April 19, 1971, on Elektra Records. It is the last to feature the group's lead singer, Jim Morrison, who died three months after the album's release. It saw the band continue to integrate elements of blues back into their music, a direction begun with their previous album, Morrison Hotel. It was also recorded without record producer Paul A. Rothchild after he fell out with the group over the perceived lack of quality of their studio performances. Subsequently, the band co-produced the album with longtime sound engineer Bruce Botnick. Classic Albums Live takes classic albums and recreates them live, on stage - note for note, cut for cut.
