What Does The Fox Say? Normally I use this column to rant about politics. Since this month is my birthday (Jan. 26), I’d like to treat myself by writing about something I actually like. So allow me to gush over a completely random obsession of mine: foxes. I like foxes. They’re one of my favorite animals. I know most people consider wolves their favorite wild canines. I like wolves, too. But they’re overrated. Foxes are underrated. That makes them cooler. What’s not to like about foxes? They’re so adorable. They have cute pointy ears and noses, cute fluffy tails, and their fur is red, so beautiful, like an angel in disguise. (What does the fox say?) You know who else likes foxes? Disney. Many of their best characters are foxes. (Perhaps that’s why they purchased 20th Century Fox?) Todd from Fox And The Hound. Nick Wilde from Zootopia. And, of course, Maid Marian and Robin Hood. When most young people like me think of the famous thief who steals from the rich to give to the poor, we don’t think of Errol Flynn. We think of the cartoon fox from the 1973 Disney movie. In fact, try searching “Maid Marian” on Google Image Search. Guess who gets the top image results? Not Olivia de Havilland. Not Uma Thurman. It’s the cartoon vixen from the Disney movie. And can you blame her? Her fur is red. So beautiful! Like an angel in disguise. (Sorry! Song’s stuck in my head.) Foxes are cool creatures with cool abilities. Did you know they hunt using magnets? It’s true! Scientists have discovered that foxes use the Earth’s magnetic field to track their prey. According to Mental Floss, “the fox can see the earth’s magnetic field as a ‘ring of shadow’ on its eyes that darkens as it heads towards [the] magnetic north. When the shadow and the sound the prey is making

line up, it’s time to pounce.” How cool is that? Foxes also make great parents. Once fox cubs are born, their parents look after them for seven months. In fact, as the Daily Mail reported, one fox pup was trapped in a wire trap for two weeks, but was kept alive by its mother bringing it food until it was released. Now that foxy lady deserves to be called “Mother Of The Year”! Unfortunately, foxes are also hated. There’s a reason why it’s bad to have the “fox guarding the henhouse.” However, while foxes do chase chickens, they also eat pests like rodents, small insects, and rabbits. Like snakes, they’re unfairly hated and feared by people despite helping balance the ecosystem. They’re also commonly associated with rabies. However, foxes rarely go rabid. According to the CDC, foxes only account for 7% of rabies cases, while bats make up the most at 32%. Yet we love Batman. Why not foxes? Foxes are often maligned as tricksters. In folklore, they’re depicted as sly, cunning, and conniving. But you know what that makes them? Smart. We champion heroes who outsmart their foes, but it’s bad when a fox does it? If a fox “outfoxes” you, is it really their fault? That just means they were smarter than you! (As Nick would say, “it’s called a ‘hustle’, sweetie!”) So, yeah. Foxes are smart. Foxes are cool. And they’re so cute and fluffy I want to die! Their fur is red. So beautiful. Like an angel in disguise. So what does the fox say? The fox says…“Taxation is theft!” (Or at least that’s what Robin Hood would say!) Oh, and…Ring-ding-ding-dingdingeringeding! QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS Info@todayandtonight.com JANUARY 2020

U.S. Quidditch South Regional

ChampionshiP by James Coulter Do you love Harry Potter? Would you like to experience more of the magic from the books, movies, and theme park? Well be prepared to see a game spring to life from out of the pages with the upcoming US Quidditch South Regional Championship. Being hosted in February in Haines City, this tournament will bring players from all over the country to compete in a game that most people have only seen played in the pages of a book or on the big screen. Watch as players fly on broomsticks—or rather, pretend to fly—as they chase after balls, dodge balls thrown at them, and chase after the golden flying snitch. Teams from all over the country will be competing from colleges such as the University of Florida, University of Central Florida, and University of South Carolina. The Regional Championships, hosted by US Quidditch, has been held for several years at Lake Myrtle Sports Park. It will now be hosted at the new Feltrim Sports Village in Balmoral Resort. “You don’t often see a private facility, let alone one that has a resort attached to it being able to work with outside groups like ours,” said Mary Kimball, executive director for US Quidditch. “So we are really excited to work more closely, and we really appreciate that they are working so much to help make this event a success, and it will be a wonderful weekend.” FROM PAGES TO TURF Based on the fictional game from Harry Potter, quidditch is a magical sport played by two teams on flying broomsticks and enchanted balls. Similar to rugby or soccer, the goal of the game is for each team to score points by passing the main ball from one side of the field to the other. Quidditch involves four types of players: Chasers, who chase the main ball, or “quaffle”, from their side of their field to their opponent’s goal; Keepers, who protect their team’s goal from their opponents; Beaters, who use bats to beat another ball, or “bludger”, at their opponents; and Seekers, who hunt a magical golden ball called a “snitch” for extra points. Once the golden snitch has been caught, the game is over, and the team that caught it wins. “There is a lot going on at a quidditch game at one time,” Kimball said. “It is like rugby with a stick between your legs while they play dodgeball and 18 minutes in they are playing capture the flag with some wrestling thrown in.” Obviously, since the game within the book involves magic, the real-life version is much different. For one thing, the game does not involve players playing with magical balls or flying on broom18 JANUARY 2020

sticks. Instead, they use ordinary balls and pretend to fly on broomsticks. The snitch, rather than being a magic flying ball, is instead a ball attached to a tail worn by a person and chased after like Capture The Flag. Also, bludgers are not hit by bats like in baseball, but are tossed around like dodgeballs. With so much going on, the game is very intense and fast-paced, making it as exciting to watch as it is to play, Kimball said. Quidditch has been adapted many times in real life. The current and most prominent version, as played by US Quidditch, was created at Middlebury College in Vermont. This game, through the association, is played at over 100 col-

leges around the country and on every single continent, Kimball said. More than simply being a fun game based on a popular book series, quidditch has especially become popular due to it being one of the few mixed-gender sports, allowing players of any gender or gender identity to play together. “I think it sticks to the dedication of our community,” Kimball said. “The world needs a mixed-gender sport, and the things we are doing really can make an impact and create a better culture of sports around the world. So it’s thanks to those people that we are still here, because they believe in what we are doing.”

Stay on your broomsticks. In Quidditch, you must hold your broomsticks between your legs at all times with one hand on the broomstick.

Use four balls. In Quidditch, you need four balls to play. There is one volleyball, known as the quaffle. There are two dodgeballs, known as the bludgers. There is one small ball, such as a tennis ball, that is strapped to one player. This is the snitch.

A NEW PLACE TO PLAY AND STAY The Regional Quidditch Championship is being hosted at the new Feltrim Sports Village, located in Balmoral Resort in Haines City. Opened on December, the $4 million sports facility includes a championship-level turf field and adjacent practice field for sports such as football and soccer. Also included are 2,500 stadium seats and building for bathrooms and concession stand. Feltrim Sports Village will undergo several expansions over the next few years. Their latest expansion will include a volleyball complex, the second largest sand volleyball complex in the I-4 corridor. Also planned is a 65,000 square foot indoor sports arena with 2,500 seats, luxury seating, and Jumbotron screen. The third phase will include a public charter school to teach students ninth to twelfth grade, catering to more than 836 local children. Aside from traditional sports such as soccer, football, and volleyball, Feltrim Sports Village also seeks to host events and tournaments for other games like corn hole and Quidditch. Being able to host a wide variety of sports and games allows the facility to support the local community in more ways than one, explained Mike Botkin, spokesperson for Feltrim Group. “We are excited to finally be opening and we are looking forward to catering to the local community and the region and being a one-stop shop facility,” he said. Botkin himself had learned about Quidditch from Kimball, who had stayed at the resort last year while attending the regional championship in another facility in the area. When she learned that a sports facility was EXPECT MORE... GET MORE... WE DELIVER!

being built within the resort, she contacted Botkin to discuss the possibility of hosting the championships there. “She saw at the time [when it was still being constructed]...that we had the making of something great going on,” Botkin said. Botkin wants to provide convenience for families and athletes of all kinds, allowing them a place to not only play their games but also stay, rest, and eat. By building it within their resort, they ensure that guests won’t have to travel far from where they stay to where they play, he said. “Expectations are that we fill a need that’s there,” Botkin said. “That is our goal for this facility is to have the best experience for the participants who are here.” As for the Quidditch tournament, Harry Potter fans can expect to see a game from their favorite series brought to life, while regular sports fans can expect a fast-paced game with plenty of action, Kimball said. “They can expect to be thrilled by everything going on, and they can expect to be heartened by the community that we created,” she said. “We should be providing a space for all backgrounds and identities to be competition together, it is an ideal that we are all commited to.” US Quidditch South Regional Championship will be hosted from Feb. 14 – Feb. 16 at Feltrim Sports Village, located in Balmoral Resort at 124 Kenny Boulevard, Haines City, FL 33844. For more information, visit their website at: www.usquidditch.org

Learn how to score points. Players attempt to get the quaffle (volleyball) through the hoops on the ends of the field. Getting a quaffle through a hoop means 10 points. Other way to score points is to catch the snitch by grabbing the ball attached to the player carrying it. The team that catches the snitch gets 30 points. The quaffle can be passed between players on the same team.

Learn how the bludgers work. Players on opposing teams throw bludgers at one another. If someone is hit by a bludger, they must dismount their broomstick and tag one of the hoops on the end of the field before they can return to the game.

Call penalties as needed. In Quidditch, there is always one ref The following can result in a penalty: Not keeping your broomstick in position (i.e., between your legs with one hand on the stick) is a foul. Failing to dismount a broomstick and tag a hoop after being hit with a bludger is a foul. If any player besides the seeker touches the snitch, this is a foul. Any kind of rough playing, such as shoving or hitting, may result in a foul.

Dark Sky Festival & Star Party Returns To Bok Tower Gardens Special to T&T Mag Explore the skies by the light of the Milky Way at the Dark Sky Festival & Star Party at Bok Tower Gardens on Saturday, January 25. The festival is included in general admission and is free to members. Speakers begin at 4 P.M., and the gate closes at 9:30 P.M. Highlights of the festival include learning about the night sky with leading astronomers, nocturnal animal encounters, costumed characters, Orlando Science Center discovery stations, and a special astronomy-inspired carillon concert. This year’s stellar line-up of scientists will discuss a variety of topics, including space exploration and the mysteries of the universe. Local astronomers will have telescopes on display for stargazing, and Star Wars-inspired characters from the 501 Legion will also be joining the out-of-this-world fun! ABOUT LIGHT POLLUTION AND THE EFFECTS OF SKYGLOW According to the International DarkSky Association (IDA), more than 80% of the world's population experiences light-polluted skies, and 99% of Americans are experiencing the harmful effects. Darkness not only adds to the aesthetic qualities of the wildness, but it EXPECT MORE... GET MORE... WE DELIVER!

also is essential to the health of wildlife and humans. Central Florida is listed as one of the world’s hot spots for artificial light pollution. In anticipation of the festival, an IDA representative measured the level of artificial light above Bok Tower Gardens. The Gardens are only three points higher than the darkest spot on the globe, and the Milky Way was visible to the naked eye. Throughout history, humans have evolved to the rhythm of sunlit days and nights known as circadian rhythm or more commonly known as a “biological clock.” However, with the spread of artificial lighting, most humans no longer experience darkness. Research published by Harvard University suggests that artificial light (especially blue LED lighting) at night can negatively affect human health, increasing risks for obesity, depression, sleep disorders, diabetes, breast cancer, and more. From a health perspective, exposure to light pollution has been found to reduce the production of the hormone Melatonin, which induces sleep, boosts the immune system, lowers cholesterol, and helps the functioning of the thyroid, pancreas, ovaries, testes and adrenal glands. The dark-sky movement aims to educate about the importance of suppressing light pollution and celebrating the wonder of our solar system and beyond.

REVERSING HOLIDAY WEIGHT GAIN

Which Diet Is The Best? By Amy Sumerlin

It’s an American tradition: We spend a month bingeing on cookies, cocktails, and stuffing, and on January 1, Resolution #1 is to somehow find our way back into the skinny jeans, pronto. But How? But let’s face it — there’s a wildly overwhelming amount of information on the Internet about how to get in shape, and this endless amount of advice – including many new trends – can be just plain confusing. A new fad diet seems to pop up every day. Let’s look at a couple. GOING MEATLESS: THE PLANT BASED CRAZE Vegans and vegetarians have been around seemingly forever, but the term “Plant-based” is newer to the weight loss conversation. In fact, you may have first heard about it this year when Burger King introduced their Impossible Burger. Since then, sales for meatless beef, meatless chicken, egg-less eggs, and dairyfree dairy are booming, spiking more than 11% compared to 2018. What’s it all mean? Vegans abstain from eating animal byproducts. Vegetarians don’t consume meat. “Plant-based” is more flexible; it doesn’t mean you never eat meat or dairy, just that you choose some of your foods from plant sources. You could give plant-based a whirl on Meatless Monday, for example. MEATLESS MONDAYS You may think going meatless one day per week is something new, but no. During World War I, Woodrow Wilson asked Americans to eat meatless one day per week and then one meatless meal each day to reduce consumption of key staples and avoid rationing. This newest iteration, Meatless Monday, isn’t new, either. Launched in 2003, Meatless Monday is a non-profit initiative of The Monday Campaigns. This campaign works in collaboration with the Center for a Livable Future (CLF) at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. They believe that going meatless once a week may reduce the risk of conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity. Additionally, they say that a Meatless Monday should reduce our carbon footprint and save resources including fossil fuels and fresh water. WHERE TO GO IF YOU WANT TO (TRY) EATING MEAT FREE FAST FOOD I already mentioned Burger King’s Impossible Whopper. While I have not tried it myself, friends I know who have tried it say that it looks and tastes remarkably like a “real” Whopper, down to the

new year, new you signature BK sear marks. The launch of this burger was remarkably successful – so much so that BK has announced that it will be testing three additional meatless burgers in select markets. If you are more of a Hardee’s fan, stay tuned. In October, they rolled out a couple of plant-based items (a Beyond Thickburger and a Beyond Sausage Biscuit for breakfast) in select markets – and if successful, will roll out nationwide. If you got excited when I said breakfast, head to Dunkin’ now. They are the first nationwide fast food restaurant to offer the Beyond Breakfast Sausage sandwich. According to their website, the Beyond Sausage Sandwich has 29% less total fat, 33% less saturated fat and fewer calories, cholesterol and sodium than a traditional Dunkin’ Sausage, Egg and Cheese Breakfast Sandwich.

butter, and chocolate almond milk. 371 3rd St. NW, Winter Haven. (863) 280-6346.

WHAT’S IN THIS STUFF? The Beyond Breakfast Sausage, for example, is made of peas, mung beans, rice and sunflower to provide the protein and coconut oil to provide juiciness.

ANOTHER TREND TO LOOK AT: INTERMITTENT FASTING

AND WHEN YOU DON’T WANT FAST FOOD, HIT THESE SPOTS BLACK & BREW I love this coffee house/bistro just for its vibe, but it also offers great options to be meatless for a meal. The Veggie Medley sandwich has Gorgonzola cheese and a host of yummy veggies including pickled red & green peppers, pressed on ciabatta bread. Or, try a grown-up grilled cheese with spinach, caramelized red onions, white cheddar, and Gorgonzola. Yum! They also have several soup options that are completely vegetarian. 205 E Main St, Lakeland. (863) 682-1210. THE JUICE BOX One of my friends swears by this place. Think organic juices, smoothies, and a rotating menu of vegetarian and vegan food. 4295 S Florida Ave, Lakeland. (863) 225-5961. PALACE PIZZA Craving pizza? Palace offers a variety of veggie combos that you can order by the slice, plus they also offer a few vegetarian salads. Pasta your thing? Try their vegetable lasagna or eggplant parmigiana. 114 S Kentucky Ave, Lakeland. (863) 688-0045. SAKURA If it’s sushi you’re thinking about, head to Sakura in Winter Haven. They have eight different vegetable sushi rolls, plus edamame, salads, and vegetable fried rice. Go between 4:30-6 pm, MondayThursday for their Happy Hour pricing. 787 3rd St SW, Winter Haven. (863) 299-3388. BAMBU CAFÉ Bambu offers made to order juices, infused waters, and fruit and veggie smoothies. Soups (including several vegan options) are house made, with organic broths and vegetables; most are dairyfree and low sodium. (Try the kale.) Save room for a smoothie for dessert – my favorite? The Reese’s Cup, which is made from banana, organic peanut EXPECT MORE... GET MORE... WE DELIVER!

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND ABOUT THE PLANT-BASED TREND When dieticians say eat more plants, they are talking about whole foods, fruits, and vegetables that come directly from the earth to your kitchen. Those faux burgers and sausages? Heavily processed, and processed foods, meatless or not, should be eaten in moderation. Plus, those engineered meats can be high in sodium and have more calories and higher saturated fat than a burger made from lean ground beef…. Just don’t assume because it’s vegan, it’s automatically healthy.

This is an eating pattern… you cycle between periods of fasting and eating… and it’s gotten a lot of press lately, too. It doesn’t specify which foods you should eat but rather when you should eat them. METHODS There are several different ways of doing intermittent fasting (IF) — all of which involve splitting the day or week into eating and fasting periods. Skip breakfast a lot? You may already be practicing IF. Here are the most popular methods: • 16/8 method: Skip breakfast and restrict your daily eating period to 8 hours, such as 1–9 p.m. This is the most popular method. • Eat-Stop-Eat: This involves fasting for 24 hours, once or twice a week. •The 5:2 diet: With this method, you consume only 500–600 calories on two non-consecutive days of the week and then eat normally the other five days. Full disclosure: Hubby tried the 16/8 method this past summer and lost more than 10 pounds! TRIED & TRUE WAYS TO LIGHTEN UP

EAT HEALTHY FATS Fat is often the first thing people cut when weight loss is on their mind, but healthy fats help you lose weight. Foods like olive oil, avocados and nuts will help you stay fuller longer and decrease cravings.

JUST WALK I’ve been singing this song since I owned my first Fitbit years ago. Walking is a great way to burn calories, and anyone can do it – you don’t need to be in great shape, and you don’t need any special equipment. STAY HYDRATED Your body needs water for every function – including weight loss. People who are not adequately hydrated generally have higher body mass indexes (BMIs) and are more likely to be obese. CUT BACK ON REFINED CARBS Refined carbs had their fiber and other nutrients removed. White flour, pasta and bread lead this list. They are digested quickly and only keep you full for a short period of time – which leads to more calories consumed. Instead, choose complex carbohydrates like oats, grains like quinoa and barley, or veggies like carrots and potatoes. UPDATE YOUR PLATE Switch out your 12-inch dinner plate for a slightly smaller 10-inch one. Research shows that this will encourage you to serve yourself a smaller portion of food. If you do this for every meal of the day, you could cut around 500 calories. Winning the weight game can be a challenge. I hope these tips and suggestions can help you Lighten Up for the New Year! Here are also a few upcoming events that can help pave your way to a healthier future... VEGGIE EVENTS AT BOK TOWER GARDENS VEGGIE FEST WEEKEND: Jan 31- Feb 2. Join Certified Vegan Lifestyle and Educator Coach Naomi Green in the Outdoor Kitchen for a weekend series of vegan cooking workshops. Naomi specializes in helping people adapt for serious health benefits through her popular cooking workshops, parties and corporate wellness program.

Many nutritionists believe that you really shouldn’t try anything drastic – like going completely plant-based or intermittent fasting when you first attempt to lose weight – you could be setting yourself up for failure. Rather, start with small, healthy changes that add up, like the following:

VEGGIE FEST: Plant-Based Pizza Pie & Antipasto Dinner: Jan 31, 6-8 P.M. Master the magic of turning nuts into vegan cheese and watch how we make mouthwatering vegan pizza in an outdoor pizza oven AND on the grill while you enjoy a bountiful plant-based antipasto meal and sip a vegan wine. Registration required. $55 members/$65 nonmembers.

DITCH SUGAR Added sugar is a major reason for weight gain and health problems like diabetes and heart disease, and any food high in sugars tend to be very low in the nutrients your body needs. Sometimes, foods promoted as “healthy” or “organic” can be very high in sugar. Read the labels!

VEGGIE FEST: Vegan Chili & Fresh Winter Sangria: Feb 1, 3-4:30 P.M. Learn how to throw down a quick, delicious vegan chili made using the Instant Pot while you watch us prepare a freshmade vegan sangria drink for a hot snack on a cool afternoon. Samples included. $35 members/$45 non-members.

CHANGE YOUR COFFEE ORDER If you typically begin the day with a 16-ounce latte with whole milk, switch to a 12-ounce cup with coconut milk instead. This cuts calories (560 in a week) and should help raise your “good” cholesterol.

VEGGIE FEST: ChickPea Smash Brunch Munch Demonstration: Feb 2, 11:30 A.M. – 1 P.M. You have never tasted anything like this: an amazing vegan sandwich mash we will show you how to love without the bread, meat or mayo. $30 members/$40 non-members. JANUARY 2020

By Elizabeth Morrisey A revolution to rise up and end violence against women will be reaching Polk County through Week of Love Feb. 8-15 in Winter Haven. 1 Billion Rising is a global mass action started on Valentine’s Day in 2012 to try and combat the problem of violence. The statistics are startling – one in three women around the world will be beaten or raped in her lifetime. That’s one billion women and girls. “This is casting a light on violence,” says Bernie Warren, an organizer of the event. “When people unite, we can start attacking it. When you are united, you have more power.” The Week of Love starts Feb. 8 with an art class at Winter Haven Library called Soul Collage from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. It’s a healing project in which the person selects random images and then puts them together. It helps people process their emotions and can provide them insight. On Feb. 9, Inside Out Yoga will host a class at 1 p.m. Proceeds from Week of Love will go to the Red Tent Initiative, a Lakeland-based program for survivors of abuse. “We are a network to help people go from being victims to survivors,” says Founder Alison FoleyRothrock. “We use the arts as a medium.” Foley-Rothrock says abuse is a societal issue. “We all have to work together. These issues affect over half of our population,” she explains. She started Red Tent in 2015 as a network of survivors and allies to help end abuse particularly in the forms of domestic violence, sexual abuse and human trafficking. Red Tent has assisted people with relocation, rental assistance, coordinating emergency shelter, transportation, food, clothing and legal services. Week of Love will also include a self 28 JANUARY 2020

defense class Feb. 10 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Winter Haven Library hosted by the Polk County Sheriff’s department. That evening, Sidestreet Studio in downtown Winter Haven will have a conversation on love event where healing can take place through poetry and spoken word. Feb. 11 is another yoga session at 7 p.m. and the next evening be sure to grab your tickets for the Vagina Monologues, performed by Theatre Winter Haven at the Ritz Theatre downtown. Eve Ensler wrote the Vagina Monologues after interviewing 200 women about sex, relationships and violence against women. Ensler is also the founder of 1 Billion Rising. On Valentine’s Day, Week of Love is holding a fundraiser at Jensen’s Corner Bar on 3rd St. SW with live music. “These events help get people’s attention and inspires those to take

action,” says Chuck Warren, with Sage-ing, a group of retired people who decided to take Week of Love on as a project. “I heard about 1 Billion Rising and was inspired by it.” 1 Billion Rising activists have been using dance as a way to inspire others. In 2012, Debbie Allen gifted her choreography for “Break the Chain” – an original dance that activists around the world have been using to express themselves. Winter Haven is also participating in “Break the Chain” as the week wraps up with a grand finale event in Central Park from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 15. Bernie Warren says awareness can be raised when people see the dance and hear the lyrics to help break the chain of violence. Anyone, children and adults, can participate in the performance Feb. 15. Practices will be held at Winter Haven Library every Saturday 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. from Jan. 11 to Feb. 8. The choreography will also be taught at Bethune Academy in Haines City Tuesdays and Thursdays Jan. 7 – Feb. 11 from 3:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. “Dance is global,” she says. “The lyrics are empowering women and speaks to all, especially survivors.” The celebration Feb. 15 will have performances by LA Dance Studio and Bethune Academy, a drum circle will be held and organizations will be present with educational materials. The finale will be everyone coming together to perform “Break the Chain”. Foley-Rothrock, with Red Tent, says trauma affects everything. “It’s not just a women’s issue, but it’s a global issue that has to be addressed. People who are victims who don’t find healing will continue to carry it around or become abusers themselves. If we put a stop to it, it has a ripple effect.” For more information on the nation wide movement: OneBillionRising.org

TID BITS TRACEY’S

By Tracey Greene

CANELO

Welcome to 2020: Be a Doer not a Sayer It’s that time of year again when everyone casts out the old and looks to the new. Reflections of the past year and excitement to the incoming. With each year comes a “do over” of sorts. We make lists of everything we “want” for the new year: lose weight, pay off debt, be healthier, exercise more, volunteer more, get organized, make more money, go on a dream vacation, etc…everyone has a list, even if it’s a mental one. We resolve to DO better. To BE better. But then it seems that we settle back into that hum drum pattern of normalcy. Lists are made but resolutions are broken – quickly. I started thinking about my own resolutions, and how to get there. But, in all actuality changes can be hard, and overwhelming. This is why, in my opinion, we fail. Say you get overzealous and make a 2020 list that is 20 lines long, well there’s only 12 months in the year so do the math… that means we are going to be VERY aggressive with LOTS of changes in our life. This sets you up for failure. It’s easy to SAY you are going to do these changes but it’s harder to DO them. Putting the plan into action and keep doing them. So, for this year, I got an idea after seeing my friend’s calendar that she created to keep herself on track for December with her very busy work and holiday schedule. What if we do the same thing for our resolutions? Make a calendar and break it down so we can see it – to keep ourselves accountable, and to keep ourselves on track. She emailed me a version but MOST importantly she printed it out and put it on her frig as a daily reminder. It’s brilliant! I live by my online calendar every day, so why not use it to help better myself. Step

One will be creating my New Year’s Resolutions’ list. Step Two will be realistically creating a 12-month calendar that I can manage to: get resolutions started, resolutions achieved, and resolutions conquered! We all know that some resolutions are ongoing, but we must start somewhere. My top 3 resolutions are: back in gym, lose weight, get organized. Back in gym; while I know that it is unrealistic of me to think that I can just jump back into going to the gym 5-6 days a week. I can schedule (on my calendar) 2 days a week and go from there. Lose weight; getting back in the gym will help this one, but also removing the junk foods from the house will help. They seem to sneak into the house more and more starting in October…Cutting back on eating out and eating from a drivethrough will also help! Getting organized; this is one of my biggest and a multi-part resolution. My friend always says that when she started getting her life organized it was a transcending moment. This is my number one FAIL! I will take this resolution in baby steps because it gets very overwhelming to me. I resolve to organize one part of my life each month. If I break it down smaller, I feel like it is an achievable goal. For January, my calendar will schedule a weekend to work on my bedroom closet. I want this organized, to get rid of ALL items that I do not use or wear and make room for everything; a place for everything and everything in its place. If I get this done in the month of January, I feel that it will be the best way to kick off MY new year in a very meaningful and positive way. My wish for all is to be a DOER not a SAYER. Actions always speak louder than words. Be the best you for 2020 and beyond… QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS Info@todayandtonight.com
