ONOMATOPOEIA on·o·mato·poe·ia: The naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (as buzz, hiss).
By Erica Smith
Blooming Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything. — George Bernard Shaw The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. —Alan Watts If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading. — Lao Tzu It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad. — C. S. Lewis My cousin Steven and I rarely see each other except at major holidays and unfortunately, the conversations are too brief. However, we share this little ritual at each encounter and the question he always asks me is this “so anything new with you?” Inevitably, my answer has been for the last decade “no, not really.” His answer is usually the same and we both laugh comfortably from our bubbles of safe predictability. Significant change in the Smith household is a rare occurrence. We pride ourselves on the grown-up expectedness of being relatively stable humans. The bills get paid, the lawn gets mowed, and household chores are completed. Like a warm and
comforting blanket, the Smith daily routine runs like clockwork. Actually, the Smith household runs well thanks to the efforts of my husband but that is a whole other column. However, this month is decidedly different as I completely upset the apple cart of predictability and accepted a career change. For twelve years, my days have started in the direction of due west. I knew exactly how to answer any question, what contact to call and generally what was needed in most situations. I knew how many minutes it would take to cross the Polk Parkway and the number of stairs on the way to my office. While my schedule was wildly erratic, the constant was, I was certainly going to have to work late. For the last few weeks, my days have started in the opposite direction as my drive now takes me east. The traffic is much lighter and the path is a meandering drive past orange groves and pasture. Being the “new girl” is rather uncomfortable experience and feels like an uncomfortably, tight new dress. I am a fish out of water but I smell orange blossoms when I get out of my car and instead of ospreys, I now am greeted by singing birds. My previous determined confidence has been replaced by nervous uncertainty and I find myself fidgeting with anxiety. But, change does not come easy. QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS info@todayandtonight.com

THE TRUTH ABOUT LARRY If you’ve ever watched Impractical Jokers on truTV then you know what it’s like to belly laugh. The wild, silly and hilarious adventures of four comedians are chronicled as they compete to embarrass each other out among the general public with a series of humorous and outrageous dares. STORY BY ANASTASIA ZIVIC If you’ve ever watched Impractical Jokers on truTV then you know what it’s like to belly laugh. The wild, silly and hilarious adventures of four comedians that make up the comedy troupe “The Tenderloins”, and lifelong friends, Sal Vulcano, Joe Gatto, James “Murr” Murray and Brian “Q” Quinn, are chronicled as they compete to embarrass each other out among the general public with a series of humorous and outrageous dares. When Sal, Joe, Murr and Q challenge each other to say or do something they have to do it. If they refuse, they lose. At the end of every episode, the biggest loser must endure a punishment of epic proportions. This season the dares and the punishments are bigger, badder, and funnier than ever before. Whether you are laughing at what they’re challenged to do, amused by them getting a kick out of each other, or chuckling at the reaction of those in their midst, you’re in on the gag and hilarity is sure to ensue. With two upcoming shows at The Lakeland Center in May, Jokers Joe Gatto and James “Murr” Murray took some time out of their busy schedules to phone in and chat with us. As you can imagine, there was a lot of laughing. We spoke a little about their fans, their inspirations and their personal and comedic lives, and they managed to spill a couple of crazy secrets about upcoming episodes for our readers. T&T MAG: When I spoke to your publicist I let her know this wasn’t going to be a hard-hitting journalism kind of interview and she seemed relieved as she let me know you weren’t hard-hitting journalism kind of guys. [Laughs] So, the bar was set pretty low for you and the bar is set very low for me. JOE: [Laughs] I mean, I’m at least tied for the third lowest on the bar. MURR: [Laughs] I thought you were going to say the bar is set low after talking to Joe! T&T MAG: You guys are selling out these theaters, you’re doing your own headlining cruises with these comedy legends - Dom Irerra, Gilbert Gottfried, Lisa Lampanelli, Michael Ian Black - did you ever imagine when you started that you’d have this kind of success?
to feed it, where, you’re on this trip with us, you’re hanging out with us, it’s kind of just like where we’re an accessible kind of funny, and we just want all people to be happy and have a good time. That was always our way, back in the day when we would do our Tenderloins shows, these small shows that we started doing in 2000, where we have 20 people in this black box theater, it would be people watching us having fun and that’s why they’d have fun. Our improv wasn’t the greatest, but we were having so much fun doing it that it was infectious and I think that’s really been the secret for us.
-------- JOE GATTO -----JOE: No, it’s been an absolutely insane, unbelievable ride. A lot of times we step outside and all just take a look in - we’ll be doing some of these crazy things we’re able to do and just take a look at each other and be like, we’re at work now, wow. And to be beside your best friends it’s absolutely the most fortunate story that anyone can hear, let alone live. You mentioned Lisa Lampanelli was on our cruise and I used to go to her shows religiously, she’s one of my comedic influences, and I’d go to the shows when she was in Jersey or Carolina, or on Broadway, and I befriended her, and now, years later, she’s on my cruise? It’s just mind-blowing, just great. MURR: We tell the story on stage that 10 years ago literally we did a live show in New York City and 2 people showed up. And now 10 years later, as a performer, to have this happen is really a dream come true. It is mind blowing and humbling, and I can’t believe what I do for a living and I can’t believe I get to do it with my best friends. And it’s all because of the fans. They keep showing up and coming out. I guess they kind of dig us torturing each other!
-------- JAMES MURRAY -----MURR: The comment we get all the time is that people say we remind them of their friends, the things they used to do with their best friends. I take that as a huge compliment. We weren’t cast, we are lifelong best friends, and I think people take to that. We remind them of the people they love in their life.
T&T MAG: I’d agree with that! Part of the success must be because you guys are “every man”, so when you guys are experiencing these situations with each other everyone is going through that with you, whether it’s laughter or... people are reacting to you react to each other.
T&T MAG: Yes, one of the best things is that you guys just put yourselves out there - put it all out there. That makes it fun for everyone, including celebrities. Joe, I saw where you were tweeting with Steve Carell - you posted you had been mistaken for him and had gotten a free lunch, and so he responds saying how much his family loves watching the show. Have you had any experiences with any of your comedy heroes that were surreal for you at this point?
JOE: Yeah, it’s definitely something - we like for that feeling to flourish, we do everything we can
JOE: Oh Steve Carell. My mind was blown. My mind was absolutely blown! Literally, he is one of

From page 11 my comedy heroes. I stood there with my mouth open. I was with my sisters and my wife at my house when the tweet came out, and I just stood there and stared at my phone for about 30 seconds. My sister asked, what happened? I couldn’t even believe it was happening, and, for a second, because it’s funny, the way we live our life, I didn’t know if someone had hacked Steve Carell’s Twitter account! What a pleasure to be able to return the favor of laughter. MURR: We’ve been very fortunate to become friends with the Zucker brothers, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker, who are the creators of Naked Gun, Airplane!, they did some of the Scary Movies, I mean, as a 39 year old man, I spent hours with my father watching the Naked Gun and Airplane! movies, and for all four of us, they were huge inspirations, a huge part of our upbringing. Last year we became friends with them and we got probably the best email of our lives when David Zucker - who did a screening of Naked Gun on the cruise! - sent a message, saying he watched the show and could only get through 20 minutes at a time because he had tears running down his face from laughing. I mean, to get that from them, I mean, he and his brother are legends to us, to get the positive feedback from them on our work is mind blowing. That’s probably the highlight for me. They are my inspirations. T&T MAG: Speaking of inspirations, while doing some research for this chat, I found you’re quite the inspiration for someone Murr. I found the best website, it is called Adorable Murr on Tumblr...
MURR: Maybe, end of war, end of poverty, free ice cream Fridays. Oh, and casual Monday. And end of disease. Who’s not going to vote for me? T&T MAG: You’re a shoo-in! You know, it’s a beautiful thing when you get to do what you love and to be yourself. JOE: Yes, people have called Impractical Jokers a prank reality show, but really it’s about us being who we are when we are together. It’s really a show about friendship. T&T MAG: Yes, and you get to find life in being able to be yourself. Deep. [Laughs] I know you are able to now take this and be a part of something bigger. Joe, I know you are involved in the NOH8 anti-bullying campaign, would you speak to that? JOE: I am a strong advocate for that. You know, growing up, I would say yes, I was definitely bullied. An odd man out and a loner a little bit, and I had those moments where I thought life wasn’t going to get any better. Now I really want to go out of my way to let people know that they aren’t alone, that’s not the case and yes it gets better. I get connected to these larger audiences and do these panels with these great groups, Anti-Bullying Coalition and the NOH8 campaign and I do my Traffic Cam thing on Periscope, which can give people affirmation that it’s going to be okay, I think that’s very important. And it’s amazing when you hear back from people that it’s been positive for them then it just feeds the fire for me continuing to do that.
T&T MAG: What a very wonderful way to have an impact. And you’re also an animal advocate, Joe, with two dogs Cannoli and Biscotti JOE: Yeah, we just rescued our second dog and couldn’t be more happy. T&T MAG: I like the names. Not surprising, I hear that you also like some donuts. JOE: It’s funny because there’s a store down the street from me in my hometown just created cannoli donuts and it was everything I love to combine two of my favorite things. T&T MAG: Speaking of favorites, what is your favorite challenge you’ve ever given to one of the guys? JOE: I really take pride in the punishments [Laughs] one of my favorites was Sal’s haunted corn maze, tied a rope to his waist. He really gets in his own head and gets scared so it was a perfect punishment for him. It took him 20 minutes to even walk in - we were losing daylight, I’m like, Sal, you got to go in! T&T MAG: Murr, you’ve been pierced, you’ve been tattooed, they seem to pick on you! What is the most outrages thing they’ve made you do? MURR: The most outrageous thing that has happened to me hasn’t aired yet, we filmed it 3 weeks ago. And I tell you, I was shocked! It trumped skydiving. It may have
even trumped them having me pose naked and interview Danica McKellar, who was Winnie on the Wonder Years television show. That was bad, this is worse. I can’t give too much away. Here’s what I’ll say. A doctor is involved and I’m wearing a patients gown. And I’m not going to say anything other than that. I couldn’t believe it, it was funny, but I couldn’t believe what I had to do. Twice. I mean, I had to get something done to me twice. T&T MAG: I mean, right now, my imagination is going to places it’s not gone before, I’ll tell you that. MURR: I’ll let you figure it out, but we are at a certain age, as men... T&T MAG: You lived to tell the tale! MURR: I lived to tell the tale and I’m healthy! T&T MAG: Well, that’s good! Oh my. We now can’t wait to see that! Is there anything you’ve looked back on in any of the episodes and wished you’d done differently? MURR: Interesting question. Hmm. I’ll tell you what, when I went skydiving, or, crydiving as the guys like to call it, it’s a tandem jump, so the instructor has the parachute on, and you are just tethered to them with like, rope. And right before we went to jump I said to the instructor, who

MURR: No you did not. T&T MAG: It says - “Dedicated to James “Murr” Murray, the Sexy One on ‘Impractical Jokers,’ and a member of the comedy troupe, The Tenderloins. Yes, I belong to Team Murr, Murr-Maid Squadron!” That’s a testament right there. There is a Murr-Maid Squadron. Did you know about this? MURR: I didn’t, but like if I did how would I say because of Joe. But I will tell you this is right, because I am adorable. And Joe is full of it, but, yes, I am incredibly adorable and you can quote me on that! T&T MAG: Something else, Murr, I know you’ve dabbled in politics with a run for congress last year. MURR: As an April Fool’s Day joke, yes [Laughs]. T&T MAG: I just thought, well, we’re in a politically charged atmosphere, and thought to ask if one of our Presidential candidates asked to you be a running mate, what kind of platform would you be running on? MURR: Um, I don’t know... free ice cream Fridays? T&T MAG: I like it.

Adele’s “21” (released five years ago) and Kacey Musgraves “Same Trailer, Different Park” (released three years ago) are two albums, that when they came out, they didn’t come off of repeat in my car. All these years have gone by and I have yet to find a full music project to fully engulf my musical passion, until now. I give you, Brandy Clark. Brandy has been around Nashville for years. She is an accomplished songwriter who has had songs cut by Sheryl Crow, Miranda Lambert, The Band Perry, Gretchen Wilson, Reba McEntire and of course, Kacey Musgraves…to just name a few. Her songwriting has won her several awards and she’s been nominated for “Best New Artist” at the Grammy’s and CMA’s. Much like Chris Stapleton was for years…she is an artist who doesn’t get a lot of radio play; however, her music is the definition of “country.” Clark has been on tour with Jennifer Nettles (Sugarland) and had some downtime for a radio tour. Luckily, WPCV was blessed to have her stop by last month for an intimate performance. I was blown away. Her voice was so effortlessly pure and crisp. Her songs are nothing short of genius. She takes simple words and phrases, turns them around to mean so much more than their definition. (it’s so hard to describe) Her album doesn’t come out until June 10th, but she gave me an advanced copy. I haven’t stopped listening to it. That says a lot from someone who listens to music for most of the day and typically rides home enjoying the silence.

BRANDY CLARK I can honestly tell you that if you are a fan of an old time country sound…a mix of Loretta Lynn & Patsy Cline…adding a contemporary feel (Kacey Musgraves)…Brandy Clark is your girl. I am a firm believer of “video killed the radio star”…and typically every single artist looks like they are right off the New York runway… it is hard to relate to any of them. Not that looks matter to me when it comes to music, but Nashville doesn’t feel the same. Brandy is the cute girl next door. She’s someone who can sit at your coffee table, share some wine and solve the world’s problems with. She is something that you don’t find anymore…REAL. She’s a REAL person, with REAL talent, with a REAL sense of humor, and has one of the best albums I have ever heard. Check it out when released in June. Thank you Brandy Clark for coming by for a visit, for coming on my show, for signing the “famous toolbox,” for being real, for giving me hope, and lastly…for recording COUNTRY MUSIC. BRIAN’S BRAIN
By Brian Bruchey BINX
Tacky Trousers At the risk of sounding like an old fuddy-duddy, and realizing that just using the term “fuddy-duddy” makes me sound like an old fuddy-duddy, I have to rant a bit about current fashion. Most of my ire originates from the fad of guys wearing their pants low, sometimes below their butt. I’m no prude, and if you have read my column over the years, you are sure of that, but this is a fad that I just can’t understand. Most of you might be thinking, “I bet you use to wear acid washed jeans, parachute pants, or had a mullet.” To that, I say “Nay, baby, nay”. I’ve never been one to partake in current trends, opting instead for just the basic boring timeless look. Even still, as I think back to trends and fads of yesteryear, I can’t really think of anything as stupid as the droopy drawers. Yes, I know that parents back in the 50s and early 60s rolled their eyes at their children with sneakers, blue jeans, and greasy hair, and said, “You kids with your stompers, dungarees, and oily coifs really make me snap my cap!” In the late 60s and 70s, parents looked at their kids dressed like hippies and probably thought…well, they probably thought their kids must be smoking something and were probably right. Flower power, peace signs, lots of browns, yellows, and greens. When it comes to being anywhere close to being as stupid as the lowpants look, this era is it. Hippies. Seriously, if I had to choose sitting in VW Minibus with four smelly, braindead, ugly hippies, or a cage with the women from The View, well, I’d actually kill myself is what I would do, because neither would be a good choice. Hippies didn’t know how to dress. The only good clothing fad to come out of the 60s/70s was the miniskirt. But at least the clothes that the hippies wore was still functional, even if it looked hideous, and probably smelled even worse. I already mentioned the clothing fads of the 80s. Somewhat laughable? Sure. But not so pathetic that you look at it and say, “What in the actual hell is that all about?” Hammerpants in the 90s? Wild,
Binx is a black and white male Domestic Shorthair mix. He is approximately 11 months old. He has been neutered. Owner cant afford to take care of anymore. He is friendly, lap cat, laid back, shy, sweet and give kisses per owner once he warms up to you.
BLESSING
Blessing is a black and white female Labrador Retriever mix. She is approximately 6 years old. She knows how to sit and is very eager to please. She is super sweet and gets along well with people of all ages.
BRADY
yes. But still no where near the ridiculousness of the Mr Gangbanger’s saggy butt. Remember when rap music first started getting big in the late 80s and early 90s? The rappers were smooth, fun, and cool. These days, a rapper wears gold on their neck, in their teeth, and on their fingers, and dress in dark colors. It’s like comparing 80s Superman to the current Superman. Almost. So now we have this look where a lot of boys, and amazingly some men, wear their pants like they pooped in them. Black kids, white kids, Hispanic kids. It’s crazy. Some people hate sagging pants look so much, that some communities have made it illegal. That’s going too far… I don’t like the idea of making laws that prohibit the way a person dresses. Instead, I think communities need to come together, take a stand, set a good example for the youth, and tell these kids that they really look like ridiculous dorks. Pants are simple pieces of clothing. Belts are very easy to use as well. Failure to use them correctly enables me to literally see your dumb ass. RED DOOR WINE MARKET Fine Wine • Beer • Amazing Food
By Loren Spangler Photos By Chris Douglas
Richard DeAngelis, proprietor of the Red Door Wine Market (a charming structure built in 1927), was born and raised in New Hampshire. After moving to Florida and attending the University of Miami, he worked at the Chart House… making a change to Melbourne, Florida where he acted as Owner/Operator of Kipling’s Restaurant from 1987 to 1997. Richard relocated to Upstate New York and became a restaurant consultant…then moved to West Hartford where he worked as a Negociant (French for wine merchant). There he met his wife Lori, convinced her to marry him, and ended up back to Florida where sons Henry and Ethan were born. “We opened for business at our original location in December 2009, and finally here (across the street from the Lakeland Library) on January 9, 2014,” says Richard. “Amazingly, our restaurant in Melbourne was also grey with a red door, and was on Palmetto Street.” Executive Chef Jason Boniface (also from New 20 APRIL 2016

Hampshire) graduated from culinary school and interned at Mountain Lake Country Club in Lake Wales. Returning to New England for additional training, he became an aspiring chef under the tutelage of famed Boston chefs Jamie Bissonette and Ken Oringer. While staying with friends in the Lakeland area, Jason fatefully visited the Red Door and the rest is history (as they say). Ultimately becoming a member of the hip and talented team, Jason works hard to ensure dining at the Red Door Wine Market is unique and savory every time, and that all people are welcome as customers. “When I saw Jason’s resume, I thought it was so pedigree that it must have been made up,” says Richard. “I was impressed,” he adds. Since he has been working as chef at the Red Door, the Achievement Academy has awarded Jason the People’s Choice “Top Chef of Polk County” for 2015. “Our wines are special and not easily obtained,” says Richard. “We are doing wine tasting (last Monday of the month) to focus on wines from different parts of the world.” This is a roundtable appreciation that includes from twenty to twenty-four people. As a proprietor who worked fifteen years at a winery in California, Richard is highly qualified to conduct such a savory event.

While at the restaurant, ask about Hoodies. MY PACK From page 18
months, it was clear that it was permanent. Of course, me being the animal lover, I started helping out with this young dog and, from across a chain link fence, fell head over heels in love with her – and she with me. Over the next year, which turned to two years, I mentioned many times that I would take her. I felt to my core she was supposed to be mine. Then Sadie made her debut, so I thought that maybe it wouldn’t happen. December of 2015, my neighbor told me she was moving soon and I thought for sure that Bambi would be given to me to raise and love. A few weeks later, January 5th my neighbor moved a few miles away and took Bambi with her. I actually got depressed for a full week not being able to see her everyday. Then on January 28th, a knock on the door, a short conversation with the grandson of my neighbor, and Bambi was handed over to me: My Big Girl, My Horse, My Princess. Now my pack is complete. If you would have told me a few years ago that I would have three dogs living in my house along with my cat – I’d say no way, but would secretly be giddy at the idea. My animals make me happy. I love them and they love me. They are far from perfect but we humans aren’t perfect – each having good and bad days. My house consists of a watchdog, a guard-dog and a rat terrier: 34 pounds, 61 pounds and 14 pounds. My routines have changed a bit, but I make it work. Buster is happy that the “girls” have each other so he, as the senior 10-year-old, is relieved of full “playtime” duty. The 3-year-old girls love each and play together all day and night, not realizing their size or weight difference, until a nap is required from exhaustion. I will say that the new ruler of this household is the 14-pound antagonistic, clever, sneaky bundle of cuteness…the terror-ier herself, Sadie. She keeps our pack on its toes. I wish that everyone could understand and feel the joy that animals of all shapes, sizes and species bring to our lives. BRAINEXCERCISE Sudoku Puzzle STRANGE BUT TRUE BY SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was early 20th-century English schoolmaster and lexicographer Henry Watson Fowler who made the following sage observation: “Display of superior knowledge is as great a vulgarity as display of superior wealth -- greater, indeed, inasmuch as knowledge should tend more definitely than wealth towards discretion and good manners.” • In 2007, a British woman named Susie Hewer completed a marathon in less than six hours -- while knitting a scarf. • Someday, Saturn might not be the only planet in our solar system that has rings. Those who study such things say that Mars’ gravitational pull on its largest moon, Phobos, could cause a catastrophic breakup, with the moon’s debris forming a ring around the planet -- in 20 million to 40 million years. • It’s been reported that before Japan came into contact with the West, people in that country did not kiss. • When the mantis shrimp attacks its prey, the swing of its claw is so powerful that even if it misses, the resulting shock wave can be enough to stun or kill its prey. • Coral snakes found in North America are relatively small, quite reclusive ... and deadly. You’re unlikely to be bitten by one (due in part to the species’ extreme avoidance of confrontation, coral snakes account for less than 1 percent of all snakebites in the U.S.), but if you are, the snake’s neurotoxic venom can cause severe pain and death. However, snake-bite experts say that in some cases, a bite will result in no symptoms at all for 12 hours -- at which point the victim dies from sudden respiratory failure.

MUSIC BAND PROFILE
BACKSTAGE PASS
BY ANASTASIA J. ZIVIC
If you’re looking for a powerful dose of feel-good country from a talented circle of friends that are family, add in a measure of humble and a heck of a lot of heart, then you’ll find that in Polk county’s own The Nathan Baldwin Band. The year-old formation of this 7-piece act is so tightknit that they’ve coined the term “Bamily” to describe their unit. Consisting of namesake Nathan Baldwin (guitar/vocals), along with his sister Nicky Godwin (vocals), mother Sissy Baldwin (bass/ vocals), and uncle Gary Yearry (drums), the “Bamily” also includes Joey Foley (guitar/vocals), Adam Wilson (mandolin) and Bobby Long (guitar/harmonica). T&T MAG: Tell me how you started playing music. NATHAN BALDWIN: I started playing music because my mom had always played with her band - she had been on stage since she was 13 or 14 years old, with her sisters, and then she taught my sister and I how to sing. I was probably 9 or 10 years old. Then I learned one song and that was it for me. There was no turning back.
30 APRIL 2016
T&T MAG: What song did you learn? NB: It was Boondocks by Little Big Town. I was about 14 then, and we realized that we may have something good, me and my sister, that we could do it, it felt right. We started out playing gospel music, then ventured out playing country, now we still do a little bit of both. T&T MAG: I heard a great story about you and your sister Nicky winning Bluegrass Duo of the Year? NB: Yes, in 2004. We were in Alabama with our mother who was performing at a gospel show when a woman from North American Country Music Associations, International (NACMAI) approached her to play in the competition. When she and the lady got to talking mom mentioned she had kids that are performers too and we auditioned for her right there on the street. After that she invited us to play too at the competition in Pigeon Forge, TN. We ended up winning Bluegrass Duo of the Year. My mom won 3 or 4 awards too, I believe she won Country/Gospel Song of the Year.

T&T MAG: A great example of how it pays to always be prepared! You never know when someone will ask you to sing in the street and what it will lead to. After that experience did it push you to move forward? NB: We definitely knew at that point that music was our passion. After a few years went by, with us having played in churches and places like that, we formed our first band and wanted to start playing out. In 2006 it was my sister and I and 3 of our cousins and we were called New Again, and that lasted about a year and a half. We took that band and were going to churches and charity events, stepping out anywhere we could. The bar scene didn’t come up until after that, and it was my sister and I, we played as Nathanael Nicole. T&T MAG: At some point playing as Nathanael Nicole you decided to change the name to The Nathan Baldwin Band. NB: Yes, the name didn’t really match what we were trying to do, so we changed the name and kept playing. What we’ve got going on right now has been together for a little over a year now. T&T MAG: How would you say this version of the band has changed you or helped you grow? NB: In all the past bands we weren’t running parallel. Now, we all get it. We play for each other, off each other, with each other. We’ve got a lot of love. There is no drama, everyone is for each other, and that really helps when you’re up there on stage, having a good time, and it’s the best it’s ever been now because of that. T&T MAG: Can you tell us a little bit about the band’s lineup? NB: Bobby Long, our guitar and harmonica player, has played music ever since he was a little boy. I’d say something about his age but I know I’d get in trouble! [Laughs] He’s more of our rocker, he likes that rock ‘n roll. He’s played in several different bands and knows everything there is to know about sound. Bobby’s really a great technical guy and is also a great guitar player. A good guy. He’ll give anyone the shirt off of his back. Adam is my age, mid-twenties, he plays the mandolin. He knows everything there is to know about bluegrass, he comes up with some of the craziest phrases out there. He’s been playing for years, we’re really glad to have him, very talented. And he’s a joker, he’s a fun one. He can play anything with strings but he really shines on that mandolin. Gary, our drummer, is my uncle, and the only
drummer I’ve ever had. The way he compliments us, he really fills in the way we need. Some drummers are really all over the place and he just hits it right in where it needs to be every time. We’re very blessed to have him. And he’s a joker too. He’s a great guy, never negative, and so good at what he does. Then there’s my mom [Laughs], she’s my mom! She keeps us straight and makes sure we walk that line! She plays the bass like nobody else I’ve ever met. She steals the show, really. She gets up there and starts to sing and that’s where we get it, we get it from her. How blessed are we? She is amazing. When she gets up singing no one wants to go next. I let everyone know on stage jokingly that I’m jealous, because she’s got that energy and everyone just loves her. I met Joey a year and a half or more ago, he was playing for another band. He’s also a phenomenal clogger, the fastest feet in Florida, and that’s how we originally knew of him. He ended up giving my sister’s kids some lessons. He’s the king of the stank eye! He will give you some stank eye on stage! I wish you could see it. If there’s anything wrong you’re going to know about it from that eye. But really, he keeps us booked, handles the business and knows everyone in Polk County. When it comes to playing, he takes care of that old school country stuff, and it’s great because it gives us that flavor along with the newer country stuff that we do, it’s great, he’s great. My sister, Nicky, she’s always been my partner in crime. There’s no way I’d want to try and tackle a musical career without my sister. She has this ear - she will call you out in a second if anything is off. What she loves is to sing, and she can put harmony on anything - and you’d better not tell her otherwise! [Laughs]. I’ve been on stage singing with people throughout my life, but never anyone like Nicky. She knows just what to do and we know how to read each other. It’s so cool to have that kind of relationship, it keeps us close. T&T MAG: Sounds like you have a very solid lineup and that is half the battle. So where do you see the band going? NB: In all reality we want to be on the big stage, and producing albums. But I want to go where we’re meant to go, to be on the path we’re supposed to be on, if you know what I mean. And it seems that way, that we are on a good path. Every week we get better and every time we play we get better, we’re getting the music out there, getting more fans and more calls for us to play. I mean, but we want to end up at The Opry! But really, if all we did right now was just play from place to place we’d be happy with that. We want to help people, and we spend a lot of our time doing benefits, and that works for us

because it makes us happy. T&T MAG: What are some of the charity events you have been involved with? NB: We recently did benefit for the C.A.R.S organization. We have worked with them for past 2 years raising money for families facing terminal illnesses. We are also work with the American Cancer Society, The Darn Brand in support of Future Farmers Of America, we will be returning to Rockin’ On The River to support Autism Awareness as well as the Skylar’s Smile cancer benefit in October, we will be opening for Daryle Singletary. T&T MAG: You guys have got a lot of heart, and that’s really nice to see. NB: Someone I’d really like to mention, she’s not on stage with us, but she’s definitely a part of our family, is Dawn Neale. She runs our social media, has helped design our shirts, that’s her logo on there, and she’s one of the kindest-hearted people I’ve ever known. She also has helped us to give back to FFA by supporting via a portion of each t-shirt purchase. She is wonderful and we want to give her a shout out. T&T MAG: She’s part of the “Bamily”. NB: Yes, most definitely. T&T MAG: There is nothing like having friends that help us in the right direction. Especially in this business. So, in closing, when people come to a show what should they expect to experience? NB: First off it’s going to be a good clean show. They’re either going to laugh at us and our corny jokes or with us! They’re going to see talent. Everyone is a team and we put on a good show and it’s good clean fun. If people want to have a good night they should come see The Nathan Baldwin Band. They may laugh, they may cry, but any way they’re going to have a good time. As the fountain flows upward behind that work, it is a fitting placement. Adam focuses across the park to another work and shares, “I’m nerdy and love comic book heroes. No one may get what I was thinking of so I’ll just tell you. The co-creators of Superman inspired it. They were two Jewish kids who created a character who came to earth on a rocket ship from heaven as a savior to the earth. That is why I shaped it like a rocket with a cross on it. Superman is also known as the atomic age superhero or
ADAM WALLS
By Mary Joye
Creator of Atomic Sculptures, Central Park Winter Haven What a pleasure it was to meet Adam Walls and his wife Christina while he was installing the last of his new sculptures chosen by Polk Museum of Art to grace Central Park in Winter Haven. It doesn’t take an Einstein to see that they have structured atomic elements. He took a break from the heavy work and we talked on the tailgate of his truck. Adam begins, “I’m a sculptor, born in South Carolina and now teaching at University of North Carolina Pembroke. We saw a call to artists in Sculpture Magazine and entered it years ago and had works here before. This year they drew from a pool of artists who had previously exhibited and I was fortunate to have four chosen.” Main Street Winter Haven and other sponsors support this annual event. Adam pointed toward a more freeform work and described, “Blue Core is part of a series that stems from the idea that life comes from within the core, like a fruit or a seed. I’ve wanted to have a child for a long time. Now we are in the process of adoption. A lot of what I do I’m responding to childhood wishes: Life springing forth!” 34 APRIL 2016
the man of steel, which is why there is a big steel atom in the center.” A large work titled “Cosmos” was explained, “It is about atoms and solar systems intermingling and a comet or two flying around so you don’t really know if you’re looking at a solar system or something minute like and an atom. Things on a grand scale and a small scale are often very similar.” “Structure” is a 12’x10’x6.6’ foot design, also with a central atom and curved cathedral –like window around it. Adam educates, “In the South we see the dilapidating buildings, but you can see the support structures. I wanted the old window to surround the modern atom. It’s like the change I see here. Every year Winter Haven is busier and prettier.” Winter Haven has always embraced modern design juxtaposed with older elements. Adam’s work is a good fit for Winter Haven 2.0. I asked Adam to teach the purpose of public sculptures and he offered, “When we travel with our work, at almost every gas station, someone asks what is that? I try to explain and they usually look at me like I’m crazy. Most people need a literal definition. My work is WWW.TODAYANDTONIGHT.COM • FIND US ON FACEBOOK
not like that; it’s conceptual. I call it non-representational though every piece here looks like something to me. Not everyone will get that, which is why it is abstract.” Christina, also an artist supported, “I enjoy so much being here and other places doing this with Adam. It’s quiet and if I lived here I would enjoy it that they rotate sculptures.” When asked the most important lessons he teaches as a professor he smiled and stated, “Safety! It’s important with large work. But, I also teach them self-expression. Some like to stir things up to get a response. I personally want people to enjoy the work and move on with a positive response.” When asked of negative comments they mostly were concerned with cost. Adam states, “Art enhances revenue in cities and small towns. Just by putting bright sculptures at areas leading into town, it slows people down. It gives them a reason to stop. If they stop there’s a greater chance they’ll buy a cup of coffee. If they sit down for a cup of coffee, they’re likely to think of it as town where they like to stop. Eventually they may decide to live there. Sculptures give a sense of ownership to a community. They will litter less and support local business more. ” Adam concludes with his positive philosophy, “I’m finding that when people say there is not much market for this, it’s the opposite. Whatever you’re into, even making sculptures out of bubble gum and plaster, which I’ve seen people do, if you’re committed to it, embrace it, wake up to it and if you want to do it, do it! You may have talent you don’t know you have. You will find opportunities to display it. I get to do things the world doesn’t necessarily know that it needs, but it does.” Christina adds, “Art is important. Like these works, it can start a conversation about quantum physics or how the pump on that water fountain works. It brings people together.” It brought us together and get together with your friends and take a walk in the park and enjoy a cup of coffee with Adam Walls sculptures. Don’t Let Your Dash Cause a Crash My other half recently bought a new vehicle. I love it, love it, love it. More importantly, he loves it and the dogs love it. It’s just wonderful…except for one feature. The word feature is used because the dashboard screen (that’s the feature) is as big as a feature presentation epic movie screen! There are too many features featured on this feature. If that sentence is confusing, just get in any new vehicle and try to use the GPS and/or the radio and see if that will add to your confusion. True confession is that though I am not a back seat driver, I am a sit-in-the front-seat-chest-clutching-invisible-brake-pedal-pushing passenger. Yes, I can drive you crazy driving, if you’re a crazy driver. He is not a crazy driver, but he’s a unique one. As a former pilot, he is accustomed to going 700 mph and having massive screens of information being presented to him 35,000 feet flying over the Amazon. I respect his amazing ability to navigate and control a vehicle of any size, with or without wings. In cockpits, or flight decks, as they are now politically correctly called, there are voices that talk if needed. That’s a nice safety feature. But in this new car, the woman’s voice sounds like a Stepford Wife trying to purposely mislead us down a dismal trail. The amount of time it takes to load an address is horrible. I don’t know where the person resides that loaded the language on this car computer, but if I speak an address such as 17th Street North, Winter Haven, Florida, the menacingly soft-spoken robotic voice will clarify by asking, “That’s Seven
Seas Lane, Winter Harbor, Oregon, is that correct?” No, it is not correct! Forget trying again, she is adamant about it. Unlike any other woman I’ve known, she will not change her mind. The worst part of this feature is that if you’re a person that gets easily distracted, it can look like a video game. It’s very deceptive. It looks like the road but it’s not. The road is where it always was…out of the windshield and not on the dashboard. Modern conveniences are not so convenient. I have wondered lately how many hours Tom could log if he were to add up the time he has spent learning everything the dashboard screen does. Since we both love laughter, he agreed, “This car will probably be 10 years old before I can figure out all the things that this feature can do.” My favorite button is the one that turns it off. Now that’s a feature. Enjoy the real ride! QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS info@todayandtonight.com

JOKERS
From page 12 was a very nice guy and very experienced, but I asked him what happens if I disconnect from you? All’s I am is strapped to your body and hoping that the strap holds, and that your parachute goes up, right? I said, if we get disconnected from each other, do you do what they do say, like, in the movie Point Break where you like, dive toward me in midair? Do you wrap me in your arms and then pull the ripcord? He says, no, that’s all Hollywood b.s., the number one rule of skydiving is: save yourself first. I said, what?! You’re sending me up 14,000 feet and I’m not wearing a parachute and if we get disconnected that’s it? That’s the rule? You tell your customers that? Right before you’re about to jump? That’s bad customer service! So, if I could do anything over, I would have worn a parachute. T&T MAG: Fair enough! [Laughs] MURR: And, if I could change a second thing, I’d try to be not quite as adorable as I am. T&T MAG: Of course, because then you have all these random websites dedicated to you, yeah. So, Murr, I have to mention, I’m a big music person, and I was thumbing through your Twitter, and I happened to catch a great version of you singing Adele’s “Hello” while driving in your car. And then I was on Instagram and saw some beautiful shots of you with Yanni, and so, I’d like to know, any collaborations for you here in the future? Inquiring minds want to know. Is there a chance for some kind of musical career for James “Murr” Murray? MURR: Well, you know, it’s all rumors and speculation right now, but who knows, you may see a trio album, Yanni, Adele and Murr. Folks, you’ve heard it here first. T&T MAG: I’d like to recommend “Adorable” as the album title. MURR: Yes! And we’ll be singing all Gershwin songs. T&T MAG: I’m first in line to buy this. Joe, tell me privately, do you have any secrets about Murr that you’d like to share with our readers? We won’t tell! JOE: I can tell you a secret that we’re about to film, we have a punishment coming up for Murr where we shave his face clean. And we’re taking it all off, his beard, what little hair is there - his eyebrows, and we’re going to send him off into the public.
36 APRIL 2016
T&T MAG: The eyebrows? There is nothing creepier than that! JOE: And especially because it’s Murray, he’s got such an odd face, it’s like weird Benjamin Button thing, like his face is really young, very odd. So yeah, we’re going to make him hit on women or something, maybe do some interviews. It’s going to be a lot of fun! T&T MAG: So, this is no lie, sometimes I hear my husband around the house going, “LARRY”, and, I know he can’t be the only one. I had some people also say hey, you have to talk to the guys about Larry. Literally the most discussed topic when I’ve mentioned you. I know that Impractical Jokers has all of these spin-offs all over the world - you guys and other versions in many countries. Do you think if enough people, say, there’s a Greek dude fishing and a Lebanese woman and a Swedish teenager and an Egyptian doctor, if everyone at the same time is walking around like my husband, going LARRRRY - do you think on some other plain, in another dimension, Larry is just sitting there like, what?! I’m busy!!!? JOE: [Laughs] You know what, it’s funny, because someone once said to me, do you think Larry just may be deaf? T&T MAG: Oh man! He could be. Larry. It’s the truth about Larry. It now makes so much sense. We’d really like to thank you both for taking time to speak with us, we’ll see you in town in May and will be watching the show. And of course we wish you continued success! You bring a lot of laughs and this has been a lot of fun! JOE: Thank you for the support and for the talk and taking the time to write about our show! We’re looking forward to it! MURR: And thanks to the fans for letting us live our dreams. Let’s all go have a beer together sometime. All the fans!
