TID BITS TRACEY’S
By Tracey Greene
Holding Back Half of a Century This month marks 49 years I have lived on this Earth. April 22, 1970 to be exact – an Earth Day Child, a Wednesday Child, a Taurus that came into the world at 4:38 pm. That alone should tell you a lot about my personality. I’ve never really had a problem with growing older or aging; age is just a number as they say. But the reality is, when you hit a certain age in your life, you do start pondering life, death, its meaning. It’s only natural as your life is technically half over, if you live to be 100 years. With advancements, we are living longer, living better and looking younger. Everyone can improve themselves to have a better future; how we eat, how we exercise, how we take care of our mind, body and soul are important to how we age. I don’t feel “old” or that I’m severely aging, accept the slight lines in my forehead, the reading glasses I must use more often and the back pains here and there…it’s definitely true that the body starts giving out before the mind. Over the next 365 days, I will be 49 and holding. Holding to what I’m not sure: maybe to life, to happiness, to peace, to security, to new adventures, to feeling young forever, to aging gracefully. Yes, to all! I look forward to seeing how my life plays out for the second half of a century. As the song “100 Years” says:
When you only got hundred years to live, Half time goes by, Suddenly you’re wise, Another blink of an eye, Sixty seven is gone, The sun is getting high, We’re moving on, I’m ninety nine for a moment, Dying for just another moment, And I’m just dreaming… Happy Birthday to Me! “There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.” ― Sophia Loren “It’s paradoxical that the idea of living a long life appeals to everyone, but the idea of getting old doesn’t appeal to anyone.” ― Andy Rooney “Wisdom is the reward for surviving our own stupidity.” ― Brian Rathbone “At 50, everyone has the face he deserves.” ― George Orwell “You don’t stop laughing when you grow old, you grow old when you stop laughing.” ― George Bernard Shaw

STONE CABIN Coffee & Cheesecake Company
By Amy Sumerlin Photos by Chris Douglas It was time for a family pow wow – you know the kind: what’s going on; who is going to do what – so I asked hubby and our daughter, Paige, to meet me recently at Winter Haven’s newest bakery/ coffee shop, Stone Cabin Coffee and Cheesecake. Because nobody – at least in my family – ever turns down cheesecake. Opened in September of last year, I first heard about the place on Facebook – not from ads, but from my friends’ posts, check-ins, and statements of undying love for their yummies. A BIT OF MYSTERY
General Manager Amber Garrettson.
The owners of Stone Cabin, located in the Miller’s Landing Plaza on Cypress Gardens Boulevard, prefer to remain anonymous, which I found interesting. Local Manager Amber Garrettson did tell me a little about them, though. “Stone Cabin Coffee and Cheesecake started with a trip the owner took to Atlanta at the age of 16,” she explained. “While there with friends, they visited a similar shop and the dream was born.”

She further explained that the owners now split their time between Tennessee and Florida and have shops in both states. And the owners obviously love the feel of that Tennessee home – near the mountains of Gatlinburg – because when you walk in, that’s the feel you get, true to its name… Red sleigh out front, stone fireplace (okay, okay, so it’s not a real one) inside… it definitely gave me a cabin vibe. EXPANSION
I found out that Stone Cabin has two shops in Florida; one in Winter Haven and a Stone Cabin Express in Port Charlotte, but they plan to open four more in Polk County over the next six months. Look for new locations in Lakeland, Haines City, and Davenport, Garrettson continued. They won’t stop there, either: The mystery owners also plan to bring that cabin vibe to Hillsborough and Orange County.
was developed specifically to complement their cheesecakes. Of course, I checked that out. 21 FLAVORS
We immediately noticed that the case was filled with multiple shelves of different cheesecakes, plus other fresh-baked items including bagels, cupcakes, and Danishes…. All made fresh in house daily. The cupcakes ($2.99), by the way, are huge. If that’s your thing, bring a friend, because there’s definitely enough to share. We decided to try the “cheesecake tour” with three different slices of cheesecake for $9.99. Each week the tour will be different, but the day we tried it the three slices were Key Lime, Cookies and Cream, and Butterfinger. Not a crumb was left, but you probably already guessed that. My favorite was
Butterfinger but next time I want to try the Peanut Butter Cup. Prices of the sweets range from $1.99 to $7.99, and gluten free options are available upon request. If you go at lunchtime, they also offer a selection of croissants, such as tuna salad or ham and cheese, all of which were $6.99. BONUS ALERT! Try them in April and mention my article, and they’ll give you 10% off. Can’t make it to their storefront? Call them… they deliver, within a 10-mile radius. Which makes them very, very dangerous to my waistline. FMI: Stone Cabin Coffee & Cheesecake Company, 7000 Cypress Gardens Boulevard; www.stonecabin.com; (863) 875-7542. FB@ StoneCabinCoWinterHaven
THE COFFEE
Expect all the varieties of coffee you come to expect – Espresso, Americano, Cappuccino, and Macchiato, all available either hot or cold – but be prepared to be pleased by the flavor. Stone Cabin, you see, offers a unique blend of coffee with a smooth combination of flavors. I ordered the Iced Latte and asked what their sugar free flavors were (I know, I know. I was about to eat cheesecake, but I digress) and was again pleasantly surprised when the teenage barista listed more than one… usually you get one. Vanilla. And they had a chocolate! Hubby chose a plain black coffee ($2.39 for the 16 oz and yes, he was more interested in the cheesecake to come) and Paige also had an Iced Latte with caramel ($3.89 for the 16 oz). If coffee isn’t your thing, they also have a selection of teas, lemonade and even a Stone Cabin Arnold Palmer. But getting back to the coffee – Garrettson also explained that their unique coffee blend 8 APRIL 2019

Big Oil Are Ayn Rand Villains For the record, when I say that Big Oil are Ayn Rand villains, I mean they act like villains from a novel written by Ayn Rand, not that they’re literal villains who read her novels. (Though I’m sure some Big Oil CEOs do!) For those who’ve never read Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged”, here’s the plot in a nutshell: Dagny Taggart is a railroad magnate. She wants to build the fastest train. Henry Rearden is a steel magnate. He wants to build the strongest steel. The two team up to build the fastest train with the strongest steel. Their competitors doubt they can do it. They prove them wrong by doing it. Their competitors, in retaliation, lobby the government to pass regulations hurting their companies. The two magnates later join other business leaders, influenced by John Galt, in retreating from society to continue their entrepreneurship free from government regulation. They all lived happily ever after. The end. As exemplified in “Atlas Shrugged”, Rand believed the world was divided between “makers” and “takers.” To her, “makers” are exceptional individuals, most often entrepreneurs, who shape the world with their ideas, but whose efforts are envied and opposed by mediocre people, or “takers”, most often through government regulation. “Every government interference in the economy consists of giving an unearned benefit, extorted by force, to some men at the expense of others,” she wrote. “By what criterion of justice is a consensus-government to be guided? By the size of the victim’s gang.” Obviously, Republicans are big fans of hers. They, like Rand, claim to support the “free market” and oppose any government regulation that would stymie “makers” such as the heroes in “Atlas Shrugged.” In reality, their policies often stifle the free market and support the “takers” more akin to her novel’s villains.
It’s no secret the GOP are bought and paid for by Big Oil. In 2018, they received more than 87% of the fossil fuel industry’s political donations, and since 1990, have received more than two-thirds of its overall political contributions, according to Open Secrets. So it’s also no surprise that the GOP, being deep in the pockets of Big Oil, have passed government policies tilting the “free market” in its favor. Fossil fuel companies receive nearly $14 billion per year in federal subsidies and nearly $5 billion from state subsidies, The Guardian reports. Republicans have also approved regulations—quite contrarily to Rand’s beliefs!—on Big Oil’s competitors, specifically electric cars and renewable energy. Many GOP lawmakers have considered state legislation penalizing homeowners who installed solar panels as “freeriders”, The Guardian reports. Many have banned the direct sale of electric cars in several states, while lawmakers in Wyoming have gone so far as to consider bills virtually banning the use of renewable energy in the state, EcoWatch reports. The irony here is that the GOP claims to support “job creation”, yet their policies hurt the very industries that create the most jobs. In 2016, renewable energy created jobs at a rate 12 times faster than the rest of the economy, with solar employing more than 260,000 jobs and wind employing 100,000, CleanTechnica reports. As solar panels and electric cars become more efficient, they become more affordable. In fact, according to The Guardian, their falling costs could halt the worldwide growth of oil as soon as 2020. Big Oil knows and fears this, which is why it lobbies the GOP to help delay the inevitable. The GOP have aligned themselves with the evil “takers” over the exceptional “makers.” That makes them Ayn Rand villains, not followers. QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS Info@todayandtonight.com

or the past seven years, Travis Williams and his band, Almost There, have been performing covers of songs from the biggest names from The Beatles to Led Zeppelin. The camaraderie they shared performing together has finally paid off now that they have won The Battle of the Bands at the Florida Strawberry Festival. Travis (front man) and his three band mates— Tim Willis (bass and guitar), Chris Willis, (lead guitarist, bassist, and back-up vocals), and Alec Winston (drummer)—appreciate the art of performing music, and it has been this appreciation that has driven them to success. The band recently sat down to answer some questions about themselves, and this is what they had to say:
When did you all start playing music? Travis: At the age of 13. One of my friends got a guitar and he showed me a song he learned on it. Before that, I was into sports a lot; and for whatever reason, that night, my friend started playing the song and it captivated me. I wanted to learn. From that night and that moment on, it continued and evolved into something bigger, and I cannot let it go.

POLK COUNTY ROCK BAND NOW ON THEIR WAY
Tim: I also started when I was 13. I learned from my dad. My dad was a guitarist and a singer. He put the passion of music into my life. Chris: It started when I was 11. My dad helped me out. I was blessed to have a musical background where my mom and dad played. It was more my dad’s passion. Somewhere along the way, I picked it up. He didn’t think I was his son because I hated music up until a certain age. He used to play music blaringly loud, and I didn’t like it. At 11 years old, I
started getting into music, and that is where it went.
Alec: I started around 13. It was the only time I went to church. I saw this very good gospel drummer. He was going nuts. He had a weird hairdo, and it was flying back and forth. So I found myself a really good drum teacher. He was one of the best teachers I ever seen. What inspires you all as musicians? Travis: Definitely some classic rock: Led Zeppelin. Tom Petty. Bob Seger. Matchbox 20. Goo

Goo Dolls. Foo Fighters. Tim: My inspirations started with The Beatles. I really followed them all through their career. And then Queen, when they came along, was another big influence. Chris: It started with Van Halen. Also influenced by bands that were underground, bands that were not mainstream. Alec: The first band I remember getting into was Rising Tides. That was the very first album I remember liking every single song. Then I started to play more, and I gravitated towards albums that were more technical and instrumental. What have been some of your favorite gigs? Travis: Hard Rock would definitely be one for me. The first time we played there, it was an experience being able to play there. Also the Strawberry Festival because it was a great feat and success for us. Tim: I have played from here all the way to Greenland. Probably one of my favorite gigs was the Strawberry Festival. Chris: Some of my favorites include Jimmy B’s Beach Bar in St. Petersburg. Strawberry Festival is also great. I felt like a rock star looking out onto that crowd. It was a total shell shock. I wasn’t expecting that. Alec: Sebring Races. That is the most fun I ever had while playing drums. Also the Strawberry Festival. What have you enjoyed most about your performances with the band? Travis: Inspiring other people. Just the creation of music, doing what we love, and people gravitating towards that can change a lot of lives. Tim: Every facet of it. I have a passion for music that I simply cannot get away from it. Chris: There are nights where you feel like you are fighting the instruments. Then there are other nights where it feels like there is nothing that can go wrong. It is those nights that really take it home for me. Everyone is gelling. It doesn’t happen all the time. Sometimes, you’re just fighting and you still sound good. When those nights happen, they inspire me the most and I have the most fun. Alec: I like the friendship and collaboration aspect. These guys, I met
them two years ago, and they become better friends in life than some other friends I had for 12 years. Alec: Seeing people react to how you play. Seeing a no-nonsense crowd. What does it feel winning battle of the bands? To what would you owe your success? Travis: It feels like floating on a cloud. You have highs and lows in this business, and this was definitely a high. We owe it to our fans, we owe it to them for what we do. Without them, we would not be here if it weren’t for the support system of people listening to our music. Tim: It was definitely a high. It was quite an experience. What I contributed, a big part of it is not only our singing and playing, but also the choices of songs we played that day. We have a lot of things to choose from, but those are what we chose. Chris: We certainly owe it to the fans and my family growing up. It was a substantial high, there was a lot of lows in this project, when you finally get to those highs, and it makes all that work that you put in worth it. Alec: You have a lot of failures. Before I met these guys, I had a lot of failures playing with people. Sometimes you feel you’re not cut out for it. But then you put the hard work on your own with the band, and you earn it. Why was a particular piece of art created and what message does it inspire by those who view it? The role of public art is to stimulate discussion, convey inspiration and reflect cultural significance. When art fails to accomplish those goals, it is time to move on to a new piece. All art is ephemeral, as it only reflects the artist’s vision for that brief moment in time. If art truly tells our human story, what do we want that story to be? However, at the very heart of the matter is our future purpose and motivation. Great art accomplishes both of those tasks while reflecting the story of our human existence. To move forward, we need more empathy, listening and learning. Inertia is not progressing, only collecting more dust.
