The Test of a Generation The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education. — Martin Luther King, Jr. The philosophy of the school room in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next. —Abraham Lincoln Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. —Nelson Mandela As an adjunct instructor, you receive a student evaluation after each semester of instruction. For the most part, the comments are very positive and constructive; however, this recent survey provided a very strange remark “instructor should have more tests.” This observation actually caused me to pull my fingers back from the keyboard in shock. When did students begin requesting more tests? According to news reports, education is a much different system than what I experienced in the 80’s and 90’s. The coursework is more challenging, the amount of homework is staggering and adding to the societal pressures is a regimen of vigorous standardized testing in every academic subject. I remember the days of fully coloring in the round bubble and strict adherence to the #2 pencil policy but in 2016, educators have traded in risk taking for test taking. When you take a deeper look at this model, the flaws become hugely apparent. Students are required to undergo weeks of meticulous testing; however the negative consequences really only affects the instructor. The student is rarely blamed for the negative outcome and the testing tool becomes just a random data witch hunt. Couple this system with the
understanding that most curriculum standards are set by administrators at a higher management level and you have a perfect storm of apathy, blame and indignation. I am sure most teachers are passionate and concerned about their students; however, resentment would be a perfectly natural outcome. In a true testing environment, shouldn’t some of the accountability also rest with the student? Where do we go next? On one hand, the testing model provides clear measurement of student progress but are we creating an atmosphere of memorization and not creative thought? In over twenty years, I have yet to start a workday where my superior comes in and hands me a test booklet and then lets me go when all the questions are finished. There is a part of me that applauds these students for their academic accomplishments but have we reduced children to lab rats? That is not a very kind statement but given the current state of public education, the previous hyperbole is not a very far leap. Look at the instructions that are sent home to parents…the worksheets resemble laboratory directives. Adding tests and removing some of the critical thinking exercises from my class syllabus would reduce my workload by nearly 50% but at the end of the day…I am not very fond of rats… even the cute little pinkies that are used in lab testing. Thank goodness, I still have the luxury of this decision. Public educators unfortunately, do not. So the question remains, what do we do now? QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS info@todayandtonight.com

EDITOR’S NOTE Welcome June, it is officially summer. That familiar heat and humidity that we all love will be here for the next few months. However, we have some great options for you to beat the heat. We have your pizza fix this month. You must try all of the pizza parlors we featured this month. It will surely keep you saucy. Come spend the day at the Chain Life Flotilla on Lake Eloise in Winter Haven on June 18th. With live music on a barge and hundreds of boats, it’s one of the best ways to stay cool. Don’t have a boat? How about a canoe or wave runner. It just needs to float to come party. June 1st starts Hurricane season. We all remember the Charley, Frances and Jeanne trifecta. Let’s stay on our toes and be prepared. As always, expect more, get more, we deliver. Chris Douglas Publisher

from service in the Navy, out of Pensacola, he bought a house and I went to school here. Grew up here back in the 60s. T&T MAG: I read that you were inspired musically by your sister playing The Beatles? LD: My sister was a few years older than me and she had all the latest and greatest stuff that was happening - up until a point. I took a cue from her until she started playing Connie Francis records and that was the end of that one! But all the Elvis stuff - I was into Elvis and Fabian, The Beach Boys and all of that, and then when The Beatles came around, that’s when I started taking more notice to the music. The Beatles were a great vocal band, great songs, it was a thing, you know, everyone was in awe of them, Beatlemania took hold. There were other great bands as well. As far as guitar playing goes, The Ventures was who I really got into. I was really into Nokie Edwards, Don Wilson, Bob Bogle and Mel Taylor, the best morph of The Ventures, when they did “Slaughter on 10th Avenue”, “Wipe Out” and “Pipeline” and all that stuff. They were just really innovative at that time. They were getting sounds out of their guitars that no one else was, and I was really interested in that. Then, when (Jimi) Hendrix came around, he had another whole take on it too. T&T MAG: And not too much later is when your music career started? LD: I had played all over the state, in local bands. After Duane Allman (of the Allman Brothers Band) was killed in the motorcycle crash our keyboard player knew Dickie Betts - he was from Venice, which was right next to Sarasota where Dickie was from, and my friend heard Dickie was looking for players because he didn’t know if the Allman’s were going to stay together or not at that point, I guess. So, we went up to jam with Dickie [in Macon, GA] and one thing led to another and I ended up playing on the Brothers and Sisters album (August 1973). T&T MAG: You actually played on the two biggest hits. Jessica and Ramblin’ Man. LD: Yes, and, I co-wrote Jessica. That’s one of the reasons I don’t talk to Dickie anymore. He didn’t want to give me any credit or royalties. He marched me right into Phil Walden’s office and had told him I co-wrote it, but, the powers that be kind of swept me under the rug. Shortly thereafter, I had already been playing with Boz Scaggs, and had a little help from my buddy Steve Miller to get out of that contract, I moved to California and was out there the better part of 20 years.

unday-Funday has a meaning all its own in Polk County. We are lucky enough to live in a climate where we fully enjoy an active, outdoor lifestyle and all the perks that go with it. As fortune would have it, our area is alive with music from every nook and cranny imaginable, and whether or not we know it, a lot of the music that gets played in our fantastic music establishments has a connection to a notable citizen, Les Dudek. On one of these recent, blissful days, I had the pleasure of meeting up with our neighbor, a local treasure, who was fresh from the shower after a day spent working in his yard. Les’ unassuming, candid style and storytelling prowess is

enjoyable to experience, and his resume allows for an abundant amount of material to share. In addition to his distinguished solo career, and the mighty stellar prog-rock/pop trio, The Dudek, Finnigan, Krueger Band, Dudek has played some fierce guitar with a diverse list of legends: The Steve Miller Band, Stevie Nicks, Cher, Boz Scaggs, The Allman Brothers Band, as well as Maria Muldaur, Bobby Whitlock, Mike Finnigan and Dave Mason. Dudek has appeared on memorable recordings; revered classic rock masterpieces, and his own songwriting has made its way onto celebrated albums. T&T MAG: I’m curious if people know who you are.
Les Dudek: Some do, some don’t. I’ve kept it low-key around this area for a long time because this is where I’ve lived. When people ask where I live I just say Polk County. T&T MAG: I bet when people find out they may go a little crazy for you. LD: Yeah, when they find out what I’ve done. Then it’s like the Joe Walsh song - everybody’s so different, I haven’t changed. T&T MAG: Yes! That’s good. How long have you been in Polk County? LD: Well, I grew up here. I was originally from Rhode Island, Quonset Point Naval Air Station, Rhode Island. When my dad retired
T&T MAG: And you were working. LD: Yeah, I was a Cinderella story. I got signed to Columbia Records. Literally when I got signed I was starving in San Francisco and wondering what I was going to do next. Now, this [story] is all in one day. The way the day started was I had this manager call me up. I had already done some demos for Columbia but nothing had happened. And Herbie Herbert called me up and goes, “Les, I’m starting a band and I want the two guitar banditos from the Bay area to be in the same band. I want you to come down and sit in and jam with these guys.” I said, well, what do you got? He says, “I want you and Neil Schon to play in this band and I want to call it Journey.” He told me to come to the studio and rehearse so I went down there. And, you know, before I get down there I get a call from

Ellen Bernstein, who was a rep from Columbia Records, and she said she’d like to take a meeting with me. It just so happened that Columbia was right across the street from the rehearsal hall. So, I tell her I’ll stop in. I go to SIR, Studio Instrument Rentals, it was me, Neil Schon, Ross Valory, Gregg Rolie and Aynsley Dunbar and we were all in this room, all jamming, I mean, I thought, this is some wild stuff. I mean, this is before Steve Perry. And we’re jamming, and I tell them, hey, I’ve got to go take this meeting across the street, and that I’d be right back. T&T MAG: Wow. LD: Yeah. So, I go in there, and I find out the meeting is with the President and Vice President of Columbia Records, and they offer me a solo deal on the spot! They signed me and Bruce Springsteen that week. Just the two of us. So, I say, well, I guess I’ll go tell the guys I’m not going to be in the band. And I go home, and I get a call from Capitol Records. It was an A&R guy. They offered me a deal and wanted Steve Miller to produce it. So, I went from not knowing how I was going to pay my bills to - I could have been in Journey or a solo deal with Columbia with Boz producing or a solo deal with Capitol with Steve producing and I chose Boz. And that’s the way my solo career started. T&T MAG: Well. What a day! That is some crazy stuff. LD: I knew Bruce because he’d come hang out with us when I’d do the big elaborate shows with Boz. He’d put on these things with a big, 45 piece orchestra, at a theater in Oakland. You can find it on YouTube. The second one is. I’m wearing a
white suit. The San Francisco Chronicle said, “the girls were beautiful, the orchestra was beautiful, Boz was beautiful... even Les Dudek was beautiful!” [Laughs] T&T MAG: Well, now we’re all going to go look that up! Hear that? That’s the sound of my imagination running wild! So, you went with Boz at the start. How many albums did you put out? LD: I did 5 albums with Columbia Records. Four were solo albums and one was a band album I did with two guys that had been playing with Dave Mason, Mike Finnigan and Jim Krueger. Krueger is the guy who wrote “We Just Disagree” for Mason. We did an album called “DFK”, Dudek, Finnigan and Krueger, about 1979, came out in 80. Then I did an album with Cher called “Black Rose”. Then we did a movie together called “Mask”. T&T MAG: And you were in Mask. LD: Yeah, I was one of the bikers, Bone, and I rode a big Peter Fonda bike. T&T MAG: You dated Cher, didn’t you? LD: I lived with Cher. T&T MAG: You lived with Cher. LD: Yeah, for 3 years. [Laughs] T&T MAG: I bet you have a lot of stories! LD: I think I’ve met every Lady Diva there is. From Elizabeth Taylor to Bette Middler. T&T MAG: That’s amazing. So are you still writing now? What do you listen to that’s not yours?
LD: I put out three albums on my label, E-Flat Productions, but it’s not quite the same as doing a major label. There’s “Deeper Shades of Blues”, “Freestyle!”, and the most recent one, “Delta Breeze” (2013). T&T MAG: Do you find yourself attracted to the same style? LD: I’m always going to lean towards a certain way, but I’ve got two sides of me: the electric and the acoustic. So, it varies. When I’m playing electric, it’s going to be more rock ‘n roll. T&T MAG: If you weren’t a musician, what do you think you would be doing? LD: You know, I’ve thought of that many times. In fact, I tried to just do something else and always got pulled back into it. Right before I left California I was going to become a northern California sheriff. T&T MAG: Really? Sheriff Dudek! LD: Yeah, I had just had it with the music business. But I promised (legendary music promoter) Bill Graham. He made me solemnly swear that I would never quit playing my guitar. And when you promise... that’s like swearing to God. He’d come back from the afterlife to haunt me. You know, I have a lot of respect for Bill, did a lot of shows for him. He had the Fillmore East, the Fillmore West, Winterland (Ballroom), Day on the Green. He was just a phenomenal promoter, it was a sad day when Bill Graham died. He was a really big part of music. When the Bill Grahams and the Berry Feys and all the big promoters, when they’re gone and radio is gone and the record companies are gone, it’s just a whole different can of worms now. I came just that close to becoming a northern California sheriff and then I got an offer from John Kay to come play in Steppenwolf, so, let’s see now... which one... T&T MAG: Yeah.... Steppenwolf. LD: Yeah, and John Kay paid more money [Laughs]. T&T MAG: So, you’re still going. LD: Still hacking at it. T&T MAG: You’ve got a lot of shows coming up. And you’ve got one at Derry Down. LD: Yeah. T&T MAG: What do you think of it there? LD: Oh, I think it’s great. I love Anita Strang and what she’s doing, and I just think that place is great. I’ll be there June 11th. Me and Jim Stafford, we’re still here, and with Derry Down, it’s not just a place for the professionals to come and play, it’s a place for the up and coming talent to have a place to try their stuff out and try to do their thing. That’s the whole idea that Graham Parsons had to begin with. So, it’s just a reality coming true again, after 30 years of just sitting there as a warehouse, and we’re really trying to turn it in to a nice listening room for original music. We hope everyone will continue supporting it. T&T MAG: Absolutely. That will always be something that’s needed, and what a wonderful thing to have right here in the heart of Polk, steeped with such important musical history. Thank you so much for taking the time out to speak with us. You’ve done many amazing things and have contributed a lot that has influenced the music lovers of several generations. We thank you for that too. Keep rockin’, Les! For upcoming events and information visit lesdudek.com. Tickets for Les Dudek at Graham Parsons Derry Down on June 11, 2016 are $20 and can be purchased online at mainstreetwh.com or by phoning (863) 295-9422.

BRIAN’S BRAIN
By Brian Bruchey
Anniversary Is Work My eighteenth wedding anniversary is coming up soon. I’m not saying this to elicit anniversary gifts… however, if you have some lake-front property you just want to give away to someone, I’m here for you. About a month away, and I shall be celebrating, not so much that my wife and I have accomplished so much, been through so much, and enjoy each other’s company so much. Celebrating eighteen years of wedded bliss? Not so much. I shall mark the anniversary of the day that I locked the woman into a marital contract. It’s sort of like when we went to Mexico on our honeymoon, and saw a pretty cool marble chess set for sale in the marketplace, and I managed to negotiate a selling price of five dollars off, and the merchant went for it. I look back on that and snicker, thinking, “Can’t believe the dude actually sold it to me for that price”. Yes, that’s how I feel about my anniversary. “Can’t believe this babe actually agreed to marry me”. Eighteen years later, and she and I are still together. I have no idea where the chess set is. Eighteen years together, and we still have never argued. Sure, we might get a little upset with each other, be a little grumpy, or whatever, but we’ve never argued. That’s mostly because my wife knows that it’s best to ignore me when I get upset. And I know that my wife can’t stay mad at me very long, because, c’mon, just take a look at me. You’d think that after being together for eighteen years, I would be a little wiser about her ways, but no. We don’t watch much tv in our house, but every once in a while, she’ll sit down and watch some HGTV. To me, this is known as CONDITION YELLOW. HGTV, and other channels that feature home improvement shows are dangerous for me. She starts getting these crazy ideas, like “Hey, we might be able to do this in our house”. The next step is when she pours herself a glass of wine, or two. Or
three. Then it’s suddenly, “Oh hell yeah, we can absolutely do this in our house. This weekend!” This is CONDITION RED. She’s got the ideas, and now the gumption. Never mind that the people on tv have a crew of many, and a budget of thousands. This past weekend though, she did something that had never happened. We went from CONDITION GREEN to CONDITION RED without warning. Out of the blue, she mentioned that she wanted a new kitchen sink. She had said this before, but I managed to evade purchase. Saturday was different. I humored her, we went to Lowe’s. I thought I had this under control. But somehow, not only was she in the mood for a new sink, but somehow, she had the desire for a new foyer light, and a new dining room light. This was overload to my brain. I managed to convince her that our sink was fine, we only needed a new faucet. And we bought one. But we also purchased two new light fixtures, and of course, five new LED bulbs for those light fixtures. After eighteen years, my wife had developed a new tactic. It was a sneak attack. I never saw it coming. No tv shows, no wine. It just happened, and it happened fast. Then she hit me with not one, not two, but three projects. I was overwhelmed. Savvy. I fear this was a warmup to our anniversary weekend. Help me. Brian “I lost my weekend” Bruchey bruchey@gmail.com QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS bruchey@gmail.com

Mellow Mushroom T
he “new kid on the block”, Mellow Mushroom opened its doors in Lakeland in March to rave reviews. It’s funky eclectic style makes for a fun dining experience. General manager, David Rogers has been in the hospitality industry for 20 years and was excited for the opportunity to work with this new Lakeland concept. Each Mellow Mushroom is themed differently. Owner, John Leonard loves space movies so that spilled over into his restaurant with hints of Star Trek, Star Wars and Transformers. We heard rumor that Mr. Leonard may even consider bringing another Mellow Mushroom to the Winter Haven area as well. Mellow Mushroom started in Atlanta, Georgia in 1974 and has grown to over 200 locations. It now has almost a cultlike following with its super-cool relaxed atmosphere. However, their pies are no joke. Known for their gourmet pizzas, yummy appetizers, hoagies and calzones. This is a must try place with something for everyone.. Lunch specials and happy hour specials coming soon. Most Popular Pizza: House Pizza & the Holy Shiitake Pie Most Popular “To Go” Pizza: Simpler Style Pizzas Most Popular Dish (besides pizza): Spinach Artichoke Dip. BRAINEXCERCISE Sudoku Puzzle STRANGE BUT TRUE BY SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was 19th-century Dutch post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh -- one of the most popular artists of all time -- who made the following sage observation: “Conscience is a man’s compass, and though the needle sometimes deviates, though one often perceives irregularities when directing one’s course by it, one must still try to follow its direction.” • Those who study such things say that penguins are so well insulated that, in general, they have a harder time staying cool than they do staying warm. • You’ve probably never wondered how to categorize the dill pickle, but some people have. Is it a fruit? Hard to say. The cucumber is, technically, a fruit -- part of the gourd family -- so it would seem that a pickle is, too. • You’ve almost certainly heard of the Rock of Gibraltar -- as a metaphor for strength and solidity, if for no other reason. This famed monolith of limestone on the European side of the Strait of Gibraltar, that narrow connection between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, makes up only half of the Pillars of Hercules. On the African side of the strait is Jabal Musa, and this southern half of the Pillars is twice as tall as its more famous partner to the north.

• Many people don’t realize that the popular name Renee means “reborn.”
ANSWERS
• The state of Delaware was named for Delaware Bay, which in turn was named for the first English governor of the colony of Virginia. His name was Thomas West, but his title was Baron De la Warr. Ultimately, his title is derived from the Old French term “de la werre,” which means “of the war.”

T&T MAG: How long have you been a bartender? Almost 5 years. KRISTIN: How long have you been at your current bar? Since February 2016. T&T MAG: What got you in to tending bar? KRISTIN: My best Friend Danni and I both started at Bar Red in Winter Haven together. T&T MAG: What is your favorite thing about your job? KRISTIN: My favorite thing about bartending was, and still is, learning new recipes, and learning different brands and spirits I never would have chose on my own. T&T MAG: What is the craziest thing you experience as a bartender? KRISTIN: Life as a bartender can have plenty of crazy moments - sometimes funny like a bar Halloween costume party. Sometimes dangerous. Its definitely a job that keeps you on your toes and takes experience to watch everything around you. T&T MAG: Your favorite drink to drink? KRISTIN: I have lots of favorites, but different styles of Mojitos are one. T&T MAG: What is one thing the average person does not know about you? KRISTIN: One thing people don’t know about me is I’m a nerd. I love things like reading, or putting puzzles together. My Pandora has artists like Chopin, Nina Simone, and Bush. I have an older taste for things. T&T MAG: Name something on your bucket list? KRISTIN: One thing on my bucket list is to write my own book. Even if i don’t publish it at least I did it.
T&T MAG: What do you do in your spare time? KRISTIN: In my spare time I spend time with my boyfriend Sean and our kids - they’re 5-, 7- and 8-years old. I’m happiest when we are all together doing things like fishing, painting or having bonfires. T&T MAG: Do you have any hobbies? KRISTIN: My hobbies include watching movies, painting, cooking and getting outside when its not 100 degrees! T&T MAG: Who are you inspired by? KRISTIN: I’m inspired by many things around me - family, friends, my kids, a good song, a quote. T&T MAG: Pick one – animal videos, karaoke, skydiving? KRISTIN: Animal videos all day. Who doesn’t like watching a hamster do back flips? T&T MAG: If you could pour a drink for anyone in the world, who would it be and why? KRISTIN: If I could pour a drink for anyone in the world it would be Robert Downey, Jr. I love his witty smug attitude towards everyone else’s ignorance. T&T MAG: Why should people come to your bar and have a drink? KRISTIN: People should come to Old Man’s because its that perfect hidden gem on the water. If you’re in the mood for a sunset, good music and yummy oysters kinda day, but don’t want to drive too far, its local - where everybody knows your name. T&T MAG: In closing, you’d like to say? KRISTIN: “Alcoholic friends are as easy to make as sea monkeys” -Anonymous
In North Carolina, they are debating over a law that will force people to use the bathroom of their biological birth gender. I know I may be misunderstood here, but this is not a political issue. Nope. It’s a crazy issue on many levels the least of which has to do with gender. We all know Big Brother has been watching us a long time, but if they are watching which bathroom we use they’ve gone too far. Also, every female I know is in serious trouble for violating the gender code of bathrooms. Every honest female will tell you if the women’s room is occupied and no one is looking we will use the men’s. It’s the truth. You know it ladies! I was on a road trip not long ago and someone’s child had locked themselves in the women’s bathroom. I went in the men’s room at the gas station. It is built exactly like the women’s room. The other woman did not turn me in and we laughed about it. She had done it too. Thank God we were not in North Carolina. They are a little more laid back in Savannah. Think about this long and hard before you let someone pass a public law on something as personal as this. Airlines don’t have male/female bathrooms. Many places of business only have one bathroom. There are foreign countries that have holes in the ground. So, if we are to remain the greatest country in the world, then let’s continue in that live free or die mentality. More laws make more problems

and just make attorneys happy. I could not keep a straight face if I was a judge listening to someone plead their case for being arrested for using an unlawful bathroom. I just couldn’t. It would crack me up. How would you plead? What defense could you use? How would you keep from laughing? If we tie up the courts with something as ridiculous as youcan’t-use-this-bathroom-law then the docket dates could be as long as….well as long as the line to the women’s bathroom at a sporting event. Not too long ago, I took a class at USF. They had a Gender-Neutral Bathroom. I was curious. I went in. It was everything it promised to be; neutral. It was the Switzerland of the bathroom law. This was long before the North Carolina debate occurred. Many college campuses have GenderNeutral bathrooms now. They are private. We need more of those bathrooms and less of these nutty people who want to tell us where to go when we have to go. JUNE 2016

Tinia Polk Clark
An Electrifying, Powerful, Transforming Art Project Guest Writer, Tinia Clark as told to Mary Joye Last month we talked about Tinia Polk Clark and her art. But wait there’s more! Tinia is going to talk about the other artists that have painted the electrical boxes in downtown Winter Haven. What makes Tinia so amazing to me personally is that she gives of her gifts. Her work with Polk Museum of Art and at her own Side Street Studio, as a healing arts facilitator has been such a blessing to our community. She painted one of the book exchange houses that are placed near the fountain in Winter Haven’s Central Park. Bring a book, take a book. It’s free! Tinia’s art is freeform, but always with purpose. The latest project she has helped to put together with other local artists is the electrical transforming power boxes around the park. What you may have never noticed before or just passed off as industrial necessities are now glorified as canvasses. Tinia was kind enough to take the time to tell us about this project. T&T MAG: Tell us about how this unique use of the power supply boxes as art projects was inspired. TINIA: The electrical utility box project
was undertaken by the City of Winter Haven’s Cultural Arts Advisory Committee. The city designated the boxes that we could enhance. The boxes are the city’s property as opposed to Tampa Electric Company (TECO). Emphasis on having permission can’t be overstated! T&T MAG: How were the artists chosen? TINIA: Our Utility Box subcommittee held a call for artists that were interested in participating. The artist’s selected to paint the boxes are an eclectic group with a wide range of vision and talents for their boxes. The stipulations were simple. The boxes require a metal primer, content must be family friendly, and they must be sealed upon completion and no attachments of a sculptural nature. The artist’s vary in age and experience levels. Each brings a unique perspective that demonstrates how art can be incorporated into our community on many levels. The boxes are in some instances located near the Sculptures on display. When the artist is there working on the boxes we have gotten a lot of positive feedback...something relatively simple can make a difference! T&T MAG: Tell us about your location. TINIA: My electrical box located at 3rd and Ave A SW (Close to her studio that is a must

visit place). It was a test piece for durability and materials. Like all of the boxes, it reflects the artist’s personality. Mine abstract and colorful, it was a fun project! T&T MAG: Tell us about the other contributors. TINIA: The artist’s that have already started their pieces (some of which are completed) are: Norma Roth. She is to me the elder statesman of the group and one of the most knowledgeable people I have ever met about Art and Life. Her age is an advantage. She is a sage and one of the best advocates for the arts. She took on two boxes and put floral imagery on them. (Near the fountain in Central Park, South end). Judy Winfree and Kathy Howell painted the bright colored sunset (Judy) and The Bok Tower impressionistic piece (Kathy) in the parking lot across from the Baptist Church, corner of 2nd SW and Central. Steven Storjohann demonstrates his “I can” attitude in the brightly colored hang ten/ Rubic’s cube piece located at the north end of Central Park. He is 27 years old and from Lakeland, he is inspiring in that he is on the Autism spectrum and a great example of how Art is for everyone. It can break down barriers. Steven also paints windows and designs logos. Kim Skinner is currently working on the box located on 1st St. South and Central with her daughter Hannah. She is using geometric shapes and soothing colors. Erica Greear will be working on the box in Virginia Miller Park. Paul Schulz will complete the 3 located in South Park this fall upon completion of the City South Park project. Trent Manning is also committed to paint the box located on 3rd NW next to Central Tavern. T&T MAG: Tell us about the funding. TINIA: This was a 100% Volunteer effort. Each Artist has provided their materials, time and talent to get this project going. We hope the city will identify more boxes to paint. It’s the little things in life that can make a huge difference. Art Matters! Yes, it does Tinia, particularly in Winter Haven. It has long been a bastion and sanctuary for creativity. I also had the pleasure of viewing a work in progress by Sheila Vertoli of Canvas Creations. She hosts art parties. As the sun was setting in a Sunday sky I asked her about her unique painting and she replied, “This project has been fun but mostly for the people I have met. Many have come up to me and watched me work and told me how much they appreciate it. It has been so much fun for me to meet so many people.” Like Tinia said, “Art matters”. It brings people together and in this case, in a very literal collective energy. JUNE 2016

Working at 97 Country has taught me a lot in the last 17 years, one of the most prevalent lessons is that once someone recognizes you as your “on air persona” while you are out enjoying your free time, you no longer have privacy. Everything you do or say, every smile or frown, any body language is being watched. I would like to believe that most people are good…but let’s face it, some people are jealous, some are haters, some are just evil. I’ve been completely out of our listening area (keep in mind we cover over 32 Florida counties), I was recognized…and BOOM, just like that…my walls went up and my privacy ended. It gets to me sometimes…but in reality…I’m blessed to be able to have more of the “good” in my life than the bad. There’s NO possible way that I can even imagine being someone like Blake Shelton or Miranda Lambert. (maybe I can imagine it, if I had their paychecks! Haha) Go through any grocery check-out lineand you will see some sort of rag magazine with the latest “news” on Miranda and Blake…not to mention all of the gossip columns online. Blake and Miranda shocked us all when it was announced last July that they indeed were divorced. Just one day we all woke up, and there it was…the divorce was final…kudos to them for keeping it under the hat. There has been speculation that SHE cheated, then speculation that HE cheated. The truth is, it’s nobody’s business but theirs…but being caught up in their drama is easier than being caught up in our own. With all that being said, Blake recently released a brand new album entitled “If I’m Honest.” Blake said in a press release, “I’ve never been as proud of an album as a body of work as I am of this one,” calling this album “so important to me and basically autobiographical.” This statement left me curious about his album, so I listened…this is what I heard… BITTNERNESS! RESENTMENT! REVENGE!
BLAKE SHELTON the first punches at his ex-wife. If anyone knows of Miranda Lambert’s personality, I can’t see her taking this on the side of her cheek. I’m sure there WILL be a retaliation album in the works…if not already started. Blake’s first single that was released off the album is entitled “Came Here to Forget.” It actually IS the best song on the album, lyrically and production-wise. Speaking of the production of the album…musically, “If I’m Honest” has a distinctly edgier sound than his previous albums. There are songs that feature Blake’s sarcasm and wit that he’s known for…and actually a gospel song on the album called “Savior’s Shadow.” Blake is in a new relationship with Gwen Stefani, and she actually has a duet on this album with him titled “Go Ahead & Break My Heart.” I will just keep my opinion on this one to myself. I wish the best for Blake AND Miranda. Everybody deserves happiness…everybody deserves privacy. I’m just not sure I would have been so “in your face” to my ex if the roles were reversed. Happy Summer y’all…I hope that I didn’t upset any Blake OR Miranda fans with this…definitely was NOT my intention. I just feel bad for both parties…too bad it didn’t work out. In less controversial news, don’t forget that Brandy Clark has her new album coming out this month…that’s a MUST HAVE!
BY SARA MICHAELS Not saying it’s a bad album at all, actu- Host of “On The Porch” ally it’s one of his best. The songs that he Monday - Friday, 3pm - 7pm 97 Country WPCV, 97.5 FM selected for this album definitely threw
