LUBECK RELEASES SIXTH ALBUM - DRAGONFLY Central Florida singer/songwriter Michael LuBecke - LuBeck, proudly announces the release of his sixth studio album: Dragonfly. The five song disc features three new songs and two previously unreleased tracks, all to be performed, along with his other favorited originals, by a full band at the album release party, slated for July 1, 2018 at Tanner’s Lakeside in Winter Haven, FL. “I’m very excited to have this project finally come to fruition! I’ve been working on some of these songs for years and I’m happy to share them with everyone”, says LuBeck. Two tracks, including the title track Dragonfly, were recorded by the talented Winter Haven musician and producer Mike Richards, who also mixed and mastered the release. Mike will sit in on bass guitar for the CD release party. Also joining LuBeck’s band for the event, on keyboard, is his musical brother, the classically trained Greg “Wolfman” Schlietwiler, with whom he was a member of noted Chicago band Eat a Peach, and who performed on the album’s gospel track Show Me The Way. Rounding out the band lineup for the party is skilled drummer Danny Richard of The Smokey River Band. The airy, catchy, ethereal sounds of local band Spirit and the Cosmic Heart

The process of moving from one house to another is underway in the Bruchey family. It’s the great move from one side of Winter Haven to the other side. We’re moving on up in the Zip Code world. Cue the theme song from TV’s “The Jeffersons”. We have resided in the same house for the past thirteen years. When we built the house in 2005, it was just me and my wife. In the years since, we’ve added one child, one dog, one turtle, five hamsters, and eleven fish. Sadly, only the boy and the turtle have survived to make the move with me and my wife. However, my boy’s behavior may yet prevent him from making the move. Maybe when we sell our current house, we could throw in a nine-year-old boy as part of the deal. We could tell the potential buyers that he could mow their lawn. Probably better not do that…we might get sued because he’s defective. As we near the completion of construction of our new house, we’re closing in on the point where all of our stuff has got to be packed up and ready to move. My wife and I had two totally different views on packing: She felt that we needed to get everything packed up, and I felt like if we waited long enough, everything would just magically get packed up, and I wouldn’t have to do much at all. Amazingly, it looks like we were both correct. I’m not saying I didn’t help much. I can’t tell you how many times I had to move my feet from the coffee table just so she could get past me with a big box of whatever. I may have even built up some extra muscle in my legs from moving them away from the table so much. I cannot lie; my wife did most of the work in packing up our house. And I did try to help, several times. I would ask her, “You want me to move that?” And she would reply, “No. You keep playing your games on the computer.” I have to say, that

SIGN UP FOR OUR NEW WEEKLY EMAIL NEWSLETTER AT WWW.TODAYANDTONIGHT.COM

she was very sweet about volunteering to do the work. I think the moving experience has taken a toll on my wife, especially with her manners. In the beginning of the process, she would say things like, “Could you please move your feet?” “Would you please help me move the refrigerator?” And toward the end, she stopped saying please. So many times in recent weeks, my wife has said, “Can we throw this away?” And I’d look to see what she was talking about, and I’d reply, “I haven’t seen that in ten years! We need to keep that, in case I ever need it again!” I don’t think she fully grasps the importance and awesomeness of my stuff. I am not a hoarder. We don’t have boxes and boxes of stuff piled up in every room, and you don’t have to make your way through a tunnel just to get from the kitchen to the bathroom. I have stuff…just not that much stuff. The plan is for this to be our final move. Well, the final move for my wife and I. My son has about nine more years there before he’s going to have to move. I figure there is a possibility we may move again someday. Those odds are the exact same as us winning the Powerball Lottery, since that would be the only way we would move. And if that happens, I am going to pay someone else to move my stuff. It’s way too hard for me to sit back and watch my wife do all of that hard work by herself. URINETOWN

A Hilarious Musical Satire of the Legal System by James Coulter Imagine a future where there are no private bathrooms. Where relieving yourself is a privilege. And where you have to make a collect call whenever Mother Nature calls. This dour yet whimsical view of a dystopian future is showcased through “Urinetown”, a three-time Tony award-winning musical coming to the Lakeland Community Theatre this July. “Urinetown” is an irreverent satire of political and economic corruption as well as a 10 JUNE 2018

spoof of musical theater, poking fun at such classics as “The Threepenny Opera” and “Les Misérables.” Nick Judy, the director for this Lakeland production, fell in love with the musical many years ago, as it had him laughing so hard that he was crying by the final curtain. Since then, he and many others have been pushing for the musical to be hosted in Lakeland; and now that the production is finally moving forward, he anticipates directing it with a little bit of his own irreverent yet equally reverent take on the American musical art form.

“So [by] adding my own bit of sense of humor...we will have a really good time poking fun at the format and style while also celebrating it,” Judy said. “The music is amazing, the dances are fun, the story itself is really hilarious, and you will have a really good time across the board.” With this being their final show of the 32nd season, Lakeland Community Theatre has been growing each and every year, growing from five main shows a year to six, along with several workshops, classes, and a special needs program, “Out of the Box”, explained Bernadette Heaps, Business Manager.

Urinetown Director, Nick Judy works on props for an upcoming show.

Their 32-year-long success has not only been due to the diversity of their productions, but also the overall high professional quality, rivaling that of many larger theaters, Heaps said. “Our productions are much better-quality productions than people expect,” she said. “We hear a lot from our audience that they have seen shows from the RP Funding Center and they think we do it at least as good if not better because our production quality is so high.” Alan Reynolds, Artistic Managing Director of Lakeland Community Theatre, who has more than 36 years of experience in theatre, television, and film, became its leader nine years ago. In that short time the theatre’s budget has doubled increasing overall production quality, established a sustainability endowment, launched a special needs troupe which has grown from 10 to over 100 participants, formed the Page to Stage troupe that brings live theatre to area Title One schools at no charge, and founded a Senior Troupe. Even in spite of cuts to art funding from the state, the theater continues to offer professional high-quality productions with affordable ticket prices, Reynolds said. “Our mission is to make the theater available and accessible to all,” he said. “We are not just a place to see a great show. We do a lot of great things for our community.” Reynolds has raised Judy “since he was a pup” as a young man volunteering in Theater Winter Haven, even being able to perform alongside him on the stage. He appreciates Judy’s sense of humor, and as such, considered him the best director to tackle the satirical “Urinetown.” “He is very funny,” he said. “It is just a great show, and Nick is wired in such a way that he is going to do a fine job.” Judy was inspired to enter musical theater

at the young age of seven, performing in many local theater companies. Upon graduating high school, Judy would attend Polk State College, and later Florida State University. During this time, he worked the college circuits for several companies such as Theatre Winter Haven before graduating with his bachelor’s degree in theater studies. After college, he performed some freelance work before being picked up by his mentor, Alan Reynolds, the creative director of Lakeland Community Theatre, where Judy rose up the ranks to his current position, and where he has been working ever since for the past decade. During his career, he has tackled a new project every month, often working on one to two shows each month within a different area.

What keeps him motivated has been the collaboration with other directors and artists to create the most out of their creative ideas, putting their own individual pieces together to form a larger, better product. “We have a lot of new actors and talent in the show that are accomplished in their life but have not been on Lakeland stages before and so I am really excited by the audience getting an opportunity to see these new and fresh faces,” he said. “Urinetown” will be performed at Lakeland Community Theatre, located at 121 S. Lake Avenue in Lakeland. Performances are on July 13, 14, 15, and on the 20, 21, and 22. OLE TAMPA CUBANS Feel of Ybor In Your Back Yard

Guava pastry.

18 JUNE 2018

By Amy Sumerlin Photos By Chris Douglas

“When I was a boy,” Dwayne Williams began, “my Dad worked for an oil company, and I would hang out with him on Saturdays down at the Port of Tampa.” Hanging out with Dad created cherished memories – and some of them were about what they ate on those days. “We would eat Devil Crabs from one local place; and get authentic Cuban sandwiches from another,” he remembered. “Those tastes inspired me.” LEARNING THE INDUSTRY Acting on that inspiration, Dwayne started working in the restaurant industry before he could drive – when he was just 14. After working at the original (before it became a buffet) Buddy Freddy’s for 10 years, he remained in the food industry, but moved to Mutual Wholesale Company. During his career there, he rose through the ranks to management and, in the process, received a great education about logistics, warehousing, and distribution cycles for the industry… and he would also, from the relationships with vendors that he built, learn which ones delivered the best, freshest food. His next step was back to a restaurant; he was the Chief Operating Officer for a local buffet chain, playing a key role in

its growth. “But I had a vision,” he said. “I really wanted to put all that I had learned into building my own brand.” THE BEGINNING OF HIS BRAND Dwayne’s first venture into the business is a quaint diner, Dwayne’s Place, just North of Mulberry on Florida Avenue. Dwayne’s Place is where you go for true Southern cuisine -- think fried green tomatoes, pork chops like Mama used to serve on Sunday afternoon, patty melts, and pies. Homemade pies. A TASTE OF TAMPA Dwayne always knew that

Dwayne’s Place wasn’t where his brand would end: Those Cuban flavors that inspired him in his youth continued to dance in his head. “I really wanted to bring the taste and feel of Tampa Bay to Polk County,” he explained. And so, in October 2017, Ole Tampa Cubans opened its doors. The focus at Ole Tampa is on the food – if you are imagining a fancy, white tablecloth restaurant, stop. Instead, picture a cheerful roadside eatery with a comfortable patio area, which would be fabulous on a beautiful May or even November afternoon. For me, however, it was the mention of “Call Ahead Drive Thru Pick Up” on a busy Monday night that called my name. And indeed, everything was ready

for me when I pulled up to the window. “You must be hungry,” she said with a laugh, as I had ordered one of nearly everything on the menu. If you’re thinking I spent a lot of money that night, you are thankfully incorrect. My total bill didn’t even hit $40. THE FOOD My husband and my mom joined me for this feast. Hubby tried the El Cubano, William’s version of the Tampa-style Cuban (Tampa immigrants incorporated their love for Genoa salami into the beloved sandwich from their homeland), $7.50 for a whole. Because Mom is a fan of tomato and lettuce, I had ordered the American Cuban for her, also $7.50. Both versions start with bread baked at Ybor’s historic La Segunda Central Bakery. In between those slices of light, airy heaven, you find paper-thin sweet ham; flavorful, moist pork that William roasted for hours, and, of course, Swiss cheese and pickles. Hubby would have been ticked if I forgot the Black Beans and Rice, so that was on the order. The table became especially quiet as he tried that – this part was his favorite. This bowl includes slow-cooked black beans, seasoned white rice, diced onions, fresh pico de gallo, cilantro and lime. At $7.95, it could have been a meal by itself. I tried The Port Salad ($8.99)— which included all my favorite parts of Cuban fare – the ham, salami, pork, Swiss cheese, and even the black beans—on a huge bed of lettuce.

That way, I could save my carbs

for the Devil Crabs (4.50)—which

were an absolute delight with their

thin crust and fresh crab meat. “There are no fillers in my Devil Crabs,”

Williams explained. “And I spent

months developing and perfecting that recipe.”

And fresh is key – Williams doesn’t

hold leftovers to sell tomorrow. “We

make a certain amount and when it’s gone, it’s gone.”

Same goes for the guava pastries

($1.99), which are made each day

by his wife. On that Monday night,

there were only two left, and I took

both (apologies to whoever showed up after me). Mom and I enjoyed those and were especially tickled

with the flaky crust and warm guava

jam. Next time, I will call in earlier to reserve more.

THE FUTURE Williams said he is keeping his

menu simple, because he plans

to duplicate the concept in other

locations; the shop will be in Plant City, where he grew up. Others

will follow as he finds just the right location.

So if you haven’t yet experienced

Ole Tampa, give it a try. “Visitors to

my restaurants are more than guests;

more than a transaction: They are my friends,” Williams said.

are at odds to convert the equation. Chemistry provides that all mixtures can be activated or reduced with the addition of heat, radiation or a neutral base. Month after month, we see the current societal formula is out of balance but we are unable to agree on what part of the solution needs to be neutralized. Perhaps, taking a cue from science and adding another potential variable to the mix is part of the answer. Emotions and feelings are no longer appreciated and we have abandoned many of the outlets that once were so important to the creation of a good citizen. Systematically, art, music and field trips were removed from most of our public school programs due to a lack of funding. Arts programming may still remain in limited areas; however, the amount of dollars dedicated to these pursuits have been slashed. Our system generated an entire generation of “products” to be tested and evaluated…in essence, an unbalanced chemical equation. Students cannot process emotions and feelings because we removed the elements that help us express humanity. Violence and power becomes the accelerant and we are left with a model that erupts. The learning environment longer nurtures with art and exploration but accelerates with negativity and hopelessness. The mass shootings in our nation are not a phenomena but an outcome of an improper life equation. We have the tools to be better; we just need to remember the beauty of being a human. TID BITS TRACEY’S

By Tracey Greene

Hurricane Preparedness Alberto, Beryl, Chris, Debby, Ernesto, Florence, Gordon, Helene, Isaac, Joyce, Kirk, Leslie, Michael, Nadine, Oscar, Patty, Rafael, Sara, Tony, Valerie, William These are the Atlantic Tropical Cyclone Names for 2018. The forecast is that we will see 10-16 Named Storms this season with 5-9 Hurricanes developing, and of those, 1-4 being Major Hurricanes. While it is the responsibility of the government to be prepared prior to these natural disasters, it is also our responsibility as a community, the general public, to be prepared. After the 2017 active hurricane season, hopefully those procrastinators from last year will be vigilant in their preparedness for this year. Harvey, Irma and Maria wreaked havoc on Texas, Florida and the Caribbean. Puerto Rico is still in shambles after almost 9 months. It’s predicted to take years for them to fully recover. This is my story of being prepared. At the first sign that we may have a hurricane coming our way, each and every time I go to Publix, Lowes or even Wal-Mart, I always buy something extra to add to the household arsenal of supplies. Looking for items that are on the weekly sales that we can useful during an emergency. BOGOs are your friends! Bottled water! I keep two 24 or 32 packs on hand. This is the first item to fly off the shelves during an alert of a storm. I also have two Brita water pitchers, so I make sure that a new pack of filters is purchased. Batteries are a must have! They are also one of the top items to sell out before a hurricane. Make sure that you check around your house to see which sizes of batteries that you need. Don’t assume everything takes the same battery. Take a count and buy extras. Flashlights! I have a flashlight in each room for emergencies. Take them out and make sure that they work. I also have candles, but they can get messy as well as heat up rooms quickly when your power is out. No power = no A/C. Foods/Snacks! Canned chicken and tuna. Soups. Peanut butter. Cereals. Nuts and dried fruits. Protein bars. Granola bars. These are some of your best friends to keep on hand for an emergency. Don’t forget the manual can opener! Ice is king! I started collecting extra ice from my ice maker a week prior

28 JUNE 2018

to the hurricane. I doubled (plastic) bagged them and stored in my deep freezer. I also started making blocks of ice and stored in my deep freezer. I then bought two 20 pound bags of ice to store in my deep freezer. In other words, my deep freezer was full of ice. I knew that if all else failed, my deep freezer would hold a cold temperature for several days without power – it could be used the same way a cooler is used to store food, etc. But, you have to leave it closed as much as possible. The Grill! One of the most important items. Clean your grill in advance. Make sure that it is great working order. Make sure that you have your tank filled with gas and get a spare tank to also fill with gas. Every adult or older youth in your household should know the basics of the grill: how to turn it on/off, how to switch out the tank, etc…You can cook everything you need on a grill. Please note, DO NOT cook inside with your grill. Grills must have enough air to circulate around them so you do not get sick from the fumes. Generators! Are your best friends! If you have one, make sure to maintain it on a yearly cycle. If you are thinking of purchasing one, do it before the scare of the first storm. These also fly off the shelves. Do your research to get the biggest bang for your buck: How long can it run on a tank of gas? What can you run off of it? How noisy is it? How easy is it to start? WARNING: NEVER use a generator inside. Many lost their lives during the hurricanes due to this ignorance. If you aren’t able to buy a generator, hopefully you have a nice neighbor that does. Keep extra extension cords on hand as well as extra gas to help keep the generator running. I am very fortunate to have the best neighbors in the world. They very graciously shared their generator each day so that we could keep the refrigerator going as well as the TV to keep up to date on the storm. We were also able to keep all cell phones charged up as well. Pets! Don’t forget about them. Make sure all of their needs are covered with enough supplies for 5 extra days after your power goes out. This includes any medications or special diets they are on. In addition, a couple of my more favorite hurricane supply purchases came from Lowes; a full rain suit and a powerful light to wear on my head. I needed to see where I was going when taking the dogs out to go potty and hands free was the way to go! My rain suit also kept me as dry as possible.

Cash! Make sure that you have a couple hundred dollars set aside in cash prior to the storm. As they say, cash is king! Even prior to hurricane Irma hitting, some establishments started taking cash only. It pays to be extra prepared… Storms are really scary but getting prepared on the outside and inside of your home as well as getting all of your supplies in order will make

you feel that much more secure when the storm is barreling down on you! Veterinarian of the Month When Loren Nations graduated from Winter Haven High School in 1981 his dreams of becoming an influential veterinarian in a big city would follow many paths. After graduating from UF with his veterinary degree in 1991 he completed a medical and surgical internship at the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan, NY considered the Johns Hopkins of veterinary medicine. Instead of remaining in New York City he returned home to practice “big city” medicine with his mentor Dr. John Maxwell. Dr. Nations’ desire to help animals and commitment to practice at the highest level led to specialty board certification in canine and feline practice, one of only 425 ABVP diplomats in the country and 27 in the state. With this expertise, the practice has flourished into a seven doctor 24 hour emergency and critical care hospital, specialty referral center, and general practice. Dr. Nations has devoted his life to creating a center that will improve our pet’s lives for years to come. The completion of a state-of-the-art 10,000 square foot veterinary center is only the beginning of the medical advancements Dr. Nations hopes to bring to Central Florida. “My life revolves around my family and animals. They are one and the same, that is who I am and why I am so passionate about being a veterinarian.”

BRAINEXCERCISE Sudoku Puzzle STRANGE BUT TRUE BY SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was noted wit Ambrose Bierce who made the following sage observation: “All are lunatics, but he who can analyze his delusion is called a philosopher.” • You might be surprised to learn that in January 2004, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of maggots as a medical device for cleaning wounds. • Presidential security was not always as formidable as it is today. In 1913, former President Theodore Roosevelt was walking down a Milwaukee street, heading to a speech he was scheduled to give. A man named John Schrank pulled out a gun and shot toward Roosevelt, who staggered but did not fall. There was no blood evident, and Roosevelt, who was campaigning for a second term, insisted on delivering his speech. When he pulled from a coat pocket the 100 pages on which his speech was written, he saw a bullet hole through the sheets of paper. Still determined to carry on, he gave his speech before going to the hospital, where it was discovered that the bullet had penetrated four inches into his body. After the perpetrator was arrested, it became evident that Schrank was insane; he claimed that President William McKinley had revealed to him in a dream that Roosevelt was responsible for McKinley’s assassination. Schrank spent the next 32 years in an insane asylum.
