Fest By Elizabeth Morrisey Downtown Bartow comes alive the third Friday of each month with Main Street Bartow Friday Fest which includes different themes and live music, activities and food starting at 6 p.m. And it’s free! On June 21, the theme is class reunion where Bartow graduates can meet up, see former classmates and even hold fundraisers. The Bartow High School class of 1974 wanted to arrange a reunion downtown and decided to include all graduates of Bartow schools. “Different classes have committed to coming. It will be a great night,” says Linda Holcomb, executive director of Main Street Bartow. There will be a DJ, activities and fundraisers such as bake sales from 6 to 9 p.m. All Friday Fests include a classic car show, food and entertainment. July’s theme will be all about summer fun

with plenty of kid’s activities, Holcomb says. August will be the 7th Annual Bartow Idol in which singers can tryout for a spot and the Top 10 perform two songs at Main Street Bartow Friday Fest. Judges award 1st, 2nd and 3rd place with cash prizes. “It’s a lot of fun,” says Holcomb. “It’s popular because it’s local talent. People love American Idol and this is our version of it. People you know are singing. It’s entertaining and people really enjoy coming out.” Plans are still in the works, but September will most likely be pet-themed. October is the 3rd Annual Bartowberfest with German music, beer, a stein hoisting contest and food vendors. “It’s Bartow’s version of an Octoberfest,” Holcomb explains. Magic on Main will be November 15 as Bartow shines with Christmas lights. And this year Friday Fest will be held in December as well with “Sounds of the Season.” Holcomb

says all of the Friday Fests help to promote the city and downtown. “It’s great community involvement and businesses love having the foot traffic.” This is the 15th year for Friday Fest and it continues to grow. This is the second year that downtown shop Indigo Moon has participated. They stay open until 9 p.m. offering $5 painting classes for kids and people can browse the shop. Indigo Moon offers handmade items from local artisans, oils, incense and books from local authors, says owner Deanine Mulpagano. “This event gives us exposure to maybe those who don’t know about us,” she explains, adding that they have been downtown for two years. “We love it here. People care that we are here and welcoming. You don’t get that everywhere, but you get that here in Bartow. The town embraces you.”

SCREAM'N TUNA Not Afraid to Go Outside the Box

By Amy Sumerlin Photos by Chris Douglas “They believed in me,” Jordan Poulos said, as he began to tell me the story behind Scream’n Tuna Sushi. You see, Jordan is a young entrepreneur – just 25 – who had a dream to own his own sushi restaurant. “I have always been interested in food, even in high school,” he explained. After high school, Poulos spent five years working at a Sebring sushi restaurant – three of those years as an apprentice to the chef. And that is when his father, David Poulos, and family friend Mike Crivello, who had experience in the restaurant industry, displayed their belief in the younger Poulos by stepping up as investors. “We looked all around – Winter Haven, Lake Wales, even Tampa – before deciding on our location,” Poulos continued. “I just love downtown Lakeland’s atmosphere.” LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION To be more exact, Scream’n Tuna resides in the NoBay District, which is quite young, too.

The brainchild of Lakeland city government, the goal of NoBay is to provide Lakeland residents with a day-to-night urban environment. The area is literally built on top of what was once a large public parking lot. The end result is an urban village reminiscent of a SOHO or perhaps Tampa’s Hyde Park that offers stylish residential options with retail and restaurants. If I were still a 20-something, I’d live there. THE RESTAURANT The location itself is sleek and modern – exactly the vibe required for a sushi place in NoBay. “Dad works in the construction industry,” Poulos continued, “so he was invaluable as we got the restaurant off the ground.” Commuting over an hour every day during build out, the elder Poulos handled the construction detail – and since it was a new location, he had to start from scratch. “He even did the painting and tile work,” Poulos continued, obviously proud of his father’s talents. The restaurant itself is small – but its menu is not. THE FOOD One Friday not too long ago, I decided to try Scream’n Tuna and share with co-workers and my daughter who stopped by the office. I think she will always stop by to see me if sushi is involved. To try as many of their choices as possible, I ordered the P1 Party Combo ($28.95), which included two pieces each of tuna, salmon, white fish (I believe it was haddock), shrimp, imitation crab, eel, California roll, and tuna roll. With 26 pieces in all, it is a great option if you need to bring “something” to a party – especially if you’re meeting a crowd that prefers their seafood raw. Personally, I loved the California roll and Randy, one of the co-workers who joined me, said his favorite was the salmon, which was obviously fresh – and that is something Poulos demands: “We always get good quality, fresh seafood,” he said. I particularly enjoyed the shrimp rolls, as well, but have decided that eel is an acquired taste. 8 JUNE 2019

My daughter? She loved it all. We also enjoyed the Appetizer Deluxe ($6.95), which included two each of Spring Rolls, Krab Rangoons, and Potstickers. Even those who joined us who aren’t exactly fans of sushi enjoyed everything on that platter. I was such a fan of the Rangoons that I might get just an order of those next time. Next time – and there will definitely be a next time -- I also want to try their fried rice, which you can get made with a variety of proteins, including chicken, shrimp, steak, and even lobster. Prices range from $10.95 to $15.95. And that’s not all. When I spoke to Poulos, he seemed especially proud of a few of his outside the box menu items, and I want to give those a shot. “One of our sushi chefs is from Puerto Rico, and he loves to bring in items that showcase that

culture’s influence,” he described. “For example, our Criollo Roll ($12.95) features chicken, cream cheese, and avocado topped with plantains, spicy mayo, and eel sauce.” The Sushi Pizza ($18.50) sounds fun, too – it’s a deep-fried rice patty topped with cream cheese, salmon, tuna, kani, and avocado. Real Green New Deal In April, I wrote about how the GOP, despite claiming to support the “free market”, often rig the market in favor of fossil fuels (https:// bit.ly/2vhogUi). In May, I wrote about how fossil fuels create less jobs than renewable energy (https://bit. ly/2QffQqo). This month, for my third and final eco-themed column, I’ll be offering proposals on how the GOP can actually support the free market and protect the environment. I’m sure most of you know about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and her “Green New Deal”, a series of policy proposals to help combat climate change and stimulate the economy. While I admire her intent, I find many of her proposed policies like getting rid of farting cows and airplanes rather radical, if not farfetched. Obviously, the GOP doesn’t like AOC’s Green New Deal either, but they have yet to offer a viable alternative. Well, allow me to offer such an alternative. Here’s how the GOP can help cut carbon emissions and create new jobs: #1: END OIL SUBSIDIES Eco-warriors like AOC propose curbing air pollution through a carbon tax. The problem is that such a tax raises gas prices for the poor and middle class. Rather than punish the working class, we should instead target the actual perpetrators of carbon emissions: fossil fuel companies. Fossil fuels receive nearly $14 billion per year in federal subsidies and $5 billion from state subsidies, according to The Guardian. These subsidies are nothing more than the state picking winners and losers in the marketplace rather than letting the free market decide. Ending these subsidies would not only save taxpayers money, it would also even out the market by providing a fairer playing field for competing industries. What kind of industries? Well, that leads me to my other two proposals: #2: SUPPORT NUCLEAR ENERGY Nuclear energy is often considered “dirty”, but it’s actually one of the

cleanest energy sources. As ProCon. org states, nuclear energy “produces no harmful greenhouse gases, isolates its waste from the environment, and requires less area to produce the same amount of electricity as other sources.” Aside from producing more power and less pollution, nuclear energy also creates more jobs. Not only does the average nuclear power plant employ up to 400 to 700 workers, but “for every 100 jobs created at the plant, 66 more jobs are created in the local community”, the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) reports. Meanwhile, more than 200 coal plants have shut down in America since 2010, with 40 more expected to shut down in the near future, according to the New York Times. Rather than trying to stop these plants from shutting down, why not allow them to be closed and converted into nuclear power plants that create more power and jobs? #3: DEREGULATE RENEWABLE ENERGY Renewable energy sources like solar and wind are creating more jobs than the rest of the economy. Even more jobs could be created, and the easiest way to help create them is through deregulation. Unfortunately, the GOP has done the opposite by helping pass regulations against renewable energy. A 2016 report by the Investor Responsibility Research Center Institute (IRRCi) showed that utility companies spent more than $400 million in lobbying. These lobbying efforts often create laws against solar energy practices such as “net metering”, where private solar customers sell their excess power back to the grid, and “third-party ownership”, where homeowners lease their roofs to private companies to install solar panels. Rather than protect the corporate interests of utility companies, politicans should protect the interests of consumers by repealing regulations that prevent them from buying and installing affordable solar panels. TRIBUTE TUESDAYS by James Coulter Ever wished you could attend a concert for The Beatles? The Carpenters? Elton John? You might not be able to actually see any of those famous musicians live in concert, but you can always settle for the next best thing and listen to their classic music as performed at the Tribute Tuesday Series. On the third Tuesday of every month, Theatre Winter Haven offers a blast from the past with a musical tribute to classic musicians and genres. Past concerts 10 JUNE 2019

have honored such musicians as Simon and Garfunkel, The Carpenters, The Beatles, The Bee Gees, ABBA, Billy Joel, Elton John, Jimmy Buffet, and country artists from the Grand Ole Opry. In May, the theatre hosted its musical tribute to James Taylor and the songs that helped land him into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This month’s concert on June 18th pays tribute to the Original Legends; Buddy, Roy and Elvis, and next month will pay tribute to The Eagles on July 16th. This beloved series has mostly been hosted at the Chain of

Lakes Complex in Winter Haven, but future events are planned to be hosted at the Ritz Theater, explained Tony Gallegos, Business Director of Theatre Winter Haven. “We offer a variety of [musical genres and styles], from the music of the 50s to the Rock n’ Roll [of] today, [and the] disco [of] the 70s,” he said. “There are already concerts happening at the Theatre, and we will be going over to the Ritz starting in July.” Approaching its 50th season, Theatre Winter Haven has become well known for providing entertainment to the local Winter

Haven community. Not only do they expect to continue going strong for another 50 seasons, but they expect this season to be very monumental, especially with their upcoming Tribute Tuesday Series. “Theatre Winter Haven has the mission of entertaining the people of this community,” said Dan Chesnicka, Theatre Winter Haven Director. “I love the ability to be able to entertain our community in a number of different ways. It is my goal and my hope that as we continue to evolve, both as a series here at Theatre Winter Haven, and all the things we are doing at

the Ritz, that our community will know that on any given night, Theatre Winter Haven will be presenting something that is worth going to.” The inspiration for the Tuesday Tribute Series came from Chesnicka’s predecessor, Norman Small, who had hosted several small concerts known as the Encore Series. Similar to the Tuesday Tribute Series, these concerts also paid tribute to famous musicians and genres, but did not follow a dedicated schedule. When Chesnicka came on board to take over as director, he decided to start a similar series to help fill in the time between the main theatre performances as well as likewise pay tribute to musical

What they can come to expect music that they know and love being performed by wildly talented performers.” Earlier this year, in April, the Tribute Series hosted a monthlong event with a concert on each Tuesday of the month, which proved quite popular, Chesnicka said. Other shows have mixed other art forms such as magicians, comedians, and even mixed-martial artists. Future shows plans on diversifying the music and other miscellaneous talent to provide bigger and better performances. And with new shows being planned for the Ritz, their future performances are not only expected to draw in bigger crowds, but also draw those crowds to the downtown area, Chesnicka said. “There is nothing like hearing the songs that you know and love played live,’ he said. “You can’t see James Taylor anymore in a 330 seat theater. You can’t see Elton John in a 330 seat theater. We provide an intimate experience with the music they know and love with extraordinary quality.” Tribute Tuesday is hosted on the third Tuesday of each month. Part of the appeal has been the performers bringing to life these old classics, including talent such as Johnny Wilde and the Delights of Orlando. Many times, these performers are even better than the original musicians, Chesnicka said.

“Often the musicians we have paying tribute to the musicians are even more skilled than the actual musicians were themselves,” he said. “I think the guys who have been doing Elton John and Billy Joel are probably better than Elton John and Billy Joel may well be.

Baseball, Family and Fireworks By Elizabeth Morissey This summer it’s all about baseball, family and fireworks at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland. The Lakeland Flying Tigers minor league baseball team will be playing games throughout the summer with fun activities and giveaways. “During summer, there needs to be something for people to experience,” says Zach Burek, Flying Tigers general manager. “We provide a state-of-the-art venue with world class entertainment. Kids and family are extremely important to us.” May 31 kicked off law enforcement appreciation weekend with the Tigers and it started with a giveaway of 1,200 Sheriff Grady Judd bobbleheads. “We have unique ideas and we wanted to recognize a figure in the community,” says Burek. The next day was a Battle of the Badges where local police and the sheriff’s office played softball. After the game, the Tigers took the field at 6 p.m. wearing specialty jerseys. They could be purchased for $100 and proceeds went toward the foundations for the Lakeland Police Department and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. The night ended with a bang as fireworks light up the night sky. June 8 is one of their signature events – the 8th annual Pack the Park benefitting kidsPACK, a non profit dedicated to feeding disadvantaged children. Fans can join the mission of “No more hungry kids” and donate pop tarts, breakfast bars, applesauce cups and Chef Boyardee microwaveable bowls. Watch the Flying Tigers play the St. Lucie Mets, enjoy fireworks and help support a great cause. “We play baseball, but how are we impact28 JUNE 2019

ing people?” says Burek. “Hopefully we are making a difference.” The fun continues through the rest of June with $1 hot dogs, Thirsty Thursdays with half-off drinks, Sunday brunch, Bark in the Park, and June 29 is Bikers in the Outfield. This event partners with Lakeland HarleyDavidson and a portion of the proceeds benefit Southeastern Guide Dogs Inc. The ticket package includes the game, a pre-game bike parade and special parking on the outfield berm. One of the Flying Tigers summer signature events is their July 4th celebration. The game against the Dunedin Blue Jays will start at 5 p.m. and at 9 p.m. one of Polk’s largest fireworks shows will begin. “Our fireworks rival what you would see at Disney,” says Burek. Other summer events include Taco ‘Bout Hunger – a taco tasting and competition benefitting the Catholic Charities Polk County Ministries. It will feature local food and drink specials. The Flying Tigers will also be wearing unique jerseys in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20 and will help raise money for the Explorations V Children’s Museum in Lakeland. There is always free parking at the stadium and tickets range from $6 to $10 with a $1 discount for children 12 and under and senior citizens 55 and older. “Every night we try to provide added value,” Burek says. “We are creating experiences and memories. (Safe) Summer Time Fun This month marks the beginning of summer. We love the long daylight filled days perfect to enjoy many outside activities. It's also a time to work on those "project lists" around the house and yard. While at times it's too hot to stay outside, during 11 am to 2 pm, we do get to enjoy beautiful mornings and leisure afternoons that take us into long evenings. When you have daylight until 9 pm, that alone inspires us to be more active. Why just sit on the couch and waste all of your time watching TV? I walk my dogs each morning however when it stays light longer, I also take them fr a walk early evening. Win-win for me and them. At our household, we are in the process of working on the pool area. Cleaning the area, pressure washing and making sure the pool is sparkling complete with a new small fountain to enjoy. Why you ask? We love keeping the blinds open to enjoy the view during the daylight hours; enjoying the looks of our pool area is the first peek into the backyard. It's also a nice place to enjoy an adult beverage or two...just past that area, it's enjoying the lake front with all of its hustling and bustling. Full of life from the creatures that live on it, to the neighbors enjoying their paddle boards and canoes, to those fishing and waterskiing. And maybe a seaplane touch down here and there. Next, it's on to the front yard to tackle an unruly flower bed. Ugh! Time to give it a sprucing up. Mornings and late afternoons are the best times to work in the yard. It's hard to enjoy these projects when you feel like a heat stroke is coming on! Most important rule for working outside safely is sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and the proper gloves. I also keep my insulated cup handy with ice cold water. Since the kids are out of school, make it a family affair when working on these outside projects. It helps them get in touch with reality and nature plus it's always great to do activities together as a family unit. The trade off could be the promise of hosting a pool party (or backyard party with fun games) and bbq for their friends as a kick off to the summer. We work hard, we get rewarded... In addition to June kicking

off the summer, it's also the start of hurricane season which runs through November. Being prepared, especially in our area is most important as the past couple seasons have proved. This also goes with having a safe and fun summer. If we work on being prepared and safe, then it's easier to enjoy our summer. While we are working on outside projects also look for areas that could cause us problems; dead or low lying tree limbs, outside items that aren't needed that can be stored away in sheds or garages. Let's also make sure we have proper sized wood panels for windows cut and ready to go along the correct nails to secure them. Find an area in your shed or garage to store them until needed. Next it's on to our supplies. As Floridians, we should all know by now what we need to keep us and our family, including all pets, alive and well for 3-5 days if we are hit by a storm. It's time to take inventory of your household goods to see areas that are lacking and start restocking those supplies. So not to feel a crunch in your wallet, this is what I do. Each time I go to the grocery store I check out what's on BOGO (buy one get one free), add it to the shopping cart. Before you know it the pantry will be stocked up with peanut butter, crackers, canned chicken and tuna. If it's something that you like and can eat without power then grab it. I do the same with household cleaners too. Don't forget water! It's always best to keep a couple cases on hand. Don't forget batteries! Make sure that all of your flashlights are in working order. When you see a great sale on these items add it to the shopping cart. Buying items little by little, and when on sale, makes it so much easier on a family. Most families can not afford to run out and spend $300-$500 on supplies all at once in the face of an emergency. Be safe and be smart! Hannah is a copper and black female Black Mouth Cur and German Shepherd Dog mix. She is approximately 3 years old. Hannah is a sweetie she knows how to shake hands and love females especially children. She likes to sleep in bed with you. Hannah thinks she is a lap pet. Hannah is good with other dogs that are submissive to her as she likes to be the boss.

TAZ

Taz is a orange and white female Domestic Shorthair mix. She is approximately 3 years old. She has been spayed. Taz came to us from Animal Control, she was surrendered with 7 other cats from her family because they had to move and could no longer keep her. She is very loving and sweet.
