Pilot is a white and brown male Chihuahua, Short-Haired mix. He is approximately 9 months old. Pilot can be shy until he gets to know you. He will bark to protect his owner around new people or dogs. Pilot is scared of cats, and is selective on who he likes dog wise. He loves to cuddle and to play fetch!

Chicken Chronicles Continue…

“The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of human beings.” ― Masanobu Fukuoka, The One-Straw Revolution

With Britain pulling out of the EU, Trump’s name on the ballot in November and the rise of deadly violence around the world, my mind should be on far more important matters than the daily happenings in my chicken coop. Call it first world problems or a shallow personality defect, but my first thought in the morning is how are the chickens? Our backyard coop is still in the middle of a broody breakdown. At least one broody chicken has been in the coop since before the Christmas holidays creating a heighten sense of urban homesteader distress. Researchers have determined that chickens do not have emotions; however, I beg to differ as we have witnessed mood swings of epic poultry proportion. I have almost reached the point of needing a barnyard intervention. After battling with a broody buster cage, cold water baths and a handful of other farmer tricks, we finally succumbed to bad parenting and gave in to our hen’s desire to become mommies. Thankfully our pint-sized chicken expert from across the street was able to provide fertilized eggs from his flock. Our first chick experiment was with our golden hen, Emily. She is a pretty tough bird…pardon the pun…with a very dominant personality. Keith and I carefully placed four eggs underneath her and marked the hatch date on the calendar in big red letters. What we learned from this experiment is chickens are actually wonderful mothers and sacrifice great comfort while sitting on eggs. The hen will roll the eggs back and forth underneath her to ensure even warmth and will sit in the nesting box only getting up for a few minutes each day for food and water. Curiously, hens also pluck their breast feathers to provide the optimal moist condition for protecting

their eggs. Throughout those 21 days of incubation, we waited breathlessly for the eggs to hatch. It is a huge responsibility bringing life to the coop and we felt the weight of that burden as we carefully lifted Emily each evening to check for signs. Finally, Keith discovered the eggs had “pipped” meaning the chicks were alive and pecking their way to freedom. By the time I arrived home, we had three speckled chicks safely tucked under their surrogate mother. Baby chicks are a little awkward with skinny legs sticking out from their over plump bodies, like real-life weeble-wobbles, but they are amazing resilient and quickly begin venturing out into the big world. Emily was an amazingly patient mother showing her brood how to drink and eat and after a few days how to forage about the yard for tasty bugs and grubs. Scarlett was our second mommy and she bravely endured her nesting cycle like a champ. I was the first to see that her eggs had “pipped” and later that afternoon she introduced us to four very active (and nearly impossible to catch) yellow chicks. We learned that chicks stay close to their mothers and can quickly crawl underneath her when danger is near. They also cheep and peep incessantly and will fly high into trees creating quite the morning emergency. We have become quite the business partner with our neighbor, who by the way is only in middle school. He provides us with fertilized eggs and plenty of farming wisdom and we return the favor with healthy chicks that become part of his farming empire. I fully expect to see him as a competitor to Perdue one day! Emily, Scarlett and Anna are currently sitting on eggs and our backyard flock continues to delight as we witness the cycle of life from our kitchen window. TID BITS TRACEY’S

By Tracey Greene

Shark Week 2016

Each June “Shark Week” attacks the Discovery Channel, grabs hold of you and doesn’t let go until the 7 days are through. It heats up the TV viewing just in time for the waters around Florida to heat up yikes! This year, is no exception, and I was able to watch the full extent of this nightmarish freak show. A lot of times, I miss out on this awesomely terrifying week of programming, due to my DVR being too full of other cherished non-sense shows. Yes, I have what’s called “space” issues. I take control of all recording of shows and fill up the upstairs and downstairs boxes. But wait! I upgraded last year, so I have MORE space and the ability to record MORE shows at once...so, I am able to enjoy Shark Week 2016 with ease...except for the possible gruesome visions a 24 foot Mega-Great White Shark can drill into my psyche. At times, I didn’t know whether I felt the the need to jump into the ocean, swim to the depths and stroke their beastly shark noses trying to induce a “tonic” state or never ever step toe in the ocean again. I mean, it is their home, their territory - we are just visitors in their world and really bad ones at that. Humans as a species are so selfish and self centered. We must remember, they have millions of years on us. We as humans should really learn to be better guests when entering into their homes. I mean, stop flouncing around dressing and acting like their favorite meal, seals and sea lions, and wondering why they from time-to-time want to take a little taste of us to see if we are, indeed, a flavor they like. Which they don’t by the way. The only problem is that when they check us out with that little “taste”, and then spit us out, the bite usually nicks arteries, destroy muscle or takes off a foot, hand etc...and we would have to worry about bleeding to death. Humans will only become a desired - or forced edible, to sharks if we continue to destroy and over fish their homes. I don’t like liver or sea urchin but if that’s the only thing I had to eat...just sayin’. The Discovery Channel does a great job during

8 JULY 2016

Shark Week to really educate humans about co-existing with the sea and its creatures. I really love to learn about the species. There are so many different species of sharks. Did you know that sharks eat other sharks? Not all, but some, like Hammerheads, love to eat Black Tip sharks - in the shallow waters. So cool, but yet cannibalistic? The shows also make you think twice about complaining about our 9 month pregnancy terms when the Great White Shark is pregnant for up to 18 months. Say what? And, those little toothy buggers come out at 4-5 ft long ready and able to fend for themselves. I, myself, have a respect for these creatures and promise not to come looking for you if you do the same for me. Years ago, I did a little scuba diving and underneath the dark ocean blanket is the most beautiful world that seductively sucks you into it. It’s peaceful, calm and breathtaking. However, I have never come across anything more than topical fish and lobster. The one and only time I heard some in the group say the word shark while I was in the water, it could have just as well been screams of terror, but it wasn’t. It was simply the word and that’s all I needed. It went something like this: in water, ears heard the word “shark”, brain acknowledge the word “shark”, body flung itself out of the water like a superhuman and attached itself to the side of the boat so that no parts were still in the said water where the “shark” was...truth is that the shark was small and non-threatening but as a good guest in some one’s home - I knew when it was time to get the hell out! Peace, love and respect to all. This is a big world, let’s finally learn how to live together in harmony above and below the sea. Stop the over fishing of our oceans and the cruel use of the miles-long nets that do so much more harm than good by the trapping and killing of hundreds of thousands of ocean creatures each year. Let’s all take a bite out of this crime!

MUSIC BAND PROFILE

BACKSTAGE PASS

BY ANASTASIA J. ZIVIC

W

ith only a few shows under their belt, Polk County locals Spirit and the Cosmic Heart have become a current underground music favorite, and for good reason. This unique 6-piece with airy male/female vocals, ethereal melodies and breezy, atmospheric sound take a fresh look at dream pop and conjure an effervescent experience for the listener with their original music. The band is made up of players Josh Miller on lead vocal/guitar, Kerri Griffin, lead vocal/percussion, Dallas Smith, keyboard/trumpet, Daniel Miller, bass, Ian Lopez, drums, and the mononymous Dewey, featured on lead guitar. The Winter Haven-based sextet has released a satisfying self-recorded, two-song demo on SoundCloud, produced with and mixed by internationally lauded local Drum and Bass/DNB DJ/Producer, Mike Richards (Random Movement). In not looking for traditional successes, with artistry being the main focus and the art pop niche a warm and welcome home, I predict with some time the evolution of Spirit and the Cosmic Heart and their ethereal sound is opening a door to a regional coming of this notcompletely-able-to-be-defined subculture of indie, alternative and pop. Their take and sound will inspire a new generation of Central Florida regionites to dig in to this school of combining art, aesthetic 10 JULY 2016

JM: We’ve been in lots of bands together, done some things that we’re prouder of. We grew up together. Danny’s my brother. Our souls have been connected from the start. Even to the point where we drove identical cars through high school, running around Winter Haven with identical Subaru station wagons [Laughs]. T&T MAG: The same one, or two? His and his?

and music, much like the scenes that have flourished worldwide since the Warhol/ Velvet Underground era in New York City in the 1960s. Josh, Kerri and Danny sat down with us recently to share a snippet of their story with us. T&T MAG: You’re a music teacher, aren’t you? Tell me a little bit about your history, this band is kind of your brain child, isn’t it, Josh? JOSH MILLER: Yes, I taught orchestra and guitar at Jewett School of the Arts for 8 years, but am now moving to Winter Haven High School, and there I’ll also be teaching what is going to be called Rock Academy. It’s made up of kids who

want to play in bands and write songs, and they’re going to be able to take a class where they can learn how to do these things. I’m really excited about it! Dallas also teaches music at Jewett. T&T MAG: How long have you been playing music? JM: Since middle school, 6th grade, 7th grade. That’s when a few of us started playing together. I met Ian, our drummer, in Denison Middle School Jazz Band and became friends with Danny not long after that. T&T MAG: That’s a great way to relate to your students, having been in their place. Did you start a band at that time?

DANNY MILLER: Yeah, Josh’s and mine, two different cars [Laughs]. T&T MAG: And then at some point later, far away from middle school you met Kerri. KERRI GRIFFIN: Yes, we met and we decided to just hang out at some point and just jam. Initially it wasn’t supposed to really be anything. There was nothing formal, no thought of playing out, just a thing that we did. T&T MAG: So, before Kerri, had you guys ever worked with a female vocal? What did she change? JM: My kind of default became to sing even though I’m not much of a singer. And then the idea was one of that we

WWW.TODAYANDTONIGHT.COM • FIND US ON FACEBOOK

wanted to pair vocals. When she started coming out to the warehouse practices it kind of made it feel to everybody, who were just friends growing up together, who met at the warehouse on the same night of the week, it was a little bit more of a real thing. Before we were hanging out, working on and writing songs, but then with Kerri, it all came together a bit, a fit. T&T MAG: You’re primarily an original music band. Who is writing? DM: All of it is spontaneous, we’re all writing together. KG: I think Josh is the, habitually, instinctively, the nucleus of it all, and how he is allows for everyone to just do their thing in every aspect. DM: We all make our own contributions and it becomes like children that grow, and with that contribution it becomes fully materialized over time. T&T MAG: Dream pop has come up when I’ve read about you guys a few times online. I’m not asking you to label, but would you say that is accurate? DM: If we’re invited to play with other dream pop bands and that is what we get referred to then that’s okay, but I don’t think we really fit in that box. KG: I think we’re still evolving, finding our sounds. There are songs that we’ve written that we don’t play out anymore. We’re still in forward motion, trying to figure out what feels right. JM: I always like to hear what other people think that our band sounds like and then go with what they say. I’ve been called a lot worse than dream pop, but it does sound kind of like Brittany Spears if you don’t know what it is. [Laughs]

we didn’t really decide what we were going to do before we did it. And then, when we look back on what we did, and hearing people like you, and other people, say that our songs remind them of The Cure, and other 80s nostalgia, I think it’s almost, maybe, a little kind of coincidence. But I think what we’re drawing from that time, from that sound, is just something very simple and pure. I think that maybe we latched to that unconsciously because the songs we write are trying to be simple and pure. It’s a good accident to have happen, and that’s how everything laid out. DM: It’s a miracle for that to have happened to the band because our influences are so broad. KG: Yes, a very broad spectrum. T&T MAG: And the people who were listening to The Cure at that time, for whom they’re not nostalgic because they were there, they were typically listening to some punk too, so is it safe to assume there is some punk influence behind the music too? JM: Yeah, and it’s kind of a funny story, the first time I ever saw a band play I went to Lakeland, Florida. I was about 12 or 13 years old. We went to The Mad Hatter and there was a punk rock show going on, with like, mowhawks and liberty spikes. The bands were playing, they were going crazy on the floor, going nuts. The bass player had blood all over his shirt, his nose was bleeding, and that was the first time I ever saw a real band play. It was so terrible, so bad but it was so awesome, and it was him. [Points to Danny] That was him. I didn’t even realize it at the time, but that was my brother up there. It was such an energy. Everyone

was feeling it. It was a good connection. A connection of music regardless of style, genre or classification. It was a feeling of everyone in that moment. They were crazy. T&T MAG: So that begs the question: what kind of feeling do you guys want to evoke? DM: Six beating hearts, bringing together what we’re all feeling everyone needs. T&T MAG: Is there a goal? JM: I’d say that the gauge of our society and culture today have a very impatient view upon not only music but art in general. It kind of feels like everything should be shoved in your face immediately and you’d better like it or not. So, I think that avoiding any kind of normal situation, for this band, would probably be the best because every normal situation for what bands seem to be doing these days is quite terrible. I think it’s almost embarrassing that people can just put themselves out there so quickly and not really think twice about what they’re trying to say or they’re trying to do. So, in a very patient sort of way I think we’ve started something, and I’m excited to be about what we’re going to do in the future, but I also want to be very careful of how we present ourselves. It’s too easy to put yourself out there, and I don’t want to be out there like that. T&T MAG: So you won’t be busting out the old auto-tune any time soon? JM: Maybe that’s the answer. T&T MAG: For some people it is! Obviously, thankfully, not for you. What you’ve said is honest and deep and I agree with you.

KG: He is protective. T&T MAG: You should be! JM: I have the sense that even the next song we haven’t written yet, is going to be so much better than the songs we wrote six months ago. I feel like in 2016 it’s easy to self-produce and advertise yourself, and self-market, to be a band who tries to play a lot of shows and have people like them, and to me that is not art at all. T&T MAG: I’ve really enjoyed your take, and thank you all for speaking with us. You have something special and people are going to take notice. Final Thoughts Too often of late are we called to instant gratification - and what is truly regurgitation in the music industry. This band, its beautiful melodies combined with the “anything goes for art” philosophy oozes an open-mindedness that will keep their listeners on the edge of their seats. How they’re starting in their here and now is just that: a beginning. I’m looking forward to the ride they’re going to take us on as they continue to gel and find new inspirations in the world around them. Catch Spirit and the Cosmic Heart with Mr. Handsome and The Shades on July 16, 2016 at Jessie’s Lounge in Winter Haven. For ticket information call Jessie’s Lounge at (863) 298-9815. Further show information can be found on the event tab on band’s Facebook page: Spirit and the Cosmic Heart. To listen to Beach Trip and World Stops Watchin’ off of their demo, visit soundcloud.com/spiritandthecosimicheart.

T&T MAG: I think it’s a beautiful term for what you do, when you have that ethereal sound that comes from you. JM: Ethereal pop. T&T MAG: Back in my day [Laughs], the music was called Post Modern, what happened before Alternative, which is different than what people would call that music now, the era of Post Modern MTV, 120 Minutes, the music that came out of punk, and that British pub rock, it gave us The Cure and Depeche Mode and New Order, then in the states REM, and the dream pop was an off-shoot of that. They all had this kind of feel to it. Are these some of the bands that inspired the sounds of what you’re doing? As I’ve thought about it, I hear some of those influences and wonder if you do, as well? JM: One of the coolest things is that SIGN UP FOR OUR NEW WEEKLY EMAIL NEWSLETTER AT WWW.TODAYANDTONIGHT.COM

BRIAN’S BRAIN

By Brian Bruchey

Sick Sonic It’s no secret, I’m a big softy when it comes to animals. Well, I eat a lot of pizza and burgers, and don’t exercise, so I’m kind of a big softy in the literal, physical way too. But for this story, let’s just concentrate on the soft spot I have for animals…not the soft spot known as my gut. I hate seeing animals suffer, and especially, my own dog. Don’t tell our turtle, goldfish, or hamster, but my feelings aren’t as strong for them as my dog. My dog, Sonic, is around fourteen years old. I say “around” because I don’t really know. We got him from the SPCA when he was two or two and a half years old. And since you can’t cut a dog in half, and count the rings to determine its age, like you can a tree, I really have no precise way of putting an age on him. Plus, it’s not like he can just tell me. If he could, this story would be waaay more interesting. When the time came this year for Sonic to get his annual vaccinations, things went bad. Not in a “He ran off with some little bitch (an actual female dog, not the derogatory form of the word), went on a crime spree, and left a trail of victims and dog poop behind him” sort of way. He had a bad reaction to his vaccines, and his health took a turn for the worse. In addition to that, he started having difficulty eating. Things did not look good, and in fact, it appeared that Sonic had reached the end. I began thinking of how life was going to be without my first son… my fuzzy son. As is the case with so many people and their pets, Sonic is a part of our family. The family member who licks himself, poops all over the place, and will dry-hump you without hesitation if you give him the opportunity. Many of you have cousins like that, so don’t judge. Fortunately, after great treatment by the vets, his body rash cleared up, his eating improved, and he was back to normal. Which, for him, his normal is acting abnormal,

so abnormal is normally normal, because he’s a goofy dog, but we love him anyway. At fourteen years of age, I know that he doesn’t have a lot of time left in him…which is depressing. But he’s had a pretty good dog life. I mean, he hasn’t had daily doggy massages, and he doesn’t eat steak for every meal, but it hasn’t been horrible. Getting neutered surely wasn’t one of his top experiences, but that was before he was a part of our family, so I don’t take the blame for that. He’s been loved. His life has been spent living inside an air-conditioned house. He’s never had fleas. And he doesn’t have to have his anal sacs sqeezed from time-to-time. If you don’t know about anal sacs, you might want to research that before you get a dog. So this story has a happy ending. For now. My doggy continues to play, and be happy. He also continues to pester me about going outside often, and then barking for me to let him back in as soon as I sit down. He continues to chuff at me when he needs more water, or whenever his dog food has sat in the bowl for too long, and he needs something fresh. He continues to poop in my back yard. He continues to chew on the fence, because there are cats on the other side who need to know that Sonic will tear them apart if he ever gets his paws on them. And he continues to dig deep holes in my back yard for whatever reason. He can keep doing that for many years. Brian “Love my son of a bitch” Bruchey QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS bruchey@gmail.com

his edition marks a significant publishing milestone as Today & Tonight Magazine’s Polk’s Beloved Bartender Reader Contest has officially become a teenager and we are celebrating lucky number 13 with a whole new class of stellar nominees. The time-honored tradition of Polk’s Beloved Bartender feature started with the very first edition of the magazine and we added the voting component a few years later. Throughout the contest’s history, the magazine has collected more than 30,000 votes from dedicated readers wanting to give back to their favorite hospitality professionals. Bartending can often be a thankless job and this contest is one of the ways we are giving back to the men and women who work hard each day to provide superior customer service in this noble profession. Our readers are amazing in their recognition of excellence and we thank you for taking the time to share your nominations. To celebrate 2016, we presented The Class of 2016 Beloved Bartenders with 13 curious questions designed to capture their unique life perspective and bubbly personalities. From circus aspirations to bowls of crickets, our nominees were great sports providing a window into their lives away from the bar. In fact, this year’s bartenders offer some great life advice. We are especially grateful for Alex’s words of wisdom to “stop crying.” All kidding aside, we are proud of each nominee and encourage you to get out and try each of their signature drinks. Finally, we want to take the time to thank our advertisers, readers and supporters for the wonderful memories and 12 YEARS of continued success. Today & Tonight Magazine is the pulse of Polk County and we are committed to providing Central Florida with the best possible local entertainment and lifestyle resource. Without much further ado…begin the drum roll, please…Today & Tonight Magazine presents the 13th Annual Polk County Beloved Bartenders Winners…

GRAPE EXPECTATIONS

5535 Cypress Gardens Blvd #150, Winter Haven www.grapeexpectationsfinewine.com • What are your three best personal attributes? Well, it’s definitely not my hair ;). I would say my work ethic, my ability to see a positive outcome, and the people who surround me. The latter might not sound like a personal attribute, but my friends and my family define me. I wouldn’t be myself without them. • What accomplishment are you most proud of and why? Everything I have done waterskiing. I moved to Florida about 5 years ago to ski for a living and it completely changed my life. The friends I have made and experiences I’ve had are unforgettable. It’s also how I met my beautiful wife-to-be, Jac. We’re getting married in October! • What is your perfect pizza? It doesn’t matter to me as long as there is a whole lot of cheese. • If you could be a cartoon character for a week, who would you be? Underdog! He is by far my favorite cartoon as a kid. That guy was a hero. • What is your favorite and least favorite word or phrase? My least favorite phrase: “I can’t”. Too many people underestimate how great they are. Have faith in yourself and give it a shot. Who cares if you fail? My most favorite: It’s not necessarily a phrase, but an attitude – “Understanding one another.” There is far too much

hate in today’s world to go through it alone. Please don’t be afraid of someone or something that is different than you. • Who would you most like to be stuck in an elevator with and why? My cousin, Timmy. He was like a brother to me and left us 5 years ago. I’d love a chance to be trapped with him and have nothing else to do but listen to his crazy stories. • If you joined the circus, what amazing act would you want to perform? The trampoline wall. It’s definitely my favorite act to watch. Then again, my life is so crazy right now -- it’s pretty darn close to a circus! • What is the weirdest thing about you? Maybe not weird, but unique. My job! I get to water ski for a living! My favorite past time growing up now earns me a paycheck. That never gets old. • If you have to choose one destination for an all paid vacation…mountains or the beach and why? That’s a tough question, but I’m going to say mountains. Even though my heart is on the water, I’m not much of a lay around on the beach kind of guy. There are more possibilities for adventure in the mountains. • What is the best compliment you have ever received? Being voted by my customers as their favorite bartender, of course! • Would you be willing to eat a bowl of live crickets for $40,000? Heck, yes I would, I’m no fool! • What’s your favorite smell in the whole world and why? I love the smell of my smoky, old ski boat. That smoky smell means… I’m out on the lake skiing, fishing, or cruising on the chain. Being on the water is my favorite

place to be. • What is the best piece of advice you’ve received? If you’re going to do something, do it right. I learned this from my parents. They never had to say it, but their guidance made me a very hard worker. If I start something, you better believe I’m going to do it to the best of my ability.

SIGNATURE DRINK: My favorite drink is a bold, earthy, Cabernet. One wine that has never gotten old for me in my 4 years at the Wine Bar is our Uppercut Napa Cabernet. I guarantee that I can find a wine that suits everybody.

• What are your three best personal attributes? I have a bubbly/sparkly personality. Hard-working -- you don’t achieve anything if you don’t work for it. And I’m super outgoing. • What accomplishment are you most proud of and why? Becoming myself again. The tragedy of losing my father defined me for awhile. • What is your perfect pizza? People think it is a weird combination, but pineapple, jalapeño and extra cheese are my favorite toppings. • If you could be a cartoon character for a week, who would you be? Bubbles from the Powerpuff Girls. • What is your favorite and least favorite word or phrase? My favorite phrase is “Don’t stop believing...” My least favorite phrase occurs when in you’re in a conversation and their response is “true.” • Who would you most like to be stuck in an elevator with and why? Tim McGraw ... do I need to answer why? I have been stuck in an elevator before with my sister. She was terrified because being stuck again in an elevator is one of her worst fears. When it happened to both us, she was freaking out while I couldn’t stop

laughing. • If you joined the circus, what amazing act would you want to perform? A lion tamer! • What is the weirdest thing about you? The fact that I know, I can fit in small places... like my dryer, cabinets, and boxes. • If you have to choose one destination for an all paid vacation…mountains or the beach and why? My choice would be a trip to the beach and preferably a trip to Hawaii. Being at the beach is relaxing... I love to listen to the waves crashing and being able to lie in the sand with a drink in my hand. • What is the best compliment you have ever received? This compliment happened when I was 16. I was at an airport and a little girl said “Look mom, it’s Ke$ha!” And, she wanted an autograph! • Would you be willing to eat a bowl of live crickets for $40,000? Yeah. I would just have to be blindfolded. • What’s your favorite smell in the whole world and why? Banana Boat Sunscreen! I just love that smell. • What is the best piece of advice you’ve received? Don’t depend on anyone…except yourself.

• What are your three best personal attributes? I am compassionate and loving but also care enough to be extremely honest when someone needs to hear my advice. • What accomplishment are you most proud of and why? My daughter, she is my world. The last four years have been the best years of my life and I am looking forward to many more to come. • What is your perfect pizza? I’m “kinda” a foodie so the quality of ingredients is very important. Recently, I enjoyed a great meal from a restaurant named Blaze where you create your own pizza. My creation included white sauce and red sauce, fresh mozzarella, ricotta, goat cheese and shaved parmigiano-reggiano, prosciutto, salami, and fresh basil -- all on a crispy but not too thin crust. Yep, now I want one!! • If you could be a cartoon character for a week, who would you be? I would be a princess because who doesn’t want a Prince Charming and to live in a royal castle. It would be nice to be waited on hand and foot for a week! • What is your favorite and least favorite word or phrase? One of my favorite phrases is.... When life is in discord, praise ye lord. It’s from an Anberlin song. And one of my least favorite words would have to be along the lines of “bae,” “twerk” and the other nonsense words used so much these days. • Who would you most like to be stuck in an elevator with and why? My mom. Because she and I think so much alike! I know we wouldn’t get on each other’s nerves after being stuck together for a long period of time. There would be lots of laughing and we would either figure a way out or a way to get help.

• If you joined the circus, what amazing act would you want to perform? I would be a tight rope walker. They are so graceful and are really far away from the clowns on the ground. I’m not a fan of clowns! • What is the weirdest thing about you? I’m a germaphobe, so I use a lot of hand sanitizer! • If you have to choose one destination for an all paid vacation…mountains or the beach and why? Definitely, I would want a mountain vacation. Since I’m from Florida, I’ve had plenty of beach experiences. Last fall, I went to North Carolina and got to see the leaves changing and that scenery was one of the prettiest sights I have ever seen! • What is the best compliment you have ever received? That I’m an excellent mother. And according to my daughter, I’m the best mommy! There is nothing else in the world I want to be than being the best mother possible. • Would you be willing to eat a bowl of live crickets for $40,000? How big is this bowl? I think… I could figure out how to get them down for that amount of money. • What’s your favorite smell in the whole world and why? It’s between fresh cake batter in the mixing bowl and the smell of flowers in the air after it rains. My grandmother made her own cake batter and getting to lick the spatula is one of my favorite childhood memories. As for my second choice, there is just something that renews and refreshes your soul after everything is washed clean from the rain and the sweet smell of flowers and earth fill the air. • What is the best piece of advice you’ve received? Always make wise choices and do what you can to not have any regrets. Put your best into every situation. SIGNATURE DRINK: I have too many signature combinations to pick just one drink. One of my special talents is creating a one-of-a-kind recipe just by asking my customers a few quick questions! These creative combinations keep my customers coming back for more.

BRAINEXCERCISE Sudoku Puzzle STRANGE BUT TRUE BY SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was 19th-century mathematician and philosopher William Kingdon Clifford who made the following sage observation: “It is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence.” • Thanks to stories of Robin Hood, most people have heard of King Richard the Lion-Hearted. He wasn’t much of a king, though; he spent only about six months in England, and he didn’t even speak English. • If you have the great good fortune to take a cruise along the length of the Danube River -- Europe’s second-longest -you’ll hear seven languages spoken along the banks as you travel. * Just a couple of hours southwest of Indianapolis, you’ll find the town of Vincennes, Indiana, home to the Backyard Roller Coasters. This is where John Ivers, a blue-collar worker, decided he wanted to build a roller coaster in the backyard of his home off Highway 41 -- and he didn’t let his lack of an engineering background stop him. The thrilling 10-second ride was completed in 2001, and in 2006 those with less nerve got their own, tamer coaster on the same site. The coasters are open to the public, so visitors can try out either (or both) of the rides by making an appointment.

I would definitely pick Joel Osteen. He would keep me calm and take me to church. • If you joined the circus, what amazing act would

you want to perform? I would want to be the dog trainer because I love dogs so much. But I think my husband would want me to be a contortionist. I’ll explain that later. • What is the weirdest thing about you? Well, finally the secret comes out. I have a thing for light bulbs. All kinds, ones with stain glass or odd shapes. I must stop now. • If you have to choose one destination for an all paid vacation…mountains or the beach and why? Is this a trick question? Since we live in central Florida we could always go to the beach. I pick the mountain vacation. Did I win.......? • What is the best compliment you have ever received? Those Tiny Little Cup Coffee Makers Okay, I’m not going to name the brand but we all know that those itsy bitsy plastic coffee cups that you load into a machine full of water are cool for making hot drinks. However they are REALLY expensive. It’s very similar to buying a cheap printer only to find out 3 ink cartridges cost more than the machine itself. Three cases of little coffee cups cost the same as the machine. Don’t get me wrong, I love luxury. But somehow making one itsy bitsy cup of coffee at time doesn’t make sense financially or tastefully, so it must be more. It must be marketing! Yes, marketing it is. Do you like that enormous lever that you slam down with the heel of your hand make you feel powerful? The first time I used one I thought it felt a little overbuilt. It’s kind of like that big lever on a slot machine. People prefer that to a little button. It’s a primitive brain thing I suppose. Slam, bam, wham, and drink! Perhaps we are trapped by our need to be unique. I support being unique in a big way. Little expensive cups just don’t make sense. Perhaps we like the exclusionary aspect. What is the pecking hierarchy in your home if you make one cup at a time? Perhaps it is who is the grouchiest without their caffeine or the more extroverted. Someone gets to go first and someone else has to say, “That’s okay, I’ll wait.” These coffee mak-

ers may be another indicator of how we have a vote-you-off-theisland mindset. Caffeine is a legal drug. In moderate doses it helps the heart and sharpens the mind. But how sharp is your mind if you can only get one itsy bitsy cup at a time? I can set my very lovely coffee maker to be up before I am and have a whole pot waiting for the whole family. It is shared, not withheld. It fills the whole house with a pleasant aroma because it is a big pot of coffee, not one little itsy bitsy plastic cup aroma. This is why coffee houses make so much money. They are filled with the aroma of coffee and conversation of humans drinking coffee together. Yes, they get a unique cup of coffee they can add to themselves, but they are sharing. Single doesn’t seem so sad. No one is getting excluded. They don’t make one little tiny cup at a time. Sometimes more is more. JULY 2016

SARA MICHAELS’

PORCH PRAY FOR ORLANDO

Every month we get an email from our publisher Chris Douglas letting us know when our due date is for our article. I received my email and just tapped my fingers on my desk. Who do I write about? I’ve written about the new music that has been released that I like already. Kenny Chesney’s new album isn’t available to listen to yet. I had nothing. Tracey Greene from Today & Tonight Magazine is on my show every Tuesday to report the latest social “happenings” around town. Our conversation went something like this: Sara: Tracey, I have nothing to write about. Tracey: Well…what’s been on your mind? Sara: The Pulse shooting… Tracey: Write about that. Hmm ok. It seems easier said than done. I have a lot of close ties to the gay community. Not all the victims were gay, but most were. They were out dancing on a Saturday night in a

place they thought was a safe haven. The majority of gay people don’t feel comfortable showing affection to their partner or the spouse in public because of the public scrutiny… fear of physical danger. Gay clubs, for some, is the ONE place where some people can actually feel safe, feel they can be themselves…free to dance, to laugh, to just be…that safety was stripped from them on June 12th. Some reading this may say “oh that’s not the society we live in, that’s just one act of a madman.” I would have to disagree. The hate is real. I have had a few of my friends actually beaten just because they were gay. Sadly, I had a friend murdered in 2007…stabbed 19 times and left for dead on the side of the road because he was gay. When that happened, I made a promise to him (Ryan Skipper), and his parents… that I would help be the voice that his murderers silenced…and I have. I have seen the best out of our society in the last few weeks. The staff that tended to the victims at Orlando Regional returned to work

the next day to a standing ovation. A homeless man kept the candles burning at a memorial in Orlando, making sure that if they blew out… he was there to re-light them. An Illinois man drove over 1200 miles with 49 homemade crosses, one for each victim, to place at the memorial. Blood donors came out and stood in the scorching sun for HOURS at a time to help. Monetary donations have been pouring in from all over the world! To quote the Huffington Post: “We heard Americans singing outside of the White House. We saw rainbow flags flying above Seattle’s Space Needle and iconic landmarks lit up from coast to coast, all to show Orlando that we weren’t alone. Tens of thousands gathered in London, chanting, “Orlando, we have your back.” We witnessed candles alight in honor of our victims in front of The Coliseum in Rome. We saw the Eiffel tower lit up in the colors of the rainbow. So many of our victims are Hispanic, and we felt the love and strength of Latin America. Every day, we continue to watch unique and powerful displays of support from Germany, Sweden, India, Chile, Brazil, and on and on.” The one that touched my heart the most is a man and his changed heart. Utah’s Republican Lieutenant Governor Spencer Cox gave a speech at a vigil held to honor the Orlando victims. He said “I grew up in a small town and went to a small rural high school. There were some kids in my class that were different. Sometimes I wasn’t kind to them. I didn’t know it at the time, but I know now that they were gay. I will forever regret not treating them with the kindness, dignity and respect — the love — that they deserved. For that, I sincerely and humbly apologize. Over the intervening years, my heart has changed, it has changed because of you. It has changed because I have gotten to know many of you. You have been patient with me. You helped me learn the right letters of the alphabet in the right order even though you keep adding new ones

(referring to the GLBTQ acronym). You have been kind to me.” Lt. Gov. Cox showed so much bravery & character in that short paragraph, as he humbly apologized with love. The change starts with one person…from one, there’s two, then three…and so on. A voice for the over 50 injured…and the hundreds that witnessed this horror first hand. I will try my very best to be the voice for the GLBTQ & PFLAG community. I refuse to believe that one person can silence all of us. We will not be silenced…keep dancing… love and light to you all.
