TID BITS TRACEY’S
By Tracey Greene
#IceToiletsCars As an American, when traveling abroad, you immediately start to notice the differences between countries. Luckily, my first big trip, I hopped between two: England and Italy. I touched down into Heathrow Airport (London) after flying through the night on an eight-hour flight. Prest-o chang-o it’s now morning! England is 5 hours ahead. This is a helpful way to fly to get yourself acclimated to another time zone as quickly as possible. Now the fun begins! Because you are no longer on American soil, it’s customs time…everyone has to go through customs when entering/exiting between countries. It usually takes an hour to get through the line of herded people – most tired and cranky (crying babies, you get the picture). Note to all, keep your passport ready along with our declaration form. The agents most appreciate it if you are ready when it’s your turn… My family sent a very nice luxury car service to pick me up from the airport and drove me the two hours to the military base they are stationed at. This was much appreciated, very roomy and comfortable, after being cramped for so many hours on my flight over. The original goal was to rest on my ride over to the base, but then I started to notice one of the big differences I mentioned earlier (between countries) – the driving. The cars on the road. Yes, I knew they drove on the other side of the road. However, it’s a little hectic, a little fast and a little un-nerving. Roundabouts – the way they control traffic flow. And the motorcycles and mopeds drive in-between cars and the car lanes. And they are allowed! Even encouraged to do so! So, as I was telling my driver that was a no-no in the U.S., he explained that it helped keep the flow moving with the motorcycles and mopeds. Apparently, they have more strenuous testing to acquire a license. Finally, the rest my eyes needed overcame the urge to intently watch the traffic we were in…Prest-o chang-o again and we arrived at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, the base where my family is stationed, and on to their house. I felt refreshed after my little nap and was ready for the day. I was immediately greeted by my giddy 8 and 11-year-old nieces, along with my mom who is having a 5-week adventure with my brother and his family this summer. Since I arrived at my destination, one would think it was time to unwind and get comfy for the day. Not! This was just the start of the family adventure. My first couple of days outside of the U.S. were such a whirl-wind I didn’t have time to feel “jet-lagged”. I haven’t mentioned yet that while I just arrived in England, my family and I are actually about to head to Italy for ten days. My brother rushes home from work
to pick me up for almost three hours’ worth of errands; get my credentials from security, go to the bank to exchange all of our money from U.S. to euros, etc – by the way, that’s another thing: pounds are for England and euros are for Italy. To make it simpler for myself, I only dealt with exchanging my currency to euros. Other than that, I used my credit card and let the bank figure out the exchange rate for me. Food was next on my list. Tracey needs food! It’s been too long in my day to this point, but I must keep going, so I also needed CAFFIENE! My brother, who was very impressed at my energy level with the usual “jet-lag” thing, had more errands to run for the family since getting ready for our trip so he took me to their little mart for my caffeine – I chose an orange Red Bull which I prefer to drink in a cup over ice. He chuckled at this, I was puzzled by this. Until it became clear a few moments later when he took me to get food…Are you excited to know what first food I experienced when I got to England? It was Subway. Big letdown… for me, too. Especially since it’s not my first choice for food when in America. Now comes the reason that my brother chuckled about the cup of ice for my Red Bull. While at Subway, I bought the combo meal just so I could get a cup for ice. Ummm, looking for the ice machine. Looking, looking. Finally, my brother points to a small black box. It was the smallest ice machine I had ever seen in my life. Now he explained, “good luck with finding ice. They don’t use a lot of it over here” …say what! Europeans don’t use a lot of ice, well Americans sure do. Ugh! I even packed my Big Super Insulated Cup (SIC, like a Yeti) on my trip because I drink a lot of water. I keep it packed with ice and water. Simple pleasures taken for granted. Snap out of it, I’m in England! Yay!! Rush back to the house, sister-in-law gets home from work and then the whole family starts packing for ten days in Italy. Hmm, this means for me that I have to unpack and then re-pack because space is more limited on our flights to Italy and my mom and I have to share a suitcase. Are you getting a theme yet? Rush, rush, rush. For dinner, the family just ate whatever was available in the house because we were trying to “eat down” the food since going on vacation. After finishing packing, I think I may have gone to bed at midnight after my first VERY full day. Who even knows how many hours I had been up by this point, but I made it through, no “jet-lag” for me and hardly any sleep either…back up by 5 am since the family had to get out the door by 7 am sharp to head to the airport for our flight to Naples, Italy. Rush, rush, rush. Yay! I’m in England or is it Italy
Tracey with her nieces Aubrey and Lexi in England. now. A family of six traveling together for the next ten days on an adventure…toilets, oh yeah, I forget to mention them, I am not a fan of the European toilets. They are, let’s just say a little messy, shaped a little differently, many do not have traditional seats like our standard American toilets either. My brother said it took a while for them to get used to the toilets, but they have two years on me and I only have two weeks.
This is the start of my European family vacation, sounds like a crazy movie, haha! It was an adventure as only a family traveling together for almost two weeks can understand. The ups, the downs, the highs and the lows, but it’s family. La famiglia! It’s making memories and spending time together. Those are some of the best adventures in the world. Lakeland Beer and Bacon Festival
by James Coulter
Beer is good. Bacon is also good. And the only thing better is bacon and beer together. If you want the best of both worlds, if you crave the taste of salty bacon washed down with savory beer, then you’ll be sure to enjoy the Lakeland Beer and Bacon Festival. For the low price of $35, you’ll be able to visit the festival within the RP Funding Center and peruse more than 80 vendors offering cocktails and bacon products from local breweries and restaurants. Explore the many ways bacon can be prepared, from bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers and meatballs to bacon-topped donuts and bacon-encrusted barbecue macaroni and cheese. When you’re done enjoying the many bacon products, wash away the salty flavor with a cold craft beer distilled from a local brewery. With the craft beer scene growing within the city, Lakeland seemed like the ideal location to start such a beer and bacon festival, with this upcoming event being the very first within the city for Brewed Life.
Patrick Green, Brewed Life event coordinator, has visited Lakeland many times before. Having hosted similar events in other cities, he felt that it would be a great fit. “The craft beer scene is growing in Lakeland,” he said. “I want that to happen because it is a great city, and it was the perfect spot for an event like this.”

After sampling your share of beer and bacon, you’ll be able to cast your vote as to which vendor offered the best selection. The winner with the most votes will receive a $500 cash prize and be crowned the best Lakeland Home Brewer. A native Floridian, Green started his event company about eight years ago. Upon visiting a few beer festivals across the state, he was inspired to

start his own with his first festival in Sarasota. Since then, his company, Brewed Life, has expanded their reach with six events hosted in cities such as Orlando, Tampa, and Fort Myers. This event will be the very first in Lakeland. For their inaugural event, Green has invited more than 20 different local breweries from within the community, including such staples as 3 Daughters, Timber Creek, and Coppertail. Aside from local breweries, the festival will also offer diverse bacon products from local businesses and restaurants. One such vendor will be Stanford Jerky, a company that sells quality beef jerky prepared from London Broil without any artificial flavors—no nitrates, preservatives, sodium phosphate, just quality jerky. Frank Price started Stanford Jerky ten years ago with his partner, who sell quality beef jerky at events such as the Bacon Festival. Key to their success, aside from quality ingredients, has been their affordable prices and convenient promotion, as these events allow him to easily offer samples to potential customers. “When people come to the event, they can try our jerky, and if they like it, they can purchase it on site,” he said.
8 AUGUST 2018
Not only do these events allow him to promote and sell his jerky, but it also provides him the opportunity to see people enjoying themselves within such a casual setting with beer and beef. “It is a good time for people to go out and enjoy themselves as well as taste the breweries in the area,” he said. “They get to try foods in the area they would never try at a festival. It is a relaxing day for people to unwind and enjoy themselves.” For the past eight years, Green has been harnessing his experience to fine tune their events, ensuring that everything runs smoothly and that options remain diverse and plentiful. There is nothing that he loves more than seeing guests enjoy themselves at these events, and in doing so, appreciating the hard work that he and his team provides. “I always hope that I put on an event that I would attend, and if I receive a complaint, I take it to heart and make sure that it never happens again,” he said. “I take that much pride in the event.” Newcomers to the world of craft beer will be able to introduce themselves to it by sampling several homebrews from local breweries, while aficionados will be able to pair such beer with different bacon combinations. “We really want to have a great event, it is really
just about the overall enjoyment of everyone having a great time and wanting to come back for more,” he said. The Lakeland Beer and Bacon Festival will be hosted on August 25 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the RP Funding Center, located at 701 W Lime Street in Lakeland. Douglas Cook Park Grand Opening
Ray Lewis Celebrating Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction The City of Lakeland will have the Grand Opening Celebration and Ribbon Cutting for Douglas Cook Park on Saturday, August 25th. The celebration will start at 11:30 a.m. with a dedication ceremony that will feature Ray Lewis, Class of 2018 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee. Lewis among others will cut the ribbon, officially opening the park. Cook Park is located at 955 Wedgewood Estates Boulevard, Lakeland, FL 33809. Lewis was an All-American linebacker and State Champion wrestler at Kathleen High School before going to the University of Miami where he dominated at middle linebacker for three years before being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 1996. He played at Baltimore for 17 years winning two super bowls. He will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the 2018 Class. Douglas Cook donated the 18-acre parcel of land south of Carpenter’s Way to the City of Lakeland Parks & Recreation Department as part of the Lake Gibson Village Senior Living Community Project. City Manager Tony Delgado said, “Originally, Lake Gibson Village agreed to lease the sports fields that were part of the Evangel Christian School to the City of Lakeland for $1 per year. That started a dialogue that grew into something much bigger and now we are excited to open a neighborhood park with a youth sports field in Mr. Cook’s honor.” Bob Donahay, City of Lakeland Parks & Recreation Director said, “This site is a prime piece of real estate that features a multi-purpose
field with permanent lighting, walking path, basketball court, modular playground and a dog park area. The park also has a building that contains concession opportunities and restrooms, so we can host youth sports leagues.” He added, “In fact we have youth football playing the day we open the park.” “This is a win-win and the City of Lakeland is extremely grateful that we have partners like Lake Gibson Village and the Cook Family that care about the well-being of the community, enough to donate park land valued at $2.25 million,” said Delgado. “This park is a much-needed facility the surrounding neighborhood will enjoy and the sports fields will allow us to address the immediate needs of youth sports programs.” There are a number of activities taking place over the weekend celebrating Lewis being named in the Pro Football Hall of Fame including a Celebrity Golf Tournament at Cleveland Heights Golf Course with proceeds benefitting multiple scholarship funds. The tournament is August 24th with on-site registration beginning at 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. shotgun start. Celebrity guests include Ed Reed, Gary Sheffield, Warren Sapp, Cecil Fielder and more. Those interested in playing contact Clinton Glover at 863/838-4031 or cglover51@ aol.com. Kathleen High School will also have a dedication and billboard unveiling honoring Ray Lewis at 2 p.m. on Saturday August 25th in the Kathleen High School gym. The public is encouraged to attend.
BRIAN’S BRAIN
By Brian Bruchey
The Move A couple of months ago, I wrote about the purchase of our new house, and the subsequent task of moving. If you recall that article, I think I made it abundantly clear that I did not look forward to moving. I would lie in bed at night with the optimism of maybe dying in my sleep so I wouldn’t have to take part in the move. The dread I had for the move actually made me hate the new house. I didn’t want to go. In hindsight, I’d have to say it wasn’t worth my early demise. But admittedly, my wife did most of the work. Heck, her mother, one of our new neighbors, and one of my wife’s co-workers did more of the actual moving than I did. So for me, it wasn’t as bad as I feared. The days that we had planned on moving, I ended up getting calledout for my job. Normally, I would rather wrestle a rabid bear in a tub of hot sauce while wearing underwear made of meat than to get called-out. But moving? I think it’s obvious that I’d rather get called-out than move my personal property. I also have to say that we were very fortunate with how the transition from one home to another went. We rented one of those mobile storage pods, which the storage pod company placed in our driveway. This enabled us to move a lot of our stuff into the pod at a pace that we were happy with. Well, a pace that my wife was happy with. My pace would have been over the course of three years. Her pace was over a month. While the stuffing o’ the pod was taking place, we put our current house on the market. My wife’s fear was that our house wouldn’t sell quickly enough, and we’d end up paying two mortgages in a month. My fear was that it would sell too soon, and we’d have to get an apartment to rent while we moved. In one of the rarest occasions in

our twenty-year marriage, I won out on the debate over when to put our house on the market. This was huge for me. I actually won a decision over my wife. Maybe the whole “dying in my sleep” thing was a good idea---if I died now, not only would I not have to move, I’d go out on top, with a win over my wife. Well, I’m sitting here typing this, so you know I survived. When I felt the time was right, we put our house on the market. Our Realtor asked us how much we wanted for our house, and my wife and I disagreed on the total. My number was about $6,000 less than what she thought we should ask. Amazingly, I won again. Two wins in a row for me! It was a streak! And not the kind of streak where you run around with no clothes on. However, I was tempted. Within the first week, we got two offers, for pretty much what we were asking. And then our neighbors sold their house, for more than ours. Then I started to realize, my wife was right. We should have asked for more. At this point, we have all of our stuff at the new house. Now it’s just a matter of finding a place for everything. As we settle in, I am happy we made the move, and even happier that the move is complete. I absolutely love the new house, and I’m enjoying the heck out of it. I’m half-expecting the ironic twist that I’ll now die in my sleep any day now. Brian “A moving experience” Bruchey QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS bruchey@gmail.com AUGUST 2018

MOJO FEDERAL SWINE & SPIRITS Historically Good BBQ
18 AUGUST 2018
By Amy Sumerlin Photos By Cole LoCurto
“We wanted to take a ‘BBQ Joint’ up a notch,” explained Todd Ward, co-owner of the Mojo restaurant chain that opened its eighth location in Lakeland at the beginning of the year. They do that, he explained, by smoking their meats the “old-fashioned way”: “We don’t just throw our meats on and leave them,” he began. “We use a rod-iron smoker, charcoal, and wood, and it’s a 12-hour shift to man the smoker.” The result off the smoker is a selection of regional barbecue styles. “We try to take the best of the regional flavors – from North Carolina to Texas and even Kansas City – and make them available in one place,” he continued. They don’t stop there. All the sides are scratch-made, and the restaurant is made even more interesting by the fact that soda and beer aren’t the only options to wash it all down. Ward was proud to explain that the restaurant chain boasts one of Florida’s largest curated whiskey collections. Mojo’s History “Each Mojo reflects the city it resides in,” Ward remarked. The first MOJO opened in Jacksonville in 2003, the brainchild of Ward’s partner, Todd Lineberry. He chose the term “Mojo” from its connection to the Blues. He wanted his diners to feel that type of good vibe whenever they ate at this location, which was named Mojo Bar-B-Que, A Southern Blues Kitchen.

Ward and Lineberry had been good friends since the 90’s, when they both worked for the Harry’s Seafood Bar and Grille chain. It didn’t take long for Ward to decide he wanted to join his friend in this adventure and together, the duo has opened stores in Jacksonville Beach, Fleming Island, St. Augustine, and Ocala. It was in 2011, with the fourth store in Avondale – appropriately called Mojo No. 4 Urban BBQ and Whiskey Bar – when they took a first real step towards a whiskey and craft cocktail bar. LAKELAND Ward and Lineberry first became acquainted with Lakeland when Harry’s Seafood Bar and Grille opened its Munn Park location in 1998. “We were both at that Grand Opening,” Ward reminisced, with a
laugh. “We love Lakeland and we love that building,” he said, referring to its location in Lakeland’s Federal Building on Tennessee Ave. That love required patience— because it took two years of work before the team could open its doors. It took that long, he explained, because of the building’s placement on the National Registry of Historic Places. “Everything needed so many approvals!” he remembered. THE BUILDING Construction of the Federal Building was completed in 1919. The one-story Georgian Revival style building, designed by James A. Wetmore, was Lakeland’s first freestanding post office, and remained that for several decades. Later, it housed various federal offices,
including the IRS and Lawton Chiles’ office when he was a US Senator. The City of Lakeland has owned the building since 2005, when it was transferred through the Historic Surplus Property Program. The City invested over $1 million in its restoration, including the replacement of what was then a crumbling roof. The project was completed in 2015. Another $1 million-plus in upgrades was made by Broadway Real Estate Services, the Lakeland developer that obtained a 30-year lease in February 2016 and subleases to Mojo. MOJO Federal Swine & Spirits stayed true to the building’s history, and diners will love its charm – think original arches, exposed brick, an impressive chandelier, stained concrete floor, and unique artwork on the walls. EATING THERE Hubby and I chose a Sunday early afternoon to try out the place, when we could really take our time and enjoy it. The first thing we asked for was a Bloody Mary, and what they brought out was a thing of beauty, boasting a piece of bacon and a pearl onion in addition to the mandatory olive. It is obvious I enjoyed it, because I don’t remember how much I paid for it – but most items on the cocktail menu will run you $8 or $10. Next, because it’s a favorite of ours, we tried the Boom Boom Shrimp ($9.50), and it did not disappoint… but next time we want to try the Kansas City Burnt Ends (crusty outer edges of beef brisket) appetizer ($11), because we have since heard that it is the restaurant’s most popular dish – so popular that MOJO Federal Swine & Spirits usually uses about 15, 25 pound cases every week. For the main entrée, Hubby chose South Carolina’s low-country favorite, shrimp and grits ($13.50

for the lunch portion). So you know, he is pretty darn picky about his grits. A restaurant loses luster in his eyes if they aren’t just right — so I was very tickled when he said, “Wow, this is really good!” The dish was definitely beautiful with its combination of garlic cheddar grits, caramelized onions, smoked tomatoes, mushrooms, shrimp and Cajun Tasso ham. He also tried a side of Mac ‘n Cheese and despite the starch overload, was quite pleased there, too. Sticking to my assumption that Beef Brisket Done Right Is a Sign of a Good Restaurant, I gave theirs a whirl ($14), and their generous portion of brisket was a sign that MOJO Federal Swine and Spirits have perfected the art of low and slow. For whichever BBQ you choose, you will find a selection of sauces on each table, including Mojo BBQ, Sweet, spicy Chipotle (which was my choice), Carolina Vinegar, and Mustard, all made in-house. I was also happy with my chosen sides, Sweet Potato Mash and Green Beans – especially so the beans, which featured a flavor reminiscent of your grandmother’s. Think bacon. THE BAR The Bloody Mary’s were enough for us that day, but MOJO Federal Swine & Spirits’ alcohol selection will please even Cocktail Snobs among us, including vodka, bourbon, tequila, rum, gin, scotch, wine, and beer. And don’t forget the restaurant’s impressive whiskey collection, with selections from multiple continents. If that’s what interests you, you will be happy to know that each day features a 4-7 p.m. happy hour with daily drink specials. FMI: MOJO Federal Swine & Spirits, 130 S Tennessee Ave, Lakeland. Florida International Reptile Expo
S
SEPT 8th & 9th
ome people prefer dogs as pets. Others prefer cats. Still others prefer pets that are less furry and more scaly. Whether you’ve owned every reptile imaginable, or whether you’re interested in buying your very first fine scaly friend, reptile lovers are sure to love the upcoming FIRExpo. This annual reptile show will host dozens of vendors with reptiles of every shape and size, from the smallest lizard to the longest snake. Some vendors will be showcasing reptiles from fellow reptile lov-

Whether you are looking to find a reptile to get as a pet, or whether you are looking for supplies and information to better care for your own, you can look around and learn all you need from the show’s vendors and hourly seminars. “People can come to our shows and learn about that,” said Skip Peel, event coordinator. “Our hope is that if people leave with a new pet, that they are informed and that they are healthy and happy with a good experience.” Since its start in 2004, The Florida International Reptile Expo (FIRExpo) has been the go-to family-friendly event within Central Florida for reptile lovers of all ages. The event has been hosted at various locations throughout Central Florida. Since 2013, its home has been the RP Funding Center in Lakeland, conveniently positioning itself between Orlando and Tampa. Within the past 15 years, these pets have become more mainstream and are now widely

Especially exciting for him is being able to see so many other people with a shared love of reptiles visit shows such as this and come away with an overall grand experience of having seen such exotic animals themselves. “I feel ultimately they love the animals,” he said. “Often you see people who love these animals so much...you will see them leave with what they have, and it is their passion for these kinds of animals.” Helping provide reptiles for the event is vendor and sponsor, Family Reptiles, a Lakeland reptile store that has been attending

Veterinarian of the Month When Loren Nations graduated from Winter Haven High School in 1981 his dreams of becoming an influential veterinarian in a big city would follow many paths. After graduating from UF with his veterinary degree in 1991 he completed a medical and surgical internship at the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan, NY considered the Johns Hopkins of veterinary medicine. Instead of remaining in New York City he returned home to practice “big city” medicine with his mentor Dr. John Maxwell. Dr. Nations’ desire to help animals and commitment to practice at the highest level led to specialty board certification in canine and feline practice, one of only 425 ABVP diplomats in the country and 27 in the state. With this expertise, the practice has flourished into a seven doctor 24 hour emergency and critical care hospital, specialty referral center, and general practice. Dr. Nations has devoted his life to creating a center that will improve our pet’s lives for years to come. The completion of a state-of-the-art 10,000 square foot veterinary center is only the beginning of the medical advancements Dr. Nations hopes to bring to Central Florida. “My life revolves around my family and animals. They are one and the same, that is who I am and why I am so passionate about being a veterinarian.”

BRAINEXCERCISE Sudoku Puzzle STRANGE BUT TRUE BY SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was American astronomer, astrophysicist and author Carl Sagan who made the following sage observation: “The fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.” • It’s not clear why lawmakers in the state of Alabama once thought it necessary to pass a law forbidding the operation of a vehicle while wearing a blindfold. • Though coffee has been around for about 700 years, instant coffee wasn’t invented until 1906. By George Washington. Of course not that George Washington. The man who made coffee more convenient -and less palatable -- was from Belgium. • There seems to be quite a rivalry between the towns of Rosehill, North Carolina, and Wilmington, Delaware. Both locales claim to be the home of the world’s largest frying pan, with a diameter of 10 feet. This begs some questions, of course: How many eggs are being fried at once to require such a large piece of cookware? And what sort of stove is required to heat such a mammoth pan? • If you’re like the average American, you’ll eat about 35,000 cookies in your lifetime. • Those who study such things say that 70 percent of southern Nevada’s water use goes through the sprinklers for golf courses and lawns in Las Vegas.

Over 500 Creatures
Including Albino Alligators, Pythons and MORE From Page 30 and supporting FIRExpo since 2012. The store was started by Scott Wisneski and his wife back in 2007. Since then, their collection has grown to 500 specimens, including rare creatures as albino alligators and African bull pythons. Aside from supporting a great local event, Wisneski enjoys being able to help educate the public about reptiles by showing off his own and even allowing visitors to touch them. “Everyone likes going to the zoo, but all people get to do is stand and look at the animals,” he said. “Imagine going to the zoo and being able to touch everything that you see…so you get to have different experiences and learn different things.” Reptile lovers will be able to see a variety of different exotic animals, learn more about them, and even have the opportunity to touch and even hold them. Those who are new to the reptilian animal kingdom will be able to sate their curiosity,
especially if they are interested in potentially getting their own pet. Anyone who is interested in buying their own reptile are advised to attend events such as this and learn as much as they possibly can before making their own decisions. Above all, potential reptile owners should always ask questions to see what type of reptile would be suit them and their needs. The last thing they would want is to buy something big as an iguana that demands a big responsibility for them, Peel advised. “If somebody is reluctant about reptiles and they are not sure, or if there is a family member who wants a reptile or are not sure, this is a great way to come out and see the animals, talk to some of the people who own them...and learn,” he said. The Florida International Reptile Expo (FIRE) will be hosted on September 8 and 9 at the RP Funding Center, located at 701 West Lime Street in Lakeland.
