FUZZY'S TACOS A Fun Vibe & "Craveable" Food
By Amy Sumerlin Photos by Chris Douglas For someone who likes to eat – like me – there’s this one stretch of South Florida Ave, right off the Polk Parkway, that always grabs my attention… You know the area – Jimmy Johns, First Watch, Mission BBQ… they all call to me. And now there’s a big red pepper combined with a funny sounding name that has joined in the chorus. MOTHER KNOWS BEST Brothers Ian and Adam Lieberman both careers that would make any mother proud: Adam was in commercial construction and then hospitality at a 5 Star, 5 Diamond location in Aspen; Ian was a banker who specialized in structuring deals in New York. There was only one problem: Neither brother truly loved what they were doing. One day, while Ian was talking to their mom, she said, “have you ever thought about partnering with your brother?” That bit of wisdom resulted in a great partnership: “I’m more creative; my brother is tactical. With my vision and his execution, we are a great team,” Ian explained. The two brothers consummated their partnership with their first Fuzzy’s Taco Shop in Brandon in February 2016. About a year later, the Tampa Bay natives opened their second taco shop near the University of South Florida in Tampa. Lakeland’s location, which opened in

November 2018, is their third; and their fourth location is in the Big Bend area of Riverview. THE HISTORY OF FUZZY’S Although this restaurant was new to me – evidently, I was one of just a few folks around the country who, in fact, hadn’t heard of it. Based in Fort Worth, Texas, the chain – which had its start near the TCU campus – boasts somewhere around 150 restaurants nationwide. THE LAKELAND LOCATION Expect a hip atmosphere with a fun vibe when you walk into the store, which cover 3,700 square feet of indoor space plus 600 square feet of covered patio. That patio caters to dog owners who need their taco fix but don’t want to leave their pooch behind. Bright colors and metal accents grab your attention right away – and all the TVs will come in handy during football season – and it all comes together to offer up a “I must be at the beach” feel. THE FOOD (AND THE DRINK) Unlike many of the fast-casual Mexican joints you may already be comparing this to in your head, Fuzzy’s offers a full bar. “The fact that we are both a bar and a restaurant opens us up to be perfect for a lot more occasions – lunchtime, date night, or even after little league,” explained Ian. “We have a little something for everyone.” Of course that bar offers Margaritas and a nice selection of tequila. As for the food, Fuzzy’s is more than just a simple taco stand, although the impressive menu does specialize in tacos, especially those with seafood – just as you would expect from a restaurant that features the coastal cuisine of Mexico’s Baja peninsula. But the menu just starts there, also serving up all of your favorite Mexican dishes, including nachos, burritos, and quesadillas. “All of our food is fresh, light, and filling,” he continued. “We don’t serve up meals that will make you feel like you need a nap afterward.”
even vegetarian, we have something they can eat.” I ended up choosing the Fajita Beef Burrito Bowl ($8.99) – and it was chockful of beef, pico de gallo, and its spicy chimichurri sauce gave it a nice kick. Hubby stayed with tacos and because it was indeed Taco Tuesday, they ran $1.79 – can you even get tacos at Taco Bell that cheap (they normally run $2.39 to $3.49, depending on the flavor you choose)? He was only slightly adventurous with the flavors, ordering beef, pork, and chicken – we’ll have to go back again so he can try the shrimp version. When he does, I will have to push carb-worry to the side to try the Shredded Brisket Quesadilla, which Ian told me was the menu item he craves most. “Our brisket is slow braised for 16 hours – and when you combine that with bacon and jalapeno?” he said, sounding slightly hungry as he explained it. I also want to try their breakfast sometime – perhaps on a weekend when you can get all-you-can drink mimosas! The breakfast menu is available all
day long, and includes the requisite Huevos Rancheros (for the initiated, fried eggs, tomatoes, jalapenos, onions, and salsa – plus beans and potatoes, of course -- $7.49), plus a selection of breakfast tacos and jumbo burritos (prices range from $2.19 to $5.99)
THE FUTURE
With the success of this location, the Lieberman brothers are looking to expand with additional locations in Polk. “We are looking at locations in North Lakeland and in Winter Haven.” But for now, the next time you are needing a little Baja in your life, check out their South Lakeland spot. MY VISIT Hubby and I decided to celebrate Taco Tuesday this week, and he met me there for lunch. Low-carb weirdo that I am, I was especially tickled with the number of low-carb, gluten free options that were available. “That’s one of the great things about our menu,” Ian further explained. “We have awesome food for people with dietary restrictions – from keto to gluten free to

No Kids in Cages “Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” - Matt 25:40 Children don’t belong in cages. This isn’t a controversial opinion. Or at least it shouldn’t be. It should be common sense. And yet here I am writing a column explaining why it’s wrong to cage children. Sigh. I know I can be overtly political with these columns. For the most part, I try to convey my opinions so that even people who disagree with what I have to say can understand where I’m coming from, even if they don’t wholly agree with me. But I know this particular column is going to split people right down the middle. It really shouldn’t. Children don’t belong in cages. This shouldn’t be a divisive issue. This should be something we all agree on. And yet, somehow, we don’t. Sigh. I’m going to assume you don’t agree with me on this. Let’s assume you’re someone who supports our current president, his strict immigration policies, and his goal to “Make America Great Again” by deporting every undocumented man, woman, and child. For the sake of argument, let’s pretend I agree with everything you believe about immigrants. Let’s assume that we have a “border crisis” with immigrants flooding into this country. (We don’t!) That these immigrants drain the economy by stealing jobs, lowering wages, and siphoning welfare benefits. (They don’t!) That they’re bringing drugs and crime. (They’re not!) Even if all of that were true, that still wouldn’t justify tossing children into cages. “But they don’t belong here,” I hear you say. “If their parents hadn’t come here illegally, they wouldn’t have to be detained. Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.” But that’s the thing.
Undocumented immigration isn’t a crime. At worst, it’s a civil violation like jaywalking. We don’t cage people for crossing the road the wrong way, so why do it to people who cross the border the wrong way? Also, most undocumented immigrants don’t come here by crossing the border. More than 60% of them are people who overstayed their visas, according to data from the Center for Migration Studies (CMS). Even if they were crossing the border illegally, the solution wouldn’t be to build a wall, it would be to reform our immigration process to make it easier for them to come here legally. What does it say about our current process that people would rather brave crossing the desert than come here “the right way”? Even if we did need to detain people, that still wouldn’t justify placing them in such inhumane conditions. It wouldn’t justify forcing them to sleep on concrete floors, or worse, remain standing for days on end due to lack of space. It wouldn’t justify denying them basic hygiene products like soap and toothpaste. It wouldn’t justify forcing them to drink from toilets. And it wouldn’t justify separating children from their parents, locking them in cages, and denying them basic medical care. If this were happening in North Korea, we would understand that this was bad. We would know this is something that only happens in totalitarian dictatorships. Yet it’s happening here in the “land of the free and home of the brave.” How “free” are we when children are in cages? None of this is okay. This is not normal. Children don’t belong in cages. If you don’t agree, we don’t have a difference in political opinion. We have a difference in basic morality. QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS Info@todayandtonight.com AUGUST 2019

confident in my voice; but as time progressed, I opened up and shared that talent to the public from a fairly young age.” In high school, he began expressing his musical talents by singing for the morning announcements. Often, for his class assignments, he would request to perform a song for his presentations as opposed to a standard oral report, he said. Upon enrolling in Polk Community College, he joined the band, Chasing Thrill. He started by filling in as a guitar player before eventually becoming its lead singer. He and his bandmates would tour various musical venues in other states, including the House of Blues in Orlando, and would open up for other bands on the radio. He continued on with the band until it disbanded several years later. “It did not work out the way we wanted it to, and so then I was left bandless,” he said. “I was wondering what I was going to do with my life. I have put so much in my music.” While his time with the band may have ended, his musical aspirations did not. Using the money he had saved through their songs on iTunes and other platforms, he started producing his own music, and later, his own videos to accompany it. Using the revenue from his previous songs, he purchased a 4K mirror-
less camera that he used to document his progress within his recording studio and later to produce more elaborate videos. Eventually, his skills improved to the point where he started his own videography company, Josh VanDyk Videography LLC. Aside from making his own music videos, he also uses his company to freelance films for other businesses, bands, and even municipalities such as the City of Frostproof. When it comes to music videos, some musicians put their words to images, while others put images to their words. For Josh, he always strives to have his video match the music, especially its overall theme and lyrics. When shooting for other musicians, he always appreciates coordinating with them on a plan for the video that reflects the message they’re trying to convey through their song. It’s more than just shooting a good-looking scene in a cool-looking location. The images and scenery have to match the words, he explained. “I am big about lyrics and meaning,” he said. “Because I am a musician, a lot of times, I spend a decent amount of time beforehand picking out a song that will capture the emotion of what I want to portray with the emotion that I have.”

Speed Painter Extraordinaire by James Coulter Can you paint a portrait of Elvis Presley? Jimi Hendrix? John Lennon? Can you paint it in less than five minutes? Tony Trotti can. Not only is he able to paint near-perfect portraits of such big personalities, but he can paint most of them in as little as four to five minutes and several portraits in about 90 seconds! For the past 30 years, Tony has been speed painting such portraits. Now he wants to celebrate his 30 year-long legacy by painting 30 paintings in 30 days all through the month of August. From the RP Funding Center in Lakeland to Jessie's Bar in Winter Haven and to everywhere in between in cities like Auburndale, Haines City and Lake Wales, Tony will be visiting some of the places where he has exercised his speed painting skills to celebrate 30 fast years including going back up to Jacksonville area for a few gigs. "I want to paint somewhere different every day, with 30 paintings over 30 days for 30 years," he said. "I started [my paintings] in August, so this

was the perfect time to do this." Tony received his start in speed painting 30 years ago in 1989 while attending Jacksonville University. For Greek Week, his college would host a spoof talent competition with comedy skits performed by fraternities and sororities. However, as these skits were often deemed "offensive" by some staff members, the rules for the competition were changed. Now each group would perform a simple talent act. For his own fraternity, Tony wanted to do something truly unique, something that few other people had done before. Tony had watched a few performances of speed painting by artists such as Denny Dent, who had painted a portrait of Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock. He was amazed that someone could create such elaborate artwork in a short amount of time, and he wanted to do something similar. "I thought how cool it would be to do something like that," he said. "That is how I started my painting." For his own performance, Tony dressed up in a sheet wrapped up into a diaper. When he got on
stage, he pretended to be a little child finger painting a portrait to the music of Elton John's "Candle In The Wind." Many of the students were quite puzzled by the act and did not know what to make of it. As such, many of them started booing at him and yelling for him to get off the stage. Nevertheless, Tony continued to paint. Several minutes in, the audience began to simmer down. Now most of them had become intrigued by his artwork, curious as to what he was painting. At the end of his act, he revealed his piece to the audience, showing it to be a portrait of Elton John. The audience that had previously booed him now graced him with cheers and applause. "It turned the crowd around, and when I revealed it, it received a standing ovation in the end, and so it was a highlight to turn a crowd like that," he said. "People came backstage to say it was the coolest thing they had ever seen." Tony would paint another speed-painting portrait for his senior art show. For his second art piece, he decided to paint a giant portrait of Mari-

lyn Monroe. He considered the subject ironic, as the first painting he created was set to the music of a song dedicated in her honor, he said. When his painting was displayed within the college art gallery, its very presence immediately drew the attention of patrons, as it was one of the largest and most prominent pieces there. "You walked into the gallery, and the immediate focus was my picture of Marilyn and Elton John that consumed the gallery," he said. "It was not a large gallery at all. Those two paintings really changed the way students looked to artwork over the next few years." His family owned a local entertainment newspaper, The Southeast Entertainer, for which he had previously created ad copy and page design. This business opened doors and presented opportunities for him to host similar performances within the community. Over eight or nine weekends in a row, he would frequent many local venues such as bars to perform his speed painting. Often he would serve as the opening act for many concerts and bands as they performed their sound check. One performance at the Mayport Naval Station even provided him his own side stage to create his 8x12 foot paintings of the popular group at the time Expose’ who were there performing. More than 6,000 service members had the opportunity to see his talent in action before their big concert, he said. The next four years had him traveling up and down the Florida coast hosting his performances. In one trip to the Hollywood, FL area, a talent booking agent took noticed and soon booked Trotti across the country and even in other countries. Over the past 30 years, he has painted more than 50 to 100 pictures per year, he said. When not painting portraits of celebrities in the blink of an eye, Tony has worked as an advertising graphic designer for the past 40 years (starting when he was 11), 19 of which were served at The Ledger, and the last 4 years for the Observer Media Group in Winter Garden, FL. While he has performed for big crowds, like halftimes of basketball games, Tony himself is a very shy individual and stays to himself before the performance. After his performances, however, he manages to open up, chat with patrons, and answer their questions. As for his art, he considers it a way for people to engage in music as opposed to simply listening to it, offering them a visual image that will better last in their memories. "Through the paintings, I found out that I wanted to give people who are listening to music...give them an image, [so] next time they hear the song...they will remember that painting or go through the process of me painting," he said. "So that would be the best-case scenario where I feel I can reach out to people." “If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be.” Maya Angelou Every normal person, in fact, is only normal on the average. His ego approximates to that of the psychotic in some part or other and to a greater or lesser extent. Sigmund Freud This summer has been anything but normal following my unexpected hospital stay in June and the subsequent follow-up visits to doctors. It has also been far from business as usual in the Smith chicken coop. It is after an illness that you regain an appreciation for simple things and for me it was the sensation of soft surfaces. For good reason, hospitals are equipped with plastic furniture and tile floors that can easily be disinfected and cleaned but are relentlessly cold and hard. It was the suppleness of the fabric on my living room furniture that offered the greatest comfort during that first surreal hour at home. I could not believe how nice it was to sink into a safe surrounding that was warm to the touch. The chickens have been following their own sense of bizarre normalcy. Our hens Emily and Anna have consistently displayed broody behavior for months. The best way to describe their actions is with word play… our fowl are being foul.
Broodiness occurs when hens
do not have access to a rooster
and are unable to breed. Female chickens lay approximately an
egg a day and remarkably they can choose when to produce
chicks. Flocks without a male
can become what is essentially
biologically and psychologically
confused as they sit in their nests
as if the eggs have been fertilized. No amount of coaxing or treats
has worked with our two broody girls.
Farm logic provides that the
psychology of broody hens can be interrupted with the use of
a “broody buster.” Essentially,
you separate the hen from their
nest box in a suspended cage that allows for airflow to reach their
warm underbellies. The new environment causes a physical “reset”
for the hen and within a few days the chicken returns to her normal behavior. Emily has performed the opposite and made herself
quite the cozy home in our buster cage. Unlike the sage advice provided by so many savvy chicken
keepers, our hens prefer the soli-
tary cage turning it into their own chic pied-à-terre or more appro-
priately a poultry penthouse. We have officially waved the white flag of defeat and are keeping
our fingers crossed for a return to normal.
Illnesses like chickens
require both time and patience.
Thankfully, my recovery is 100%, now it is time for the coop to recoup.

Celebrating 60 years of Serving the Winter Haven Community! By Elizabeth Morrisey Finding a family-owned, trustworthy business can be a difficult task nowadays, but for tires, brakes, tune ups and basic car maintenance Winter Haven has the perfect place to go. Cypress Tire has been in Winter Haven since 1959, enduring economic ups and downs and a devastating hurricane. They’ve been here 60 years and don’t plan on going anywhere. “Our customers have made us and allowed us to serve the community,” says Co-owner Lisa Katros Endres. “We are thankful every day.” John Katros, Lisa’s father, started the business as a tire and retread store at 2010 8th Street NW and it remains in the same location. Her grandparents also owned a drive-in called the Bluebird on the same property from 1931 to 1959. “The family has been on this corner for a long time,” she says. “At one point, there were 3 generations working at Cypress Tire—Lisa, her father, and her son, Porter. Now Lisa owns the business with her mother. John Katros passed away five years ago. “My dad built the business on good principles – be honest and treat people fairly. I feel that we all strive for this goal every day. Many people are looking for that.” Four generations of Karlos Lawlor’s family have been customers of Cypress Tire. The com28 AUGUST 2019

pany opened up two weeks after Lawlor was born. “It’s all about customer service,” he says. “John was always genuine and sincere. If he couldn’t fix it, he would refer you somewhere that could.” Lawlor says it’s a family atmosphere and the prices are fair. “They have quality products and their personnel is outstanding.” Tony Howard has been working at Cypress Tire for 54 years, starting as a floor sweeper at the age of 19. In the beginning, Cypress Tire also sold bicycles, stereos, televisions, lawn mowers and other items. As the market
changed and department stores popped up, the business focused more on automotive repairs and tires. “We changed with the times,” he explains. “John could see the future.” Howard has done a bit of everything and enjoys working with customers and employees. “Everyone was honest and fair, so working here fit my personality,” he says. “There is a lot of competition out there, but we are more customer oriented. In today’s world, it speaks volumes that we are still open.” Lisa joined the business 25 years ago when her father wanted to semi-retire. She had a

writing and marketing background so she had to learn the business. Her twin brothers, George and Wade, worked there when they were in high school and another brother, and when Katros opened a second location in Auburndale in the early ‘80’s, George moved to that location and soon took that store as his own, naming it George’s Tire. Cypress Tire has had its share of challenges, but one of the biggest was when Hurricane Irma destroyed their building in 2017. They had to remodel the building and even rented a portable office so they could stay in business. “We couldn’t have gotten through it without the patience and understanding of our customers and the group effort of our team,” “It’s the best it’s ever looked,” Howard added. Another challenge has been the Internet. “People are trying to self diagnose (what the problem is with their vehicle) instead of coming in,” Lisa says. “They are looking online and doing research but
nothing takes the place of experience, training and proper diagnostic tools.” Cypress Tire gets most of its customers through word of mouth. Marianne George moved to the area in 1993 and heard that Cypress Tire was reliable. “I always enjoy going there for oil changes, tires and general repairs. They remember details about my car and it’s a family feeling,” she says. She recalls a time when they went above and beyond to help her after hours when her car battery died. “I tell others about them all the time.” The company also stays connected to the community as a Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce member since 1959, through sponsorships with Kiwanis Club, Polk State College and the annual Central Park Art Festival to name a few. “We like to do a variety of things that focus on the Winter Haven community,” Lisa says. TID BITS TRACEY’S
By Tracey Greene
Do Dogs Go To Heaven? July has been a tough month; one of the toughest ones that I remember having for many years. At the top of the list has been the decline of my beloved dog-child, Buster. We’ve been together for so many years and I’ve known him through all ages of his life: puppyhood, adolescence, adulthood, senior, and now, geriatric. Our first meeting was at 2-weeks old, when I helped take care of he and his sisters after their mom died. In my mind, I can still see that cute little bundle of fur so shy and unsure of himself. He was the largest of 4 puppies and his sisters all ganged up on him all the time. Before I had multiple animals in the household, it was him – well, first it was the lizard I acquired from a roommate – an ornate dab, then there was my Dutch bunny that we found. Mostly likely a bunny that was released into the environment after her owners did not want to care for her anymore. And then there was my little baby bundle of fur – Buster. Sir Buster Douglas of Greeneshire. My Lhasa Apso. My “Boo-Boo Bear”. My “Baby Love”. My “Buster the Duster”. Buster has always been a great dog – stubborn and temperamental, but great. He has always been the best traveling dog and we took him on mini-trips everywhere – all the time. He’s always been in such great health – I know, due in part, to the fact that he’s always been on a good healthy diet. So, when he hit the age of 12, I noticed little changes like not being able to jump up on the bed by himself. His skin issues increased, and his heart murmur began. But the
age of 13 is when I could really see and feel the most changes in his behavior as the “grumpy old man”. The angst of being old. He actually started to put himself to bed…climbing up the stairs, going to the bed and barking until I would come up to put him on the bed. BUT, he started expecting me to stay in bed with him and 9 pm was just a little too early for me to go to bed – haha! It’s really tough seeing his rapid decline over the last 30-days. He has started declining food, so now it’s a constant battle all day to see what calories I can get into his weak body. I try to carry him up the stairs, and down the stairs as well as whenever his body seems too unstable for him to stand. Now his expiration date is really coming fast. Every night when he lays down beside me in bed, I think of this throughout the darkness to the light of day keeping a hand close to Buster to feel his breathing. Each day that he wakes up is a gift! Each time I come home, and he lifts his head off his doggy bed to greet me with his welcoming look is a gift! A gift of another day. I’m not sure if he will make his official 14th birthday – which is September 4th, but I am so grateful of all the years that we have had and all the joy that he has brought to my life. I will forever love him….so yes, I believe all dogs go to heaven. How can a creature that gives us so much not be rewarded with an afterlife? So, when his finally expiration comes here on earth, I know that one day he will take his place beside me again for eternity… QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS Info@todayandtonight.com

BRAINEXCERCISE Sudoku Puzzle STRANGE BUT TRUE BY SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was Robert Wright, journalist, scholar and author of best-selling books about science, who made the following sage observation: “Like a lawyer, the human brain wants victory, not truth; and, like a lawyer, it is sometimes more admirable for skill than virtue.” • Famously flamboyant country singer and songwriter Dolly Parton once entered a Dolly Parton look-alike contest ... and lost. • The small Asian country of Bhutan, nestled in the mountains between China and India, had no access to TV until 1999. • You’ve doubtless heard of narcolepsy, a medical condition that causes sufferers to sleep excessively -– sometimes up to 18 hours a day. You’re probably not familiar with philagrypnia, though. People with this condition -- I won’t call them “sufferers” -- require only three or four hours of sleep a day. What would you do with all that extra time? • Those who study such things say that the average woman changes her hairstyle 20 times between the ages of 18 and 24. Between the ages of 50 and 80, though, women change it only four times. • Now that summer is here in full force, you might want to keep in mind the fact that there are 1,500 known species of fleas and 9,500 known species of ants. Then again, that might be a factoid you’d rather forget.

• If you’re out in the American West, you may see the iconic saguaro cactus. It matures extremely slowly -- it might grow only 6 inches in its first 10 years of life. It’s persistent, though; the largest known specimen reached 60 feet in height.
