TRACEY’S

By Tracey Greene

Don't Be A Bad Apple Each day I head to the grocery store to pick up items on my list. Like a trained animal, I follow the same path around the store each time no matter what’s on the list or which store I’m in. It’s off to the produce section first. My eyes wander to all of the different fruits and vegetables; bright and shiny just waiting to be picked and put into the basket. The selection process begins: a little squeezing here, a little smelling there – trying to pick the perfect pieces that are not over ripened or bruised. As I’m walking the produce section I start thinking how people are a lot like fruits and vegetables. There are so many different varieties, flavors, shapes and sizes. Many people assume they don’t like certain vegetables - the looks, smells or tastes. Maybe they didn’t eat certain vegetables as a kid or their parents didn’t like them, so they obviously they must not like them or maybe they had one bad experience years prior. Or maybe they don’t like certain vegetables because they have heard others say negatives things about them before trying to decide for themselves if they like it or not. I say give the vegetable another chance, and be open-minded. Prepare it differently, add it into other dishes; try it hot, cold, cooked, raw. You’re missing out on so many wonderful food experience if you keep so close-minded. Let’s take the tomato for example. I have known many people who say they don’t like tomatoes; it’s the texture or the taste they’d say. Hog wash, I say. They haven’t tried the right variety. Did you know there are more than 3,000 varieties of heirloom/heritage tomatoes being actively cultivated in the world and more than 15,000 known? On a daily basis, we are only exposed to possibly 10 varieties at the grocery store, so how can such a blanket statement be made. Still say you don’t like tomatoes? Meet their family members: the potato, eggplant and garden peppers. Wow, so different – but simi-

lar. Kind of like people, huh… When strolling through the produce section, I’m also very careful about the fruit I pick – not too ripe or bruised. Have you ever purchased a bag of fruit and only a few days later realize it’s starting to spoil? Upon better inspection, it’s usually one culprit. The one bad apple! It only takes one piece of bad fruit or vegetable to start the rotting process for the whole bag. As it’s rotting, the fuzzy mold starts and the gasses are emitted around the others – infecting the whole bunch! You have to seek out the problem piece, throw it out and wash off the rest. If you catch it soon enough the others can be saved. With all of the unrest in the world and now, even closer to home. Think before you speak. Don’t be blindly led by others with misguided ideals. It’s so concerning when some (younger) people are interviewed about why they were a part of some of these recent rallies or riots (on either side) and give these type answers: I’m not really a supremacist, I just thought it would be fun; I just came with my friends, I wanted to be on TV, I saw on Facebook we could get paid. Wow! Don’t let the bad apple guide you down a wrong path. Bad apples are self-serving and seductive, promote hate, ignorance, incite riots and destruction. Be your own person; know your own mind and heart. You can’t erase the past. You can’t erase history. We must learn from history to move forward. Look to the past, not live in it, to create a better stronger future for everyone. Learn to love fruits and vegetables, one tomato at a time…

JUSTINO

ZOPPE 7th Generation Entertainer and Magician By Elizabeth Morrisey Justino Zoppe remembers learning magic tricks from his grandfather who bought him a magic kit when he was a child. Zoppe followed his dreams and has been producing and starring in his own magic show for 10 years. A seventh generation entertainer, his roots can be traced back to Italy. The Zoppe family is known for the Italian Circus. Zoppe’s great grandfather Fransisco owned a three-ring circus that toured throughout Europe in the 1920s. At the young age of six, Zoppe performed a juggling act on stage and as he grew older he realized he wanted a show of his own. “As a very young boy, my grandfather was the one who ignited the spark,” he says. It started with the glitz and glam of Las Vegas. He and his wife, Daniela, toured the United States and worked on cruise ships opening the show Extreme Vegas in 2007. It had all the thrills one would expect – grand illusions, acrobats, bright lights and dancers. “It was way more than a magic show,” he says. “It was a true variety show.”

But being away from friends and family for seven to 10 months at a time was difficult. They didn’t want their daughter, who is now 4 years old, growing up so far from loved ones. Although Zoppe has traveled the world, he and his wife and daughter call Auburndale their home. “I have the best of both worlds. I’m a cool guy at the theater and then I have a normal life at home. “Now instead of being away months at a time, I am only away a few weeks,” he says. “Things changed over the last 10 years. I started over.” He

began doing smaller shows and connected intimately with the audience. “I’m connecting with people on a different level,” he explains. His most recent show, Justino Magic Live, is traveling around Polk County. September 9th in Lakeland and 23rd in Auburndale. December he will be performing "The Magic of

During Justino Magic Live, which includes the use of cards, thred, money, iPhones, bottles for tricks and other props, Zoppe interacts with the audience and asks for volunteers to come up on stage throughout the show. He enjoys telling stories about his family and about life. His wife says his show comes from the heart. “We’re all so scheduled. We need to step back and see the value of time,” she stresses. “When it comes from the heart, people like it better. It’s not fake.” They also perform regularly on Disney cruise ships. “We get to spend four days on the Disney Dream and then three days at 8 SEPTEMBER 2017

home, so my daughter gets to have the best of both worlds,” he says. And Daniela Zoppe agrees. “Disney is my favorite. It’s so family oriented,” she says, adding that she enjoys being a part of the show. “I’m very grateful.” In his show, Justino Zoppe talks about the value of time. “The biggest compliment is if they say they don’t like magic, but they liked this show.” Zoppe feels like it’s about changing people’s lives. “I have a responsibility to make sure it’s an experience. “The real magic comes from the memories we make and the moments we share with family and friends.” For More information www.justinomagic.com WWW.TODAYANDTONIGHT.COM • FIND US ON FACEBOOK

The Meaning of Life In our Tuscan inspired dining room, we have a ginormous clock hanging on the wall with the motto: Live Well, Laugh Often, Love Much. The fact that our dining room is Tuscan inspired is a story all on its own. My wife suggested it to me shortly after the house was built. I clearly misunderstood what look she was going for. To her, Tuscan relates to northern Italy. Meanwhile, to me, I had this image of the Tusken Raiders from the planet Tatooine in Star Wars. I personally would have gone for a Mos Eisley Cantina look for the dining room, but Tusken Raiders? I was cool with that. Then I came home one day to find the room had been painted maroon, grape vines were all around, and all kinds of wine had been stocked. There were no Sand People, and no Banthas. This made me realize there was probably no hope to have the bedroom turned into Jabba’s lair, complete with a gold bikini for my wife. That would have been so awesome. So anyway, Live Well, Laugh Often, Love Much. It occurred to me that perhaps this phrase on this $29.99 Pier One clock is the meaning of life. I mean, it certainly sounded like a good way to go about one’s life. Or maybe the mantra “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you” is the meaning of life. It certainly seems like an admirable way of conducting oneself. For some, the meaning of life is to acquire all the wealth possible before you die. Hey, I’m all for successes in capitalism, but I don’t think it qualifies as a meaning of life. For Kim Kardashian, the meaning of life is simply, Kim Kardashian. My life though, has no need for her opinions, her celebrity, or whatever parasites she may be carrying around. Some say the meaning of life is different from person to person. Some others say that it’s Christopher Walken in a room constructing Optimus Prime out of Legos. Who really knows? When I was five, the meaning of life was getting hugs from my parents, lots

of pizza, and watching Captain Kangaroo on TV. When I was 16, the meaning of life was getting hugs from girls, lots of pizza, and rated R movies. Now that I’m nearly 47, the meaning of life is about getting hugs from my wife, son and dog (although my dog can’t wrap his arms around me, it’s more like putting his paws on my shoulder and licking my face), lots of pizza, and remembering to pee before bedtime. So, for me, it seems that the meaning of life has changed over the years...but what is the meaning of life for mankind as a whole? Why are we all on this planet? What is it we’re all supposed to do before we die? The question has been studied by some of the greatest minds throughout history, and it’s been the subject of debate and coverage in the media. So who would have guessed that the answer actually came to me out of the blue, yesterday, while I was mowing the lawn? I wasn’t even contemplating the meaning of life... it just hit me. And I thought to myself, “Wow...that makes sense...I’ve got to write that down”. But I had no pen and paper on me at the time, and the lawn was only half way done, so I decided I would write it down when I was finished. Unfortunately for me and the rest of humanity, I forgot that I have a horrible memory...and I forgot the meaning of life. Sorry. By Elizabeth Morrisey Photos By Chris Douglas Dr. Steve Wang feels in his heart that Winter Haven is in need of experienced, ethical, and caring dentists. He is committed to helping people have a healthy and beautiful smile. Dr. Wang is focused on developing relationships and building trust with his patients – something he doesn’t take lightly. “I care about the patients,” he says. “I take time to communicate with them. It’s not going to be about the most expensive and complicated

treatment; rather, what is the best treatment for them and their health that has the best longevity.” Dr. Wang and his wife, Kimberly, are opening a dental studio on Avenue K in Winter Haven this September. “KianS (pronounce key-ahn-S) Dental Studio took 21 years in the making. It’s our passion, our love and our dental studio finally coming to reality.” They want to focus on comprehensive dentistry and geriatric dental care. As the life expectancy extends longer over time, our aging seniors are facing new challenges with health issues along with dental problems. Dr. Wang has 21 years of experience in providing dental care for our seniors, age from 55 to 102. They will provide general and cosmetic dentistry, but Dr. Wang’s expertise is in implant and reconstructive dentistry. “I love the ability to help people restore their dentition and change their life,” he says. “A healthy beautiful smile can change your self esteem, career and transform your life.” Born in Taiwan, Dr. Wang didn’t speak any English when he came to the United States at the age of 13. His family settled in Plant City where he attended junior high and high school, and then graduated from the University of Florida College of Dentistry in 1996. At 26 years old, Dr. Wang had his own dental

practice in Plantation FL, and was set up on a

blind date with Kimberly Wang, a dental hygien-

ist, who two years later became his wife. She is the Director of Dental Hygiene Operation and

Clinical Faculty at Nova Southeastern University

College of Dental Medicine. Kimberly plans to

help him on the administrative side of the new

practice once she leaves the faculty position at the dental school. “I was going to be a dentist,

but then I married one,” Kimberly Wang says. They’ve been married 18 years. In 2012, Dr. Wang and his wife sold their dental practice in South Florida to step away from the administrative aspect of the practice to focus on caring for their sick parents. In 2013, Dr. Wang came to Winter Haven to help his friends operate The Dental Associates of Winter Haven. He fell in love with the small town feel, the staff, the patients and the everyday people in Winter Haven. When the practice went in a different direction, “I came to a crossroads,” he explains. “Do I go back to South Florida or stay here in Winter Haven? I decided that I can do a lot of good and finish my career here in the City of Winter Haven.” “In Polk County, there is a greater need to serve this community,” says Dr. Wang. He wants his legacy of great dentistry to be remembered in the community. “I am as passionate about being a dentist as I was 21 years ago, I want to look back and see that I have helped

a lot of people,” he says. “I want my wife to be proud of what I do. America has given me everything.” For More Information 575 Ave K S.E. • Winter Haven (863) 877-4943 www.kiansdentalstudio.com Join Us For Our Grand Opening September 11th, 5pm to 7pm Food & Raffle Prizes

BACKSTAGE PASS MUSIC BAND PROFILE

BY AMY SUMERLIN

The Barefoot Man Comes to Winter Haven Singing about coconuts and palm trees before Buffet ever had a hit “There are kids who dream of being a fireman or a pilot,” George Nowak began. “I dreamed of a Robinson Crusoe lifestyle, complete with a grass shack on the beach, and a Polynesian bride.” German-born and reared in North Carolina, that dream was a far cry from his teenage reality, but Nowak was determined, and he hoped that his musical abilities would be his ticket. WHY GRAND CAYMAN “Grand Cayman had always intrigued me,” began the man who spent his youth in libraries researching island geography while his classmates were at movies or games. Not long after high school, Nowak’s research led him to a Costa Rican airline counter, where he read a Grand Cayman pamphlet on the counter. The title of that pamphlet, “The Island Time Forgot” had him hooked, and it wasn’t long before he and his guitar landed there. 20 SEPTEMBER 2017

“It was amazing,” he remembered. “There were 15 phones on the island, and no TV.” “THE BAREFOOT MAN” IS BORN “I quickly got a job,” Nowak said, with a laugh. “It was pretty easy because I would play and take coconut rum and a hamburger for my pay.” And perhaps because he had a constant desire to put his toes in the sand, Nowak played those first gigs barefoot. The islanders found it strange – lack of shoes, to them, meant poverty. “So,” he once said, “they called me Barefoot Man, No Shoes Man, Barefoot Boy, and I ended up Barefoot or just ‘Foot.” He came to love the nickname. “The name has great commercial value. Can you imagine anyone on the island saying, ‘Let’s go see George Nowak?’” HIS MUSIC Within a couple of years, he landed a steady WWW.TODAYANDTONIGHT.COM • FIND US ON FACEBOOK

gig at the Holiday Inn Resort on the Seven Mile Beach of Grand Cayman, and he ended up staying there for 23 years. He is often compared to Jimmy Buffet, and Barefoot really enjoys Buffet’s music, but he was also quick to remind me that, “I was singing about coconuts and palm trees before Buffet ever had a hit.” Barefoot’s songs are great for a party – somewhat risqué parody, pun and double entendre put to tropically-inspired reggae and calypso, or sometimes country and pop beats. Over the years, Barefoot became a prolific songwriter – he has composed about 2,000 songs, recorded about 500 of them, and has released 20 albums. Barefoot’s fans are all over, and sometimes they’re famous. Author John Grisham is one, and he wove Barefoot’s beat into one of his most well-known novels, The Firm. It was only natural, then, that when The Firm became a movie in 1993, it would include Barefoot. Paramount Pictures asked him to write a song for a scene. That song, “Money, Money, Money” was performed and recorded by Barefoot and his band, and when it was filmed, “Tom Cruise was only 10 feet away doing his lines and Gene Hackman a mere 5 feet away dancing to our song,” Barefoot says. DREAMS COME TRUE… BUT THEY CHANGE Grand Cayman is no longer forgotten – Barefoot explained that now, the island is one of “the wealthiest developed countries in the world, per capita.” “And I have been very fortunate, because as the island grew, my career grew with it.” Today, Barefoot still performs for tourists several nights per week, usually at the Wyndham Reef Resort on the island. Additionally, due to that prolific songwriting and recording career, ““I have a prosperous record business,” he says. “I am the record company, and my wife is the accountant.” That grass shack on the beach? Yes on the beach, but it’s a wellappointed home, instead. And that lovely Polynesian bride of whom he dreamed? Lovely yes; Polynesian, no. “My wife, Regina, is Canadian,” he said with a chuckle, as he remembered meeting her when she was on holiday on the island.

“She teaches equestrian lessons.” He is also a contributing writer for several island publications, and a search on Amazon shows several books. One, Which Way to the Islands?, is a collection of island anecdotes that will have you dreaming of Piña Coladas and, of course, of being barefoot, toes in the sand. COMING TO WINTER HAVEN Barefoot is making his way to Winter Haven to support an event that will benefit Arts4Vets, a program that is a partnership between the Polk Veterans Council and the Arts Ensemble Education Foundation, based in Winter Haven. ARTS4VETS Art programs such as this are becoming popular across the nation, as they use music, visual arts, dance, drama and creative writing to help veterans suffering from traumatic brain injury, depression, anxiety, PTSD and other psychological health issues. But these programs – which often require the purchase of pottery wheels, kilns and other equipment and supplies – need monetary support to continue running. Some of this support for this Polk County program comes from the Florida Veterans Foundation and private donors. As such, fundraising is a must and Jane Waters, who oversees the nonprofit Arts Ensemble, which operates various arts programs for adults and youth and is aligned with Doors2Change, a sister agency serving the poor through home repairs, home gardening education and more, is well known for her ability to marry a great cause with an uber-fun event that attendees remember for, well, forever. MARGARITAS AND FLIP FLOPS This tropically inspired event will be held Sunday, September 24 at Tanners Lakeside from 12-6 pm, and will feature tiki hut competitions, margarita glass painting, a hottest flip flop contest, and, of course, the Barefoot Man. For more info on this event, please call 863-272- 2258. MORE CHANCES TO SEE BAREFOOT If you can’t make it to this event to see Barefoot, he’s coming back to Florida in November. Please see below for tour details: FMI: barefootman.com

Mark but this flea, and mark in this, How little that which thou deniest me is; It sucked me first, and now sucks thee, And in this flea our two bloods mingled be; — John Donne, The Flea This column has become something of a journal highlighting our backyard farming adventure with a flock of five hens. Throughout this journey, we have become those “crazy chicken people” delighted with the entertainment our girls often provide. That all changed this summer when we discovered how quickly a coop could transform from friendly and bucolic to a den of flesh eating horror. This sad saga began innocently enough as my husband and I awoke with a rash of bites on our backs and legs. We blamed mosquitos and went about our normal schedule. The bites quickly became inflamed and we started treating ourselves with heavy doses of Benadryl and anti-itch spray. As the day progressed into night, our bites were increasing and I was beginning to panic. Our first thought was bed bugs and perhaps, we had brought them home in our luggage while visiting Toronto. This train of thought led to hourly mattress checks in search of the elusive pest and an entire night of restlessness from both fear and scratching. My panic quickly escalated and I was on the verge of setting our bed on fire. Thankfully, Keith has the cooler head and he was able to talk me

down from the brink of disaster. However, he was becoming a zombie from all the antihistamine. It was not until I returned from a morning visit to the coop and discovered a tiny but swirling vortex of black dots on my upper arm that we able to pinpoint the exact cause of our infestation. Chickens, like all animals, can be plagued with mites. These nearly microscopic pests cannot live on human blood but cause irritating bites. Mites can be deadly to chickens leading to a variety of illnesses and are difficult for novices to spot. This disgusting discovery led to Keith breaking a land speed record to the feed store for advice and more importantly, insecticide. Our skin was crawling but we felt horrible for our poor girls who were beginning to show signs of sickness and a decrease in egg production. Keith, dressed like a post-apocalyptic beekeeper, set about to create a mushroom cloud of chicken-friendly insecticide inside the coop. He carefully dusted each of our girls, a feat not easily achieved as hens are difficult to catch and even more difficult to hold still. Unleashing a mighty wave of bleach inside our house, Keith was relentless in his eradication. I followed up with the emptying of several large cans of Raid spraying and respraying every single surface of our home. We washed, vacuumed, mopped and sprayed until we were certain the only living organism in our house was two-legged. We are happy to report our summer infestation is over and the whole learning lesson has led to better chicken keeping practices and a more informed backyard farm. While I did doubt my decision to raise backyard chickens a few times during the heat of scratching, our girls are back to good health and providing a daily source of entertainment. In fact, you “mite” say we are even better farmers. QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS info@todayandtonight.com SEPTEMBER 2017

BRAINEXCERCISE Sudoku Puzzle STRANGE BUT TRUE BY SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was 20th-century playwright Lorraine Hansberry who made the following sage observation: “The thing that makes you exceptional, if you are at all, is inevitably that which must also make you lonely.” • Yes, zebras run in herds. It is more interesting, though -- and just as correct -- to call such a group a dazzle of zebras or a zeal of zebras. • If you’re planning a trip to India, keep in mind that in that country, it’s considered rude to whistle in public. • One day in 1994, Duff McKagan, the original bass guitar player for hard rock band Guns N’ Roses, was bored. With little else to do, he decided to take a look at the band’s financials -- and realized he couldn’t make sense of the info. Frustrated, McKagan enrolled in a basic finance course at a community college. One thing led to another, and he ended up at Seattle University’s Albers School of Business. Now, the rock star is becoming a money manager, founding wealth-management firm Meridian Rock to help other musicians in the same boat. • If you saw two ships run into each other, you’d likely call it a collision -- and you’d be correct if both boats were moving at the time. Technically speaking, though, if one of the boats is stationary, it’s known as an allision.

JESSIE’S LOUNGE

Celebrating 15 Years of Cool – “so I thought about this from a real estate point of view: Let’s find a great building that would work and that would be a good investment, and we will go from there.” It didn’t take long for them to find a building that fit the bill, right along 3rd Street Southwest – previously home to the Third Street Saloon. After that, things happened quickly; the daughter/parent partnership purchased the building in April of 2002, and the doors opened to Jessie’s Lounge in November. Owner Jessie Skubna and Event Manager Robbie Loftus. By Amy Sumerlin Some parents, you have to admit, are cooler than others. Jessie Skubna’s are way cooler. “My parents (Mary and Steve Jensen) came to me,” Skubna remembered, “and said, ‘Do you want to go in with us on a bar?” The idea was a comfortable one for 30 SEPTEMBER 2017

her; she grew up around her grandfather’s iconic Dundee hotel/restaurant, Casa Catalina. After graduating from Winter Haven High School, she traveled around Florida a bit, always finding a job as a bartender. “I was young and having fun,” she explained. At that point, though, she was leaning toward a career in real estate

A LOCAL BAR Keep in mind this was long before Winter Haven became a bustling hub of area nightlife. Skubna hoped to create a great atmosphere for locals. “We want to be a place where everyone is comfortable,” she said. The venue definitely has the cool factor, with a massive wood bar and brick walls. Those brick walls showcase artwork done by local artists.

Above: Jim & Judy of "Jim & Judy's Big Ass Jam". Every Wednesday night everyone is welcome to come and jam at Jessie's Lounge.

“Supporting the arts is very important to us,” Skubna commented, adding that one of the tenants in their building is Side Street Studio. A full bar and a daily happy hour keep the regulars coming back, some of them daily. GREAT MUSIC In addition to supporting the visual arts, Skubna also wanted to support music – because great bars offer great music. Robbie Loftus, who has been with Jessie’s since 2003, helps in that arena. As Event Manager, Loftus is responsible for booking the acts – and has successfully landed many nationally known acts, including Naughty by Nature, Agent Orange, and more. In fact, Jessie’s Lounge fills to its 147-person capacity when Grammy Award-winning acts like hip-hop group Arrested Development hit their stage.

Let's Get "Real" Estate Shows You know the channel with all the shows where people are buying, selling and fixing up properties. Who would have ever thought there would be a channel devoted to finding the perfect nest for your family, dogs and even internationally? I would not want to proclaim on television I was becoming an ex-patriot but hey, we have free speech here. Hopefully, before the people who buy in places outside of their country of origin have checked to see if there’s freedom there. That is so much more important than an en suite bath or a master on main, don’t you think? What I think and I’m thinking you may be thinking is how in the heck are some people not blinking an eye when they are looking at ba-zillion dollar properties (in any currency I’m pretty sure ba-zillion is understood) and they’re not blinking an eye. The plots of most of these shows are all the same. Let me outline the script. Yes, it’s reality TV, but as we jaded folks know there are scripts. I’m going to compare and contrast a faux real estate script with a more realistic approach. Let’s go. Faux: A lovely narration begins about how a nice young couple is looking for a house. Real: They need to be young because unless they are trust fund babies, their children’s children’s children will be working to pay off the mortgage.
Faux: The couple gives their wish list. It’s lengthy and admirable and seems affordable for them. Real: The wish list exists but there’s always a compromise. In case you haven’t noticed entitled people do not have the word entitled in their dictionary. Affordable means they are going to be living way above their means. That means, I hope you LOVE that house because vacations may be out of reach.
Faux: when they get to prospective houses they say, “Wow!”They say it a lot. Real: When they say, “Wow!” In

real life it means. “Wow, do they really expect us to believe how expensive this is?”
Faux: When they use the words “Within our budget” it means the approximate gross national product of a small island nation. Real: “Within our budget” means hocked to the hilt and choking in debt.
Faux: Then come more “wows”. These could refer to perfect move in ready places or really nice granite or high ceilings. Real: Never say “Wow”. It’s going to cost you. In this scenario it is much like buying a car. Instead of kicking the tires, you can turn on a faucet or two and say, “It’s an option but let us think about it. The asking price may be a bit high.” Then you get inside your soundproof SUV and say “Wow! We love it. Let’s make a list of every minute detail of things wrong and see how we can offer the least.”
Faux: All moved in a few months later and everyone is happy, healthy, the place is spotless, modern, decluttered, painted and furnished by a world class designer. Real: a few months later buyer’s remorse may be gone, but the plumbers and carpenters are out fixing the hidden things that went unnoticed because of the tricks used to get the buyers to say “Wow.” Also, the kids are fighting, there are Cheerios and toys strewn about the living area that is furnished with things your family gave you. Nothing matches and the paint is in colors that have been chosen from the Ooops Bin at a home improvement store because you can’t afford to stay “within your budget” any other way. End of script. So as we live in a world where the price of real estate is unreal, all I have to say is Wow! May you all find the house of your dreams, within your budget and furnished by a designer. Anything is possible and I’ll keep watching real estate shows because it keeps us all believing in the power of “Wow!”

THE SWEET SPOT

“That nice little groove in life—and music. It’s right where we all want to end up.”

My wife thought it was over. Not our marriage of course, just fantasy football. The latter could lead to the former if I’m not careful though. We have an office league here at the station that started last season. Pride is on the line, and after all, what else do we really have? (It’s not a rhetorical question by the way. We don’t have any money; we work in radio.) So, this month begins the arduous journey to fantasy glory! May the odds be ever in your favor, and please, don’t draft a quarterback with your first pick. Enough fantasy advice, let’s talk music. Luke Combs finds the “Sweet Spot” for September. Luke wasn’t a viral sensation. He didn’t have an Internet Fan Club sharing his every post. He cut his teeth in smoky bars with a microphone that smells like beer in the tiny, mountainous, college town of Boone, North Carolina. (The very same school that Eric Church and myself attended, Appalachian State University—pronounced AppUH-latch-in. It’s a short ‘a’ sound if you are from the area. And yes, we will always politely correct you. You wouldn’t say Ill-i-NOISE instead of Illinois would you? Same thing. I just needed to clear that up, pronunciations are different regionally, now back to music). Combs voice bellows and builds, with a touch of rasp; it’s distinct in a crowded country landscape. If you like Lee Brice, Eric Church, Lynyrd Skynyrd, or Jason Aldean, you’ll enjoy Luke Combs. Modern country and Southern rock really aren’t too far apart. Combs walks that line nicely in his Billboard chart-topping debut album This One’s For You. It’s full of “accessible pedal steel”. Meaning those country elements are in the production, but they don’t necessarily dominate. It’s that steady blend of twang and rock n’ roll that made it a best seller. This is the album to listen to on a three-day weekend, a night out on the town, or when you need to cut loose and reflect with (or without) a cold one. Highlights include: “Hurricane”, which broke Combs into country radio and earned him his first number one on the airplay charts. “When It Rains It Pours”, there aren’t any more song titles with weather refer32 SEPTEMBER 2017

ences, I assure you, is a fun, tonguein-cheek twist on post-relational ‘misery’. “One Number Away” has the most pop elements to any song on the album, but I like to remind people that legends like Kenny Rogers (who made the move TO country music) and Alabama also dabbled in pop. Remember Alabama and ‘N Sync’s collaboration “God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You”? Pepperidge Farm remembers. My absolute favorite song on the album is “Lonely One”. Sung from the perspective of a bartender, he dishes out advice, and adult libations, to a freshly single patron. “Beer Can”, well you guessed it, a good ole fashioned country drinking song from his EP. Yes, it’s been done before but Combs nails it. It’s a fun tune, and he knows how hard his audience works! “Don’t Tempt Me” is somewhat of a coming of age tale, but keeps with the theme of living in the moment that’s throughout the entire album. This One’s For You is a solid release from an up and coming artist both musically and commercially. Of course, I’m going to root for the hometown guy, but if there’s one thing I know, it’s dudes with beards that sing country songs. JESSIE'S LOUNGE From page 30

“We want to be known in the music world as a place for original music,” she continued. Locals join in the music fun on Wednesdays, at “Jim & Judy’s Big Ass Jam”, a weekly event Jessie’s “inherited” from the previous Anchor Bar when it closed, about two years ago. “It’s a great time,” Loftus explained. “About 20 or 30 local artists regularly participate, and some Wednesdays you’ll see 10 people get on the stage.” DOWNTOWN THROWDOWN If it takes something physically active to get you excited, Jessie’s event, Downtown Throwdown, is for you. Skubna and her crew have held this skateboarding competition three times. Portable ramps are brought in and the streets of Winter Haven are transformed, at least for the day, into a skate park. Once some of the downtown construction is finished, another Throwdown will be planned. BUSINESS GROWTH That real estate decision 15 years ago to purchase the entire building proved to be a wise one, because it allowed for expansion. In 2015, Skubna and her parents decided it

was time to offer a smoke-free entertainment option, and opened Jensen’s Corner Bar. Jensen’s still offers the cool vibe – hardwood floors, leather couches, vintage Winter Haven photos – but for old fogies like me who can no longer take a smoky environment – it is a welcome place to hang on a Friday night. Jensen’s, too, offers entertainment – weather permitting, often on its side patio. Speaking of Jessie’s, Skubna is pleased. “I am tickled that we have been able to stay with our original vision for the bar, and make it work. We have the best customers and staff in the world.” ANNIVERSARY PARTY Fifteen years of success calls for a party, and Skubna and Loftus have been planning something big for a while. So big, in fact, it will last two days. The party will be part of the bar’s second annual “Jessie’s Live” Outdoor Music Series and will include some great acts – and probably some cake, too. The party starts Friday, September 15 at 10 PM with DJ Magic Mike. On Saturday the 16th, the party continues at 9 PM with the Dan Signor Project and the Damon Fowler Band. Happy anniversary, Jessie.
