European Adventure: The City of Pompeii and Wine Tasting Continued saga of my European family adventure takes me to Napoli (Naples), Italy. Flying into Italy was the beginning of our family vacation however, the first part was for my brother’s military softball tournament which was hosted on a Naval base. This annual tournament coincides around the Fourth of July, in the evening on Friday and Saturday, it is opened up to the surrounding community for a fair-like atmosphere with carnival rides, live music, food vendors and traditional fireworks. Before the tournament began, we took a day to explore the city of Pompeii which is in southern Italy’s Campania region near the coast of the Bay of Naples. I was very excited about this trip because I appreciate the beauty, the adventure AND the history of an area. If you do not know a lot of about the historical backstory, maybe you’ve seen the 2014 movie “Pompeii” which depicts a tragic love story that does not have a happy ending…let’s just say that Mount Vesuvius wins in the end…I had seen this part of this movie (the ending half) while at the gym a couple years ago. You quickly get the jest that it ends badly for the whole city. Pompeii was a very sophisticated and thriving port city until the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The city was buried under tons of ash and (lava) stone; 19 to 23 feet deep. This served as a protection for centuries from vandals, looters and weather. It’s now a preserved site featuring the excavated ruins of streets and houses that tourists can freely roam; after you pay the admission fee, of course. Yes, it’s now a tourist attraction but not in the Disney World sense, but they do have to
continue to maintain the preservation of the little houses, streets and many other buildings from crumbling away with time. Walking through these ruins gives a glimpse at how far we have come in the civilized world. The stone streets and little houses, the communal laundry washing areas in the center of town; the beauty and the simplicity. Everything was so small, communities lived together very closely. But it was also very grand in its beauty sitting at the feet of Mount Vesuvius and close to the bay. The ruined city was awe-inspiring yet eerie with all of the objects and people frozen in time; people huddled together in fear, people praying to their gods to be saved. As I wandered around, I could hear a tour guide telling tales of the city; about the imprints of the men, woman, children and animals left behind. In this one moment he told of a dog that’s owner had left him behind chained up like a prisoner not able to escape. Animals typically sense environmental changes and run away for protection. This dog was encased in ash contorted trying to escape its chains and the eruption to no avail. In that moment, I shed a tear for that dog and for the city of Pompeii. Part two of our touring day was a little more light-hearted. We went to Cantina Del Vesuvio, a winery, which is located on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius near the town of Trecase. The beautiful small family winery was developed in 1948 and in 1996 they went to organic production methods. This winery thrives because of the volcano. The relationship between Mount Vesuvius and this winery reminds me of the story of the Phoenix; rising from the ashes
and being reborn. Life was given, life was taken and life was given again. Amazingly, the winery does not need to water its vineyard due to the rich volcanic soil. The staff does a nice historical tour of the land and, of course, the wine and food tastings are divine. All of the adults in our group enjoyed this part most of all! (Mommy, Auntie, Grammy juice!) The tasting menu was three courses paired with the winery’s perfect organic wines. Eighteen years ago, the owner’s son decided that their small batch

production would only be sold at the winery or online, so to taste their wonderful organic products guess you’ll just have to hop a plane to Italy or take the easy way out and just order online (cantinadelvesuvio.it). The family also produces small batch olive oils from their olive groves, too. Wow, between the freshest of pastas to the organic wines to the most beautiful of views, I can truly see why people fall in love with Italy, its culture, and its people. Join me next month as my European family vacation continues…

BRIAN’S BRAIN
By Brian Bruchey
Brian's Brain on Empty My brain appears to be empty. After doing this article for something like thirteen years, my brain has finally run dry. Writing these articles all of these years has been pretty consistent for me. Most of my ideas would either come to me while showering (My best ideas happen while showering. Must be something about the smell of Old Spice), or after Publisher Chris Douglas sends me a message saying that my article is due yesterday, and I scramble my brains for a topic. The struggle to figure out what to write led to me writing one article solely about having writer’s block. Which brings me to another consistent occurrence: Me procrastinating so long that Publisher Chris Douglas has to message me, asking if I have an article for the magazine. If I’m not mistaken, each one of my articles has had some form of picture of me, most often Photoshopped in some exaggerated manner. Several articles I have also included my late dog Sonic or my son Reagan in the photo. One of the recurrences of my articles has been bothersome to me, and it seems to be happening way too often. I’ll sit down to type an article, get about two or three paragraphs into it, and then realize that I’ve typed about it before. On one occasion, I did that, scrapped what I was writing, and started writing about a new topic only to realize that I had written about that topic once before too. So back to my brain drying up. I first noticed my problem with repetitive themes in my writing about two or three years ago. It wasn’t a major problem, just annoying. Kind of like jock-itch. Then, last year, I switched positions at my main job, and I was writing more. A lot more. And I felt like all of the creativity I had was going into that writing, and leaving none of it for my articles in Today & Tonight. So I felt like I was putting forth a lame version of an article. Which is lame. Plus, I was getting those notes from Publisher Chris Douglas more often. Like every month. And at first,
SIGN UP FOR OUR NEW WEEKLY EMAIL NEWSLETTER AT WWW.TODAYANDTONIGHT.COM
when he’d send those, I would write an article and create the accompanying photo in an hour or two and send it to him. Then it turned into getting it to him the next day or two. Then there was a couple of times I would send him a rerun article from ten years ago. And then it got to the point I wouldn’t get anything turned in to him. I came to the sad conclusion that I should probably bring an end to my article in Today & Tonight Magazine. I would say it was a bittersweet decision, but none of it is sweet. Just bitter tasting. With this final article, I was able to do something I hadn’t done in a long time… decide what to write about at the beginning of the month. I would write about writing about my final article. And at the beginning of the month I decided that I would type my article early in the month, and get it turned in to Publisher Chris Douglas waaaaay early, so he wouldn’t have to send me a note asking for this month’s article. Well, that didn’t happen. I got the note from Publisher Chris Douglas an hour ago. So here I sit…typing my final article for Today & Tonight Magazine. I have greatly enjoyed writing for the magazine, and I thank every one of you who reached out with compliments over the years. — Brian Bruchey QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS bruchey@gmail.com SEPTEMBER 2018

sioner and mayor for 20 years. He encouraged her to move back to Lakeland after owning restaurants in other places such as Ferdinanda Beach and Missouri. And downtown Lakeland is where she wanted her restaurant to be. Right in her backyard is a lush botanical garden with neo-classical architecture known as Hollis Garden. It has beautiful patterned flower beds, public art and ornamental fountains. Hollis Garden was recently named one of the best places to
spend the day in Lakeland. The 1.2-acre site is within the historic district on E. Orange St. Many people take family photos there and classical music plays to soothe visitors. “It doesn’t get any better,” Reardon vsays. “I get the best view in Lakeland.” She is a huge advocate of downtown. “This is where everyone should be. Everything is close.” Garden Bistro, on the Lake Mirror side of the Magnolia Building, is open Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and for Sunday brunch 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

hen Eric Michaels, host of the Big MAX Morning Show on MAX 98.3 FM, turned 50 four years ago, his co-host, Mike Lee, gave him the greatest birthday gift ever: a comedy roast in his honor. Now Eric wants to return the favor for Mike’s 40th birthday with a comedy roast of his own, to be hosted at Lkld Live on September 22. The Comedy Roast of Mike Lee will celebrate the irreverent radio host’s 40th birthday by making him the recipient of irreverent comedy dished out by famed comedians including Devin Siebold, Jeff Jones, Alan Newcombe, and Greg “The Angry Texan” Perritt.
While Mike will be ridiculed for two straight hours, he’s eagerly looking forward to celebrating his roast with his closest friends—if not to inevitably have the chance to fire back at them. “It is kind of an honor that you get all of your close friends together and they give you a hard
time,” he said. “I am actually looking forward to that. I also get the last word. So I will be the last speaker of the night, and I will lay into every one of them and exact my revenge.” Since 2010, Mike has served as the better half of the radio host duo for the Big MAX Morning Show on MAX 98.3 FM. Prior to his current career in radio, he had spent 10 years after graduating college working the comedy circuit with a Texas production company. He later moved to Florida where he met Eric, who invited him to come on the show. The rest, they say, was history. “I wanted to be rich and famous, but then I

- From Page 19 discovered radio, so there went those dreams,” he said. “[Eric] invited me to come on the show, and I wouldn’t go away. I was like the pimple on the buttock of MAX 98.3. Now I am a permanent fixture.” Eric was initially drawn toward his co-host due to his improv comedy training, which he felt would make him a great addition on the show. Mike started off as a guest before becoming a regular working on the show free for a year. What started as a part-time gig eventually became the full-time career that he has enjoyed for the past eight years. He has since proven to be a great addition to the show. When he first joined, the show was 44th in the ratings; now, it’s within the top three in all the ratings of the local Winter Haven/ Lakeland area, Eric said. Aside from the many energy drinks that he consumes in the morning, along with the motivation to not work a “real job”, the fun Mike has at his job every single day has kept him going for the past eight years. “It is a lot of fun getting to work with all the people, and we have a lot of fun on the show,” he said. “So this has been, for me, very fulfilling in my want and need to be in the spotlight at all times possible.”
Despite claims that “video killed the radio star”, the fact that those song lyrics fail to ring true nearly 40 years after the hit song was released proves that nothing has been able to kill radio—not television, not cassette tapes or CDs, and not even podcasts or satellite radio. “When there’s a hurricane, who are you going to turn to? You’re not going to turn to a podcast. You’re going to turn to local radio to find out who has the ice, the gas, and who is open and who is not,” Eric said. “We have that
immediate connection. You do not get that with a podcast out of Seattle.”
If you’re looking for breaking local news,
As for their future, even with most people predicting the death of radio, both Mike and Eric remain optimistic that their medium will continue to afford them a prosperous living as it continues to live on and prosper. Even with the advent of podcasts and satellite radio, local radio stations such as Max 98.3 continue to flourish. In fact, 93 percent of American adults listen to the radio every week while only 87 percent watch television, according to Business Insider. That means more people listen to the radio than watch television.
along with great music and comedy, check out Eric and Mike on the Big MAX Morning Show from 6 to 10 a.m. on MAX 98.3 FM.
And if you’re really looking for great comedy,
feel free to attend the Comedy Roast of Mike Lee on Sept. 22 at 8 p.m., hosted at LKLD Live at 202 N. Massachusetts Ave in Lakeland. Tickets are $10 for row seats and $25 for VIP seats. Purchase tickets at: lkldlive.com

hen’s eggs as they are reaching the last stages of their productivity. As I was mixing the cookie dough, I could not help but notice the richness of the yolks generated a perfect golden hue in the batter. The symbolic nature that these cookies were being baked for a baby shower was not lost in this moment. The richness our hens have provided to our lives was there reflected in the bowl of my stand mixer. Robert Frost beautifully writes, “nature’s first green is gold” and the meaning of this line has been widely interpreted. Some academics believe this line symbolizes the cycle of life as in what was once green has now burnished with age. While the literature has very different analysis, I am very sure zero professors would ever agree these words should resonate with backyard chickens. These birds can make you a little crazy and spouting comparative literature in the coop is just one more symptom. This poem also served as the backbone for the book and movie The Outsiders and was the inspiration for the pivotal line whispered on his death by Johnny to his pal Pony Boy urging him “stay gold.” We will never know the exact sentiment Frost was intending but we can be certain that all good things end. The secret to understanding the cycle of the life is to focus on the good and not on the end. As for our hen Scarlett, her memories will always be golden. Classic Albums Live The Doors - La Woman L.A. Woman is the sixth studio album by the American rock band the Doors, released on April 19, 1971, on Elektra Records. It is the last to feature the group's lead singer, Jim Morrison, who died three months after the album's release. It saw the band continue to integrate elements of blues back into their music, a direction begun with their previous album, Morrison Hotel. It was also recorded without record producer Paul A. Rothchild after he fell out with the group over the perceived lack of quality of their studio performances. Subsequently, the band co-produced the album with longtime sound engineer Bruce Botnick. Classic Albums Live takes classic albums and recreates them live, on stage - note for note, cut for cut.
