Four Hours a Day, Four Days a Week September 2 was Labor Day. Did you have a good Labor Day weekend? Wouldn’t it be nice to have a three-day weekend every week, not just for Labor Day or Memorial Day? What if instead of working five days a week, we all worked four days a week? Better yet, what if we cut our eight-hour workdays in half? What if we all had fourhour workdays and four-day workweeks? Sounds like an unrealistic fantasy, right? If we all only worked four hours a day, four days a week, how would anybody get any work done? Believe it or not, that’s exactly what many people once thought about our current 40-hour workweek. More than 100 years ago, people worked long-grueling hours at their jobs, working up to 10 to 12 hours a day, six days a week. That changed in 1926 when Henry Ford instituted a five-day, 40-hour workweek for his factories. Soon other companies followed his example by shortening their work schedules. The eight-hour workday and 5-day work week eventually became the standard by law. In 1938, Congress passed the Fair Labor Standards Act, limiting the workweek to 44 hours; two years later, the Act was amended to shorten the workweek to our current 40 hours. Today, most of us could hardly imagine working longer than eight hours a day. If we could go from working 100 hours a week to only 40 hours, why not cut that time in half? Why not work four hours a day, four days a week? These aren’t untested radical ideas. In countries such as Germany, Denmark, and The Netherlands, shorter work hours and days are practically the norm, with many people only working 30 to 25 hours a week. These countries have not only seen greater productivity with fewer work hours, but overall better worker compensation. Six out of the ten countries with

the shortest work weeks are also countries with the highest annual salaries, according to a blog post by tech company Zapier. One New Zealand company has been at the forefront of promoting the four-day workweek. Perpetual Guardian, a financial services company, switched from a five-day to a four-day week last year. Since then, its 240 staff experienced a boost in productivity. According to The Guardian, the company experienced a “20% rise in productivity” and “appeared to have helped increase profits and improved staff wellbeing.” Furthermore, fewer hours did not lead to less work, as a study revealed that “there was no drop in the total amount of work done.” So how can so many people get so much done in so little time? Simple: because we don’t actually need to work more hours to get more work done. In fact, research has shown that longer hours actually lead to less work. According to Business Insider, during the average eight-hour workday, the average employee only works for about three hours— ”two hours and 53 minutes, to be more precise.” The rest of that time is wasted doing other things such as attending meetings, reading the news, browsing social media, or taking smoke and lunch breaks. This is because most people cannot concentrate on tasks for long extended periods of time, as psychologists have confirmed. The truth is we don’t need to work eight hours a day. This will especially be true in the future with the rise of automation and artificial intelligence. With most of our work eventually being taken over by machines anyway, would a business world where most people only work four hours a day, four days a week, really be that unrealistic? ne of America’s Got Talent winners will be performing at the RP Funding Center Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. Terry Fator won the talent show in 2007 and things have been a whirlwind ever since. And he’s not just a ventriloquist, but also a standup comedian, singer and impressionist. He has a permanent show in Las Vegas at The Mirage hotel and casino and also tours around the country. “I always wanted to be a Vegas entertainer and was turned down,” says Fator. “I was performing at fairs, had huge crowds and they said I should get on AGT. A lot of them emailed NBC and then they contacted me. Then I auditioned for AGT in Los Angeles. Never in a million years did I think I would win.” Fator brings to life a range of different characters, such as Winston the turtle, the cowboy Walter T. Airdale, and vocal impressions of superstars like Elvis, Elton John, Garth Brooks, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. Q: How did you become a ventriloquist and entertainer? A: I found a book at the library when I was 10 years old and it looked like fun. I had done some talent shows when I was in school in the Dallas area. Then I started doing ventriloquy, magic and balloon animals. I was charging $25 to perform at churches and birthday parties. I always wanted to stand out. The rest is history. Q: Are your shows just for children? A: It’s written to be family-friendly but the adults like the humor and the kids like the puppets. It’s fresh and funny but clean. I write jokes based on current things happening. I’m

proud of the fact that I am one of the ones to help validate it as a talent and bring it into the mainstream. My shows when I tour are all different from my Vegas show. Q: How do you come up with your different characters? A: I have new stuff and my favorites from AGT, like Winston the turtle and Walter T. Airdale the cowboy. Winston captured the heart of America and won AGT. I pick people with mass appeal, like Michael Jackson or Stevie Wonder, especially since I will also be traveling internationally. I sing myself and was lead singer in a band. But it’s way more fun using a puppet. The audience gets to be a child again. I try to bring people through a range of emotions. Q: Do you feel the art of ventriloquism is gaining in popularity? A: It’s more popular now. I am hearing from others that the puppet makers are real busy and barraged with more work. I also helped

coach Darci Lynne, the ventriloquist who won AGT in 2017. Her team called me before she went on AGT. Throughout the season I worked with her and helped her write her material and advised her the entire time. Q: What are your biggest challenges? A: I am constantly trying to up my game. I try to make each show the best I’ve ever written. On AGT, you have to always do the best you can possibly do. That is what real professionals do. That’s the secret – it takes dedication and hard work. If you have that drive, you can sustain your career. Q: What do you enjoy most about your job? A: I love the audience and I am electrified when they laugh. I am a people pleaser. It’s entertaining to hear your favorite artists through puppets. Brew Hounds Sports Lounge 10 Years Always Among Friends by James Coulter Skip Jacobs moved down from Atlanta more than 10 years ago. He was working in advertising. He wasn’t particularly happy about his job. He met a local man, Luke Thomas. He was running a lawn and landscaping business. Both started talking about what they wanted to do with their lives. Neither of them was too happy about their current jobs. Thomas mentioned how he always wanted to open a sports bar. Jacobs thought it was a good idea. The two decided to move forward with it together as partners. “We looked around the area. We felt Winter Haven was a little bit oversaturated, and there was a need in Auburndale. So we looked for a place there,” Jacobs said. They finally found a place in Auburndale and opened their bar, Brew Hounds Sports Lounge. Ten years later, they had since relocated to their current location along Havendale Boulevard, but 18 SEPTEMBER 2019

still remain within Auburndale. Everything else has remained the same since day one. For ten years, Brew Hounds has provided a convenient spot for the local community to drop by, enjoy a cold one, shoot some pool or darts, and watch the big sports game while being around the best of friends. With so many patrons having been around since the first year, the first week, even the first day, they expect to remain around for another ten years and counting. TEN YEARS AMONG FRIENDS In August, Brew Hounds celebrated “10 Years Always Among Friends” with an anniversary celebration. Most of the festivities were outdoors that day, where attendees could engage in fun activities such as Jenga and corn hole, purchase raffle tickets, and enjoy barbecue as prepared by local award-winning barbecue team, Kick Yo Butt BBQ. Owned and operated by Bracken Smith for the past 10 years. Meanwhile, indoors, the bar served as a

smoke-free location for the occasion. Patrons could expect to have a good time with drink specials, live music entertainment provided by Acoustic Dose and Almost There, and even a speed-painting demonstration by local artist, Tony Trotti. He painted a picture of Elvis Presley to the song of “Hound Dog” in less than two minutes! Proceeds from the Tony Trotti painting, along with a 50/50 raffle, went towards benefiting the Humane Society of Polk County. The Humane Society of Polk County. The local animal shelter, one of the only non-kill shelters in the county, has been supported by Brew Hounds during many of their previous events. From 1 p.m. to 1 a.m., the celebration drew in large crowds to celebrate their special occasion. Many of the patrons that day had been with the sports bar since it first opened, having been around since the first year, the first week, even the first day, Jacobs said.

Every Sunday has a full house with people gathering to watch the big game, any big game. “We draw in large crowds for these sports events,” Jacobs said. “We pick up a big turnout on Sundays for NFL...We are a sports bar, if there is something you want to see, you come there.” Other fun activities include bar trivia nights on Wednesday, several fundraisers throughout the year, especially for the Humane Society, and the bar even serves as a Lakeland Magic bar network official location. It begins with two equations. One tracks the prey population, which could be something like the number of bunnies in a forest. The second follows the predator population, which we could imagine as the number of wolves in the same forest. The important point for modelers to capture is that the two populations are tied together. The wolves eat the bunnies, and that changes the bunny population. We spent weeks devising plans to secure our birds from a myriad of potential predators including raccoons, possums, hawks, snakes, coyotes and dogs. We searched through several hundred web pages dedicated to the singular topic of coop protection in an attempt to build a fowl fortress. During the construction of our coop, we selected animal cloth that is a type of metal fencing with gridded holes much smaller than the gaps of conventional chicken wire. This decision was to outsmart any potential animal species that can wiggle in or pull

birds through the larger spaces. Animal cloth is sold in tightly wound cylinders and during the construction of our coop; we quickly learned how frustrating this material could be after several cuts and bruises from the sharp metal. Despite the most complex planning, chickens are always subjectable to predators. We watched hopelessly as hawks preyed upon some our spring chicks turning our backyard into their personal nugget dispenser. The very nature of the predator prey model shows that this relationship is essential to all ecosystems. In fact, scientists have a mathematical differential equation model that predicts these interactions known as the Lotka-Volterra Model. According to this equation, “species compete, evolve and disperse simply for the purpose of seeking resources to sustain their struggle for their very existence.” In simpler terms, predators and prey need each other. While this mathematical equation may explain, what an entire generation has come to know through the lyrics from The Lion King, “the circle of life” was not as comforting in the discovery that we lost our hen Anna to a predator during a recent vacation. Our automatic coop door stopped functioning and an animal gained access. There is a huge lesson in this loss. Life is one big circle and despite your best efforts, nature is an indomitable predator. to NOV 10 – A Colored Image of the Sun. Presented by Polk Museum of Art. A solo exhibition by artist, Kelly Sturhahn. Sturhahn’s work explores notions of the sublime in nature from a contemporary viewpoint, simultaneously considering experience, perception and transformation. Favoring process and experimentation, her practice combines the unconventional with the traditional, incorporating a range of tactile materials to create paintings on cut fabric, ink drawings, and large-scale installations comprised of textiles, such as hand-sewn sequins and painted lace. Drawing on nature’s intricate, ever-changing phenomena, these works translate sensory experience, and often reinterpret nature abstractly as shapes, patterns, color, light, and movement. It’s (Probably) Not What You Think By Amy Sumerlin My hubby had quite a serve when he played tennis in college, I’ve heard. “I used my arm as a sling shot,“ he’s told me. That sling shot resulted in many wins in tennis, but it also gave him a sore shoulder that literally lasted decades. The only relief he would get was from massages—but even that was temporary—leaving us on a permanent search for something better. WHAT IS CBD?

Until recently, I only had a fuzzy misconception about CBD was—I knew it had something to do with marijuana, but that’s it – and I lumped it all together with THC. It was just weed. And therefore illegal – unless you had a medical marijuana card… or so I thought. Turns out, THC and CBD are two of over 100 chemical compounds, cannabinoids, that can be found in the cannabis/marijuana plant. THC gets you high, gives you the munchies – and is also said to have several healing properties. CBD, on the other hand, is not psychoactive – no high. Research is finding that this compound also has several healing properties -- which makes CBD an appealing option for people like me who are looking for relief from pain and other symptoms without the mind-altering effects of marijuana or certain pharmaceutical drugs. CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant, then diluting it with a carrier oil like coconut or hemp seed oil. IS IT LEGAL?

The short answer is yes – but that’s new, and the situation remains confusing. Federally, CBD with 0.3 or less THC has been legal since the 2018 Farm Bill – but that didn’t mean it 28 SEPTEMBER 2019

was legal in all 50 states. And I wouldn’t try to take it on a plane just yet. In Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation in June that legalized state-licensed hemp farming and sales in Florida. This new law will increase CBD availability and regulation. In the meantime, before regulations kick in – make sure you know and trust the sources. ‘The last thing you want is junk product,” explained Marilyn Lacey, owner of HomeRemeCBDy in Winter Haven. WHAT CAN IT DO?

Research is showing that CBD can be used to ease a variety of symptoms, from pain reduction to anxiety relief. They are also hopeful it can help with Crohn’s Disease, glaucoma, schizophrenia symptoms, and even work on skin conditions, from rosacea to acne. The strongest evidence of CBD’s effectiveness, though, is in relation to epilepsy. Last year, the FDA has already approved Epidiolex, a medication used to treat LennoxGastaut and Dravet syndromes, two rare and severe forms of epilepsy. It was the agency’s first approval of a cannabis-derived drug. SUCCESS STORIES

As you may have guessed, hubby is a success story. One day this past March, his shoulder was particularly bad. We’d been hearing some good things about CBD and decided to go check it out. We walked inside Lacey’s HomeRemeCBDy store and told the lady who was working that day our story. She handed us a sample of 1,000 mg salve to try, which we did, right there. Before we even had a chance to apply it and then set the tin down, he said, “I already feel that.” And just like that, we became believers. Pain gone.

Better, we use it on everything from headaches to stuffy sinuses—it does well, in our opinion, for any pain related to inflammation. The $100 price tag seems pricey at first – but it lasts us two or three months. Lacey, too, was a success story before she ever got in the business. The Winter Haven resident, who comes from the Corporate World – she spent 15 years in Accounting and 15 years in Human Resources – but had a side venture creating all-natural bath and body products. “I had a lot of issues with aches and pains,” she remembered. “And one day three years ago, I was talking on the phone to my son about them.” “Mom, you really ought to try CBD,” he said. When she found out it was a derivative of cannabis, she said, “I’m out. “Mom, it’s 2016. Do your homework.” And so, homework she did – and after more than two solid years of research and testing on herself, she was ready to enter the business. She opened HomeRemeCBDy in January 2019. “I really want to educate people”, she continued. “They need to know what it can do, where it is grown, and how it is extracted.” And without a lot of true regulation at this point, all of that is even more important. Reputable growers and sellers ”self-regulate” and have third party labs test their product for quality. “Anywhere you buy CBD should be able to provide you with a Clean Certificate of Analysis,” Lacey stated. She also explained that organic product is very important to her: “The plant is quite absorbent—farmers even use it for soil remediation… but what that means is that whatever the plant absorbs, including fertilizers, is in your product.” To ensure continued quality, Lacey is quite involved – “from soil to oil”, she said with a laugh.

She is particularly proud of a couple success stories from her customers: One gave CBD oil to her mother, who was suffering from dementia. According to the customer, after taking the oil for just one month, her memory skills and ability to recognize people showed marked improvement. Another regular customer, a cancer patient, swears by the CBD oil to lessen the discomfort after chemo. Lacey offers a variety of CBD products, from a facial (I swear by the oil, $29.99) line to bath products to lip balms to salves (what we use), lotions, gels—and then of course candies, gummies, coffee, honey, lollipops – and you can flavor your own full spectrum oil at her Flavor Bar. Largely the same items human use it for – anxiety (think thunderstorms or stress), seizures, skin and coat issues, and arthritis. Moran explained that

many pet owners give it to healthy dogs “like a vitamin”, for preventive care. “It just does wonders,” Moran said, when asked about any of their success stories. She said she has seen Senior dogs return to acting like puppies after just taking the oil for just a short while. One of her customers, April Meechan, gives CBD oil to two of her dogs. One, Ozzy, had a knee that would repeatedly pop out of its socket. Just seven weeks into treatment with CBD,” he’s a different dog,” she says. Moran offers both CBD-infused treats and oils, in dosages up to 500 milligrams, and the prices range from $19.99 to $107.99. Over The Rainbow Bridge At approximately 10:15 am, on August 22, 2019 Buster crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge just shy of 14 years on this earth. His 14th birthday was coming up on September 4th. The Rainbow Bridge welcomes you; no more pain, no more suffering just to be your beautiful healthy happy self. I loved Buster with all of my heart and will miss my “dogchild” terribly but his little body finally gave out and he could not remain here anymore. Thank you so much for being a part of my life for so long. I feel very blessed to have been chosen to take care of you and spend so many years of my life together with you. Until we meet again... Last month I wrote about Buster, asking the question “Do Dogs Go To Heaven?” A friend of mine read this and emailed me: No, they go to the Rainbow Bridge…he, being another HUGE animal lover, reminded me that it was the quality of life we have with our beloved pets, not the quantity.
