TRACEY’S

By Tracey Greene

The Kindness of Irma September 2017 is a month that won’t soon be forgotten – definitely another one for the books! A time when a hurricane named Irma came barreling across the Atlantic right towards Florida. A four-hundredmile category 5 hurricane with a hundred-mile eye and winds of 185 mph – is this a movie? A storm being this wide ALL of Florida would feel the effects with the state being 500 miles long and only 160 miles wide. All we could do is watch the news, prepare and wait. At times, the spaghetti plots had it staying more east, then it moved more west and the scariest was when the plots showed it coming straight up the center. I don’t even want to think of what would have been if that path would have come to fruition… With modern technology, we were given over to 2 weeks to prepare for this certain disaster. In year’s past, Floridians, like many, were not quick on the draw for preparations and sometimes even a little blasé when it came to taking a storm seriously. It had been so many years since our state felt the fury of a hurricane, but Harvey hitting and then stalling over Texas in mid-August snapped the fear of Mother Nature back into the fore-front of everyone’s minds. This helped our state get more prepared than I ever remember. Yes, it was scary and frustrating when the gas pumps were out. Yes, it was scary when the stores could not keep water or certain foods on the shelves. But, the governor, the attorney general, oil companies, the trucking companies, the grocers - all worked over time to take care of the people of Florida before Irma hit (and going forward) and then the electric companies, linemen and first responders took care of us during and after. It makes me so proud of how the people of Florida weathered Irma. And this is where the kindness of Irma begins, the Friday and Saturday before the hurricane people were preparing to weather the storm. Neighbors helping neighbors secure the grounds outside of their homes. Friends and family members keeping in touch for where each will be during the actual event – plans were

made and discussed with each other “if things go really bad” …a true feeling of community, caring and love. All scared of what was coming but all knowing we must move forward together. Nothing in the world mattered; no politics, no negative news stories – we were all just people hoping and praying that each survived – that our state would survive. Sunday, September 10 was an eerie day, the streets were pretty quiet and the sky was grey. Only a few restaurants and gas stations braved being open for as long as possible this day – but each was packed with people. Were they possibly trying to keep to some sort of normalcy or routine just hours before Irma blew across our state? As the day turned into night, Irma’s kindness continues as she enters Florida ever so slightly turning left slowing her winds and downgrading from a Cat 4 – then Cat 3 and finally a Cat 1 as she passed over Central Florida. No one slept. Everyone glued to the TV until power was totally lost at 11:45 pm. Then it was glued to the radio giving blow by blow as the strength of Irma made her presence known from 12 to 2 am. As she was moving away, there was a couple hours of relief and resting until safe to venture outside to see what damage was done. By 7-8 am, neighbors were already coming out of their homes to see how each did and immediately starting the clean-up of the neighborhood. We walked up and down the streets to survey the damage – many neighbors I had never met but all working, helping, consoling each other. This was the common thread heard on this day; “Are you ok?”, “How bad was your damage?” and most importantly “Do you need anything?”. The reply back (from me) was the same, ending with “I feel blessed”. You see, even though we lost thousands of dollars, someone else lost more. Even though we had damage, others lost all! Irma proved once again that we Floridians – Americans - are resilient, and to our core are good, caring, loving people. Irma, thank you for your kindness, and showing us, once again ours… QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS info@todayandtonight.com

LUCKY’S CORNER POCKET

Hole-in-the-wall pub turned state of the art with help from reality show, Bar Rescue By James Coulter Hidden within the corner of a strip mall along US Highway 27 in Davenport is a small neighborhood pub, Lucky’s Corner Pocket. This out-of-the-way establishment has been owned and operated under many names for more than 30 years, but has always suffered from less-than-satisfactory conditions. However, as of this summer, this small pub, formerly The Lucky Leprechaun Irish Saloon, was transformed through the help of the Spike reality show, Bar Rescue. What was once a hole-in-the-wall pub that suffered from black mold and clogged air vents has since become a state-of-the-art facility with an automated inventory system, an ionized air filtration system, and a draft beer system that pours a perfect glass without wasting a single drop. This transformation from an ugly duckling into a swan of a pub has been more than a blessing for owner Georgiann Browne and her manager, Cailin Goldey. “All of the stuff they have given us has helped to

serve a larger clientele in a short amount of time... [and] it actually spurred us into a more professional direction than we were before,” Goldey said. The bar itself originated in Orlando as the Lucky Leprechaun Irish Pub, but its main customer base of tourists, primarily from the United Kingdom, began to dwindle following the 2008 recession. In 2010, they opened their new Davenport location. Unfortunately, their new building came with its own problems, with black mold on the walls, 18 inches of junk trapped within the air vents, and a live wire in the circuit box. Browne could only afford to bring the establishment up to code. Even then, business proved to be dismal over the past seven years. Out of desperation, Browne and Goldey have been trying to contract Bar Rescue for the past five years, having finally gained the attention of the show earlier this summer. The transition team arrived in early May. While Browne was more than thankful for their work, the overall experience proved stressful for her and her staff. Not helping matters was that the bar was also

hosting a three-day pool tournament. With the stress of dealing with patrons, renovations, and a major event, Browne described her experience as nothing short of “post-traumatic stress disorder.” “We had everyone in the town coming in adding to the stress and chaos…so it was stressful, definitely a once in a lifetime experience that I would never volunteer for again,” Goldey said. Browne and her entire staff were kicked out during the final 36 hours of the renovations. What was revealed to them on the final day was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Among the many additions were two separate bars, a new up-to-date point-of-sale (POS) system, and a DJ booth with a sound system providing 50,000 songs. Gone were the clogged air vents and smoked-smelling atmosphere, replaced with an ionized air filtration system built within the ventilation system. Perhaps the best addition was that of a “Turbo Tap” beer draft system capable of filling glasses to the brim without overfilling them, and providing up to 90 to 95 percent yield out of every keg, according to show host, Jon Taffer. Unfortunately, their episode aired the same week as Hurricane Irma,

Lucky's Corner Pocket hosts pool leagues on the weekdays, which have even managed to reach and win nationals in Las Vegas.

during a time when most people in the immediate area had either evacuated or were left without power. As such, Browne and her staff have been unable to watch their episode, and are currently requesting Spike TV to lend them a copy as to provide a private screening for patrons.

The good news is that the renovations have garnered the pub with new and positive attention, and while a few older patrons miss the down-toearth feel of the old pub, most patrons old and new have offered nothing short of praise. “Business has definitely improved,” Browne said. “Even before the change, we had people come in and say, we did not know you were here…[so] people now know we are here.” Aside from beer, billiards, and a regular pool league, the new pub offers a small menu of bar items such as nachos and “dollar dogs”, with intentions of expanding their menu in 8 OCTOBER 2017

the future. What makes Lucky’s Corner Pocket most unique has been their staff, with some of the best staff members in the area who are veterans at their work and help offer a hospitable environment, which, along with the new renovations, is sure to attract a much larger clientele. “We also have the largest female clientele in the area thanks to our staff,” Goldey said. “We like to make sure that everyone who walks into the bar feels welcome and safe.” Lucky’s Corner Pocket is located at 43356 U.S. Highway 27 in Davenport off of I-4. The Last Article About Irma By this point, you are all probably tired of reading article and stories about Hurricane Irma. But wait… here’s one more. In fact, let’s just call this the official last article about Hurricane Irma. And given that you’re reading this well-past Irma’s visit, this is kind of like a Clearance Article…like the Clearance aisle at Walmart…only, with this article, you don’t have to worry about some loud kid throwing toys past you, or finding frozen food items on random shelves. Oh, and this article is for the low, low price of free. So don’t try getting your money back, because you’ll get nothing. So back to Irma. She was no Charley, but I still didn’t care for her. She was worse than Jeanne and Frances. I’m still glad Frances wasn’t a horrible storm, because I don’t think I could convey to my friends and family up north, just how devastating a storm named Frances was. The conversation would have been like, “Yeah, Hurricane Frances killed two million people, and there’s a giant hole in the Earth where Lake Wales use to be”, and they’d be like, “But it was named Frances… did those two million people die of laughter?” Please, if you’re name is Frances, or Francis, don’t hate me…don’t email me what a horrible human being I am. I’m married, so I hear that already. If you’re name is Frances, even you must know that the name doesn’t exactly invoke fear in people. It’s like naming a hurricane, Irma. Oh great, now I just made every Irma hate me. I’m going to write a letter to the World Meteorological Organization, suggesting more scary names in the future. Here’s my suggested list of storm names: Apollo, Bart, Cobra, Duke, Escobar, Franco, Garth, Hannibal, Ivan, Jamarcus, Kong, Luther, Mongo, Nadeen, Oscar, Prometheus, Quicksilver, Ramrod, Spike, Toro, Ulysses, Voldemort, Wolfgang, Xerxes, Yukon, and Zeus. You may be saying, “Hey, he only used one woman’s name, so why

SIGN UP FOR OUR NEW WEEKLY EMAIL NEWSLETTER AT WWW.TODAYANDTONIGHT.COM

was it Nadeen?” Well, at the risk of sounding sexist, how many women’s names strike fear in you? Now I’m not saying a woman can’t kick my keister all over the place…heck, it’s happened to me, once, or twice, or… eleven times. But women’s names just don’t make people quake in their boots. Except one name. Nadeen. Go ahead…think of the name Nadeen. Imagine what she’s like. Are you thinking…ratty bleached hair…less teeth than a 19yr old dog…dark blue ink prison tattoos? Every trailer park has a Nadeen. That’s a hurricane I don’t want to mess with. People will take scary-named storms serious. Really…who’s going to evacuate from Hurricane Percy? “Get going, son…Percy’s coming, and it’s a Category 5 storm!” No thanks…I’m going to stay home and plant some cactus in my yard. Fortunately, for most of us in Good Ol’ Poke County, USA, we didn’t get hit too hard by Irma. I mean, yeah, there was damage, but not like Harvey or Maria damage. The damage I got was one torn lanai screen and five missing shingles. Actually, three of my shingles weren’t missing, I found them on the ground, so it’s kind of like they just jumped to their death. I did lose power for five days, which is how long I lost power for after Charley too. I won’t complain about it though. Five days without power is nothing compared to what happened to people in Texas and the Caribbean. I’ll gladly take the Amish life for 5 days over what they got. FLIGHT LINE CAFE Flies Into The Winter Haven Airport

By Amy Sumerlin Photos By Chris Douglas Pilot Amir Anoshiravani has landed at Winter Haven Airport. And that is a very good thing. Even better, Anoshiravani is as passionate about food as he is about flying. Anoshiravani opened Flight Line Café at the airport just six months ago, and it is quickly becoming a hotspot for folks all over the county, given its proximity to Winter Haven, Auburndale, and Lake Alfred. HANDS ON THE CONTROLS Like any good captain, Anoshiravani doesn’t take his hands off the controls – meaning if you visit the restaurant, you will meet him. If he doesn’t greet you at the door, he’ll stop by the table and chat. My very first visit to his restaurant was on an evening near closing time. “Are you a pilot?,” I asked him, in between bites. “Oh yes,” he said, with obvious pride. In fact, he has 20 years’ experience in aviation, all of which began in Polk County: He did his private license instruction in Lakeland and later, was an Instructor at Winter Haven. As his career progressed, he flew for commercial airlines, including Qatar and Northwest Airlink, and was also a flight simulator instructor and FAA Examiner. “Eventually, though,” he later explained, “I decided that if I was going

Flight Line Grilled Caesar Salad, Grilled Romaine and chicken topped with diced bacon, diced tomatoes, Parmesan and garlic croutons, drizzled with house Caesar dressing.

to work 18-19 hours a day, it might as well be for myself, and I began searching for business opportunities.” The opportunity that intrigued him the most came from a fellow pilot, Kevin Clark. SHARED PASSIONS “I met Kevin about three years ago,” Anoshiravani remembered, “and we had so many interests in common – we were both passionate about flying, business, and food.” Their friendship quickly became a business partnership as Anoshiravani teamed up with Clark on a project Clark already had in the works – the Flight Line Café in Rogers, Arkansas. Rogers Airport is Wal-Mart’s home base, and that means a lot of corporate airplane traffic. Determined to meet the needs of the local clientele, Flight Line Café focused more on the catering side, which meant box lunches and meals for pilots, flight crews, and passengers. “It was just such a really cool idea,” Anoshiravani, a Lakeland resident, explained, “that I wanted to bring it to Polk County.” A NATURAL CHOICE Gilbert Field in Winter Haven seemed to be an obvious choice for location: The airport’s terminal, which opened in 2008, still appears so new it sparkles, and the restaurant area is top notch, with US Hwy 92 frontage. Anoshiravani’s team added to the cool factor with the décor – sleek seating and lighting, with airplanethemed details that are stylish rather than kitschy. The restaurant’s live music on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday can turn a simple dinner into a perfect date night. And, oh yeah. Airplanes are taking off and taxiing, right outside the

window. More cool factor. THE FOOD My hubby and I decided to try the place a few weekends back, and I was immediately impressed with the menu: lots of American classics with a southern flair (Grilled Pimento BLT, for example, was one of the first things that caught my attention). I was really hungry, though, so a steak was calling my name. That meant the 12 ounce Ribeye ($18.95) was my choice, and it was delivered to my table exactly as I ordered – Medium. The poblano smashed sweet potatoes were incredible, and I know they will be landing on my plate again soon. Hubby decided to try the Penne Jambalaya ($14.25), a twist on the New Orleans classic, and was not disappointed. It featured gulf shrimp, chicken and andouille, smothered in a smoked poblano asiago cream sauce. Just last weekend, we decided to go back, this time for breakfast. This time, it was my husband who was really hungry, so he chose the Three Egg Omelet ($9.95), and I swear it looked more like four eggs – but that was probably because of all the items he asked to be included. I asked for the more dainty Two Egg Breakfast ($6.95) – but it really wasn’t dainty at all when you add the sides – grits or potatoes (he did the grits; I did the potatoes. Both were to die for.) and bacon, sausage, or ham. I still took bites of his omelet. The Provolone Cheese he had chosen made it irresistible.

The“Jack Brown” Club with turkey, ham, bacon, American cheese, fresh lettuce, locally grown tomatoes served on toasted bread.

Adam Hoar, who had worked with Taylor for more than a dozen years. “Adam and I work very closely to make sure our food is top notch,” he continued, explaining that sometimes, especially when creating a new dish, samples will be given out in the restaurant, just to get feedback. Robin Dekle, who used to work at Gary’s Oyster Bar and Harborside, joins Hoar as a second chef in the kitchen. Just recently, Anoshiravani obtained the full liquor license for the restaurant, and therefore brought on Brandy Derico, who has worked at Gary’s Oyster Bar and Tanners; and Brandon Hall, who has also worked at Gary’s Oyster Bar, to manage the bar. Chanel Collins, who has worked at Manny’s and Joe’s Crab Shack, rounds out the management team, as Front of House Manager. THE FUTURE “We are improving and expanding

our menu very soon,” said Anoshiravani. And, during one of those tableside chats with the friendly owner, he pulled up a picture of his newest burger – The Tower Burger. “You’d better be hungry when you order this,” he said with a laugh. Even more exciting for me, though, is the news that he plans to add an oyster bar sometime this fall. DON’T FORGET Although the emphasis is not on catering as was the case with the first Flight Line Café, Anoshiravani doesn’t want anyone to forget that it’s still available. “We close at 2:30 Monday-Wednesday, and during those afternoons, private groups can rent out the facility.” FMI: Flight Line Cafe & Catering, (863) 875-5869; 2073 U.S. Highway 92, Winter Haven.

THE TEAM “We hired Chef Vince Taylor to get us started,” Anoshiravani explained. Taylor, who had worked at Lake Ashton and Chalet Suzanne, helped develop the menu, and has since turned over the reins of the kitchen to

ONOMATOPOEIA on·o·mato·poe·ia: The naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (as buzz, hiss).

By Erica Smith

Bag It “I am pessimistic about the human race because it is too ingenious for its own good. Our approach to nature is to beat it into submission. We would stand a better chance of survival if we accommodated ourselves to this planet and viewed it appreciatively, instead of skeptically and dictatorially.” — E.B. White “Here is your country. Cherish these natural wonders, cherish the natural resources, cherish the history and romance as a sacred heritage, for your children and your children’s children. Do not let selfish men or greedy interests skin your country of its beauty, its riches or its romance.” — Theodore Roosevelt After a month of dealing with the effects from Hurricane Irma, we are all ready for a timeout or in the very least, a really, long nap. Given the uptick in activity around the world, my husband is convinced the Earth is in full retaliation mode. In fact, his exact statement was “Mother Nature is vomiting natural disasters.” Regardless of your stance on climate change, it appears, we are in the middle of one big environmental grudge match. I will never claim to be a serious environmentalist but my biggest pet peeve is the amount of plastic bags we receive each day. You do not have to be a scientist or expert to see the mountain of waste accumulating by our dependence on plastic. Plastic bags are not biodegradable, but “photodegradable” which means this material never breaks down but eventually becomes long-lasting “plastic dust”. As the bag degrades,

toxins leach into our soil and water. Unfortunately, producing recycled materials is a “catch 22” as these materials use copious amounts of energy. Approximately 12 million barrels of oil make the plastic bags that Americans consume annually. Plastic production worldwide uses around 8% of the world’s oil production. Worldwide, between 500 billion and one trillion plastic bags are being used each year. 50 million discarded garbage bags have formed a patch in the Pacific Ocean that is twice the size of the continental United States and experts estimate it is roughly 80 percent plastic. Trying to avoid plastic bags at the grocery store is nearly impossible. No matter how many reusable bags I place on the conveyor belt, there will be one plastic bag added to my cart during checkout. A poor bagger once stared in horror as I stuffed an entire spiral cut ham into my purse to avoid using a plastic bag. By refusing the extra bag at check-out, we could reduce the 500 billion plastic bags used worldwide each year and make positive changes to our environment. I am not advocating we all give up our modern conveniences; just make the decision to reduce our consumption of plastic bags at checkout. Being good to the Earth is good for us all and making one small change could lead to so many positive outcomes… one bag at a time. QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS info@todayandtonight.com OCTOBER 2017

BRAINEXCERCISE Sudoku Puzzle STRANGE BUT TRUE BY SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was Irish author and editor Robert Lynd who made the following sage observation: “History may be read as the story of the magnificent rearguard action fought during several thousand years by dogma against curiosity.” • Historians say that the Halloween tradition of trick-or-treating dates back to the early European tradition of mumming, when costumed dancers would go door to door to perform choreographed routines, as well as songs and plays, in exchange for treats. • You might be surprised to learn that on a per-capita basis, Finland has more heavy-metal bands than any other country on Earth. • If you’re fortunate enough to be planning a trip to Argentina, you’ll almost certainly make a stop in Buenos Aires, the capital. While you’re there, keep an eye out for a mobile work by Raul Lemesoff. The artist, known for his eccentricity, converted a 1979 Ford Falcon into a kind of a tank -- it even has a turret that swivels. Instead of soldiers and armaments, however, this tank carries books on shelves both inside and outside the vehicle. Lemesoff drives his “Weapon of Mass Instruction” through the city streets, delivering free books to all comers. His only requirement? Recipients must promise to read what he gives them. • You’ve certainly heard of “Tarzan of the Apes.” Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 1912 work has been adapted over and over again -- for radio, television, film and more. You probably weren’t aware, though, that the novel was such an instant and ongoing success that Burroughs wrote 24 sequels.
